FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

The Epiphany of the Lord The Solemnity of the “Epiphany” celebrates God's intentions of opening up the minds and hearts of the chosen people

to the universal mission of God's Son on earth. Isaiah had foretold that "all the ends of the earth will behold the salva-

tion of our God." ( Is. 52:10b)

On Epiphany, the light from the skies was intensified a thousand-fold and the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled, that

"nations shall walk by your light and kings by your shining radiance." ( Is. 60:1-3)

To the wonder of all in Palestine, there came foreign camels bearing foreign scholars. Ever since King Cyrus of Persia

had been God's instrument in freeing Israel from slavery (Babylonian exile ended in 538 BC), there had been warm re-

lations between the Jewish people and Persia. Many believe that Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar were really Persian

astrologers.

What courage and perseverance those strangers had shown, to brave the dangers of travel and political intrigue! But,

they found what they were looking for: the child who possessed all meaning. They fell to their knees in homage, for

their learning made them humble, and their wisdom led them to recognize the Divine in the fragile flesh of a child.

Their role in history had been accomplished - to teach us all to follow the guidance of the Almighty, to accept our own

roles as Bearers of the Light, and to follow this Christ into His Mission, to partake of His Passion, and to join the mil-

lions through the ages who will preach His Gospel of universal salvation.

O Princely Child, make of us all, wise men and courageous women, obedient children who will follow wherever you

lead us; That means being faithful to meditation on the truth, sharing what we learn with others, taking part when pos-

sible in prayer and parish activities. This is the way for us to be light-bearers, lighting up the darkness and confusion in

the world in which we live. May that Light shine in within our Parish Family! Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

God our Father, all the elements of na-

ture obey your command. We praise

and thank you for your protection dur-

ing the hurricane season We ask again

to guide us through a new year, free of

any earthquakes, floods, natural disas-

ters and all acts of terrorism. Bless our

families and bring peace to all nations.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus

Christ who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever

and ever. Amen.
