WHERE CREATIVITYMEETS PURPOSE

For more than 130 years, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) has been a catalyst for creativity in the Twin Cities, the region, and the nation. A private, nationally accredited art and design college, MCAD is home to nearly eight hundred students and focuses on nurturing tomorrow’s creative leaders.

Located in the heart of Minneapolis, a city home to world-class art museums, a theater scene second only to New York, beautiful riverfronts and local lakes, and culturally rich neighborhoods with galleries, parks, and local events, the college shares its campus with one of the nation’s premiere comprehensive art museums, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia).

The college boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including Mac computer labs fully-equipped with the latest software, a light-filled painting studio along with individual painting studio spaces, animation studios, an on-campus printing bureau, gallery spaces, and an extensive art supply store.

Graduates of MCAD have been recruited by Sony Pictures, Nickelodeon, Target, Urban Outfitters, the Walt Disney Company, and many independent design firms, while others establish thriving freelance businesses as artists and designers.

INCLUDES

The Pre-College Summer Session (PCSS) is a three-week, highly structured, and challenging class-room and studio-based experience developed to guide serious art students in the process of maturing as artists and individuals.

Students spend full days under the guidance of professional instructors, immersed in both foundational and intensive major classes. Evenings and weekends provide a chance to build new friendships, explore Minneapolis, and spend dedicated time working in the studios and labs. Trained staff and professional faculty will be with them every step of the journey.

Students stay in air-conditioned, furnished, apartment- style dorms located just across the lawn from the main classroom building. Trained, upper-level MCAD student resident advisors serve as supportive on-campus re-sources while also fostering community and ensuring a safe and fully supervised environment. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided through MCAD’s cafeteria. Special consideration can be given to students’ specific dietary needs.

When not working in their studios, students relax on campus or head off campus on supervised excursions to Minneapolis sites, artists’ studios, and more. It’s a time to refresh and connect. All excursions are included in the tuition.

Upon application, students choose one of the following majors: ANIMATION, COMIC ART, GRAPHIC DESIGN, or PAINTING. Detailed descriptions of each major are found on sub-sequent pages of this brochure. Students may change majors until April 20.

“FOR ME, MCAD WAS A COMPLETE GAME-CHANGER.

IT REALLY OPENED UP MY WORLD TO ONE WHERE

EVERYONE AROUND ME, AS WELL AS MYSELF, WAS

MOTIVATED AND INTERESTED IN ART.”

Animation students learn stop-motion, cell, and digital animation; experiment with several short animated sketches; and produce a final project. They also learn how to storyboard, compose, mold, and render while becoming savvy storytellers, using drawings or sculptures to spin tales. Top animators have a solid foundation in the fine arts alongside experience using both traditional and digital materials. Think: Pixar and video games. MCAD is committed to cutting-edge technology, making it a hotspot for 3D animation. It is also one of only a few schools that teaches hand-drawn 2D techniques. Graduates have found positions with Nickelodeon, FOX, SyFy Channel, Pixel Farm, Children’s Theatre Company, and more.

“PCSS WAS AN INCREDIBLE INTRODUCTION TO ANIMATION. I FEEL MUCH MORE CONFIDENT IN MY ABILITY TO ANIMATE INDEPENDENTLY. I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT ANIMATING AND THE PROGRAMS USED IN ORDER TO EDIT AND

COMPILE FINISHED ELEMENTS OF A FILM.”

STUDENTS' TYPICAL WEEK

Comic art students learn the fundamental lessons of storytelling, character development, penciling, and inking to create short comic book stories and learn the production skills necessary to produce their own edition of comic books.

MCAD is one of the only colleges in the country to offer a comic art degree program. Graduates have taken positions in Marvel Comics, BOOM! Studio, Lucid Publishing, 2D Cloud Studio, and Periscope, and have developed thriving freelance work.

“THIS PROGRAM WAS THE START TO ME FINDING MY IDENTITY AS AN ARTIST. AFTER MAKING MY FIRST COMIC, I ACQUIRED AN UNDERSTANDING THAT I TRULY ENJOYED THE DYNAMICS OF CHARACTER INTERACTION . . . EVENTUALLY LEADING

TO MY CHOICE TO GO INTO CHARACTER-FOCUSED ANIMATION FOR COLLEGE.”

“PCSS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE

EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE SO FAR. IT HAS SHAPED NOT ONLY MY ART, BUT HAS HELPED ME BECOME A MORE CONFIDENT AND INDEPENDENT PERSON.”

—PCSS 2017 GRADUATE

Graphic design students learn to combine text and graphics in support of a message, gaining technical skills in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop—the same programs used by professional designers. Graphic designers work on projects like posters, T-shirt designs, imagery on products like skateboards and bike helmets, packaging, and more.

MCAD is one of U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Graphic Design Schools.” Pre-College students learn from industry professionals and receive guidance from current MCAD design students, opening them up to the expansive career opportunities for MCAD design graduates, which have included MTV, Target, Trek Bicycles, Motorola, Pentagram, and more.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

“ATTENDING PCSS TAUGHT ME A LOT OF THINGS PERTAINING TO GRAPHIC DESIGN THAT I WASN’T EXPECTING BUT THAT MADE ME MORE EXCITED ABOUT

MAKING ART. THE INSTRUCTORS AND STAFF WERE ALL WELCOMING AND EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND MADE THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT VERY

COMFORTABLE AND FUN.”

STUDENTS' TYPICAL WEEK

Painting students learn skills in perception, conceptualization, and imagination, as well as knowledge of color, form, and composition. Students work in a shared studio with still life setups, live models, self-portraits, and digital photographs to see how contrast, color, light, and shadow can illuminate the complexities of their subject matter. Please note: Professional nude models may be used in this program.

MCAD has a fine arts tradition that extends beyond a century, helping to develop artists who have established themselves as preeminent creatives whose work can be found on Broadway, at Urban Outfitters, and locally at the Guthrie Theater and Walker Art Center. Work by MCAD painting alumni can be found in galleries and museum collections nationwide.

Note: Students in the painting major pay a $100 materials fee in addition to program tuition.

“IT WAS A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL FOR. I LEARNED MORE ABOUT MYSELF AS AN ARTIST AND A PERSON

THAN I COULD HAVE EVER IMAGINED. THOSE THREE WEEKS GAVE ME THE COURAGE TO PURSUE EVEN MY WILDEST DREAMS.”

PRE-COLLEGE STUDIO INTENSIVES

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION CLASS

Pre-College Studio Intensives are weeklong classes for teens ages 15–18 on topics including drawing and painting, digital photography and filmmaking, animation and comic art, and graphic design and illustration. Students who successfully complete a Pre-College Studio Intensive are awarded one MCAD credit. Summer 2018 dates will be announced in January. Students do not live on campus during the Pre-College Studio Intensives. Combine three week-long intensives for three elective credits!

The portfolio is the single most important component of an art school application and colleges across the nation are stepping up their requirements for admis-sion. Most require several observational drawings, or drawings made from what the artist sees, rather than from imagination or a photograph.

This studio drawing class is designed to help motivated visual arts students develop exemplary observational drawings for their portfolios. Students will work with still life, landscape, interior, and figurative subject matter as they explore the fundamentals of a good drawing: composition, structure, value, line, and expression.

Studio instruction will be supplemented by art history discussions, visiting artist and MCAD admissions staff presentations, and regular homework assignments. Portfolio Preparation courses are offered throughout the year, both on campus and online.
