Quick Writes will not be grade for points but for participation and honesty.

1. You are allowed to use your brain, any notes, labs or worksheets we have done in class.

2. You may not use your textbook or interactive reader.

3. You will have 8 minutes to complete as many questions as possible.

4. With a colored pencil, you will grade your own.

You have been offered an opportunity to complete extra credit.

It is never mandatory to complete but please remember at the end of the quarter, I:

1) Do not round your % grade

2) Do not offer extra credit projects to raise your grade.

Units Incremental amounts used for measuring size, distance, mass, etc.

In Science you must always LABEL your numbers with the UNITS you are using.

Length meter m

Mass gram g

Volume liter, cubic unit L or u3

Temp Celsius, Kelvin C , K

Amount of Substance Mole mol in Solution

Time Second s

Luminous Intensity candela cd(brightness)

Measurement & Data

In order to communicate effectively scientists around the world need to speak the same math language. This is the acceptable measurement system in chemistry. This system is known as SI, short for the French term “Systeme Interantional d’unites”. This system is the metric system and works in multiple of 10.

Are added to the base unit (gram, meter, liter) CHANGE THE SIZE of the base measurement

Is called ABSOLUTE ZERO. This is the temperature at which particles would actually stop moving. A type of matter known as BOSE EINSTEIN CONDENSATES or BEC’s, have been cooled to this state.

Kelvin and Celsius are the temperature units we will use in chemistry. To convert Celsius to Kelvin you just ADD 274.15 to whatever Celsius temperature you measure.

Concerned with measurements which analyze amounts (quantities) of matter.

There is no such thing as a “perfect” measurement. This is due to the accuracy and precision of the person making the measurements

Quantitative Science

Limitations always exist in science

Page 10: Power Notes Mmeasurements and Dealing with Data + Quickwrite. day 2

A measurement that is CORRECT

A measurement that is the same every time it is taken; precise measurements can be reproduced but is not exact.

significant figures is the number of digits believed to be correct by the person doing the measuring. We will round to the nearest 100th this year.

Accuracy

TOOL Used to Measure Unit Label

Graduated Cylinder volume mL

Beaker volume mL

Analysis of Data -We will be using computer models, charts and

-Graphs

Page 12: Power Notes Mmeasurements and Dealing with Data + Quickwrite. day 2

A factor in an experiment that can be tested or changed to affect the outcome of the experiment

Variable

Page 13: Power Notes Mmeasurements and Dealing with Data + Quickwrite. day 2

The factor the experimenter decides to change or controls; the cause of something; input

The factor that changes because of the independent variable; effect; output

Independent Variable

Dependent Variable

X axisIndependent variable

Y axisDependent variable

Label your graph outline:

Page 14: Power Notes Mmeasurements and Dealing with Data + Quickwrite. day 2

= both change in the same direction; produces a graph with an upward trend

eg: a time increases the distance of the car travels also increases

Identifying Patterns:

DIRECT relationship between variables

Indirect or Inverse relationship between variables

=one variable increases while the other decreases; produces a graph with a downward trend

eg: as the pressure increases the size of the balloon decreased

Review

1. Answer Question #1-152. Please just give the

answers….NO COMPLETE SENTENCES

3. REVIEW & REFLECT (+, , -) on all notes taken.
