The Royal Navy, the Air Force and the Army will meet in Méribel for their traditional International Ski and Snowboard Championships. For the 8th consecutive year the British Armed Forces will compete in a multitude of events here: downhill, super g, slalom and giant slalom for skiers; slope style and snowboard cross for snowboarders; classic sprint, parallel slalom and giant slalom for telemarkers.

2nd January 2014final of the iCe hoCkey league Cup

The Magnus League will once again organize the final of the Cup in Méribel. This important event will oppose the two best ice hockey teams in France. For the last match of the season, the two finalists will compete for the coveted national title on the Olympic ice rink. This year, the French Alpine Ski Championships will be held in Méribel. A great opportunity for the resort to host the top French skiers on their return from the Olympic Games in Sotchi and hope-fully celebrate their Olympic success! Racing will take place on the Corbey stadium (downhill, slalom, super G and giant slalom). “A great event and a good rehearsal prior to the World Cup Finals scheduled here in 2015» according to Michel Vion, President of the French Ski Federation.

For the past 10 years Méribel has hosted the British Ski Championships.For a 15 day period, the resort becomes ‘oh so British’! The Union Jack flys above the stadium whilst more than 1,000 skiers compete in a selection of disciplines (downhill, slalom, super combined, super G and giant slalom). A fortnight of live entertain-ment day and night.

Cultural events in Méribel: “COeurs De Culture”Chic and sporty, Méribel cultivates a certain ‘savoir vivre’. The resort proposes an excellent cultural programme throughout the season, music and comedy. The auditorium in Méribel regularly plays host to some of France’s most popular comedians.

Act 2 – Music in Méribel Jazz music is a combination of western and black American culture, appreciated around the globe. Les Allues, Le Raffort, les Cruet, Vanthier, Chandon, Nantgerel and Plantin. These hamlets were the origins of the resort. They first inspired a Scotsman, Peter Lindsay in 1936, looking to develop a site for winter sports and recreation. Today, each of these charming villages is a small gem of traditio-nal alpine architecture. One systematically passes through them before reaching the more recent quarters of Méribel. These villages are valuable base camps for amateurs of authenti-city, calm, culture. Gentle walking and great skiing. The Olympe gondola provides access to the Chaudanne and the largest ski area in the world in just a few minutes. At the end of the day, ride the gondola back down to the village or ski straight back to the peace of your chalet.

Méribel Village is the most recent addition to the Méribel Valley. In the early 1990s, the site was scattered with sheepfolds. It has since become the setting for a lovely hamlet, designed in the purest Savoyard tradition, with its chalets and barn renovations, its chapel, its bread oven, shops and terraces. Built around its delightfully sunny square, Méribel Village is lin-ked to the Méribel ski area and the 3 Valleys via a chairlift, the “Télésiège du Golf”. Ski back to the village at the end of the day along the blue slope “Le Lapin”. In the evening, a free shuttle bus service takes partygoers to Méribel centre in just minutes.

The rising star of French Freestyle, Thomas Krief recently joined the Méribel team! At only 20 years of age, Thomas is extremely ambitious and already boasts numerous achievements: Bronze medalist at the World Championships in Oslo (Norway) in the half-pipe event and French Champion during the 2011-2012 season. He has rapidly progressed and now competes against some of the best freestylers in the world. After winning the silver medal last year at the World Championships in Whistler (Canada), Thomas was pushed into the limelight! He has been training in Méribel for years and is quite at home on one of the best snow-parks in Europe.

His objective for the 2014 Olympic GamesThe Olympic Games are a great challenge this winter for all our freestylers. Thomas will definitely be skiing for an Olympic title! A month prior to the games in Sotchi he has planned to train in Aspen, Colorado.

The Lau brothers currently dominate the field of telemark. This year Phil became triple winner of the Crystal Globe in the sprint event, after his titles in 2011 and 2012. Chris, the elder of the three, finished third in the World Cup in 2011 whilst Sven, the youngest, appears extremely promi-sing after recently winning a World Cup giant slalom race. Between them, they have revived this elegant, athletic and spectacular discipline to arouse vocations in Méribel and throughout the 3 Valleys.

The ski club in Méribel trains more than 150 local young skiers and provides young boys and girls with the opportunity to try all snow-sport disciplines. A number of them reach the summit, like Julie Pomagalski, winner of the World Cup crystal globe in snowboarding in 2004. She also participated in the Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 and Turin in 2006, at the same time as Marie Laissus.

Vice-World Giant Slalom Champion in Portillo, Chile, in 1966 he also compe-ted at the Winter Olympics in Grenoble in 1968. He was part of the famous team led by Honoré Bonnet. Injured, he was unable to compete in the Sapporo Olympics in 1972. One of our slopes, pre-viously used for downhill competitions still carries his name.

The finals of the Alpine World Cup is an important event for Méribel Vallée and for French ski resorts in general. Such an event has not taken place in France since 1982 when Montgenèvre organized the finals in collaboration with Sestrière in Italy.

Méribel is renowned for its experience in the organization of international events (Olympic Games in 1992 & Ladies Alpine World Cup in 2013), the quality of its ski slopes and its competitive spirit.

The World Cup finals in 2015 will attract visitors from around the world. On the festive programme: music, culture and street entertainment. This important venue in the international resort of Méribel Vallée, promises a unique atmosphere!
