OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY The 10th Anniversary Central Asian International Exhibition and Forum for Environmental Technologies, Waste Management, Industrial Water Treatment and “Green” Innovations EcoTech 2014 was successfully held on September 17–19, 2014 in the City of Almaty. This year the Exhibition was visited by the leading industry experts including the Director of Waste Product Division of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Beybut Shakhanov; the Deputy Director of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Department of the City of Almaty Erkebulan Orazalin; the Head of Waste Management Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Astana City Administration (Akimat) Miras Gaysin; the Head of Ecological Information Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the City of Almaty Naziya Aukhinova; the Director of the Centre “Sustainable Development of Kazakhstan”, the Executive Supervisor of “KazWaste” Association of Waste Management of the Republic of Kazakhstan Vera Mustafina; the Executive Supervisor of “KAPUR” Association of Natural Use for Sustainable Development Galina Artyukhina and many others.

EXHIBITION It is to be recalled that about 30 companies from Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Finland took part in the exhibition. The main objectives stated by the EcoTech 2014 exhibitioners were the following: the raising of awareness about their companies and meeting new clients. Have the objectives been attained? The participants’ comments are self-explanatory:



Georgiy Tyukavin, Project Manager, ARCON Company: - We have participated in EcoTech more than once and this year has been marked with very interesting innovations and achievements. Firstly, general and ecological themes have risen to a new level, even in comparison with the previous year. The number of applications and interest has increased and quality has increased at that, not just quantity. I believe also that the Exhibition has benefited from association with other areas, because even within our Company we work and represent completely different manufacturers of equipment in areas, such as mining, environmental and energy. And such association has played for us advantageously, having increased the efficiency of our work and, hopefully, the result.

Adam Skorut, the Chairman of the Board, “Skorut”: “We came from Poland. The production of solar energy collectors is a business line of the company we represent. There are many exhibition participants taking an interest in our output, and we hope they will become our consumers at some future day”.

Manas Naurzbayevich Sagitov, Regional Manager, "Kazgeobel-1" Company: -The focus of our company is directed on environmentally safe geosynthetic materials, which are used, in particular, in road construction, as well as in the construction of landfills for solid waste, gas complexes and sludge storages. The Exhibition meets our profile, exactly what we need; there is a company, which builds a landfill for solid waste and so on, and we provide them with geomembrane. We rate our participation as 5+; we have been approached by many people from eco-friendly companies. Tengizchevroil LLP, for instance, was interested in our material, as it is preoccupied with the ecologically safe recycling of its waste. EcoTech helps us; we have already new ties with companies. It has been a very productive Exhibition.

4. What are the results of your participation in the Exhibition?


Within the business program of the Exhibition, on September 17 Best Western Plus Atakent Park Hotel hosted the International Conference “Development of infrastructure for waste disposal in Kazakhstan”, which attracted more than 150 interested professionals and industry experts. A seminar of CPI LLP “Gidromet Ltd.” (Kazakhstan) was also held on the topic “Modern equipment for gas monitoring in accordance with EU standards”. The presentation was made by Andris Leitas, Consultant of Opsis AB.

BUSINESS PROGRAMME



On the behalf of event organizers, conference participants were welcomed by the plenary session moderator – Galina Artyukhina – the executive director of KAPUR. In her greeting, Ms. Artyukhina mentioned that “Today’s event is extremely important for the Republic of Kazakhstan in terms of these concepts and national tasks that are given to Kazakhstan in order to implement the strategy of becoming one of the thirty most developed countries in the world.” Beybut Shakhanov – director of the waste product division of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in his opening address reminded conference participants that the Ministry of Energy currently combines several ministries, including the former Ministry of Environment and Water Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and read off a greeting on the behalf of the Minster of Energy Mr. Shkolnik. The letter stated that after carrying out some great preparatory work, the ministry began developing “Its own integrated system of waste collection and utilization. There will be a system directed at reducing waste generation. For that purpose, there is an updating program for control systems of household solid wastes from 2014-2050. On the behalf of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, I hail the decision of exhibition organizers in regards to holding a forum on the relevant issue of developing an infrastructure for waste utilization

On behalf of the City of Almaty, which has been arranging the exhibition and “EcoTech” conference for 10 years, Erkebulan Orazalin, the Deputy Director of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Department of the City of Almaty appeared with an opening address. In the official part of his speech, Mr Orazalin read a greeting letter on behalf of the Mayor of Almaty – Mr Esimov, and briefly informed about today’s measures in the sphere of the organization of separate collection and management of waste in the city of Almaty.

CONFERENCE EcoTech 2014



Taking into consideration the limitedness of the infrastructure for processing waste and recyclable market in Kazakhstan, the speaker stressed that “TengizChevrOil continues to improve the management of waste and maintains its strategy to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste to reduce the amount of waste disposed”. He talked also about TengizEcoCenter (TEC) organized by TengizChevrOil, “which is located on the territory of Tengiz and is a modern multi-functional object and an integrated complex, comprising two landfill for the disposal of domestic and industrial waste, waste storage sites, equipment for primary processing of concrete and plastic waste, sterilization of medical waste that allows centralizing all works on waste management. Landfills built on the present object are equipped with double geomembrane cover, meeting the highest quality standards required for waste disposal. To increase the size of recycling of household waste TengizChevrOil plans in 2015 to start operation of a sorting line at TengizEcoCenter to separate recyclable materials (paper, plastic, cardboard, scrap metal, scrap wood, glass)”.

As a good example of Kazakhstan’s major industrial facilities, when small and medium-sized business can develop waste recycling, is in a report by “LLP “Tengizchevroil”: Waste Management”, which was made by Arman Sadirbaev, the deputy of general manager of the Operation Excellence Department / Health, Safety and Environment of LLP “Tengizchevroil”.




The second session presented the results of a joint project of UNDP, the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Samsung Electronics Central Eurasia – “Management of electronic waste”, as well as the practical experience of public-private partnership on the example of companies Samsung Electronics Central Eurasia, Alser and Sulpak; international experts made statements.




The final session was begun with the report of Mr. Shakhanov, Director of the waste department of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It reflects the main problems of developing the SHW sector, projects in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme based on management of production and commercial operations in Kazakhstan and medical waste, import, export and transit of hazardous waste, expected results of activities of the Center JSC “Zhasyl Damu”, increase of SHW generation in the cities of Kazakhstan, an analysis of the acting legal basis in the area of waste management in the Republic of Kazakhstan, plans and results for 2015. As it was mentioned in the report “Operations on Solid Household Waste Management will be performed in accordance with the event plan of the modernization program of the solid household waste management system for 2014-2020.”

The participants of the Conference noted that in order to create opportunities for the development of the market of production and consumption waste recycling in accordance with the best international approaches, first of all, it was necessary to improve national legislation. In this regard, in the course of the discussion, proposals were offered, which were reflected in the Resolution of the Conference that was sent to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan and took into work with subordinate ministries.
