on behalf of the ISZL Board of trustees, I am pleased to present our Community Report which highlights the accomplishments of the school over the 2011 – 2012 academic year. this year also represents my last year of serving as Chairman of the Board. My involvement with ISZL started with the founding of the Riverside School, and throughout the more than two decades I have seen significant growth, most visibly in the number of students and dimension of our resources and facilities, but also in our reputa-tion, financial health and offerings to students in academic as well as extra-curricular activities.

our Board officially meets at least four times each year and its sub-committees on Finance, Facilities (the Building Commit-tee), Fundraising, and nominations discuss the actual situation throughout the year to ensure that our budget is favourably balanced and our facilities adequately developed, and that we engage with the life and operations of the school, as much as possible with the active participation of our community. I would like to personally thank the following Board Members for their time and commitment to our school: Dominic Currer, Director of ISZL, Val Hackel, Stefan Hasenböhler, Peter Hess, Michael Johnson, Diana Posen, Karl Reichmuth, Philipp Roeh, and Carsten thiel. I will always value our friendship which has allowed us to work together constructively. My special wishes go to Peter Hess as he takes over the position of Chair.

one of the highlights of this year was our official ground break-ing for the triple Gymnasium at the Riverside Campus. to date the new Campus has been designed, built and paid for with community funds raised largely from our corporate partners. this represents a milestone, and is a testimony to the community spirit that I have been proud to be a part of for so many years.

I look forward to remaining in contact with the school and seeing how our mission of Respect, Motivate, Achieve continues to bring out the best in our students, faculty and the entire community.

Sincerely,

Dan Urech, Chairman of the Board

I am always amazed at how quickly the year goes by! the academic year 2011 – 2012 represents a year of many accom-plishments, from early childhood to our graduating class; from sports to the arts, and in the way that our community continues to come together. earlier this year we officially broke ground on a triple Gymnasium for our Riverside Campus, our sports teams won several national and international championships, and we reviewed our music programme for Primary and Middle year students. our Middle and High school students performed in terrific theatre events, and our Grade 5 PYP exhibition was once again out-standing. In this short letter, it is impossible to highlight the many events and achievements of our school year – or do justice to the efforts of all who help make it an excellent place of learning. the purpose of our Community Report, unlike the ISZL Magazine, is to provide stakeholders with a greater connection to the school, our financial information and events that have taken place during the year.

this year ISZL has also celebrated its 50th Anniversary, as the school first opened its doors in 1961. As you can imagine, much has changed over those 50 years, and we are thankful to the many students, teachers, parents and support staff who have made all that we do possible. In mid-June all members of our community will be receiving our 50th Anniversary book which highlights the many accomplishments throughout the years. the school is looking for-ward to the next 50 years and beyond!

today over 1,300 students from over 50 nations attend the International School of Zug and Luzern, and we have a staff of over 300 from around the globe. this year we will graduate 65 students, and many of them have received scholarships to at-tend some of the top universities in the world. Approximately 40% of these students have been with us since their early years of education, and I am delighted with the sense of continuity that this provides the ISZL community. It is our aim that our students are well prepared to enter university and we hope that many of them will stay in touch with each other and our school for a lifetime.

Whether you are with us again next year or are moving on to your next adventure, thank you for your continued support and for being such an important element of the partnership at the centre of our international community.

Sincerely,

Dominic Currer, Director

each year ISZL teachers and school ad-ministrators decide on a common theme to focus on during the academic year as it relates to the curriculum. the school understands the importance of ensuring a smooth transition takes place for every child in each grade level for our inter-national students who may move from country to country during their forma-tive school years. Last year ISZL teachers came together to create a continuum of Strands and Learner outcomes to com-pliment this initiative and ensure that our curriculum provides the best resourc-es for our community.

During the 2011 – 2012 school year the academic goal was: Shifting the Assess-ment Paradigm: Creating, Collaborat-ing, Transforming.

