This presentation will provide you with information, procedures and tips on what to do when an emergency happens on campus.

JMU EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

New posters with critical Emergency Procedures information have been developed.

Can be obtained from your building coordinator.

Can be downloaded and printed directly from the public safety web page.

You should place a copy on the back of room and office doors to help provide immediate guidance in the event of an emergency.

Please make sure you follow these basic guidelines and refer to the University's Comprehensive Safety Plan for more specific procedures.

FIRE EMERGENCY

JMU has fire alarm systems installed in all university buildings. This system is monitored 24/7 by the JMU Police Communications personnel. When a fire alarm sounds you need to evacuate the building immediately and move to a safe location away from the building.

Please follow the directions of emergency personnel.

Seek shelter inside a building until notified byUniversity officials that it is safe to leave.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS PLAN

During a campus emergency, JMU will distribute information to the campus community utilizing the following methods: Madison Alert Campus Horn and PA System JMU Web page at www.jmu.edu Blast e-mail to _______@jmu.edu accounts SMS Text Messages to registered users

In case of an emergency, JMU will use a variety of ways to communicate with the JMU community. They include; Madison Alert, AM1610, JMU web page, blast e-mails, SMS text messaging, Building Coordinators, ORL Hall Staff, Phone trees, emergency FAX notification, police loudspeakers and PA systems, JMU System Red Alert horns & local media/campus TV/Radio broadcasts.

MADISON ALERT

JMU is installing a new campus wide outdoor horn and public address system to be utilized in the event of a campus emergency called the Madison ALERT system.

Madison ALERT consists of several large horn clusters located throughout campus that can be activated by public safety officials to sound unique horn tones followed by voice instructions on how to respond to any pending emergency.

If/when this system activates, faculty/staff and students should heed any instructions given or check one of the other sources of information identified earlier for further information and specific instructions regarding the campus emergency.

Current roof top horn locations will include Burrus Hall, Showker Hall, CISAT A-1 Building and White Hall in the Village.

Madison Alert is the new campus wide public address system to be utilized in the event of a campus emergency.

The alarm will sound unique tones followed by voice instructions on how to respond to an impending emergency.

TEXT & VOICE MESSAGING

JMU now has the ability to broadcast text and voice messages to Students & Faculty/Staff during a campus emergency.

You must register in order to receive JMU Emergency Text Messages.

Faculty/Staff must sign up through the MyMadison accounts webpage.

Students must sign up through

the e-campus accounts webpage.

The JMU community can now register to receive text and voice messages over their cell phones during a campus emergency.

Faculty and staff members must sign up through the J-ESS accounts web page. Students must sign up through the e-campus accounts web page.

REPORTING EMERGENCIES

To report an emergency on-campus call the JMU PD immediately at 540-568-6911 for police, fire and medical situations. If calling from an on-campus phone, you only need dial 6911. The alternate emergency number is 540-442-6911. Use the alternate number if the primary JMU phone circuits are not working. You can dial this number from an available cell phone.

There are over 275 emergency and blue light phones located throughout campus. They are primarily found outside the main doors to buildings, in and around parking lots or pedestrian travel routes. Simply press the red button to be connected immediately to the JMU PD Communications center during an emergency.

The JMU Lightning prediction system alerts the campus when there is an imminent danger of a lightning strike on campus. You should take shelter immediately and await the all clear signal before resuming outdoor activities.

EVERYONE

MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY

DO NOT

use the elevator!

* Remain calm and assist others in safely getting out.

* Confine the fire by closing all doors and windows if

possible.

* Extinguish the fire if you have been trained and it is

safe to do so.

* Evacuate the building to a safe location

away from

the structure.

* Take any personal belongings you may need with you.

, purses, keys, cell phones, etc.)

* If circumstances permit, secure your area by closing

doors and locking them if you would normally

do so

when you leave for the day.

* Follow directions given by emergency personnel

and

respond to location designated

by your building

coordinator

outside the structure to await further

instructions

and so that everyone can be easily

counted for before leaving the area.

* Do not re-enter until authorized to do so by public

safety officials.

HOSTILE INTRUDER

* Remain calm, do not engage the intruder.

* If safely possible, try to escape the area quickly and quietly.

* If attempting to escape, do not carry phones or other objects

in your hands. As you move through open areas keep your

visible, especially if

encountering responding law enforcement officers. Follow all

the instructions officers may give you.

* If you

CANNOT SAFELY EXIT

the building, seek shelter in a

room where the doors can be locked or barricaded securely.

* Close and lock windows, lower blinds, remain out of sight, turn

off lights.

* Once secured inside, take cover behind concrete walls, thick

desks, filing cabinets, away from windows and doors.

* Remain quiet, turn off cell phone ringers.

*

ONLY ONE PERSON

from the room should

call Police at

568-6911

and tell them where you are, where the intruder

is and the condition of others with you. Follow their instructions.

If you cannot speak, leave the line open so the dispatcher can

hear what is going on.

* Assist others if they are injured.

* Do not respond to any unfamiliar voice commands until you

can be sure that they are coming from a police officer.

* Do not open the door until you can be positive that it is a police

officer or a recognized campus official coming to help you.
