It is hard to believe that this is my eleventh year at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute. When one has been a teacher, a program head, a vice principal, and a principal, all in the same school, one earns the right to call this school home. C.W.J. is therefore a home away from home for me. As a matter of fact, ever since I arrived in here in September 2000, Jefferys has always felt like home. It is at Jefferys where I realized that educational leadership offers broader and deeper ways to support student learning. It is at Jefferys where I worked with some of the most fantastic students in the system. Also, it is within the Jefferys’ professional learning community where I have shared some great moments with staff and school leaders. C.W. Jefferys has been good to me and for that reason, in my role as principal, I plan to make a difference. I would like to thank our teachers and staff who continue to motivate and engage our students. This is evident in that an overwhelming majority of our grade 12 students graduate and continue on to post- secondary institutions. We have excellent enrichment programs: ESTe 2 m and LAWS. We also have a wide variety of co-curricular activities at Jefferys. Additionally, our staff offer tutorial sessions for students in the mornings, over the lunch period and after school. Furthermore, we have an excellent leadership program which uses the technique of student-teaching- student to help our grade nines while transitioning into high school. It is hard to believe that this is my eleventh year at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute. When one has

been a teacher, a program head, a vice principal, and a principal, all in the same school, one earns the right to

call this school home. C.W.J. is therefore a home away from home for me. As a matter of fact, ever since I

arrived in here in September 2000, Jefferys has always felt like home. It is at Jefferys where I realized that

educational leadership offers broader and deeper ways to support student learning. It is at Jefferys where I

worked with some of the most fantastic students in the system. Also, it is within the Jefferys’ professional

learning community where I have shared some great moments with staff and school leaders. C.W. Jefferys

has been good to me and for that reason, in my role as principal, I plan to make a difference.

I would like to thank our teachers and staff who continue to motivate and engage our students. This

is evident in that an overwhelming majority of our grade 12 students graduate and continue on to post-

secondary institutions. We have excellent enrichment programs: ESTe2m and LAWS. We also have a wide

variety of co-curricular activities at Jefferys. Additionally, our staff offer tutorial sessions for students in the

mornings, over the lunch period and after school. Furthermore, we have an excellent leadership program

which uses the technique of student-teaching-student to help our grade nines while transitioning into high

school. A major requirement of the grade nine transition and leadership programs is that all grade nine

students attend a camp where they are engaged in leadership activities led by student mentors in the

leadership program. A testament to the quality of this program is the amazing positive feedback we get from

our grade nine students who attend.

I reserve a very special thank you for our families, our community and of course our wonderful

students. We thank parents and the community for sending us their best children and for supporting our

efforts to guide the learning of their children. Students, it is for you that we are here, thank you for doing

your best, and for striving to achieve success.

2012 Pine Crest Leadership Camp

All C.W. Jefferys grade nine students had the opportunity to experience leadership training at its best at CAMP PINE CREST from September 24th to September 26th.

The Leadership Camp is the kick off for the C.W. Jefferys Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) Program. This program invites all students to join, and participate in a variety of ice breaking activities, group dynamics, initiative tasks and co-operative games. Some of the L.I.T.’s will be selected to participate in the Pine Crest Training Camp this spring; to prepare themselves to help organize and run the camp for next year’s grade nine students.

The Leadership Camp is an integral part of the C.W. Jefferys transition plan for incoming grade nine students. One of the goals is to create positive and meaningful relationships between the grade nine students and C.W. Jefferys staff and senior student mentors. Although the program at Pine Crest was only 3 days long, all the students loved the experience and developed trust and positive relationships with many of the staff who will teach them over the next few years.

The Pine Crest experience is second to none. Pine Crest is a traditional summer camp with many strong traditions rooted in its history. The camp is situated on hundreds of acres of beautiful hardwood forest on the shores of Clear Lake. The serenity and natural beauty that is all around has an impact on everyone who visits.

However, the focus of the experience is on leadership and character development through adventure-based learning activities and communal living, in a semi-remote semi-wilderness setting. Students who attended Pine Crest learned how to canoe and spent a few hours practicing their paddling skills on Clear Lake. They participated in hikes learning about the world around them. Students also participated in a nature art program and a survival program. The most challenging and impactful activities included group dynamics games, trust activities, low ropes, a static high ropes course and a ‘vertical playground’ challenge course. During all these activities students stepped out of their comfort zones while being supported by one another and setting their own challenges.

Students and staff enjoyed campfire activities, an open swim and just hanging out laughing, chatting and watching sunsets with each other during their free time.

Ms. Jennifer Haugh and Ms. Daniela Bruzzese are CW. Jeffery's, Child and Youth Counsellors. We provide social and emotional support to all students, and are available to answer parents' questions at anytime.

