Mobile Midwives UltrasoundUltrasound imaging is an eective tool or identiying

maternal mortality risk actors. Unortunately, ultrasoundis nearly absent in many rural healthcare acilities in de-

veloping regions due to the high costs o both equipmentand required training.

To leverage existing healthcare systems commonlyound in these contexts, we have ocused our eorts onincreasing the diagnostic capabilities o midwives otencentral medical fgures in rural and low-income commu-nities. We have designed and built a low-cost portableultrasound device consisting o a USB ultrasound probeand a touchscreen netbook or a total cost o around$3,500

Compared to currently available ultrasound de-vices, we simplifed the user interace while maintaining

unctionality to allow midwives to detect three commonobstetrical conditions: placenta previa, multiple gesta-tions, and breech presentation. To evaluate our solution,we tested the accuracy o ultrasound measurements, im-age quality, and whether midwives could use ultrasound.

Testing perormed by nine clinicians indicated our devicewould be appropriate or identiying the three conditions.

Our modular design approach allows or easy modi-fcation, and the device is designed to utilize existinglocal healthcare resources in order to create a sustainablesolution that does not depend on continuous oreign as-sistance.