Creatingteachers have spent the year modifying existing and creating new assessments for the units that they teach. the first step in this process revolved around each teacher creating unit overviews for the entire year that incorporated the ISZL Strands and Learner outcomes and International Bac-calaureate (IB) requirements.

next, these units were attached to as-sessments to ensure that they could de-ter mine whether students were achieving the outcomes in a timely manner. When students struggled to meet expectations, teachers created alternate plans and path-ways for them to ensure success. At the same time, if students were exceeding expectations, teachers developed differ-ent opportunities to challenge the indi-viduals to grow academically to fulfil their full potential. It was through this period that students were encouraged to express their learning and understanding through a variety of possibilities.

CollaboratingGiving teachers the time to collaborate is a key ingredient of creating meaning-ful learning experiences and assessments for students. During 2011 – 2012 ISZL en sured that there was regular divisional time including grade level meetings, team meetings, subject area meetings, as well as a variety of mid-level leadership meet-ings to focus on both the academic and pastoral aspects of student life.

Page 6: Community report 2011 12

During this initiative teachers engaged in structured conversations about student work that allowed them time to explore nuances of student expression of learning and establish common norms and expec-tations for success. on Wednesdays of each month, curriculum coordinators led after school meetings devoted to particu-lar aspects of assessment either from a general perspective or an IB specific point of view.

TransformingIn IB World Schools that also run AP cours-es, like ISZL, there can sometimes be a temptation to solely rely upon the assess-ment structures the progammes provide rather than making them fit the specific needs of our student population.

there can also be an over-reliance on merely using the measures provided by the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP) and Advanced Place-ment (AP) thattend to be exit assessments

like the exhibition (PYP), Personal Project (MYP), and external exams (DP and AP).

Basically, in educational jargon, these are called summative assessments. However, research shows that summative assess-ments merely provide teachers and stu-dents with information after the learning opportunities are over when it is too late to mediate or make improvements. Con-versely, formative assessment happens during the learning experiences, where teachers and students gather on-going information about learning that then guides them to improve the learning ex-periences as they ensure better results for all.

In the 2011 – 2012 academic year ISZL has focused on providing better-crafted, responsive, and formative assessments for students. In return, this has trans-formed the culture of learning to one that is more dynamic and supportive of stu-dents.

Exam Results at the High Schoolnineteen ISZL students took IB examina-tions last summer. thirteen students sat for the full IB Diploma and achieved ex-cellent exam results. the school’s average scores exceeded the worldwide averages in all of the subjects offered at ISZL. Point scores ranged from 25 to 43 out of a pos-sible 45 and ISZL’s average point score was 34.4 compared with the worldwide average of 29.59.

In the summer of 2011, ninety-five ISZL stu dents took Advanced Placement cour s - es in 21 different subjects. We currently have forty-six eleventh graders and thir-ty-four twelfth graders pursuing these independently structured exams.

During the 2010 – 2011 school year our students sat a total of two hundred eleven AP exams and 19% achieved the maxi-mum score of 5. overall, our students achieved scores of 3 or higher on 76% of their exams. these results allowed for a smooth and successful transition for our students to the university setting.

Academic Goal for 2012 – 2013In an on-going pursuit of continuous school improvement at ISZL, the school wide goal for academics has already been set for 2012 – 2013. All of our planning and teacher professional development will focus on: Differentiation of In-struction, Learning and Assessment.

this goal will ensure that we successfully incorporate the work of the past two years which first focused on creating our school wide structure of Strands and Learner outcomes and then on assessing those learner outcomes in both formative and summative ways. Differentiation will further enhance our focus on the needs of individual students and better guide them to success during their academic experiences at ISZL.

