TRIBUTES AND RETROSPECTIVES

Jean-Pierre and Luc DardenneIn the presence of Jean-Pierre et Luc Dardenne, Christine Plenus, Jean-Pierre Duret, Olivier Gourmet, Adèle Haenel, Déborah FrançoisIn partnership with Wallonie-Bruxelles International and the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles

Since the end of the 1970s, the Dardenne brothers have worked together to paint a portrait of a Belgian working class which is the victim of deep-seated changes. They have remained faithful to the region around Liège, in par-ticular Seraing which serves as a backdrop for almost all of their dramas. They started their career there with a se-ries of documentaries, which remain largely, unknown but which are essential in understanding the development of their cinema, and on the resistance and activist past of its inhabitants (Le Chant du rossignol, Leçons d’une université volante, …). After a spell in the theatre (Regarde Jonathan. Jean Louvet, son œuvre; Falsch), where they inherited the spirit of a repertory company, it was through fiction – and the fruit of some disillusionment (Je pense à vous) – that they created their own way of filming. Since La Promesse (The Promise), which also revealed the talent of Jérémie Régnier and Olivier Gourmet, there has always been the same consistency: uncluttered, hand-held camera, an imposing soundtrack, as yet unknown actors… This film heralds the major themes in the Dardennes’ work: generational conflict set against a background of grim industrial landscapes - Le Fils (The Son), L’Enfant (The Child) ¬– with characters excluded from the community and in search of humanity - Rosetta, Le Silence de Lorna (Lorna’s Silence). The latest direction taken by the directors who have won the most awards at the Cannes Film Festival, is the use of famous actresses to embody their characters: Cécile de France - Le Gamin au vélo (The Kid with a Bike), Marion Cotillard - Deux jours, une nuit (Two Days, One Night), Adèle Haenel - La Fille inconnue (The Unknown Girl).

L’Altro CinemaIn the presence of Jean-Baptiste Thoret

Italian cinema was unquestionably the greatest cinema of the 1960s… But behind the new great masters, others were working in genre film to create a popular repertory for the general public, while still resonating with the troubled history of Italy of the 60s and 70s. This is what we have called L’Altro Cinema. They invented and/or reinvented the forms of various genres, westerns, peplums, detective films, and finally the Giallo, producing and directing hundreds of films, and whose aesthetics continue to influence the world of cinema.

Facing AuthorityIn the presence of Costa Gavras, Pierre Schoeller and Olivier Gourmet

Cinema abounds with films showing individuals in relation to the powers that dominate them and often threa-ten them. From the battle against an all-powerful economic system in Ken Loach’s films, to the heady power explored by Pierre Schoeller in L’Exercice de L’État (The Minister), cinema has always focused on the individual alone against the world, reflecting our individualist societies where the law of the strongest rules.

Emmanuelle DevosIn her presenceIn partnership with Le Quai - Centre Dramatique National Angers Pays de la Loire

The icon of a generation of filmmakers, Emmanuelle Devos met Arnaud Desplechin and Noémie Lvovsky as part of an actors’ workshop at La fémis, after studying at the Cours Florent under Francis Huster. She has become a recurring figure for both directors. She received the César for Best Actress for her role in Jacques Audiard’s Sur mes lèvres (Read my Lips), which introduced her to large audiences. Since then she has gone on to work with very different directors, from Jérôme Bonnell to Alain Resnais, through Riad Sattouf and Sophie Fillières. She alternates work on screen and on stage, and will be at Le Quai for Yasmina Reza’s Bella Figura, and will present some of the most striking films from her vast filmography at Premiers Plans.

Bella Figura by Yasmina RezaThursday 19 and Friday 20 January - Le Quai

A playwright of genius, director on stage and screen, Yasmina Reza has written around 30 works which have been produced around the world. She is now doing Bella Figura, her latest play, alongside, among others, Emmanuelle Devos, Camille Japy and Micha Lescot…

“Little indication is given in the text of the essential pauses, silences, hesitations. What counts are all the off-beat moments”.This stage direction opens Yasmina Reza’s new play, Bella Figura, filled with off-beat moments punctuated with farcical tangles. There can be no concessions when writing and Yasmina Reza knows that. Since Art, 20 years ago, and its massive international success, she has gone from text to text, with an exact, sometimes biting, style, but always with disconcerting and testing precision. Now she will be working alongside exceptional actors: Emmanuelle Devos, Camille Japy, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Micha Lescot and Josiane Stoléru, and will herself be directing Bella Figura, originally created in 2015 at the Schaubühne in Berlin by German director Thomas Ostermeier.

Andrea ArnoldIn her presenceTen years after creating a sensation in Cannes with her first feature, Red Road, Andrea won her third Jury Prize with her intensely energetic film American Honey, which will have a première at the Festival. She first came to attention with her Oscar-winning short film Wasp, and soon became a new voice in British cinema. A practionner of realist and humanist cinema, expert in capturing people’s emotions and motivations, she shows passionate, troubled heroines in a constant state of rebellion, just like Mia, the teenager in Fish Tank.

Cristian MungiuIn his presenceCristian Mungiu won an award at the last Cannes Film Festival with his latest film Baccalauréat, after winning the Palme d’or for his extraordinary, tense 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days in 2007, and every one of his films is an event. Each of them is a confirmation of his daring directing style and extreme precision serving carefully honed scripts which cover such topics as the dictatorial regime of Ceausescu or extreme religious obscurantism. With his very first feature, Occident, a sharp comedy which paints a picture of a disillusioned, moneyless youth, this young director confirmed his position as one of the leaders of new Romanian cinema with its deeply universal scope.