Look for our monthly character initiative where we award individual students for exemplifying a particular character attribute. Attributes for following months are: November KINDNESS, December GENEROSITY, January PERSEVERANCE and February RESPECT.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto launched their Pumped for Post-Secondary Program with C.W. Jefferys this past week at the University of Toronto and George Brown College. We had an excellent turn out of both mentors and mentees for our opening receptions and they were a great success. Mentors and mentees got to know each other through icebreakers and a catered meal provided by our post-secondary institutions. Next week, we start our campus tours, and our mentors are very excited to show our students what post-secondary campuses have to offer.

Our second Big Brothers Big Sisters program, the Youth in School Mentoring program, is running again this year. CWJ youth mentors, once a week, will be at Yorkwoods and Derrydown P.S., during lunch time to facilitate and mentor groups of young students. This program gives youth the unique opportunity to become a role model for a child while gaining their 40 community service hours required for graduation. We thank Ms. Haugh and Ms. Bruzzese for all their help in launching the programs and getting students involved.

S.A.C. President’s Message!

Hello, Parents/Guardians/Students/Staff/Readers!

Can you believe that we are already about 25% through the year and halfway through the semester? It is honestly amazing how quickly this year is flying by. Well, I can tell you personally, that the student council is coming hard this year. In the month of September, Student Council brought Club Crawl to life for the second year in a row. In the month of October, we kicked off an event-packed Spirit Week. Aside from those larger events, we have also begun a student-run initiative to change the ambience of the cafeteria from abysmal to vivacious through the power of music.

On November 15th, we will be hosting a semi-formal in which the students will have the chance to take a break from classes and dress up for an enchanted night of entertainment, food, and dancing. In December, to celebrate the winter break and a successful 2012, the student council will be holding the annual talent show! A T-shirt is also in the works for students to purchase for a minimal fee. If anyone has any logo designs they would like to submit, please feel free to do so to any of the student council representatives or staff (Ms. Nurse & Mr. Tulk).

It would be amazing if we could get everyone to participate in the school in a positive way. The student council is here for the students. If you have any suggestions about what you would like to see, please feel free to speak to a student council rep or a staff advisor. Positive feedback and constructive criticism are always appreciated. Student council members do not bite and your president does not bite either! Try to make the best of your high school years, they only last so long.

If there are any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me [email protected].

On October 4th, 45 CWJ Business Studies students went to Seneca College – Newnham campus to participate in “A day in the Life…of a Business Student.” Students participated in a campus tour, college lectures, and learned about the diploma and degree programs offered at Seneca. We thank Ms. Steele for accompanying the students.

On November 2nd, CWJ Co-op and Business Studies students attended the 3rd Annual Black Business Professional Convention. The students participated in lectures and workshops. This was our third year participating in the event. We thank Ms. Verma for accompanying the students.

To sum up this entire week would take too many words, and there isn’t enough space, but if I were to choose one word, it would have to be amazing. The amount of school spirit that was shown was outstanding and it makes most of the students want to actually come to school. There were so many events that brought all of us students together, and there were so many students that showed up dressed accordingly to each day, and there were many activities held at the cafeteria. It was fun to see even the teachers taking part. The school was filled with laughter and joy and it was somewhere where people would want to be. This school is really one of the best because the students really are full of spirit and are simply amazing.

Sports News! This year the senior and junior boys’ volleyball seasons were like a rollercoaster – there were

plenty of ups and downs for both teams.

The junior boys, coached by Mr. Gallo, Ms. Samuel and Mr. Mach, did not have a great regular season. However, they made the playoffs and played York Mills in the quarter-finals. They fought hard, but in the end they were eliminated 2 games to 1. Even though they were eliminated, the coaches felt that the season was a success because all of the players had developed and improved their skills greatly. Look out for these Saints next year!

The senior boys tied for third in their division and finished with a record of 2-2. Many players were injured this year or were unable to take part, but the team was determined to do what they could to make the playoffs. They worked hard and in the end it paid off. They move on to face UTS at the Senior Boys’ A/AA City Finals and qualify for OFSAA. Good Luck Boys!

University of Toronto’s S.M.P. 2012

The Summer Mentorship Program was provided by the University of Toronto’s Health Sciences Department for students ranging from grades 11 – 12. I was recommended by Ms. Aziz to enter this wonderful program for all of July. It provided students an insight of different healthcare careers available in Canada. Also, students have a chance to experience and expose themselves to a university life and what it feels like to be a university student. Being a part of this program has brought a lot of benefits to me as an individual. This includes being matched with an exceptional mentor, meeting different individuals from different healthcare fields, participating in hands-on activities in different settings, job shadowing a healthcare professional of my choice, interacting with high school students from different parts of Toronto, and learning what University of Toronto has to offer. To be honest, this program has helped to give me an idea of what kind of career I want to pursue in the future. Also, since I gained a lot of connections from a wide variety of healthcare professionals, I can receive some help going towards my dream. All in all, this was an amazing experience. I had the chance to learn so much in such little time, meet different people from different health care fields, gain connections with different individuals, receive a G.L.C. credit, and most importantly, become exposed to the different health care fields Canada has to offer. I am truly happy that I had the chance to participate in the program. Thank you Ms. Aziz!
