PRINCIPAL’S NEWS As Term 1 draws to a close I would like to thank staff and students for the positive way they have begun the 2017 school year. It has been a short term only 9 weeks but a very busy one. We began the year with Smart Start where we established our ‘norms’ around how we were going to treat each other and the behaviour expectations of our students. We also had open night for parents to meet the teacher and for students to share their new learning space. We had the very successful Focus on One breakfast that gave our Year 6 students the opportunity to introduce their mentor to their parents. We ended the term with Harmony Day celebrations and the year 5 and 6 swimming program. School Council AGM On Monday night, we had the AGM for our new School Council. I would like to welcome the new members to the 2017 School Council: Sandra Purdue and Sheryl Maddren. I look forward to working with you this year. I would like to thank and congratulate the following Office Bearers for our 2017 School Council: President - Andrew Black, Vice President – Samara Kelly, Secretary – Marie Therese Milani, Finance Committee- Debra Chandler, Chris Callipari, Andrew Black and Sheryl Maddren. Fun Run The fun run was a great a great success yesterday. It was great to see our students in their house colors running very hard and doing their best to raise money for our school. Thank you to the Parents Club who gave the students a very welcomed Cruncha at the end of their run and thank you also to Mr Kennedy for running the event on the day. Good Friday Students have been filling the jars in their classrooms with coins to raise money for the Good Friday Appeal. I believe we are one of only a few schools who continue to donate to this Appeal every year. I love that our children want to help other children who may be very sick. There has been a lot of pocket money go into the jars which is lovely. The winning grade will be announced tomorrow and thank you to everyone who has donated to this very worthy cause. Term 2 Tomorrow school will finish at 2:30pm; school bus pick up will run from that time. Term 2 begins on Wednesday April 19 th as we have a Curriculum Day for staff professional learning on Tuesday April 18 th . I will look forward to seeing all of our children back safe, well and ready to start work. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Moving beyond asking, “What did you do at school?”

By Michael Grose Ever found yourself asking your child the same bland question about school? “So, how was your day? What did you do at school today? What did you learn?” If these are your default questions the chances are that you’ll get a one or two word reply along the lines, “Fine!” “Good!” “Okay” “Nothing much.” These answers don’t really tell you a lot. On the other hand, these types of questions don’t ask a great deal. So how can you move beyond the mundane when you talk with children about their school days? The questions you ask to prompt a conversation will often say a great deal about you and what you value. If you focus only on academic or learning questions, then it indicates that’s what you value. It helps to take conversations and your questions in different directions to get a multi-faceted window into your child’s school life but also an indication of your child’s interests, social skills and welfare. Here are some examples of question starters that may prompt different responses from children about their time at school:

1. Tell me what made you laugh today?

2. Who did you play with at recess today?

3. Did you do anything that was brave?

4. If I spoke to your teacher, what would he/she tell me about you?

5. What did your teacher talk about today?

6. Where’s the best place to hang out/play at

school?

7. Tell me one good thing that happened to you

today?

8. Who were you nice/kind/friendly to today?

9. What did you do that you were proud of/happy with today?

10. What’s something you learned with a friend

today?

11. If today was musical instrument what would it be? Why?

15. If you were a teacher tomorrow, what would

you teach the class? Mrs Marie-Therese Milani
