The Dignitaries for the event were Shri S. M. The Congress Kick started with an inspiring Welcome Address by Smt. Vartika Shukla, Executive Director (Technical), EIL. Special Address was given by the Conference Chairman- Shri S.M. Vaidya, Executive Director (Operational), IOCL. He explained about digitalization and also discussed about the current market conditions of India and the globe in reference to power, fuel and petrochemicals sector. He told that to overcome the challenges faces by the industry, it is important to improve our efficiency & productivity for which Downstream 4.0 is the only solution. Theme Address by Shri Gaurav Moda, Managing Director, Resources, Accenture. He appreciated the downstream industry for having done the great job. Further, he talked about the 5 majors of the industry and how downstream 4.0 can help in that. Inaugural Address by Shri P. Raghavendran, President (Refinery Business), Reliance Industry Limited. He discussed about the environmental problem being faced by the Industry. The opening leadership panel discussion focused on Downstream Market Outlook. Mr. Amit Khera, Partner & Lead, Oil & Gas India, McKinsey & Company Inc. was the Moderator. Mr. S. Rath, Member (I&T), PNGRB spoke about India moving towards Gas based economy. He asked people to use gas in place of expensive liquid fuels and also urged them to actively be a part of the changes in the downstream market; Mr. P. Raghavendran, President (Refinery Business), Reliance Industry Limited discussed about global demands being critical in oil sector but there are spot opportunities in high growth market. Huge transportation cost for oil & gas affects the economy. He told that energy conservation area is significant for controlling problems like global warming and other environmental issues and the chemical growth wave is right now on its initial stage; Mr. Janardhanan Ramanujalu, Vice President, Regional Head- South Asia & Australia, SABIC informed about the petrochemicals industry being agile. It is going to grow in the long term despite the plastic ban and recycling. Chemicals play a huge role even in delivering the role in future; Mr. Bharat Goenka, Director (Strategic Customers), Shell Catalyst & Technologies spoke about the two components of downstream namely motor fuels and petrochemicals. He stated that there will be an increase in demand of fossil fuels by 2030 in Asia due to increase in the number of cars and motor vehicles. According to him, the growing population is the biggest opportunity for the petrochemicals industry alongside the challenge of reducing global warming.

Technical Session I with the theme Downstream 4.0- Smart Manufacturing & Digital Transformation was chaired by Dr. Sanjeev S Katti, Ph.D., M.B.A, Director General, ONGC Energy Center. The speakers were Mr. Harikrishnan Shankaranarayanan, Managing Director, Resources, Accenture who informed about 'Realising Digital Dividends'. He spoke about the improvement of Efficiency & effectiveness. Manufacturing Operation management 1.0 means getting right thing on the right time to the right person. He suggested to become energy efficient in order to reduce carbon footprints. Safety incidents are likely to happen in order to avoid any mis happening. Mr. T.S. Park, Head of Optimism, Aveva Information Technology spoke on 'Digital Value Chain Optimization'. Refinery means producing Gasoline division. But in future, it will be the plan to produce the feedstock for the petrochemicals. It will be a big shift in the near future. He told that optimization of technology is the way of survival in the industry. The way of doing the business is changed by optimizing the digital value chain. Mr. Akshay Gupta, Business Development Manager- Connected Performance Services, Honeywell UOP deliberated on 'Leveraging IIoT to drive Operational Excellence & Profitability in Refining & Petrochemicals Industry'. He bought forth example of dashboard system processes which have benefitted companies to the tune of upto 500 million dollars per annum each. With such integration in planning, scheduling, operations, maintenance, asset management, marketing, these all can work in an integrated model in both for the operator as well as the decision maker. Example of supply chain management system putting smart implementation processes into broader projects itself would bring an end to end solutions for the projects to come by.
