As the 2019 general election approaches, an appeal has gone to the electorate to consider the capacity for good governance in electing the next set of leaders

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has described the death of the former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt

Practices Commission (ICPC), Justice Muhammad Mustapha Adebayo Akanbi, as a big loss to his family and the nation.

Prof. Abdulkareem stated this last Tuesday (June 5, 2018), when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the late jurist who died on June 3, 2018 at the age of 85.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the pioneer Chairman of ICPC and former President of the Court of Appeal for speaking to the conscience of the nation at various times, noting that he was one of the very few Nigerians that could be trusted with public fund.

Congratulating the students for making the University proud and for keeping up with the tradition of excellence in the University, Prof. Abdulkareem said that they would personally benefit in the future from the experience gained at such competitions.

The Vice-Chancellor, who reminisced on his school days when he won several awards, encouraged the students not to relent in their studies and to bring more honours to the University. He assured them that they would continue to enjoy the support of the University.

At the Bounce Corruption Public Integrity Debate Competition, held at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, from May 30 to June 1, 2018, the Unilorin team, comprising Hawau Abikan and Omotayo Jimoh, defeated the University of Lagos, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri and the University of Calabar to clinch the top prize.

The triumphant team, which was led to the competition by the Chairman UNILORIN Quiz and Debate Committee, Dr. A. A. Owoade, had earlier defeated the Federal University, Dutse, team and the University of Benin team in the

knockout rounds to make the finals of the competition held at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja.

Round Debate Championship which held from May 5 to May 9, 2018 at the University of Calabar, the Unilorin delegation, led by Mr. A. A. Lawal went to the competition as the defending champions, having won the 2017 edition of the competition and went ahead to clinch the first position back-to-back.

The team, comprising David Ejim, team coach, and Justice Eyo, won against teams from the University of Calabar, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri and another team of David Onyesom and Olamide Olanrewaju from the University of Ilorin made it to the finals.

The Unilorin team also emerged champion at the FUTA IV Debate Competition hosted by the Federal University of Technology, Akure from May 27 to June 1, 2018.

Two Unilorin teams, those of Orire Solihu and Dere Abdulhameed as well as Oso Olasunkanmi and Kalejaiye Musa, made the finals of the Novice stream where they competed against teams from the

host , Federal Univers i ty of Technology, Akure and the University of Port Harcourt, with the team of Oso Olasunkanmi and K a l e j a i y e M u s a e m e r g i n g champions.

In the Main stream, two Unilorin teams, comprising Justice Eyo and Omolola Ambrose as well as David Onyesom and Sanusi Sodiq, represented the University in the competition's finals against teams from Covenant University and the Federal University of Technology, Akure where the team of David Onyesom and Sanusi Sodiq came tops.

The Captain of the Debate Team, Mr. Abolarin Mohammed, also emerged as the best public speaking adjudicator and the second-ranked debate adjudicator at the competition.

In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin after the reception in the Vice-Chancellor's Office, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ajibade, congratulated the students and the University for the success recorded by the Unilorin debating team, while thanking the Vice-Chancellor for providing the enabling environment to make such feat possible.

Olowoleni, presented a letter of condolence to the family on behalf of the management.In the condolence letter, the Registrar described the late Justice Akanbi as a friend and strong supporter of the University, who was always ready and willing to contribute towards the growth and development of the

institution. She said that the University is happy to have been associated with such a remarkable personality who was a renowned lawyer, a retired Judge and President of the Court of Appeal as well as the p i o n e e r C h a i r m a n o f t h e Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission. While reliving the memories of the departed sage, the Registrar noted that “during his lifetime, he displayed dignity, courage and honour and brought these qualities to bear on his assignments both at the Bar and Bench. Late Justice Akanbi was a living library of progressive

and spiritual ideas for the younger generation. In this respect, he mentored a new generation to take over from him. His life showed that age is no barrier to value addition and hard work. He was modest and exhibited this quality when he bowed out of the ICPC in 2005, even when he had the right of tenure extension.” The University remarked that late Justice Akanbi “left enduring legacies behind which include his Foundation, Library and Resource Centre and highly responsible and thoroughbred children”.

