  • At PPAC, Bringing Theater to Life is what we do best. For more than 83 years, this Theatre has remained a cultural and artistic gem for Providence and the State. And today it thrives by breathing life, vibrancy, and economic gain into the region, honoring the cultural tapestry of our state, and inspiring generations of people to learn, express, and become.

Our biennial Report is created to keep us connected to you and all who support the Theatre, by informing you of our achievements and progress. It is a way for you to understand our mission and how it is upheld, and is a celebration of PPACs strong commitment to the community. Some of the recent highlights of our work include:

Hosting the very first Rhode Island appearance of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the world-famous Rockettes and donating an entire performance to military service members and their families

Achieving a year-over-year increase in Annual Fund donors, raising over $350,000 each year to fully support our Community Outreach Programs

Completing significant renovation projects such as adding 38 additional ladies restrooms and installing new ADA compliant bronze doors to the entrance of the Theatre

Maintaining a strong subscriber base and single ticket sales, welcoming nearly 400,000 people into the Theatre each year, and producing more than $26 million in spending for the local community amidst a difficult economic climate

Increasing PPACs accessibility by joining the social media network where people can now get the latest Theatre news from Facebook and Twitter

Thanks to a committed Board of Trustees, effective staff, devoted volunteers, strong performance schedules, and dedicated donors, PPAC continues to successfully uphold its mission and become a stronger facet of the community. We will highlight PPACs ongoing success with community outreach, fundraising, and restoration efforts in future issues of the biennial Report to the Community. And, until then, you can find the latest Theatre news and information on our website, or by following us on Twitter and Facebook.

    Sincerely,

Joseph W. Walsh, Esq. J. L. Lynn Singleton Chairman of the Board President

  • Seats for Service MembersIn the spring of 2008, PPAC initiated a pilot program with the RI National Guard to provide free preferred seating to Rhode Island service members and their families for the Theatres Broadway, Family, and Contemporary shows. Presently, over 5,000 Rhode Island residents unselfishly dedicate themselves to protecting our country. PPAC created this program to give military families the opportunity to experience live theater first-hand, and to let them know how much their community greatly appreciates their outstanding sacrifices and courageous efforts.

If you are interested in sponsoring this program, please contact Adriane Schoen, Executive Assistant for Development, at [email protected] or (401) 574-3122.

During the 2010/11 season, PPAC, along with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring the Rockettes, donated an ENTIRE performance to military families on Veterans Day 2010. With a total of 2,500 free tickets, this event made 2010/11 the most successful season for the Seats for Service Members program to date.

  • ARTS ScholarshipsStarted in 1996, ARTS Scholarships have provided financial assistance to qualified, talented RI students who wish to attend local, summer arts education programs that further develop their abilities in a chosen area of study.

Annually, 25 scholarships are awarded to students aged 11 14. As of April 2011, the program granted $200,000 in scholarships to over 375 youngsters, affording each recipient a summer vacation filled with artistic exploration, challenge, and achievement.

Additionally, through this program, PPAC supports fellow non-profit arts organizations by paying the tuition for worthy students ($12,500 annually) to attend outstanding programs taught by professionals who are leaders in their field.

Visit us online to see the complete list of our most recent Arts Scholarships recipients.

From Books to Broadway From Books to Broadway is designed to expose middle and high school students to Broadway shows through attendance at a show combined with a cast member meet and greet.

The program brings Broadway show information into the schools in a way that emphasizes the shows educational aspects, as well as information about production values, costumes, and other production topics. Visiting cast members discuss their education, experience, and how they entered touring theatricals; in some cases, the cast members may even demonstrate some of their skills.

PPAC has received positive feedback from schools and teachers for this program. In fact, one of the teachers participating in the program received the League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. Arts Educator Apple Award - national recognition for her participation in the program.

In 2011, Ocean State Charities Trust pre-sented PPAC with the Edward Ricci Award in recognition of the outstanding community service represented by the ARTS Scholarship Program.

  • Bank of America Arts ShowcaseEach year, the Bank of America Arts Showcase enables approximately 10,000 middle-school students (ages 11 14) to come to PPAC during school hours to experience for FREE the joy and creativity of live theater. Performed on the PPAC stage by local professional performing arts groups, the Showcase is designed to entertain, educate, and inspire student audiences in new ways.

Since the programs inception in 1998, more than 100,000 RI middle school students have attended and enjoyed free live performances at PPAC. Helping to make this possible was The Big Yellow School Bus program, funded by Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. This program provided round-trip transportation for students attending the Bank of America Arts Showcase.

Also benefitting from this program are local artists from around New England who are given the unique professional opportunity to perform theater, music, or dance before a large student audience on the PPAC stage, making it a true community program.

  • Camp BroadwayThe authentic world of Broadway comes to PPAC through this one-of-a-kind program lead by a 9-member staff of New York theater professionals. Each year at Camp Broadway, 100 children ages 10-17 experience the magic of putting on a show in a professional, interactive environment.

Held each August at PPAC, the fun, intensive day camp is designed to teach the fundamentals of a Broadway production, through classes and workshops in singing, dancing, and theater arts, a behind the scenes look at PPAC, lunch with professional artists, Camp Broadway t-shirts, and a Family Finale performance all in only five short days!