Smt. Vartika Shukla, Executive Director (Technical), Engineers India Limited chaired the Technical Session II in which New Pathways of Refinery & Petrochemicals Integration were discussed. The Speaker Mr. Rajesh Samarth, Vice President Of Lummus Technology informed about 'Refinery Pivot Points in a Refinery – Petrochemical Integrated Complex'. He elaborated on the challenges as a Refiner, The drivers of Rapid Petrochemical, Synergies of Refinery/ Petro Integration & Hydro Processing. He also informed about how the Integration is to be done in refineries to have maximum Petrochemical Production; Mr. Michel Molinier, Licensing Technical Sales Manager, Exxon Mobil delivered on 'LPI – Liquid phase isomerization Process for Paraxylene Production'. He informed about how LPI affords significant energy saving and its Integration in Grassroot Aromatics. Also he explained on how Ethylbenzene is more energy intensive and is used because of Simple process, Low cost catalyst, Inexpensive Vessel, Low T Operations, Long cycles and Very low Xylene loss; Mr. Vinay Gupta, Senior Manager Of Engineers India Limited intimated about 'Refining & Petrochemicals- Current Status & Future Outlook'. He spoke about the general trends in refining. He also emphasized on The Indian Energy Outlook, Embracing transition of Energy, Investment in the alternate sources of Energy & New Technologies, Integration to High Growth Sector & Digitalization for improving performance and competitive edge.
Technical Session III was chaired by Mr. L.W. Khongwir, ED, Mathura Refinery, Indian Oil Corporation Limited with the theme Operational Excellence: Unlocking Business Value and Asset Optimization. The Speaker Dr. Purandar Chakravarty, VP & Head – Innovation and Alternate Energy, Nayara Energy Limited. (Formerly Essar Oil Limited) delivered on 'Agility in a rapidly changing Energy Eco-System'. He informed about the changes due to the changing Eco-System such as rise in standard of living, Demand & Supply, Development of Non Renewables, Climate Change and Pollution, etc. Also he informed about the alternative ways to bring down Emissions by creating a Circular Economy, Utilization of Plastic Energy, Digitalization and Block Chain; Mr. Srihari Kannan, Licensing Technology Manager, Shell Catalyst & Technologies informed about 'Operational Excellence Delivering Continuous Improvement'. He also informed about GAME (Global Asset Management Excellence); Mr. Sanjay Thakker, Director Refinery & Petrochemicals, Emerson Automation Solutions India delivered on 'Digital Transformation of Refinery Operations to achieve Top Quartile Performance'. He informed about the Analytics of Digitalization explaining its Principles such as Rule Base informing its simple and easily available, Time Monitoring & Net Knowledge with the ways of Energy Optimization.
Mr. Vipin Goel, Director WR Grace chaired the Technical Session IV with the theme Process Technology Innovations- Refining. The Speaker Dr. M.O. Garg, President- Refining & PetChem R&D, Reliance Industries Limited spoke about 'Simultaneous Production of Benzene and Gasoline from C-6 Heart Cut of FCC Gasoline'. He Emphasized on the recovery of Benzene from Olefinic DIH side cut extractive distillation. He mainly spoke about the minimization of solvent loss and utility requirement; Mr. Martin Gough, Managing Director CALGAVIN Limited informed about 'Judging and Enabling Effective Cost Savings through Innovative Heat Transfer Enhancement Technology'. He explained about HiTran (Thermal System Working Principle). Also he compared the Plane Bore Finned Tube with HiTran System in reference to the Graphite Vent Gas Condenser and Feed/ Effluent Exchanger Revamps. He mentioned the key benefits of HiTran System; Mr. Durgesh Pandey, Sr. Process Engineer, Lummus Technology deliberated on 'Novolen Polypropylene Technology'. He informed about the Gas Phase Process and introduction to Direct Catalyst. Also he explained about the types of reactors and all the products right from refinery to basic products produced through Novolen Technology.