(Contd. from front page) Prof. Oladosu, whose lecture was titled "Islam and Good Governance: The Case of Nigeria” regretted the inelegant position of things in the country s ince independence despite her numerous comparative advantages. To ensure a paradigm shift in the regrettable state of affairs in the country, often dismissed by critics as "big for nothing", Prof. Oladosu stressed the need for voters to be weary of politicians who care less about the progress of the country but are only interested in self-aggrandizement. The Professor of Islamic Education noted that for the country to claim its rightful place as a world-power, a responsibility imposed on it by its intimidating size, huge natural endowment and high quality manpower, Nigerians must denounce corruption, laziness, violence and every form of barbarism which are now prevalent across the country. Prof. Oladosu also condemned what he described as the “mindless desperation for power and offices” as he challenged Muslim political leaders to desist from self-perpetuation in power, particularly when those they are leading have had enough of their presence. The Chief Imam insisted that Muslim leaders had no choice other than to govern well because there is no justification for inelegant dispositions in the religion they profess as Islam encourages every element of good governance in private and public affairs long before the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) index for good governance was enunciated in 1994.

The Cleric explained that the concept of popular participation, c o n s u l t a t i o n , t r a n s p a r e n c y, responsiveness, equity, economic welfarism and so many other positive attributes that accounted for the growth of the advanced nations are well-established in Islam through several Quranic references which he copiously quoted but often neglected by successive leaders. Prof. Oladosu enjoined Muslims to “promote peace and unity in every situation in order to build a harmonious society devoid of rancour, friction, envy and violence”, noting that in Islam, peace-building takes precedence over the obligatory daily devotions, which he described as “the fundamental essence of Islam”. The erudite clergyman also encouraged Muslims to take the consultation of the Holy Quran seriously, stressing that “the book has a history of tested efficacy as a tool for abiding guidance”. He enjoined Muslims to show disdain for self-adulation, stating that "the little you say about yourself is too much". He also advised religious preachers and other public speakers to always be wary, saying that was the only way the ills of the society could be curtailed.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Prof. Musibau Akanji, advised every Muslim to be mindful of the provisions of the Holy Quran in the i r da i ly l ives . Prof. Akanji, who said that the topic of the lecture was apt and timely considering the closeness of the 2019

general election, opined that it was unfortunate that only nominal impact of Islam was being felt in the nation's politics and economy despite the fact that Muslims constitute the majority of the country's population. In his own remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of I lor in , Prof . Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, commended the brilliance, forthrightness and enormous contributions of the Guest Speaker to the development of our society over the years.

Also contributing, a one-time Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Bayo Lawal, challenged Nigerians to support forthright leaders in order to build a great nation.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the University of Ilorin Muslim Community, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. A. A. Oba, paid glowing tribute to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and his predecessors, particularly those who held the office from 1997 for the various roles they played in the cumulative building of the University of Ilorin Muslim community. He advocated more support from members of the c o m m u n i t y t o e n s u r e t h e accomplishment of its objectives and projects, among which is the proposed Centre for Quranic Memorization. The event attracted dignitaries from within and outside the University community.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem,

has commended the Kwara State government for initiating the two bills that amended the laws regulating the operation of Chainsaw Men and prohibition of charcoal production in the state. Prof. Abdulkareem, who gave the kudos last Tuesday (June 5, 2018), while declaring open the 2018 Northern Africa Regional Meeting (NARM 2018) organised by the International Forestry Students' Association at the University Auditorium, described the two bills as a step in a right direction. The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented on the occasion by the D e p u t y V i c e - C h a n c e l l o r (Management Services), Prof. Bolaji Fatai Sule, said that the two bills

recently passed by the state House of Assembly are aimed at safeguarding the total destruction of forests in the state. Pledging the University management's support for the two bills, Prof. Abdulkareem expressed o p t i m i s m t h a t i f p r o p e r l y implemented, the bi l l s wi l l encourage planting of trees to replace those felled by chainsaw men while illegal production, transportation and sale of charcoal will be curbed. In his presentation, the Keynote Speaker, Prof. Shedrach Olufemi Akande of Biometrics and Forest Inventory, Federal University of Technology, Akure, enjoined students of Forestry to be proud of the course and be bold to tell the world at large what they study so as to spread the importance of forestry to the human race.

Prof. Akande disclosed that the main objective of NARM 2018 was to crea te col labora t ion and intellectual discourse among the part icipants on development management leading to sustainable management of African Forest for the present and future generations. In his own presentation, the Head of the Department of Forest Resources and Management, University of Ilorin, Dr. Fola Babalola, charged the youths to be alive to their roles in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Among the dignitaries that graced the NARM opening ceremony were the Deputy Vice-Chancel lor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; and the Deputy Vice-Chancel lor (Resea rch , Techno logy and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji.