Thanks to a generous grant from The Robert F. Stoico / FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, PPAC offers ten (10) Camp Broadway scholarships, which enable financially needy children who have an interest in the performing arts to attend the Camp. Previous years scholarship winners have responded enthusiastically with positive letters, thanking PPAC for providing them with the opportunity to participate in this top-quality program.

If you are interested in this program, please contact Cynthia Goldsmith, Executive Assistant/Community Outreach Coordinator, at [email protected] or (401) 574-3105.

Wonders of the WurlitzerThe Theatres 1927 Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ is one of only three of its kind left in the country. And, PPACs organ remains the only fully-functioning Wurlitzer in that group. To highlight this rare treasure, the Wurlitzer free concert series was presented for the first time in the Spring of 1988. Since then, it has

remained a regular part if the Theatres annual show schedule and has developed its own loyal, enthusiastic following.

Concerts are held from noon 1:00 p.m. in the spring and fall. All performances are free and open to the public. People of all ages come to listen, sing, and reminisce to the music performed by local organists. Silent movies, sing-alongs, vocalists, and other local performers add variety to the performances. Each year, Wonders of the Wurlitzer brings musical memories and appreciation to more than 4,000 people.

  • Founders AwardThe Providence Performing Arts Center Founders Award was created by the Board of Trustees to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation and development of the Theatre. In November 2010, PPAC honored Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario for her tremendous role in saving the Theatre from demolition in the 1970s, and for her steadfast effort in keeping PPAC alive. Without her dedicated participation over the years, Rhode Island would have lost a beautiful piece of its history. Instead, today, the Theatre stands as a flourishing, world-class performing arts center and a treasured landmark in our community.

Annual GalaEach season, hundreds of people turn out for PPACs Gala to benefit the Theatres Restoration Fund. And, 2010 was no exception as excitement peaked over two fabulous, sold-out shows JERSEY BOYS and RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR STARRING THE ROCKETTES. Each shows Gala brought together over 500 supporters from within our community for an elegant evening of entertainment and spectacular food prepared by Rhode Islands top restaurants. Combined, the Galas raised over $425,000 for recent Theatre repairs and upgrades.

  • Connecting The CommunityPPAC believes Bringing Theater to Life means being a strong Arts leader who actively connects with, supports, and promotes the broader interest of the community. The Theatre achieves that by:

executing a wide-range of low or no- cost programs to the community providing serviceable resources to local non-profits collaborating and partnering with other local arts organizations

PPAC has acted as a resource for the following local non-profits:

    Downtown Improvement District

Providence Sound Session For six years, this annual summer arts festival, organized by the Providence Black Repertory Company, held its culmination performance on PPACs stage.

    RI Film Festival

Chance to Dance For 24 years this local dance program for children in grades 4-6 has been presenting its annual recital from the PPAC stage. PPAC offers a reduced rental rate and, recently, contributes a $5000 annual donation to help offset the costs of the production.

PPAC has collaborated with the following local organizations to present valuable artistic events:

RI Philharmonic/PPAC Pops Series Since 2005, PPAC and the RI Philharmonic have co-presented performances that include: Anne Murray, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Peter Paul and Mary, Jim Brickman Christmas, Bernadette Peters, The Von Trapp Family Christmas, and Art Garfunkel among others.

FirstWorks Since 2007, PPAC and FirstWorks have co-presented performances that include: Pilobolus, East Village Opera Company, Momix, Cirque Mechanic, and The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo Yo Ma.

Festival Ballet PPAC is the home of the Festival Ballets annual production of The Nutcracker. In May 2012, the Theatre and the Festival Ballet will co-present the Ballets new production of Swan Lake.

  • Volunteer Greeter ProgramNow in its fifteenth season, PPACs Volunteer Greeter Program offers an exciting opportunity for high school students to volunteer their time at the Theatre. Greeters welcome patrons to Broadway performances, answer questions, and assist PPACs Marketing Department in implementing surveys and other promotions. Adult Greeter Coordinators, who also volunteer their time, oversee the greeters on performance night. This program provides a great opportunity for students to develop their conversation skills, increase their confidence levels, and experience live Broadway musicals!

Volunteer Usher ProgramThe PPAC volunteer usher staff is among the most dedicated group of people youll ever come in contact withand if youve attended a performance at PPAC, you have been in contact with at least one of the 300 members of that group!

Volunteer Ushers help Bring Theater to Life. Seating, directing, and assisting upward of 3,200 patrons so they can comfortably and safely enjoy the performance is no easy task. They dedicate thousands of hours each season to ensure things run smoothly at every performance.

Ushers are students, members of the community, and local business people. Many are senior citizens who have been performing this civic act continuously for more than 15 years. 27 of those people rise to the top as they have more than 25 years of continuous service to the Theatre. 14 were recognized for 10-20 years of service, and two others celebrated 31 years of service this year!

In their service to the Theatre, they have become a family. They forge relationships outside the Theatre, they mourn the loss of usher friends when one leaves, and celebrate happy milestones together. In 2011, PPAC said goodbye to House Manager Richard Coffey who retired after working at PPAC for 24 years.

IN MEMORIUMIn 2010 we sadly lost 4 long-time ushers: Betty Vagshenian, age 89 30 year usher Jeanette Carcieri, age 88 12 year usher Etta Sylvester, age 91 25 year usher Arnold Kortick, age 69 25 year usher
