industry and in the whole world and you become celebrated” he argued.

“So the difference between what we have here and what we have abroad where I trained is that, everybody wants to make impact; they want to leave a name behind and they have an enabling environment that allows them to create a name and to make that name. So my advice here is that, the University itself has to go beyond the i s sue o f pape r publication. The issue of patent, the issue of your influence, your impact in the community has to be brought in in the process of promotion so that they know how many lives, how many industries you have impacted on, what have you patented, how many certificates of patent do you have and from there, people will begin to think in that way. Most academics think about paper publication because that is the emphasis of the University and so the University has to shift radically from the tradition of paper publication into the industrial application of researchers' research” he added.

Born in Ilorin, Kwara State on 24 June 1976, Dr Raji, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geophysics, joined the University as an Assistant Lecturer in 2007. He obtained B.Sc. and M.Sc. Degrees in Geology from the University of Ilorin, 2001-2005 and a PhD from the University of Liverpool 2008-2012.

He won the Faculty of Physical Science Best Researcher Award, at the 2017 Faculty of Phys ica l Sc iences Research Exhibition.

At the 32nd International Conference of Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists held in 2014, Dr Raji won the Best Paper Prize. Prior to this, in 2013, he won the second Prize for Technical Papers Presentation at the 83rd Annual International Conference of the S o c i e t y o f E x p l o r a t i o n Geophysicists held in Houston, U.S.A.

He is one of the many Nigerian researchers that can be found paving the

way for innovative discoveries and conduct ing ground-breaking researches in top universities across the world. Having received his doctorate degree at the University of Liverpool, UK, and working as a post-doctoral researcher at Stanford University, California, Dr. Wasiu Olanrewaju Raji, unlike many of his compeers, who would rather stay abroad possibly because of the lure of new opportunities and higher income, chose to return to Nigeria and is now the Ag. Director of the S t u d e n t s ' I n d u s t r i a l Wo r k Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the University of Ilorin.

While in the United States, Dr Raji had worked in an Exxon Mobil U.S. funded research team as a seismic tomographer to explore how oil could be extracted from u n c o n v e n t i o n a l r e s e r v o i r s , (specifically Shale) and his team was able to make a breakthrough in this research, as a result of which made the country stopped buying oil from many oil-exporting countries i n c l u d i n g N i g e r i a a n d t h e subsequent fall in oil prices.

In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin, Dr. Raji said, “The oil field in West Texas has lot of oil that is l o c k e d i n w h a t w e c a l l unconventional reservoir, the oil cannot move; so they were not able to produce. So, part of my work is, what can we do to extract oil from this locking reservoir, that is what we were doing. I was reporting to people in the industry, I was reporting to Stanford and my team made a breakthrough and that is why you will see that in the late 2014, 2015, the U.S. stopped buying oil from many countries, it was producing its own oil from these unconventional reservoirs”.

One of the great passions of

there would deprive some people the opportunity of learning from me the way I have learnt from people even while I was in this University and when I was in the UK. I then asked myself, why don't I come back home to put back into the system that made me? At a point in time, I won a grant from the Petroleum Technology Development Fund in Nigeria and that grant offset the cost of my PhD training in UK.”

“I feel some level of commitment and indebtedness to the country that paid my school fees; I have to come back. If the professors who taught me in the University decided to stay back in the UK or in the US or to run to Germany, they wouldn't be in the classroom to teach me when I needed their knowledge. So if I fail to come back, I am depr iv ing some people tha t opportunity to learn especially that I have learnt from the top notch University” .

Noting that diversification of the economy especially in terms of agriculture remains the way to go as championed by the p resen t Government, Dr Raji said, “I have

his life is the spread of knowledge and this is why when asked why he chose to return home, he has this to say: “There is need for every individual to define what satisfies him; what I am really saying here is that, when you define what you want in life, when you get it, you will know yes, I got it. Everything is not money. We have brain drain in Nigeria because the desire for money is too high… but as an individual, Rome was built by the Romans.”

“Nigeria will not be built, can never be built by Americans, the Japanese, the Chinese or the Italians; it has to be built by Nigerians and if anybody has that in mind, he will know that wherever he has been or he has gone, whatever knowledge he has acquired, it is to utilise that knowledge to build Nigeria.

“Stanford is one of the best three universities in the world. In the U.S., if you are going for science and engineering, people will choose Stanford over Harvard. When I got to Stanford, I got almost everything I wanted; I still did not feel fulfilled because I felt that my continued stay

The issue of 0.5% or 0.3% for education cannot go anywhere and the citizens have to be ready too, to know that the responsibility on education should not be 100% government” he stressed, adding that individuals, organisations and companies also have a responsibility towards the development of the education sector.

While noting that the curriculum used in Nigerian institutions must be dynamic, responsive and in tune with the needs of the industry, the SIWES Director observed that, “:A lot of people do research for the purpose of promotion; so researches that are done for the purpose of promotion they end up on the shelf. You publish a paper and you put a paper on the shelf and there it is for life but if you have a situation whereby research are driven by specific needs in the industry then the research would not end on the shelf because you will go ahead to solve a need in the industry; from that, you can publish, before you publish, you can patent, then you can produce something substantial or procedural that can solve a problem and you get noticed by the
