Pavane, Op. 50

Gabriel Fauré was basically a lyricist whoexcelled in small, intimate forms – pianopieces, chamber music, works for smallchorus, and especially songs. Fauré himselfsaidthathismusicexemplified“theeminentlyFrench qualities of taste, clarity and senseof proportion.” He hoped to express “thetasteforclearthought,purityofform,andsobriety.”

ThePavanewaswritten in1887,aboutthesametimeastheRequiem.ItremainsoneofFauré’smostpopularpieces,asix-minutegemfeaturingahauntingmelodyassociatedprimarily with the flute. In the openingsection, the flute announces a tender,melancholic melody, which is answered byvarying combinations of woodwinds. Thecentralsectionconsistsofarathervigorousfigure heard four times in the violins, andcontinued by the violas. The music slipsalmost imperceptively back to the melodicmaterialof thefirstsection,which isheardagaininaslightlyvariedform.

Fauré wrote the Pavane for a wealthyand glamorous patroness of the arts, theCountess Greffulhe. She in turn gilded thelily by arranging for her cousin, Robert deMontesquiou,towriteatexttobesungbyaninvisiblechorus.Thesaccharinepoemaboutpastorallife,writteninthestyleofVerlaine,ismerelyatextualoverlayandaddsnothingessentialtothemusicitself.However,onthe

Gabriel Fauré avait avant tout un talentlyriqueetexcellaitdanslesformesmusicalesminiatures, intimes – pièces pour piano,musique de chambre, œuvres pour petitchœur, mais surtout les mélodies. Fauré a composé la Pavane en 1887,à peu près en même temps que le célèbreRequiem. Fauré once described the Pavaneas “carefully wrought, but otherwiseunimportant.” Unimportant the work maybe, but it is music of a highly refined soul,musictotallydevoidofpomporglitter,yetimbuedwithirresistiblecharm.

Tout le monde sait que Mozart étaitun enfant prodige, mais peu savent quesur ce plan, Saint-Saëns était son égal etmême plus. À trois ans déjà, ce derniersavait jouer du piano; à cinq ans, il pouvaitlire des partitions orchestrales complètes;et à dix ans, il donnait son premier récitalde piano. Comme il est mort très vieux,Saint-Saëns a vu défiler plusieursgénérations de compositeurs – combiende gens peuvent se vanter d’avoir connupersonnellement Berlioz et Stravinsky?Il avait l’oreille absolue et une mémoireinfaillible, pouvait exécuter en lecture àvue n’importe quelle partition, et signaitdes critiques pleines de verve. It is common knowledge that Mozart wasachildprodigy,but fewpeople realize thatSaint-SaënswaseverybitMozart’sequalandthensomeinthisrespect.Attheageofthree,hewasplayingtunesonthepiano;atfivehewasreadingfullorchestralscores;attenhegavehispianodebutrecital.Hisexceptionallylonglifestretchedacrossseveralgenerationsofcomposers–howmanyothermencouldclaimtohavepersonallyknownbothBerliozand Stravinsky? He had perfect pitch andperfect memory, could sightread anything,and wrote lively criticism. In 1908, hebecamethefirstfamouscomposertowritemusicspecificallyforafilm(CharlesPathé’sThe Assassination of the Duke of Manners).

As forhismusic, if it fails toplumbtheemotionaldepths,itcertainlycompensatesinelegance,charmandgrace.ThegreatFrenchpianistAlfredCortotusedtosaythatSaint-Saëns had “more verve than feeling,” whileauthor Romain Rolland commented that“hewas theonlygreatcomposerwhowasnotagenius.”Theseremarksarenotmeantto be disparaging. Saint-Saëns excelled ina specific style, and he did it supremelywell. A sense of effortlessness and naturalfacilitypervadeshismusic.Hecomposed“asnaturallyasatreeproducesapples,”toquote

The Third Concerto is so idiomaticallywrittenforthesoloistanddisplayssuchaneasy fluency that it is almost certain thatthe composer incorporated advice fromthe virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, who gavethe first performance on January 2, 1881.Among the more notable of the manyfelicitous moments in the work, one canpoint to the opening theme played by thesoloist in the violin’s low range where itstoneisatitsrichestandmostexpressive;thespectacular series of arpeggios that closethe movement and take the soloist everhigherintothestratosphere;theelegantandlanguid barcarolle tune sung by the soloistin theslowmovement; thehauntingeffectattheendofthemovementwherethesoloviolin plays slow arpeggios in harmonicstwo and three octaves above a clarinet inits chalumeau (low) register; the dramaticrecitativeforviolinandorchestrathatopensthe finale; the movement’s wide-ranging,catchy, impeccably written principal themein the gypsy style; and the soloist’s varieddevelopments of the chorale-like themethatisfirstpresentedbytheorchestra’sfullviolinsection.

Even the most casual of tourists in Pariscannotfailtobeimpressedbythechurchesandcathedrals in thiscity, inbothquantityandquality.Likewise,therearefewmusicalcapitals in the world that can claim such adistinguished lineage of great composerswho have sat at the organs in theseedificeslargeandsmall,fromMarc-AntoineCharpentier to Olivier Messiaen. GabrielFauré too played an important role in thistradition. After a series of smaller posts,hebecamechieforganistat theMadeleinein1896,buthehadalreadybeenaregularsubstitute there for Théodore Dubois andSaint-Saëns. Itwas inthischurchlycontextthatFauré’sRequiemwaswrittenandgivenits first performance at a midday burialserviceonJanuary16,1888.