Nigerian engineers have been told to always approach their p r o j e c t s w i t h a n

entrepreneurial mindset in order to be able to solve the problems facing the nation and provide jobs for a large number of jobless and frustrated youth.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, gave this advice last Monday (June 4, 2018) in his welcome address at the fourth edition of the National Engineering Project Exhibition (EPEX) held at the University Auditorium.

In the address, read on his behalf by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. B. F. Sule, Prof. Abdulkareem pointed out that Nigeria and other countries of the world are looking for solutions to their peculiar challenges and engineering projects are key ingredients of those solutions.

At the exhibition hosted by the Facu l ty o f Eng inee r ing and Technology, University of Ilorin, the Vice-Chancellor explained that Engineering Project Exhibition is a platform to showcase and demonstrate

the best of various innovative engineering projects, undertaken by the undergraduate students in Nigeria.

He added that the program is expected to stimulate the innovative and technical skills among students and to motivate them.

He said, “EPEX offers engineering students opportunities to develop independent critical thinking skills, collaborative working skills, oral and written communication and presentation skills as well as marketing skills, thereby building their confidence. The program is expected to reward the engineering students, and assure them that the society still values excellence.”

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the undergraduate project is considered to be an important part of the engineering education process and one of the major processes of independent research that a student would undertake.

Prof. Abdulkareem further said that “the Engineering Projects improve innovative spirit, make t ransformat ion of theory to

applicat ions possible, enrich k n o w l e d g e o n r e n e w i n g technologies, prepare you for career p a t h , r e m i n d y o u o f y o u r responsibilities to your society, boost curiosities and love for studies and improve team building and problem-solving skills and many more.”

H e c o m m e n d e d t h e leadership of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, particularly the Dean, Prof D.S. Ogunniyi, for his tireless, continuous efforts at enhancing the growth, development and reasoning skills among the students.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive President of t h e N i g e r i a n U n i v e r s i t i e s Engineering Students' Association (NUESA), University of Ilorin C h a p t e r , C o m r a d e Yu s u f Musbaudeen explained that one of the primary objectives of the EPEX, is to bridge the gap between the academia and the industry.

The exhibition, which had about 2000 engineering students in attendance, was graced by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya, among other dignitaries and members of staff.

The Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Dr. (Mrs.) Modupe Olowoleni, has commended

the institution's Directorate of Corporate Affairs sustained effort to promote the image of the University through adequate, objective and balanced reports of the University's activities.

Dr Olowoleni gave the commendation last Tuesday (June 5, 2018) when the staff of the Directorate led by the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, paid her a congratulatory visit in her office.

The Registrar, who described information as a powerful instrument in any society, urged the University's information managers to continue to uphold the good principle of information dissemination in the discharge of their duties.

Dr. Olowoleni, however, advised the Directorate staff to show more commitment to their duties by reporting promptly to duties, saying that discipline is a precondition for optimum performance of assigned tasks in any organisation.

T h e R e g i s t r a r , w h o commended the Directorate on its bi-monthly seminar initiative, assured the staff of the management's support and assistance in the areas of training and retraining, and staff welfare anytime the need arises.

Earlier in his remarks, the Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, congratulated Dr. Olowoleni on her well-deserved appointment and prayed Almighty God to guide her steps towards taking decisions that would ultimately lift the University higher.

Mr. Akogun solicited the Registrar's continued support for the Directorate's bi-monthly seminar that was instituted in 2016 to brush up the staff's knowledge on information management in this ICT era.

He also called for the management's sustained assistance in staff's sponsorship for further training in relevant fields of Mass Communica t ion and Publ ic Relations management.

Mr. Akogun then pledged that the Directorate staff would continue to be more diligent in the discharge of their duties towards sustaining the good image of the University and maintaining its high rating among Nigerian and African universities.

The University of Ilorin has been nominated in the “Best Tertiary Institution websire/Portal”

Category for the 2018 ng Award. This was disclosed last Thursday (June 7, 2018) by the Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Dr. (Mrs.) F. M. Olowoleni in a statement made available to Unilorin Bulletin. Dr. Olowoleni said that the nomination is to select the tertiary

institution/university with the best edu.ng website/portal based on how current the website is, the level of local content on the website, ease of use, relevance of the website for delivery of educational services and how dynamic the website is. She further explained that University of Ilorin will be competing with other nominees in this category and the winner will be determined by the number of votes received.

