IMPI’s50th Annual Microwave Power Symposium (IMPI 50)

The SymposiumJoin us and be part of the IMPI 50 experience: where knowledge is shared, networking is prolific, and the pro-gram offers topics for everyone interested in learning about the latest developments in microwave power science and technology. Each year, IMPI brings together researchers, technologists and engineers from across the globe to share the latest findings on microwave and radio frequency power systems for non-communication applica-tions, including food technology, medical applications, chemical and material processing, and new emerging technologies.

Venue & AccomodationsIMPI 50 will be held at the beautiful Caribe Royale All-Suite Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, USA. Situated on 53 lush, tropical acres, this resort property offers luxurious one-bedroom suites, on site dining options, an expansive pool and fitness room as well as a spa and other amenities. The property is located less than 1.5 miles from Walt Disney World.

IMPI has secured a special group rate of $149 per night, for a one bedroom suite, which includes complimentary in-suite internet access. Reservations must be made by May 20th by calling: 1-888-258-7501 and asking for the IMPI Symposium rate or by clicking here.

Special EventsThere are several optional special events that registrants can add on during the registration process:

This course will examine the fundamental principles of microwave heating including microwave heating and microwave oven fundamentals, microwavable foods and packaging. Attendees will leave the course with a better knowledge of:

• What are microwave ovens? • What are their properties? • How do they interact with materials?

The course will also discuss requirements and methods for developing microwavable food products, and packaging and how they can be integrated into product development.

The course reviews major issues and challenges in the development of processes and systems in microwave thermal processing of materials and shows how these difficulties could be addressed (as well as what problems could be resolved) with the use of computer modeling. Technical aspects of microwave heating and related physical phenomena are discussed in the context of their mathematical characterization; corresponding numerical techniques are briefly overviewed. Options provided by modern computer tools for multiphysics simulation are considered. Computational strategies of modeling and CAD of systems and processes are discussed and illustrated by examples of successful applied projects. Special attention is paid to scenarios with solid-state generation of microwave energy. The course is concluded by live demonstrations of functionality of QuickWave-3D, the modeling software with advanced capabilities in simulation of microwave thermal processing.

IMPI’s50th Annual Microwave Power Symposium (IMPI 50) Keynote Speakers

Dr. Augustine Y. CheungPresident & CEO, Medifocus Inc.

Keynote Lecture: The Use of Microwave Power for Treatment of Cancer

The therapeutic potential of heat has long been recognized. However, the inability to focus heat precisely at disease sites on a reliable and repeatable basis had hampered the development of heat energy as a therapeutic modality. Now, however, a number of unique microwave heating modalities are being used for the treatment of various forms of cancer and other medical issues. These modalities include: Focused Heat Thermotherapy; “Prolieve” Thermo-dilatation Treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia; Breast Cancer Treatment; Heat Activated Drug/Gene Therapy; Liposomal Drug Encapsulation; Heat Activated Adenovirus Gene Delivery Construct for various Molecular and Immuno-therapeutics. All these targeted microwave techniques are at the forefront of the war on cancer.

James K. Pool IIIPresident, TurboChef Technologies, Inc.

Keynote Address: Evolution & Revolution of Microwave Technology in the Commercial Kitchen

The once simple box that was viewed as the next great kitchen invention has now come into its own some 65 years later. It’s taken the collective might of the food technologist, food manufacturers, appliance manufacturers, and ultimately the consumer to bring the microwave oven into acceptance. The microwave oven has traveled a long torturous path, but with all great evolutions comes revolution. Food service has challenged microwave ovens beyond consumer needs, and this has led to continuing innovations in this broad and growing market.
