1EVENT OVERVIEW

The Youth Business Summit, organised by Pragyan, took place on 23rd of January at Hilton Hotel,

Chennai. The summit involved four guest lectures, and a panel discussion comprising of five panelists.

The event had Ashok Leyland as the Principal Partner. Mastek, Chettinad Builders and Matrix Business

Services were the Associate Partners.

This first of its kind event organized by a student body saw corporates from esteemed organisations like

Ashok Leyland, Caterpillar, National Instruments, Yes Bank, BGR Energy Temenos, Mastek, Visteon,

Dow Chemicals, Latent view Analytics etc. and students from various institutions across India. From

Multinational companies to start ups, technology to management, ideas were shared amongst a mix of

corporate and student sphere. The event saw 7 hours of networking, discussions on innovation,

entrepreneurship, technology revolution and Make in India.

The event was kick-started with the keynote speech from Kumud Srinivasan, President of Intel India also the Chairperson of NIT, Trichy. The idea of leading to tomorrow was better explained with how the present was shaped up by a few visionaries from the past and it is the vision and innovation that is going to bring a better tomorrow. The Moore’s Law of Transistors is a perfect example of what had happened as a vision and revolutionised the technology.

9ENHANCING PRODUCTIVITY IN WORK

The keynote was followed by one from Rajesh Srinivas, Group Executive Vice President, Yes Bank. His session was for students on how to make themselves more employable to meet the demands of the work scenario. It was a hiring strategy that can be employed in startups, corporates and industries, he also gave insights on the characteristic expectations from banks in funding startups. The main theme revolved around how entrepreneurs can hire the right personnel and how to enhance the productivity of the individual, also what are all the expectations of an ideal employee.

The engineering minds were enthralled during this session on Amit Jain, Country Head, Electronics Group, India, Visteon Corporation. The session was based on adapting to changing trends in every industry ,and the need to keep oneself updated.

DRIVING FORWARD THE AUTO REVOLUTION

Sudhakar Ram , the CEO and MD of Mastek, was among the first ones to prove why venturing into entrepreneurship is the most sensible and rewarding investment ever made.Mentored by him, this session was an exploration on how it feels to have been bitten by the startup bug. The 5 steps can be listed as :

One of the main elements of the summit was the panel discussion on the topic “Make in India , but can India make it ?”. It focused on defining what Make in India actually means and also how it was being implemented in various sectors. The discussion held in the form of a crossfire featured panelists from various organizations.

Addressing the Who question, Zubin discussed about the awareness programs that are still lacking in the rural areas of the country, especially in regions like Bihar and other remote locations. He felt that every individual has a huge potential instilled within him, but it all depends the factors that are curtailing him from using those potential.

Dhiraj addressed the How by relating it to the problem of Jugaad (innovative fix). Since jugaad became infamously trending, a lot of people have misunderstood the concept of innovation. The concept of replication of foreign products has to be reduced and investments are to be focused on research and development, rather just on production.

14PANEL DISCUSSION : MAKE IN INDIA

Savitha explained the current educational scenario where it is not only about the number of institutions set up but also the quality of those institutions that mattered. She pointed the difference between skills and competency, where skills refers to the fundamentals while competency is basically across sectors. We got to know about the Teach for India’s initiatives in answering the Who.

Anand pointed out that it is the smart phones that is going to drive the Make in India campaign, while rallying for the campaign it is important to ensure that the goals of every participant must align with what the future holds for the campaign. Building locally for the community and ensuring that it stays for a long term was his views on innovation.