Anniversary BookIn June 2012, ISZL will release its 50th Anniversary Book, which is made up of over 160 pages and 200 images high-lighting ISZL’s journey since 1961 when it first opened its doors with just fourteen students. the Zug American School, as it was known, was supported primarily by Willys overland Motors, a company that produced Jeeps during and after World War II.

over the course of 50 years, the school has been renamed, expanded and relo-cated many times. However, it has not wavered in its enthusiastic commitment to offer the highest educational stand-ards to the expatriate children in the local community. througout the years the various owners and directors have shared a common vision of providing excellence in education to the global leaders of tomorrow.

this anniversary book, given to all com-munity members, reflects the commit-ment of the school over the years and will be treasured by the many individuals who make up ISZL yesterday, today and tomorrow.

International Thanksgiving 2011on 5th november 2011 over 800 members of our commu-nity gathered at the Zug Campus to celebrate the school’s 50th Anniversary. It was a typical north American thanksgiving dinner, complete with turkey and mashed potatoes, which were provided by the school. Families brought traditional food from their coun-tries in order to make the meal a truly splendid international feast.

As it was also the same weekend as the British celebration of Guy Fawkes, attendees made “guys” that were later burned on a bon-fire followed by an impressive display of fireworks. thank you also goes to the Parents’ Association for providing beverages for the celebration. Due to the overwhelming success of the event, plans are already underway for another International thanksgiving in november 2012.

the 2011 – 2012 school year was an exciting one for the ISZL eagles!

In addition to the various matches against regional international schools, ISZL is a member of the Swiss Group of Interna-tional Schools (SGIS) and has an associ-ate membership with the Sports Council of International Schools (SCIS). With both organisations ISZL competes in the following sports: badminton, basket-ball, cross country, football (soccer), golf, rugby, skiing, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and unihockey.

the school encourages participation in physical activities whether it is for fit-ness or competition. this is evident not only through the Physical education classes that students are required to take, but also through the formation of the newly created medley sports club at the High School which allows students to practice leisure sports like tennis and cycling on a weekly basis.

In 2011 – 2012 ISZL saw an increase in the number of students participating in the athletic programme, as well as a record number of games and tournaments won. the ski team won all three tourna-ments, for the first time our swim team took home a record at a SGIS swimming tournament, our football teams placed in the top of their divisions, and six re-cords were set at the SGIS track and Field tournament hosted by our school in April 2012.

When traveling to compete in tourna-ments, our students stay with local families. At ISZL over 250 students from other schools were hosted by our community. often the students stay in touch and form friendships that last a lifetime.

our students involved in rugby and swim-ming were fortunate to receive additional training at world class facilities through international workshops and camps in Portugal and Italy. ISZL coaches also had international professional development opportunities which addressed specific needs of coaching at international schools. the Athletics Department also under-stands the importance of creating rela-tionships with local sport clubs and our football teams will again participate in the cantonal championships next year.

With the opening of the triple Gymnasism in 2013, the eagles are bound to have a successful future in athletics for years to come.

Some accomplishments of our students in the arts during 2011 – 2012

• Primary students participated in perfor-mances such as the Festival of Lights and the Primary School Musical, “the First Kids in Space”.

• Zug Campus art students designed and constructed the set for the Grade 8 production of “Guys and Dolls”, and High School students had a successful run of the comedy “39 Steps”.

• the Zug Campus Choir performed at the SGIS conference hosted at the Zug Campus and travelled to Vienna in May for their first international Choir tour.

• Students studied art in international art capitals such as Paris and new York City.

• Music students spent time rehearsing and studying with the Luzern Symphony orchestra and plans are underway to continue to develop this relationship among professional performers and students.

• A gallery of student’s art work was on view throughout the year in the Middle School.

• ISZL collaborated with the Kantonsspi-tal and the School of Design in Basel to create a photography exhibition that is now a part of the Canton’s permanent art collection.

ISZL understands the importance the arts play in a student’s daily life, and the school has made a renewed commitment of integrating the arts programme into the curriculum on all three campuses. In 2011 – 2012 the arts programme added

additional full and part-time positions to focus on both instrumental lessons and drama, and our visual art students pre-sented a variety of exhibitions at school and within the region. During the year there were a series of music performances and art openings showcasing the talents of our many students.

our students also spent time at school in open studio days on Saturdays through-out the year, and travelled to Chalet Bergheim for intensive rehearsals for both string and wind ensembles and to sketch the beautiful natural surroundings.