The Registrar therefore called on clients, customers and stakeholders including students and s t a f f t o a c k n o w l e d g e t h e achievements of the University of Ilorin by voting for the institution through the voting mechanism a v a i l a b l e o n l i n e a t www.nira.org.ng/ngawards. The statement added that the voting had been declared open from Thursday, May 10, 2018 and will close by midnight on Friday, June 22, 2018.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem,

has encouraged staff and students of the University to develop positive attitude towards the learning and usage of sign language across the university community.

Prof. Abdulkareem, who disclosed this last Wednesday (June 6, 2018), while declaring open a workshop on sign language organised by the Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf (CSSD), said that the ability to communicate in sign language will go a long way to improving interpersonal relationships within the university community.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, sign language is an international language that enables the signers ample opportunity to communicate effectively with people a c r o s s t h e w o r l d . Prof. Abdulkareem advised m e m b e r s o f t h e U n i v e r s i t y community to endeavour to learn the culture of the deaf students who are also members of the community, in order to break the communication barrier.

The Vice-Chancellor restated his administration's determination to assist the CSSD in all possible ways,

explaining that that was why he gladly approved the request of six additional signers for employment recently.

Prof. Abdulkareem added that the remarkable achievements of the CSSD informed the visit of an official delegation from Gallaudet University, Washington D. C. USA, who was in the University of Ilorin recently with a mission to work out a collaborative agreement with CSSD.

The Vice Chancellor charged the Department of Computer Science to carry out research on how a computer can translate the sign language into the intended word for easy and smooth communication. In her remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his relentless support to the centre towards the realisation of its first workshop. He appealed to staff and students in attendance to avail themselves of the golden opportunity the training is set to offer them.

On his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, who was represented on the occasion by the Head of he Department of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, Dr Olufunmi

Lanre Olaitan, described the training as a window opportunity for participants to learn sign language, which he described as a universal language.

Earlier in his address, the Director of the Centre, Dr Ganiyu Bello, commended the Vice-Chancellor for the swift approval of additional six signers for the centre, and solicited further support in the areas of provision of permanent s t r u c t u r e , u t i l i t y v e h i c l e , maintenance of equipment, and prompt release of the approved budget for the Centre.

Dr. Bello disclosed that the Centre had commenced free sign language training at the Faculty of Education between 5.00p.m and 6.00p.m every Wednesday.

In her lecture on the occasion, an Audiologist from the Centre, Miss Abiola Tenigbola Ojelabi, warned students and staff to desist from the habit of exposing themselves to loud noise or constant use of ear phones as they are capable of causing hearing impairment or outright loss.

The workshop featured practical training on sign language, where alphabet, simple words and sentences were practiced.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem,

has canvassed the establishment of multi-disciplinary Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centres on campus for the testing and instruction of students from the various Faculties in order to save cost and maximize the facilities installed in the centres.

Prof. Abdulkareem made the suggestion last Monday (June 4, 2018) while commissioning 100 thin client computers donated by JKK Lagos, a partner of the University on the development and running of CBT centre.

The Vice-Chancellor, who thanked the company for the donation, promised that the units would be well-taken care of. He,

however, pleaded with the company to ensure that the remaining 100 computers it promised be released on time.

He added that the University would also do everything within available resources to ensure that every cubicle in the centre is filled with the thin client computers.

In her welcome address, the Chairman of the University CBT Committee, Prof. (Mrs.) Sylvia Malomo, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor for having such a good thing commissioned early in his tenure.

T h e C B T C h a i r m a n disclosed that the six CBT halls in the

University have a capacity of 1,450 c o m p u t e r s y s t e m s d u r i n g examinations, submitting that the partnership with JKK has helped greatly in the management and administration of CBT examinations as well as the processing and prompt release of results.

Also in his remarks, the Business Development Manager of JKK, Mr. Yusuf Gafar, said that the company had kept to the guideline given by the University to improve efficiency.

Expressing his confidence that the donated computer systems are unique for the conduct of examinations, Mr. Gafar explained that the company planned to donate 200 units of the thin client computers but that it has supplied 100 units in order to monitor their performance.

The unprecedented winning streak displayed by Unilorin debating teams in the last 35 days or so, during which they won three crucial national

debate championships in quick succession, is symptomatic of the rugged stuff of which our students are made.

Between May 5 and June 1 this year, various debating teams of the University of Ilorin came tops in three different debate competitions held across the country, making the institution proud and winning

thlaurels for themselves. These include the 4 Annual Masters' Round Debate Championship held at the University of Calabar, Cross River State, between May 5 and May 9; the FUTA IV Debate Competition held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, between May 27 and June 1; and the maiden edition of the Bounce Corruption Public Integrity Debate Competition held at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, between May 30 and June 1.

Earlier in the year, the Unilorin Debate Team had brought international honours to the University by winning the maiden Genesis Debate Tournament, an International Open tournament held between January 4 and 7, 2018 in Accra, Ghana. Another contingent also won the Tedder Hall Literacy Debate Competition, an initiative of Tedder Hall Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan.

These serial feats do not surprise consistent watchers of the organizational profile of the better by far University that has always kept faith with the social contract it has with its equally socially responsible students.

Excellence is not a fortuitous construct but the undeniable outcome of a set of deliberate activities, which include single-minded preparation and unwavering commitment to set goals. While the University management is resolute in its policy of zero disruption of the institution's academic calendar, no matter how alluring the temptation to do otherwise is, the students, on their parts, have also vowed to remain unswerving in their commitment to their academic pursuit even in the face of numerous distractions and potentially destructive peer group influences, especially from sister institutions that are notorious for shutting their doors on their students at every flimsy opportunity.

The 'Unilorin Ciceros' that won the laurels are Hawau Abikan and Omotayo Jimoh (the Bounce Corruption Public Integrity Debate Competition); Mr. A.A. Lawal, David Ejim, team coach, Justice Eyo, Omolola Ambrose, David Onyesom, Sanusi Sodiq and

thOlamide Olanrewaju (the 4 Annual Masters' Round Debate Championship); Orire Solihu, Dere Abdulhameed, Oso Olasunkanmi and Kalejaiye Musa

(FUTA IV Debate Competition); Omotayo Jimoh, Hawau Abikan, and Abolarin Muhammed (the West African Debate Championship in Ghana); as well as Adeyemo Ifedolapo and Kalejaiye Musa (Tedder Hall Literacy Debate).

The Captain of the Debate Team, Mr. Abolarin Mohammed, also emerged as the best public speaking adjudicator and the second-ranked debate adjudicator at the FUTA IV Debate Competition.

The achievements of the Unilorin debaters are indeed heart-warming, and Town & Gown congratulates every Unilorite, and especially the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, who has consistently shown, since he mounted the saddle a little over seven months ago, that he is a silent achiever. There is no doubt that this positive turn of events is a rub-off of Prof. Abdulkareem's legendary success stories everywhere he finds himself, either as a goal-getting researcher or as an astute administrator.

While formally receiving the victorious debate teams in his office last Wednesday (June 6, 2018), the Vice-Chancellor the Unilorin ambassadors for making the University proud and for keeping up with the tradition of excellence in the University.

Prof. Abdulkareem, who was also a serial winner of similar awards in his school days, encouraged the students not to relent in their academic pursuits and to strive to bring more honours to the University.

Earlier in January while receiving the winners of the Genesis Debate Tournament in Ghana and those of Tedder Hall Debate Competition in Ibadan, the Vice-Chancellor described their feats as “things of joy to all members of Team Unilorin”. He then pledged his continuous support to the institution's Quiz and Debate Committee to ensure they win more laurels at national and continental events.

The Coordinators and handlers of the brilliant debate teams must also be commended and congratulated on the wonderful achievements by their protégés. Worthy of mention in this regard are the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Tajudeen Ajibade and the Sub-Dean, Dr. Alex Akanmu, for providing the conducive environment that made it possible for the talents of the students to blossom, the University Quiz and Debate Committee led by Dr. A. A. Owoade, the former Chairman of the Committee, Dr. R.O. Arise, and the Team's Coach, Mr. David Ejim. These are veritable exemplars of the Team Unilorin initiative as envisioned by the University Governing Council Chairman, Dr. Abdullah Jibril Oyekan, and supported by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulkareem, and indeed all well-meaning Unilorites.
