Osmosis in Plant Cells

• In a weak solution, water will enter the cell and fill the vacuole. The cell membrane will push against the cell wall making the cell very rigid and inflexible. The cells in this state are turgid.

• In a concentrated solution, the cell loses water and goes flaccid because the vacuole becomes flaccid and the cytoplasm stops pushing against the cell wall. This state is plasmolysis.

SOLUTIONS

• Hypertonic = Concentrated (more solute less water)

• Isotonic = Same Concentration

• Hypotonic = Dilute (less solute more water)
