On Wednesday, 11 July 2012, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands signed the treaty that would see 11km of seawall closed around 2,000 hectares of new, man-made land.

This enormous £2 billion infrastructure project, which has employed a total of 20,000 people, is now running ahead of time and remains within scope and on budget – and was made possible thanks to PRINCE2.

Following new gas discoveries in the North Sea, GDF SUEZ recognized the need for a reliable infrastructure to support its growth plans. They established a standard partnership project management framework (PPMF) which enabled them to increase the number of formal projects across the business to support large changes.The PPMF incorporated elements from ITIL®, PRINCE2®, MSP®, MoP®, M_o_R® and P3O® providing a seamless approach from strategy through delivery to yield and track the expected benefits.

Q. Isn’t PRINCE2 an outdated project management methodology used only by UK Government?

A. No. PRINCE was originally created by the UK Government to run successful IT projects, but when redeveloped in 1996 as a generic project management method it was renamed PRINCE2. The likes of the United Nations and NATO have adopted PRINCE2, as well as increasing numbers of private sector companies, including Vodafone, Rolls-Royce and Visa.

Q. I have PRINCE2 Foundation so do I need Practitioner?A. The PRINCE2 Foundation certification will prove that you understand

PRINCE2, however certification in PRINCE2 Practitioner will give employers the evidence that you can apply your understanding of PRINCE2 in a project environment.

Q. Our organization uses PMI’s PMBoK guide so we don’t need PRINCE2, do we?

A. Getting qualified in PRINCE2 will complement your understanding of the PMBOK by giving you clarity on project controls and processes to help you deliver projects more effectively.

Q. Isn’t PRINCE2 only applicable for larger organizations and large projects?

A. Not at all. PRINCE2 has been developed by project managers to be applied to any project, of any size and scope. The tailoring aspect of PRINCE2 means it can be used for the very small projects that last for days, or major projects that last for months with huge budgets.

Q. PRINCE2 is a rigid waterfall approach to Project Management, isn’t it?

A. Far from it. PRINCE2 should be tailored to meet the requirements of the organization and type of project.
