O How we assessed the identified need
O The need was identified whilst looking at the needs of another populations
O As discussed before, our original intent was a suicide prevention program with 18-25 year olds
O We took what we had learned from researching this population and narrowed it down to 17-18 year old high school seniors at Crook County High School
O Who we contacted
O Initially we contacted NAMI, St. Charles, Deschutes County Prevention and Behavioral Health, and Lutheran Community Services in Prineville. When the project population changed, Mary did further research in Crook County to get a more accurate of current resourcesO Lutheran Community Services

O An initial assessment of the population brought to light a
number of health issues that are common to 17 – 18 year old
HS seniors:
O Risk taking behavior
O Drug and alcohol use/abuse/overdose
O Motor vehicle crashes
O (Leading cause of death for 10 – 24 year olds in
Oregon)
O Violence
O Suicide
O Second leading cause of death for 10-24 year olds in
Oregon
O Mental Health Concerns
O Many serious illness appear during late adolescence
and early adulthood (schizophrenia, bipolar with
psychosis, eating disorders and major depressive
disorder to name a few.)
O Sexually Transmitted Diseases
O Initial assessments also brought to light a number of barriers and obstacles that adolescent’s face that impact their utilization
of community resources:
O Developmental concerns
O Low awareness of risk and they may not think they have a problem.
O Stigma
O How does stigma impact an adolescents ability to utilize services?
O Mental health literacy
O How much do HS Seniors at CCHS know about mental health and suicide prevention
O How much do parents know about mental health and suicide prevention?
O Access to health care and insurance
O Knowledge of, and access to, crisis intervention
O Are students knowledgeable about crisis resources in their communities?
O Do students know the signs and symptoms of mental illness?
O Do students know how to intervene in a suicide?
O The community assessment did turn up some resources in Crook
County for 17 – 18 year old HS Seniors who are going through
mental health issues and may be suicidal:
O Lutheran Community Services
O Adolescent assessment, counseling, and medication
management
O Community Outreach on mental health and suicide
prevention
O Rimrock Trails Adolescent Treatment Facility
O In-patient and outpatient addictions treatment for
adolescents ages 12-17
O Crook County Health Department
O Educational Programs
O Community Outreach on mental health and suicide
prevention
O The Landing: Youth Tutoring Center
O Homework mentoring outside of school hours
O Safe Environment
O Free Meals
O Healthy Activities outside of school hours
O Suicide Prevention Educational Class
O Class will run from the beginning of the school year until the end of the school year; 2015 – 2016 school year.
O Classes will be held once a month on Monday evenings between 7pm and 8:30pm.
O Class will be held in the CCHS Auditorium which has video and presentation equipment and more than enough room to accommodate a large audience.
O Class is geared specifically towards HS Seniors, and their support network.
O Their parents
O School leaders (counselors and teachers)
O Community leaders in adolescent mental health
O The class will open with a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to
stimulate conversation

Prineville:
O Pamphlets will be readily available at Crook County High
School for students; front office, counselor’s offices, and
administrative offices.

front reception and directly from PCPs
O Pamphlets will be readily available at youth community
activities such as the Boys and Girls Club.
O Pamphlets will be readily available to the many different
clubs and organizations within the High School itself
O Posters will be placed at numerous locations around Prineville:
O Posters will be placed throughout Crook County High School
for all students to see.
O Posters will be placed at Lutheran Community Services
O Posters will placed at St. Charles in rooms and bathrooms
O Posters will placed at Mosaic Medical in rooms and
bathrooms
O Posters will be placed at youth community clubs and activity
centers such as the Boys and Girls Club.
O Posters will be placed at public places through Prineville to
promote the class to the surrounding community.
O Crook County High School and the Crook County
School District send out a monthly letter to parents. This
presents another outreach venue to promote the
program
O The newsletters list upcoming events
O Social media is also a powerful method of reaching out
to students, parents, potential partners, and community
stakeholders.
O Crook County High School and the School District both
have web site as well as Facebook pages where they post
upcoming events.
O One of the learning method that this educational program
will utilize is the Popular Education model with CHW as
facilitators
O CHW’s will begin the initial discussion through a brief
presentation and then engage the audience to talk about
the problem in their community; how it has impacted them,
their families, their community.
O The use of this model takes into account a variety of
education levels; personal experience and linking that
personal experience with others creates an atmosphere
where everyone teaches and everyone learns. It is based
on life experience.
O The use of this model is meant to build grassroots
leadership from within the community. It has the power to
moves people towards a place of action through
empowerment.
O Another learning method that will be utilized is
Motivational Interviewing.
O When engaging the community, it is essential to be
collaborative, to be evocative, and to honor the
participants autonomy.
O The guiding principles of RULE go well with the
Popular Education Model discussed previously:
