Notes ON THE PROGRAMAll program notes by Dan Forrest

In Paradisum, written several yearsbefore Forrest’s Requiem, takes its titlemore from Scripture than from the tra-ditional “In Paradisum” Requiemmovement, since this setting uses avariety of scriptural texts which speakof God’s compassionate promises ofcomfort. The opening bars presentmassive chords in a highly animatedtexture; these “pillars” not only repre-

sent the unshakeableness of the textswhich follow, but also serve as a musi-cal basis from which most of the rest ofthe piece is constructed. The variousScriptural promises are then woventogether, supported by varying refer-ences to these pillar chords, before thesublime ending, in which eternity callsto the listener from the heavens.

DAN FORREST In ParadisumPerformance time: 13 minutes

Commissioned in 2010 by the BrehmCenter for Worship in Los Angeles,Dan Forrest’s Te Deum combines ele-ments of ancient music, tonal music, and more modern music, as homage tothe long musical lineage of Te Deumsettings. The first movement is a fairlysectional treatment of the text, unifiedby the recurrence of the opening chant-like melody. The second movement

shares a veiled connection to this chanttheme, but unfolds in a different sound-world, evoking a more imitative styleas it works towards its climax. Thethird movement lets loose a torrent ofasymmetrical meters in its own sound-world of speech rhythms, before finallygiving way to one last gesture unifyingthe entire work.

DAN FORREST Te DeumPerformance time: 20 minutes

Psalm of Ascension (2015) sets por-tions of two Hebrew “Ascension”Psalms which would have been sung asthe ancient Jews returned from captivi-ty to freedom. The specific scripturalnarrative can be seen as a metaphor fora broader redemption theme – which

speaks universally to all humanity. ThePsalm texts are set first separately, as achorale and a fugue, before the twothemes are eventually presented simul-taneously. This performance is theworld premiere of the full orchestralversion.

A Requiem, at its core, is a prayer forrest – traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements of Dan Forrest’sRequiem for the Living (2013), howev-er, form a narrative just as much for theliving, and their own struggle with painand sorrow, as for the dead. The open-ing movement sets the traditional“Introit” and “Kyrie” texts – pleas forrest and mercy – using ever-increasingelaborations on a simple three-notedescending motive. The second move-ment, instead of the traditional “DiesIrae”, sets Scriptural texts that speak ofthe turmoil and sorrow which facehumanity, while yet invoking musicaland textual allusions to the “DiesIrae”. This movement juxtaposesaggressive rhythmic gestures with long, floating melodic lines, including quotesof the “Kyrie” from the first move-ment. The Agnus Dei is performed next(a departure from the usual liturgicalorder) as a plea for deliverance andpeace; the Sanctus, following it,becomes a response to this redemption. The Sanctus offers three different

glimpses of the “heavens and earth, fullof Thy glory”, all of which develop thesame musical motive: an ethereal open-ing section inspired by images of spacefrom the Hubble Space Telescope, astirring middle section inspired byimages of our own planet as viewedfrom the International Space Station, and a closing section which brings thelistener down to Earth, where citiesteem with the energy of humanity. TheLux Aeterna which then closes thework portrays light, peace, and rest –for both the deceased and the living.

In some cases, the traditional texts havebeen re-arranged slightly. Some extra-liturgical texts have been interpolated, and the traditional “Dies Irae” hasbeen replaced by a biting essay on thevanity and pain of existence. The twomovements which then follow havebeen inverted from their usual order:the Agnus Dei is offered as a prayer tothe Lamb of God for an answer to painand sorrow, and the Sanctus then fol-lows as an awe-inspired response.

Taken from the Book of Common Prayer

We praise thee, O God: we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee: the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud: the Heavens, and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubin and Seraphin: continually do cry,Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Sabaoth;Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty: of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles: praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets: praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs: praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world: doth acknowledge thee; The Father: of an infinite Majesty;Thine honourable, true: and only Son;Also the Holy Ghost: the Comforter.Thou art the King of Glory: O Christ.Thou art the everlasting Son: of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man: thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s wombWhen thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death: thou didst open the Kingdom ofHeaven to all believers.

Thou sittest at the right hand of God: in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come: to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants: whom thou hast redeemed with thyprecious blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy Saints: in glory everlasting.

[added later, mainly from Psalm verses:]O Lord, save thy people: and bless thine heritage.Govern them: and lift them up for ever.Day by day: we magnify thee; And we worship thy Name: ever world without end.Vouchsafe, O Lord: to keep us this day without sin.O Lord, have mercy upon us: have mercy upon us.O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in thee.O Lord, in thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded.

Psalm of AscensionDAN FORREST

Text based on Hebrew Psalms 124, 126

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, may all His people now say, when men rose up against us:Our hope is in the Name of the LORD who made heaven and earth.

When the LORD returned us again to our people,we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then said they among the nations,The LORD has done great things,we are filled with joy!
