Lean ThinkingSpeaker Name:TitleCredentialsthis is the speaker intro slide and will not be used if the instructor is giving the lecture5Why do Startups Fail? The vast majority of startups fail NOT because they could not build a great product or technology, but because no one wanted the product! Steve Blank

This means that before you build your App, you need to understand what will sell, to whom it will sell, and for how much it will sell. There must be a need for it!

Steve blank is a successful entrepreneur that now teachs entrepreneurship to both undergraduate and graduate students at U.C. Berkeley, Stanford University and the Columbia University. 6What is Lean Thinking?A combination of the Lean Startup Model and Design Thinking, two strategies of approaching product design and development.Way back Henry Ford created the assembly line which in the day was the best way to automate production. After WWI the Japanese adopted many of the practices of Ford, and others, and created the TPS - Toyota Production System. It was the transfer of these methods back to the US that the term Lean was coined. LeanLean refers to a set of methodologies that expose the relationship between what you think about a product and what is true about that productIn the customer development process Lean refers to a set of methodologies that exposes the honest relationship between what you think (hope, wish, rationalize) about a new business or product and what is true. Why Lean? Why is it important to apply Lean Thinking to this program?

Using Lean is important because no matter how great a thing is that you build - if nobody will pay you money for it you can't build a business around it. In your case, with this program, you can't win this competition if you don't spend the time understanding the customer and the market for the solution you think up. The judging criteria will tell you that.

Also - because you only have 10 weeks total - and the first few weeks here at the corporate site will be spent on learning HOW to be lean, the next few weeks being Lean and the next few weeks building a product and a presentation that shows the problem, the solution, the market and business model for capturing that market. With all that - you have a chance at winning.

Oh - yeah - and you are going to learn to code too! Phew! That is a lot of stuff to do so there is no time to waste! This program is designed to give you access to be working on your company and your product whenever you have time. The reason you were introduced to a simple project management and Scrum in the first week is because Lean is hard. It really is a scientific approach to a business - and requires being pretty disciplined when you are working the process - both toward the business and your development efforts. Anyway - moving on!Feedback Loop

The Feedback Loop supports the process of experimentation. The process is a cycle and the cycle depends on what you learn.

The important thing about Lean is that you go through the cycle until you have found problem/solution fit and then product/market fit.

The BML loop is a process that is used in all fields where things are designed and developed, not just software or startups, but graphic design, advertising, entertainment, engineering, fashion, industrial design etc etc

Build - We build lots of things before we actually get to the product - surveys, models, prototypes (both paper and digital) presentations, pitches.

Measuring is analyzing change based on the results of a test

Learning is integrating the results of your test into the next part of the cycle - whether that is finding out more about the markets or actually building the product.

Lean Thinking

During any of the cycles you will be doing one of these throughout the program

Ideation is brainstorming - just means to be coming up with new ideas about how to improve at any stage of the process in your startup

Research - you will research everything that you spend time building - not heavy write a paper research - but finding out something about what you need to test to go to the next step.

Define - means to state something clearly - in our case we want to write down what we are going to test

Implement: Doing something - sending out a survey, doing customer interviews, doing usability testing

Validate: to say that what you think is supported by the results of your test

Prototypes are rudimentary demonstrations and examples of the product in early stages. Like your market you will refine your product incrementally based on what you learn in testing.

Lean DoingTesting our assumptions about everything: the user/customer, the problems, the needsSpeaking to real customers as much as possible(moms and friends don't count unless they are your customer)Learning as much as we can about our market and our business quicklyMaking consistent, incremental steps toward launching our business with an iterative approachCourtesy: Launchbit - Launch your StartupThat might sound complicated...but it is not. These are the actions you will take during this program. You will always be doing one of them!

This is it in a nutshellApplying Lean ThinkingBrainstorm Science Education problemHypothesize a solution to the problemTest what you think is true about the problem and solution by talking to potential users Validate every aspect - problem, solution, product, marketFind and validate a viable business modelBuild a minimum viable product (your app)

Lean Thinking is a mashup of of the very best practices across all aspects of the modern lean movement.

What will you learn how to do in this program...

and in the end come out with a viable business for your App.Enter Lean

One approach is to ask the students to think-pair-share what they think the main point of this video is.

30 seconds to think, 2-3 minutes to talk with pair, then a couple of share outs14

Test the Assumptions about User Problem Solution Who is the user/customer? What is their problem or unmet need? What is solution?

Testing our assumptions about everything: the user/customer, the problems, the needsLets look at how these products solve problems for users

Elemental Madness: An application developed by Technovation Team to help students study Chemistry by answering jeapordy style questions.

Build a Bird is an Iridescent created app to inspire users to be curious about the world. Specifically, the app will help users gain an appreciation for how birds have adapted to survive and thrive in specific environments.

Symple App is a mobile app designed for chronically ill patients to track symptoms and triggers to confirm diagnosis and refine treatment plans.

Activity: BrainstormingSet a clear goalTimebox sessionAppoint a person to record ideas - ScribeRules of Engagement: Write down main ideasPiggy-back ideasNO criticism of any ideaDO NOT evaluate an ideaWhat are you brainstorming about? For your first session you will brainstorm Company names. Then choose your name.

For the second session you will be brainstorming ideas for your app. Go to the Brainstorming Tab in Workspace.

If you already spent some time on this we probably heard your idea at Stand Up so you have a head start. Dont stress too much about your idea - just get three ideas that you might want to work on so you can use Lean Thinking to see what the best idea is.

Set how much time will you allow for Brainstorming - you have 50 minutes for this segment in total so be smart about using your time. Suggesting no more than 12 minutes. Again - this is not the idea you HAVE to work on - just an idea to work on for today.

Brainstorming

Find the Brainstorming tab in your teams Technovation Workspace on Google DocsNavigate to the Technovation Workspace for this activity

17Get Ready to ResearchGroup the ideas by subject/topicsWrite a problem statementBrainstorm possible solutions to the problem statement (record in Workspace)Once you have come up with some ideas for something to work on - group the ideas by subject or topic and write problem / solution statements in the Workspace tab Prob/Sol

Examples of groups to sort ideas into - Problem / Solution / Customer / End User / Competitor

Problem / Solution

Find the Problem/Solution tab in your teams Technovation Workspace on Google DocsYou need to think deep and find a few problems and solutions to research, though you may have a favorite. During your research you may be exposed to aspects of prob/sol you were not aware of an something new might emerge - write those down and get into the Workspace if they are relevant.Market ResearchThink of:People who might have this problemOnline communities that would be interested in a solution to the problemOther solutions designed to solve the problem (may or may not be software)Companies that sell other stuff to prospects 1) Academics / Scientists / Patients / Teachers / Drivers / Astronauts / Pilots / Travelers / 2) University websites / Government Agency sites / Hospital sites / National Organizations / Conferences (keynote speakers)3) Search for references to the problem on the web4) Search for companies that sell anything to the target prospects to learn about their methods on the web5) Set up Google Alerts for any thought leaders and / or companies that are talking about the problem or solutionMarket Research

Find the Market Research tab in your teams Technovation Workspace on Google DocsRecord what you learn about the problem solution you are researching in the Mrkt Research tabReminder:Weekly ReflectionsWhat did your team like about this week? What challenges did your team have this week?Anything else your team would like to share? Each week you will write in the Weekly Reflections section of the Technovation Workspace answering these questions. All of your team (mentor, teacher and instructor) will be reading your response and your instructor will respond to you.

You will write these reflections at the your school site meeting.
