Also leaving us this term will be our Acting Deputy Principal, Mr Stuart Ruthven. Mr Ruthven will return to his previous school. Replacing him will be Mrs Petra Cooke. Mrs Cooke is currently the Head of Curriculum in one of our regional schools and a Principal Education Advisor Australian Curriculum, for the Metropolitan Region. Mrs Cooke will be a valuable asset to our school. This particular Deputy Principal Position has had a number of people in and out of it all year. Very soon we will be able to advertise it for permanency and have stability within the Leadership Team. Roof replacement During the holidays the school office will be closed, however work will commence to replace the roof of the Administration building during this time. Weather depending, the work should be finished by the time students return. At the same time the parking area across the street from the school, on Burrendah Rd, will dug up by Urban Utilities to replace pipes. The work is scheduled to be completed by the time school commences next term. If it is held up due to the weather parents are asked to find alternative parking. The Green Zone will not be affected. Trespass on school grounds Unfortunately we have had too many security call-outs recently to ignore the constant trespass of youth on the school grounds out of hours. Their activities on the roofs, climbing tennis court fences, sitting on top of basketball hoops, and skateboarding over our fixed outdoor furniture have meant we will now be locking all our gates as a deterrent. While this will not guarantee they will stay away, it will act as a barrier to their entrance. Locking the gates is something we should already be doing. From the holidays onwards, all gates will be locked at 5.30pm on school days, and will remain locked on holidays and weekends. During the week, gates used by before/after school care parents will remain open until after school care staff leave. On the holidays the same staff will lock and unlock the same gates during vacation care hours. Have a wonderful September holiday. We look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday, 6th October for a very busy 4th Term. Please also note on your calendars the Term 4 Pupil Free Day on Monday, October 19. Tournament of MindsThis is sadly our last Tournament of Mindsupdate for the year. We spent Sunday atGriffith University for the State Competition. We took the Language Literature Teamwhich consisted of Louis H, Jessica B, Jade W, Georgia A, AprilP, Caitlin B and Bethany M.

This was an incredibly strong and competitive team. Judith andI have both mentioned how much this group has grown as ateam over the journey. Unfortunately the team did not place firstor second and won't be progressing to the next round.

We received the teams feedback and it was very positive. Theydid extremely well on their long term challenge and receivedmajority of their marks in the top column. We had parentsand teachers from other schools approach us after theirperformance and comment on how creative and funny theywere. They unfortunately did not score so high in theirspontaneous challenge and thus will not be going on to the nextstage.

Their room supervisor for their three hour long term challengeraved about them and spoke about their manners, humour andtheir ability to turn anything into a dance party. She said thatthey were an absolute credit to our school. We humbly agreed!

We are so proud.

National Science Week in 5HF

Did you know it was National Science Week 15-23 August? Thetheme for schools in 2015 was ‘Making waves – The scienceof light’, based on the International Year of Light. This themefitted in perfectly with the science unit of work that 5HF hadbeen working on, Now you see it - Light and light energy, so itseemed the perfect opportunity to join in with the Science Weekcelebrations.

To celebrate, 5HF held a Science Fair on Monday 17 Augoutside the library during second break. We invited Prep andYear One students to attend to explore the science of light. The5HF students collaborated online for homework in preparationfor the event and on the day, presented experiments withrainbows and refraction of light, disco balls and reflection oflight, and even potatoes and lemon circuits to generate energyto light up light bulbs.

There was also information about opticalillusions, colour and light, how to bend lightand use peek boxes, and even pinholecameras that the younger students were toexplore. 5HF were close by to ask Prepsand Ones to make predictions and observewhat happened to see if their predictions were correct.

Earlier that morning, 5HF received a visitfrom their Scientist in Schools Partner, DrPeter Stone. CSIRO were so excited aboutthe visit that they decided to send along acouple of other guests to join us on the day,Jen Hoyle from CSIRO and Kirby Andersonfrom General Electric. (He was most excitedto attend claiming that GE had invented the light bulb!)

After meeting the scientists and hearing all about their workdangerously firing potatoes at speeds of up to 80km per hour, all in the name of science, the three experts were able to see asneak preview of our science fair. They were mightily impressedwith the efforts of 5HF and said they couldn't wait to visitJindalee State School again.

