We know children get tired and sick at this time of the year and this means missing school. If your child is unwell and needs to stay home, please call the school to let us know. We can make sure our kids are healthy and well rested, then if they become unwell, they recover quicker. This may also help to ward off some illnesses. We know that keeping children active and energised also keeps them well. At school during the winter we endeavor to have children outside and active, even if it is cold. Please make sure you send warm clothes to school so they can go out and about. Consider sending slippers so that they can change out of wet shoes inside the classroom. Assessments Teachers are currently assessing and writing student reports. We encourage parents to communicate with your classroom teacher on your child’s progress and development. This can be done in person or over the phone. In this way, you have a comprehensive understanding of how your child is learning and the areas of strength and need. So that teachers can be prepared, by having work to show or assessment information to share with you, it is encouraged that you make a time to catch up. Teachers may also call or talk with you about making a time, if they want to discuss your child’s progress. When schools and parents work in partnership children’s learning and engagement to learning increases. Reports provide an overall picture of your child’s achievements and future areas for development. Reports will be distributed home during the last week of term. Our staff has been doing a lot of work over the last couple of weeks in thinking about how best to communicate this information with you in reports. Leadership Camp Our Grade 6 leaders are off to 15 Mile Creek camp for the week to participate in leadership building activities. What a wonderful opportunity this is. Have fun Jack, Elly, Samy and Adam.

PERANBIN PRIMARY COLLEGE NEWS

We have also been doing a lot of work about how best we can use the assessments we undertake.

CROSS COUNTRY

On Friday we have Isaac King and Ada Mckeachie representing the school in Yea, in the division cross-country. Good luck to them. Their participation and willingness to keep striving displays our school values.

WINTER

With winter now here, so too is cold and flu season.

Assessments

Teachers are currently assessing and writing student reports.

LeadershipCamp

Our Grade 6 leaders are off to 15 Mile Creek camp for the week to participate in leadership building activities. What a wonderful opportunity this is. Have fun Jack, Elly, Samy and Adam.

Lion’s Club Benalla run a junior public speaking competition each year. Baddaginnie/Swanpool students have participated for the last two years. This year all of our students in year 3-6 will participate. Forms will go home next week about the competition.

The first round of the competition involves students travelling to Violet Town to deliver their speeches. Speakers in years 3-4 and 5-6 will then be chosen to represent the school in Benalla.

You can find Eron this week- Monday- Strathbogie Tuesday- Violet Town Wednesday- Violet Town Thursday- Sports at Baddaginnie Friday- Strathbogie Please email me if you need anything. I check emails very regularly. [email protected]

MUSIC STUDENTS

Students who are lucky enough to have lessons with Ethne Green or our wonderful volunteer John Dunn, it is so important that practice is built into each day- just 10 minutes is enough to make a huge difference to the level of playing. Also please remember to bring your music to your lessons.

What a frosty cold week it has been up on the hill! In kitchen garden this week we used a new ingredient- polenta, to make a cheesy vegetable casserole and using up beautiful in season apples to make coleslaw. In the garden, we found a great botanical artist in Nate Margrie.

Ms. Hanby’s Room In the Junior Room we have been focusing on connectives and upleveling our writing through extending sentences and using WOW Words. This week, our writing focus has been persuasive texts and the students have been examining where we may find examples of persuasive texts in the world around us. In Maths, we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes, and identifying examples in the environment around them. The Year 3's have also been exploring the nets of 3D shapes, including a dodecahedron! A shape with 12 faces! In Art, the students have been learning how to fold paper to make a lovely 3D wind spiral and flower! The students are really looking forward to Winter Sports next week, and have been practicing their skills in preparation.

Ms. Chapman/Ms. Weeks’ Room We have had another great week in our classroom. We have looked at spelling pattern /ie/ making the sound ’E’ of course except after ‘C’. We have worked on using our planning time really effectively to write well and we have been following pathways for skip counting to improve our fluency. In Art we investigated positive and negative space. Acting with empathy, we have written poems about what it might be like to be blind.

Mr. Clelland’s Room In class this week we continued our work on up-leveling sentences as part of our VCOP program. We have used a range of adjectives, adverbs and punctuation to make WOW sentences. As part of Reconciliation Week we researched the impact of the 1967 Referendum and the Mabo case on Australian History. In Mathematics the children explored angles using their protractors and addition and subtraction strategies. Our inquiry unit continued with our work on communities and the people within them.

Ms. Fitz’s Room Also well done to achieving your golden words – Libby, and green words - Wesley. In Integrated Studies this week we have been learning about foods that have come from other countries. The children have been asked to ask their parents what type of foods they ate when they were young?! On Monday at Baddaginnie campus we are goingto cook, and eat a food that has come to Australia fromanother country!

Over the last few weeks, we have been lucky enough to have several parents helping with reading in both classes. A big thanks to Mychelle, Lou and Sarah for their support.

Ms. Barratt’s Room In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes, by building shapes from nets, and toothpicks and lollies. In Reading, we have been learning to Compare and Contrast, using Venn diagrams to organize information. On Saturday night, Dylan was part of a group of children selected to play football at Etihad Stadium in the half time break of the AFL game. The Half Time Game By Dylan Erskine On Saturday the 27th of May I went to Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. I left at 9.30 am. My coach was Andrew. I got a jumper. We had to meet at 12.30am at the stadium. We got photos with the mascots. We went to the Bulldogs vs St Kilda game. I played for the Bulldogs. We got changed in the clubrooms. The scores were Bulldogs 47 to St Kilda 17. I kicked a point. I made 2 new friends, Jim and Bill. They were twins from Stanhope. I had a wonderful time with my family and Pop cheering me on. I was very lucky. Mrs. B’s Room We had a very successful ‘Big Write’ session this week, with students coming up with really good ideas for the topic ‘A New Place Just for Kids.’ Everyone concentrated on their writing, or drawings with dictated sentences, and enjoyed the music and candles that helped them to concentrate.
