Sachihiro OMURATokyo

1 INTRODUCTION

The Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology of

the Middle Eastern Culture Center in Japan conducted

its annual archaeological survey from October 23

through November 11, 2005, in Ankara and K›rflehir

provinces in Central Anatolia. The archaeological

survey began after the 20th excavation season of

Kaman-Kalehöyük was finished. In the previous two

years the team surveyed over 105 sites during the

general survey in the northern and the western areas of

Tuz Gölü (The Salt Lake).

The purposes of the general survey in Central

Anatol ia this season were: f irs t ly, to identify

archaeological sites in Central Anatolia, secondly,

to determine the distribution of the material culture

that has been identified during the excavations

of Kaman-Kalehöyük, and thirdly, to confirm the

conditions of the sites which were surveyed by us

in previous years. From 1986 to 2004, the team has

surveyed artificial mounds of the types called höyük,

hüyük and tepe in Turkish, and flat sites called düz

yerleflim yeri in Turkish.

The 2005 general survey consisted of the following

members: Dr. Sachihiro Omura, Dr. Masako Omura,

Dr. Kimiyoshi Matsumura, Mamoru Yamashita, Shinya

Suzuki and Kiyoko Morota. Mr. Celal Özdemir from

Amasya Archaeological Museum represented the

Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General directorate of

Monuments and Museums.

During the general survey, Prof. Dr. Tahsin Özgüç

passed away on the 27th of October 2005. We would like

to show our most sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. Tahsin

Özgüç for offering us his valuable and helpful advice

during the years that he was with us.

2 AREA OF THE SURVEY IN 2005

In 2003 and 2004, the general surveys were carried

out in the fiereflikoçhisar, Kulu, and Bala districts of

Ankara and Konya provinces. The aim of the general

survey in these last two years was to determine the

distribution of the material culture that has been

identified during the excavations of Kaman-Kalehöyük,

in particular the Iron Age material, corresponding to

Stratum IIc and IId at Kaman-Kalehöyük.

In 2005, the general survey was conducted in the

Kulu district of Konya province and the Bala district

of Ankara province. These areas are grids K-27, K-28,

L-27, L-28, L-29, and M-29. The team had surveyed

in these areas in 1992, 1993 and 1998. The reason for

doing the general survey in the same areas is to monitor

the conditions of the sites investigated in the previous

years.

and cemetery, called mezarl›k in Turkish (3 sites).

The locations of the sites were identified through

GPS, sites were measured with a total station, and

surface artifacts were collected. Photographs of the

artifacts were taken at the camp. The sites were given

names in the same manner as in the previous years.

4 R E S U L T S O F T H E 2 0 0 5 G E N E R A LSURVEY AND COMPARISON WITHKAMAN-KALEHÖYÜK

Forty-six sites were surveyed in Konya and Ankara

provinces in 2005. Some of the sites had been surveyed

in 1992, 1993 and 1998. The reason for re-examining

these sites was to monitor their condition as compared

to previous years. For instance, although Bahçehisar

(05-05) was surveyed in 1992 and 2004, reinvestigation

in 2005 identified new illegal digging activity at the site.

In the general survey of 2005, the sites surveyed

had four different shapes: a) mound, 18 sites, b) flat,

16 sites, c) tumulus, 11 sites, and d) cemetery, 1 site.

Nineteen sites had been surveyed in 1992, 1993, and

1998, and 27 sites were newly surveyed in 2005.

The artifacts collected from the sites were mostly

earthenware shards from the Chalcolithic Period to the

Ottoman Period. No artifacts were found at tumulus

sites. On the mound sites, the artifacts date mainly from

the Chalcolithic Period to the Iron Age. On the flat sites,

the artifacts date mainly from the Roman Period through

the Ottoman Period, with some exceptions. At the flat

sites, it is common to find that artifacts are mainly from

a single cultural period or two cultural periods. This

712006 Preliminary Report of the 2005 General Survey in Central Anatolia

tendency has been found during almost all the general

surveys conducted by this team in Central Anatolia from

1986 through 2004.

No mounds belonging to the Neolithic Period

were found in 2005. From 1986 to 2004, the Neolithic

sites were identified mainly in the eastern, western and

southern areas of Tuz Gölü, the Salt Lake. This indicates

that there was no Neolithic cultural sphere in the

northwestern area of the Salt Lake.

S i t e s f rom the Cha lco l i th i c Pe r iod were

identified in Bahçehisar (05-05), Çiftlik Mevkii

(05-10), Körçeflme 1 (05-11), G›re Yunak (05-13),

Höyük-Sar›yayla (05-24), Hac› Baddal›n Deflirmeni

(05-29), Höyük-Yergömü (05-32), Höyük-Kutluhan

(05-34), Höyük-Balç›khisar (05-39), P›narbafl› 1 (05-40),

Höyük-Durup›nar (05-42) and A¤ada¤› Mevkii (05-46).

Large amounts of pottery were collected at Körçeflme 1

(05-11), G›re Yunak (05-13), Höyük-Sar›yayla (05-24),

Hac› Baddal›n Deflirmeni (05-29) and Höyük-Kutluhan

(05-34). Incised earthenware shards of the type

identified in the northern area of the Salt Lake in the

2002 and 2003 general surveys were not found. Most of

the Chalcolithic Period sherds from the 2005 survey are

highly polished with a smooth outer surface. The paste

is rather coarse, containing stone particles and traces

of plant temper. The most distinguishing characteristic

of the earthenware shards of the Chalcolithic Period

collected in the general survey is that the rims of the

earthenware shards become thinner towards the top.

The rim profiles are very similar to those from the

Chalcolithic site of Aliflar Hüyük. Previous surveys

in the southern area of the Salt Lake found very small

numbers of this kind earthenware. This seems to indicate

that the cultural sphere of this kind of earthenware was

in the areas surrounded by the K›z›l›rmak river, but no

further to the south. The 2005 survey area seems to be

included in the cultural sphere of Aliflar Hüyük in the

Chalcolithic Period.

Ear thenware sha rds of the Ear ly Bronze

Age were collected at Karakuyu Yayla (05-04),

Bahçehisar (05-05), Çelebinin Çeflme (05-06),

Körçeflme 1 (05-11), 2 (05-12), G›re Yunak (05-13),

Höyük-Kutluhan (05-34), Mezarl›k-Balç›khisar (05-38),

Höyük-Balç›khisar (05-39), P›narbafl› 1 (05-40),

Höyük Tepesi (05-44) and A¤ada¤› Mevkii (05-46). In

particular, many were gathered at Bahçehisar (05-05),

Çelebinin Çeflme (05-06), G›re Yunak (05-13) and

Höyük-Balç›khisar (05-39). However, the typical

painted earthenwares dating to the second half of the

third millennium B.C. – Aliflar III, Çiradere, Delice

and Intermidiate – were not found in the 2005 survey

area. They were identified in past surveys mainly in the

area surrounded by (east of) the K›z›l›rmak, especially

the area from Bö¤azköy to Kültepe. Based on the

distribution of the painted earthenware of the second

half of the third millennium B.C., the K›z›l›rmak River

divides the two cultural spheres to its north and south.

The earthenwares of the Early Bronze Age collected

in 2005 are very similar to those from Stratum IVa

at Kaman-Kalehöyük. In particular, the pan shape

earthenware shards unearthed in Stratum IVa of

Kaman-Kalehöyük were collected at Bahçehisar (05-05),

Çelebibin Çeflme (05-06), G›re Yunak (05-13) and

Körçeflme 1 (05-11). This shape of earthenware was also

found in the Chalcolithic Period of Aliflar Hüyük. There

is a high possibility that this type Early Bronze Age

earthenware had its origins in the Chalcolithic Period.

(05-42), Höyük Tepesi (05-44), and A¤ada¤› Mevkii

(05-46). The distinguishing characteristic of the Middle

Bronze Age earthenware shards collected in the 2005

general survey is that some have a highly polished

brown-red exterior. Similar earthenwares are identified

in Stratum II and Ib of Kültepe-Karum and Stratum

IIIc of Kaman-Kalehöyük. These highly polished

earthenwares were identified at Karakuyu Yayla

(05-04), G›re Yunak (05-13), Höyük-Kutluhan (05-34)

and A¤ada¤› Mevkii (05-46). However, the peculiarly

painted earthenwares also found in Stratum II and Ib of

Kültepe-Karum were not found. In previous surveys,

these painted earthenware shards have been found

only in the area between Bo¤azköy and Kültepe. Many

examples have been found only in Kültepe. Even

though similar painted earthenwares were identified at

Bo¤azköy, Aliflar Hüyük and Kaman-Kalehöyük, they

72 AAS XVS. OMURA

were small in number. This means that the painted

earthenwares from Stratum II and Ib of Kültepe-Karum

are unique in Kültepe. There is a high possibility that

they were produced in Kültepe-Karum. As in previous

surveys, the earthenware shards of the Middle Bronze

Age were gathered mostly on mounds, not flat sites.

(05-02), Karakuyu Yayla (05-04), Çelebinin Çeflme

(05-06), Çorakl›k Mevkii (05-07), Kuruhöyük (05-19)

and particularly at Tafll› Tarla (05-20). At Tafll› Tarla

(05-20) mound, most of the sherds collected belong

to the Late Bronze Age. This site had been surveyed

in 1998 with similar results. Late Bronze Age shards

were collected on the mounds of Kürühöyük (05-19),

Keltepe (05-41) and A¤ada¤› Mevkii (05-46), but in

small numbers. A large number of the sites from which

Late Bronze Age shards were collected in 2005 were

flat sites and low mounds situated on the gentle slopes

of hills. This pattern may be a key to understanding the

settlements of the Hittite Empire Period.

Earthenware shards from the Iron Age were

identified at Kuruhöyük (05-19), Höyük-Sar›yayla

(05-24), K›z›ltoprak (05-30), P›narbafl› 1 (05-40),

Keltepe (05-41) and A¤ada¤› Mevkii (05-46). However,

they were present in small quantities. Iron Age

painted earthenwares were not found in the 2005 or

2004 surveys, especially the painted earthenware

typical of Stratum IIc and IId of Kaman-Kalehöyük.

Gray ware, one of the characteristic earthenwares

of the Iron Age, was identified at Karakuyu Yayla

(05-04) and Çiftlik Mevkii (05-10). They have been

found in Kaman-Kalehöyük Stratum IIb and IIc, and

during previous surveys in large numbers in the area

surrounded by the K›z›l›rmak River.

From 1986 through 2004, the area south of the

K›z›l›rmak River was surveyed. In particular, Aksaray,

Konya and Ni¤de provinces were researched in

1995~1999. Based on the results of the general survey

in these provinces, the distribution area of the gray

ware is the area between Gordion and Kayseri as its

core, extending a little to the south. It is possible that

K›z›ltoprak is in the same cultural sphere.

(05-43). These sites can be categorized into two types,

mound and flat. Most of the post-Iron Age shards,

especially from the Roman Period, were found on flat

sites. This indicates that the settlement changed from

mounds to flat sites in the Roman Period in Central

Anatolia.

During the general survey, 12 tumuli were

identified. There was evidence of illegal digging activity

on the tumuli. However, no artifacts could be found.

Near these tumuli, settlements of the Roman Period were

identified, indicating that the tumuli may date to the

Roman Period.

5 CONCLUSION

The general survey of 2005 in Kulu, Bala and

Haymana districts in Konya and Ankara provinces

explored 46 sites, but the survey of all the sites in the

southern areas of Ankara province and in the western

areas of Konya province could not be completed. Based

on the artifacts found, it is clear that the sites in the

survey area date from the Chalcolithic Period through

the Ottoman Period. Evidence for the culture of the Iron

Age, especially of the first half of the first millennium

B.C., is very weak. Earthenware corresponding to that

732006 Preliminary Report of the 2005 General Survey in Central Anatolia

unearthed from Kaman- Kalehöyük Stratum IIc and IId,

the culture of the first half of the first millennium B.C.,

was not found. Settlements of the Roman and Byzantine

Periods were identified on flat sites. Namely the area

surveyed in 2005 seemed to be used as the settlement

place in the Roman and Byzantine Periods after the

Iron Age, the fourth quarter of the first millennium B.C.

This means that the mounds were used as the settlement

place before that. This tendency was also seen during the

survey of 2004.

The most interesting aspect of this survey was

in relation to the Late Bronze Age. In contrast to the

substantial number of mounds from which Middle

Bronze Age artifacts have been found, there are few

sites that have revealed Late Bronze Age artifacts

(corresponding to Stratum IIIa at Kaman-Kalehöyük).

In 2005, Tafll› Tarla (investigated as Uso in 1998) was

surveyed, and many earthenware shards of the Late

Bronze Age were collected there. A few earthenware

shards of the Roman Period were also found. This

tendency was seen at Datçabelen in 1994, and Kültü in

1998. All the sites at which Late Bronze Age materials

have been found during the surveys are rather flat sites

or very low mounds on the gentle slope of the hill.

According to the date of the artifacts collected on these

sites, these settlements were started in the second half of

the second millennium B.C. This might suggest that they

were used for a limited time in the Late Bronze Age.

This is likely to become a key point in identifying the

settlements of the Late Bronze Age.

In the general survey of 2006, the south central area

of Ankara province will be investigated.