The music heard at the 1888 premierewas, however, considerably different fromwhat isperformedatmostconcertstoday.There were no brass or woodwind partsat all; there were only five movements (no“Offertoire”or“Liberame,”whichmeantnobaritonesoloisteither); thesolo role in the“PieJesu”wassungbyaboysoprano;andthestrings (without violins) were probably justa handful in number to balance the chorus(boysandmenonly)ofabouttwenty.MuchaswethinkofFauré’sRequiemasamodelofrestraintandintimacy,itwasobviouslyevenmore so in its original version. Five yearslater, in1893,Faurépreparedanexpandedversion, which incorporated two additionalmovements (the “Offertoire” was writtenin1889,the“Liberame”waybackin1877as an independent piece for baritone andorgan)andpartsfortrumpetsandhorns.ThethirdandfinalversionwasdoneforFauré’s

Words like gentle, subdued, soothing,reticent,intimateandrestrainedoftencometomindwhilelisteningtothisRequiem,butitisnosecretthatFauréregardeddeathquitedifferentlyfromothercomposersoffamousRequiems,menlikeBerlioz,DvorákandVerdi.“I have instinctively sought toescape fromwhatisthoughtrightandproperafteralltheyears of accompanying burial services ontheorgan!,”hereportedtoLouisAguettantin 1902. “I know it all by heart. I wantedto write something different.” In the sameconversation, Fauré referred to his “lullabyofdeath,”noting that tohim,deathwas “ahappy deliverance, an aspiration towardshappiness above, rather than as a painfulexperience.” Fauré’s music speaks to uswith such immediacy and directness thatcommentary on each individual movementis almost superfluous. However, it mightbe fitting to append the notes written byÉmileVuillermoz(1878-1960),whostudiedcompositionwithFauréandchampionedhismusicinthecapacityofauthorandcritic:

“His‘Kyrie’hasthenobilityandsimplicityof an ancient tomb of perfect line andproportions.His ‘Offertoire’ isameditationthat goes down into the depths of oursubconscious mind and stirs up troubling

In 1991, Emmanuel Krivine led the NAC Orchestra’s first performance of Fauré’s Requiem, with KevinMcMillan and Shari Saunders as soloists. Donna Brown and Gaétan Laperrière were the soloists for theorchestra’smostrecentinterpretationofthiswork,givenin2007underthedirectionofPinchasZukerman.

Canadian born violinist A. Timothy Chooiis enrolled at the Curtis Institute of MusicstudyingwithIdaKavafian.Attheageof16,Mr.Chooicapturedthe2010GrandPrixofthe Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’sStandard Life Competition. He made hisdebut performance with the Orchestresymphonique de Montréal under thedirection of Jean-François Rivest and wasinvitedbacktoperformunderthebatonofKentNagano.

Winner of the 2013 Vadim RepinInternationalScholarshipAudition,Mr.Chooiperformed at the Weill Recital Hall inCarnegie Hall, New York City. He has alsoreceived an award from the Sylva GelberMusic Foundation, and the ExceptionalYoung Artist Prize at the 2014 MenuhinCompetition.

The recipient of two GRAMMY® awards in2011(BestClassicalAlbum,andBestChorusPerformance, for Verdi’s Requiem), DuainWolfe is in his 14th season of preparingchoral works for the National Arts CentreOrchestra, his 20th season as director oftheChicagoSymphonyChorus,andhis30thseasonasfounder-directoroftheColoradoSymphony Chorus. He also directs choralworks at the Aspen Music Festival, theRavinia Festival and the Berkshire ChoralFestival. For twenty years he worked aschorusmasterandconductorfortheCentralCityOperaFestival.

Well known for his work with children,in 1999, Duain Wolfe retired from theColoradoChildren’sChorale,anorganizationthathefoundedandconductedfor25years.

In 2008, Mr. Wolfe conducted theChicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorusin a tribute concert of choral/orchestralmasterworks as the culmination of theChorus’s season-long 50th-anniversarycelebration. As a choral clinician, vocalcoachandadjudicator,hemakesasignificantcontributiontothequalityandappreciationofvocalmusicinCanadaandabroad.Manyof his voice students have establishedsuccessfulcareersontheoperaticstage.

AgraduateoftheUniversityofOttawa,Mr. Ewashko completed six years of post-graduate studies at the Hochschule fürMusik und darstellende Kunst and theConservatory of Music in Vienna, Austria,withtheassistanceoftheCanadaCouncil.Hehaspreparedchorusesformanyprestigiousconductors,includingSirColinDavis,TrevorPinnock, Mario Bernardi, Gabriel Chmuraand Jane Glover. Formedin1992asaselectgroupchosenfora livebroadcastmarking50yearsofRadioCanada International, the Ewashko Singershavedevelopedintooneofthemostflexiblevocal ensembles in the National CapitalRegion.

From Beethoven, Mahler and Verdi toRichard Rodgers and Howard Shore, theyskilfullyperformmusicacrossawiderangeof genres and languages. Highlights of thecurrentseasonhaveincludedaperformanceof music by Roman Hurko in memory ofHolodomor, the forced famine in Ukrainein the 1930s, and Schnittke’s Concertofor Choir. In 2015, they will again performworks by Roman Hurko, this time inNewYorkCity.

In addition to their own concert series,theEwashkoSingersalsoregularlycombinetheir vocal talent with other choirs forperformances with the National ArtsCentre Orchestra. This season they wereheard singing in Brahms’s profound choralmasterpiece Schicksalslied, and in Junethey will be performing in a Pops concertfeaturingthemusicofJohnWilliams.
