RADAR Simulation SAR

• Radar Designers developed methods to synthetically create

a large antenna by taking advantage of the forward motion

of the ownship, and thus was born Synthetic Aperture Radar

(SAR)

• SAR processing requires phase corrections for every

pulse the radar receives. Doppler filtering is used to

provide corrections

> The use of Doppler filtering precludes scanning

directly along the ownship’s flight path

RADAR Simulation Spot & Strip SAR

The advent of SAR processing gave rise to several applications.

Spotlight mode (Spot-SAR)

• The radar beam is continuously trained on a target area while the

ownship continues along its flight path. This mode allows the radar

operator to maintain surveillance over a designated area for long

periods of time, and can also be used to produce detailed maps. It

can also be used for target identification.

Strip SAR

• Similar to a Spot-SAR for which the position is updated with the

ownship motion

Inverse SAR (ISAR)

> ISAR is used in maritime environment for target

identification, when the sea state doesn’t allow

the use of Spot-SAR. When the sea state is at

value 2 or higher, the target has a rotational

motion with respect to the ownship.