After graduation, our students continue to study art, and all graduating Grade 12 students applying to art school this year received acceptances to the college of their choice. ISZL will continue to create and inspire art among our students, and in 2012 – 2013 the school will have an artist in residence programme, where stu-dents in all grades will be able to collabo-rate on projects and learn directly what it takes to be a professional artist in today’s international art arena.

8th GRADE STUDENTS TRAVEL TO BULGARIA TO WORK WITH THE CEDAR FOUNDATION, AN ISZL SCHOOL WIDE SUPPORTED CHARITY

the Cedar Foundation is a charity that focuses on improving the lives of children in orphanages across Bulgaria while supporting the local and national government to help build and operate daycare and rehabilitation centres and homes for disadvantaged children in the country.

over the past year, a group of 14 Middle School students formed a Cedar Foundation group as part of their service learning programme which in total raised over CHF 6,000 towards the building of a new playground at one of the Cedar Foundation facilities. the group raised this amount by selling hot chocolate during one of coldest weeks in February, producing and selling greeting cards, and collecting euro and Swiss coins which were used to form a Cedar Foundation logo on the Piazza in March.

In April 2012, nine of the original Grade 8 Cedar Foundation group members travelled to Bulgaria to see for themselves the area where the playground would be built and to work closely with the residents of the small group of homes at the local orphanage in Kystendil. For many of our students, it was the first time that they had travelled abroad to work directly with a charity, and many were unsure of what to expext.

over the two days of working with the Foundation, ISZL students worked closely with young adults from the group homes in sup-porting baking and craft activities, taking them shopping to local supermarkets, as well as playing games and walking in the woods in and arround the city of Kyustendil. the visits were eye-opening and gave our students an insight on how life can be for children and young adults who are not as fortunate as themselves. ISZL students on the trip were touched by what they had seen and have memories that will last them a lifetime.

A special thanks to Grade 8 teacher Stuart Byfield for leading the group of students and for all that he does for our community and the Cedar Foundation.

Community Service is a key part of the ISZL curriculum and during the year our students engage in numerous fund-raising and volunteer initiatives both locally and internationally. ISZL’s goal is to create authentic educational experiences for students that will complement real concepts taught in the classroom.

When possible ISZL students will visit these charities and conduct on site volunteer work to see how their fund-raising efforts make a difference. Student led fundraisers are held at school to teach students the importance of giving back. Many of our students realize how a little bit can go a long way.

During the 2011 – 2012 academic year, the Admissions office successfully in-tegrated 220 new students into our community. ISZL continues to be the school of choice in Central Switzerland with con tinued high demand reflected in waiting lists across all grades.

this past year the school has had a very low attrition rate of 12%, significantly lower than the international school aver-age worldwide. this stability is further enhanced by an increase in the average stay of students which is currently 3.8 years.

Looking at the academic year 2012 – 2013 the enrolment numbers at the school will remain steady. Student num-bers at the Zug Campus will remain unchanged; there will be a slight increase in student numbers at the High School (reflecting the large Grade 8 cohort moving into Grade 9), and there will be a healthy increase of students at the Luzern Campus as it continues to grow.

Since 2009, the Fund for excellence (FFe) has been ISZL’s primary fundraising initia-tive. ISZL is a non-profit school and FFe allows the school to purchase extra items out-side of the annual operating budget which is financed by tuition and fees. each year the Leader ship team creates a Wish List around a particular theme and items from the list are purchased immediately once enough funds are raised. this year’s FFe theme was Learn-ing Beyond the Classroom. the school believes that every student should experience the world beyond the classroom as it is an essential part of learning and personal develop-ment.

thanks to the generosity of many and to special events like the Gala and Golf tour-nament, CHF 194,000 was raised for our students from the 2011 – 2012 Fund for excellence. Some of the items purchased include:

• Camping equimpent

• early childhood play equipment

• GPS systems for hikes in the Swiss Alps and beyond

• Greenhouse for the newly formed Garden Club

• iPads to be used for outdoor learning tools and field based science experiments

• Lazer sailboats and river kayaks

the ISZL Parents’ Association (PA), is an orga nisation that is committed to promo-ting an active partnership among parents, students, faculty and administration. Its main goal is to support the school in pro-viding the best possible education and social environment for our students and the school community. each month the PA sends out an electronic newsletter to all community members. this newsletter contains information about events as well as advertisements from parents (personal ads) and local businesses.

A special thank you to all Class Parents, Grade Level and Country Representatives for your countless assistance through-out the year. Your support in bringing our community together through coffee mornings, lunches and dinners and the coordination of special events and pro-grammes in and outside of the classroom is greatly appreciated by all. events and activities organised by the PA include the following and are not limited to:

Welcome Fair and Coffee MorningsIn August 2011, the PA hosted its annual Welcome Fair, a chance for local businesses and organisations to pro-mote their services to new and returning families. the event also gives parents the opportunity to sign up for PA supported Clubs and discuss volunteer opportuni-ties available throughout the year. the PA coffee mornings provide an informal setting for interaction among parents to discuss their experiences at the school, in Switzerland, and beyond.

Trunk or TreatA favourite among students and parents on the Zug and Luzern Campuses, over 60 cars were decorated in Halloween themed decor, and students had the opportunity to collect treats from participating fami-lies.

Craft Fair and Festive ShopA Craft Fair was organised prior to the winter holidays, where local artisans from across the region gave ISZL families the opportunity to purchase hand made items to take home to their families. Meanwhile, ISZL students had he chance to shop at the Festive Shop, giving children the chance to purchase items for their families.

Wine Tastings and Quiz NightA fun evening out for ISZL parents, the PA organised a Wine tasting and Quiz night, both events allowed ISZL parents the op-portunity to socialize with other parents, as well as staff members.

Riverside’s Got TalentA yearly tradition held at the High School, this event showcases the many talents of our students through a variety of per-formances. Like the popular television show, “celebrities” (our staff and parents) provide positive feedback to all par-ticipants. At the end of the show all performers receive prizes.

International DayConsidered to be the event of the year by the ISZL community, this annual event has been going on for over 25 years and showcases our international community through a day of food, music, and activi-ties for children of all ages. Funds raised from the day are given to the school to assist with a variety of programmes and also to a local charity.

In 2009 ISZL embarked upon an initia-tive to build a new High School due to the fact that the previous facility had reached capacity and did not meet the needs of a 21st century education. Since ISZL is a non-profit school, and tuition covers the annual operating budget, the school be-gan a Capital Campaign initiative to raise funds from individuals and corporations to help finance the project. In August 2010, the new High School building opened with 350 students, and later in the year, adjacent to the classroom building, a Sports Field was constructed.

the final stage of the project became a reality when on 28th november 2011 ISZL broke ground for its triple Gymna-sium which will complete the High School Campus in Hünenberg. It is expected that the new facility will be open in spring 2013 and once fundraising efforts are completed, ISZL will have sole owner-ship of all facilities located on the High School Campus – a major milestone in the school’s history, as it represents ISZL’s vision of having a state-of-the-art facility for our international community located directly on the premises of our school.

What the community can expect from the new Triple Gym

• over 1,300 square meters of floor space will be available with special space dedicated to dance and fitness. Games and tournaments can take place simultaneously.

• ISZL will be able to host international sports tournaments – the first one being held in May 2013.

• overlooking the court area will be a café for community use to sell refreshments at sporting events.

• Students will have sports facilities directly on campus and will not have to travel distances for practices, which in return will save time and give students more opportunities for training.

• the facility will enhance the athletic programme and add a greater sense of community spirit among all stakeholders. • Amgen (europe) GmbH