A big thank you from 5HF to Mr Hacker, for arranging the areaoutside the library in preparation, and to Mrs Ahnon for helpingto set up and continuing the light and light energy expo insidethe library.

“Books light up our world” Book Week Theme2015

“Let us read, let us dance…” Voltaire.

This is exactly what we did during Book Week. We all dancedthe “Sid Shuffle” on assembly. We read poems and enjoyed theshortlisted books.

But wait, there’s still more Book Week celebrations.

On Monday 7 September, Year 2s danced again, listened, andlaughed when an in-school musical “Shine a Light,” visited theschool.

Following that, on Wednesday 9 September, Years 5 and 6travelled to the StoryArts Festival in Ipswich, a free biennialevent organised by the Ipswich District Teacher-LibrariansNetwork. On the day, the children listened, they watched, theycreated, they drew, and they laughed.

As William in Year 5 said during one of the sessions, “What willhappen if I can’t stop laughing forever?” Sounds like a goodidea for a book, William.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the activities and, according to theteachers, some children were inspired to write, draw, createand read more.

Parents, please come up and visit the library. We have afireplace to read by and a 2-storey treehouse you can sit in toread. Some classes have displayed work in the library.

“Let us read and let us dance…”

Getting to Know … Getting to knowSelina Bird, Year 6 Teacher

I grew up in Camira, half way betweenBrisbane and Ipswich. When I wasyoung it was mainly bush with only a fewhouses. We spent every afternoon andweekend playing and running outside, building cubby houses out of bushesand trees and just having lots of fun. Iremember laughing, constantly.

My favourite childhood memory is myDad coming home after a hard day’s work as a tradesman, his boots covered in dirt, opening the door, picking me upand saying “Who loves you Birdy? I missed you today”. Idon’t ever remember my Dad saying “I’m too busy”, “In aminute”, “I can’t make it to your race”. I’m forever grateful forthat. It reminds me to be in the moment and ‘present’ with myown children and the students I teach.

Before I came to Jindalee State School I taught at BrassallState School for 6 months. Prior to that I worked for 10 yearsin the corporate world as a Public Relations and MarketingManager for national and global organisations. I got to travela lot throughout the world and had a ‘no limits’ expenseaccount which was fun. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t trade myteaching life for anything. It really is the best job in the worldand I’m so lucky to be able to do it at Jindalee State School.

My friends and family would describe me as enthusiastic, sporty, bubbly, caring, organised, a neat-freak, hard-working,fun, forthright, a perfectionist, goal-driven and loving.

Someone who inspires me - My parents are my biggestinspiration. They migrated from England in 1969, leavingeveryone they knew and everything they had to start a new, better life in Australia. I was born here. My Mum and Dad arethe hardest working people I know. When I left my corporatejob to become a teacher, part of me thought they’d be a littledisappointed that I’d left what appeared to be an impressivecareer. To the contrary, they were really supportive and said“You only live once, so do work that makes you truly happy”.They taught me to stand up for myself, for others and forwhat is right. I try my best to do that.

On the weekends, I love to spend time with my husband,Shameem, and two daughters (Alira aged 6 and Zara whois 8). I really enjoy going to the gym and watching our girlsparticipate in a variety of sports. It’s also great to catch upwith my dearest friends.

People don’t know it, but I’m good at cheering andencouraging others. Actually, that’s a total lie. EVERYONEknows how enthusiastic and excited I get during schoolsporting events.

I am most proud of seeing the students I teach achievesomething they found difficult or never thought possible whenthey’ve worked really hard. Years later, when I see studentsor their parents and they tell me I made a positive differencein their life, I feel very proud that I’m doing something good inthe world.

If I had a motto it would be “Be fit, be fierce, be fabulous!”.

The people who make me laugh are the students I teach.Every day I’m in a classroom there is something that makesme laugh. Some days it’s a giggle and others I’m almostwetting my pants in hysterics.

If I could change anything about the world it would befor all children to have the opportunity to be brought up in aloving, safe environment and have access to quality food andeducation.