AWARD CEREMONY: Downstream India Excellence Awards 2019's eminent Jury included Dr. RK Malhotra, Director General, FIPI ; Dr. Sanjeev S katti, Director General, ONGC Energy Sector; Shri Ajay N Deshpande, Former Director (Technical) & CMD (I/C), Engineers India Limited and Shri Manoj Joshi, Former Director (Technical), Engineers India Limited. The jury also included Shri G. C. Chaturvedi, Chairman, ICICI Bank and Former Secretary MON&PG as the Chief Guest And Shri S.M. Vaidya, Conference Chairman, GRPC 2019 & Executive Director (Operations), IOCL. Following DIEA 2019 awards were awarded:
I. Refinery of the year : Panipat Refinery IOCL & Numaligarh Refinery Limited (Joint Winners)
II. R&D company of the year : Reliance & IOCL (R&D Center) (Joint Winners)
III. Special Commendation Award (R&D Company of the year) : EIL & HPCL (R&D Center)
The day concluded with the Gala entertaining evening & dinner, with the magical performance from a celebrity illusionist Rahul Kharbanda.
The Second day commenced with the Leadership Panel II which highlighted Downstream Technology Trends. Mr. Manas Majumdar, Partner, KPMG India was the Moderator. Before calling the Panelists, he informed about the background of downstream market with some new concepts coming up. He also suggested the ways of sustainability by the reuse and recycle to plastics and by the greener approach. Mr. B. Ashok, CEO, RRPCL spoke about the Indian scenario of petrochemicals and how integrated projects should be set up with reference to the future and plastics should be banned. He also informed about the New Operating Technologies and suggested not to choose anything that is problematic 5 years down the lane. Mr. N.K. Bansal, Director (Oil Refining & Marketing), Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry explained about the Industrial Initiatives for Commercialization stating it is not to the extent or as fast as it is required. He also told that Indian refineries such as Paradeep and Mathura Refinery are picking up fast pace. Dr. K K Pant, Prof. and Head of Chemical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi described on how the technology is developed in India and why is the Integration of Industry & Academia Important. discussed about the new trends in Refining and the challenges being faced while using intelligence. He also told about Dimethyl being better than Methanol fuel. Dr. Purandar Chakravarty, VP & Head- Innovation and Alternate Energy, Nayara Energy Limited (Formerly Essar Oil Limited) told that with increasing growth, the upgradation of technology is required which in turn increases the efficiency. He also suggested the ways of ensuring self sufficiency while explaining the circular economy and decentralization of an organization. He spoke on cleaner technologies in Coal & Petrochemicals by putting emphasis on Euro II engines. He focused on the need of Strong Grid and Electric Vehicles. Mr. Yi-Jeng-Huang, Senior Market Development Specialist, S&P Global Platts explained about the two major trends that are driving the industry, i.e., Sustainability (plastic recycle can create huge business opportunity) and Transportation (fuels consumed more and 30% of oil goes to plastics).
Technical Session V which threw light on Sustainable Refining- Co-Processing, Renewables and Future Fuels was chaired by Dr. Anjan Ray, Director, CSIR-IIP. Mr. Ramesh Bhujade, Vice President- R&D, Reliance Industries Limited informed about 'RCAT-HTL: New pathway for sustainable refining by Co-processing Drop-in Renewable Liquid fuel'. He explained the breakthrough using Algae platform Technology. Also he spoke on how the water is used as a solvent to break complex biomass at near supercritical conditions discussing about the recovery of water in the process. Mr. Dharmesh Mahajan, Bio-renewable business development leader (India & Africa), Renewable Energy & Chemicals, Honeywell UOP Deliberated on 'Biomass to Bio-Crude to Biofuel: Integrated Bio Refineries in India'. He explained about the liquid biomass and its easy storage. Char is used to produce energy hence no external energy is required. GHG emission from RTP are 70-90% lower than fuel oil. RTP units will reduce stubble burning supporting rural economy over long period of time. Wg Cdr A Shrivastava, Project Director (IAF's Bio-jet Fuel Project), Centre for Air Power Studies explained the 'Sustaining Bio-Jet fuel in India: The Fight Plan'. He emphasized on the two major requirements of CORSIA (Carbon offsetting & Reduction Scheme) ,i.e., Operational requirements & Technical Requirements. Also he described Kochi airport being the first green airport and India being the fastest aviation domestic market.
Technical Session VI was chaired by Mr. S.P. Garg, Executive Director (HSE), GAIL (INDIA) Limited in which Industry 4.0 Next Generation Safety was discussed. The Speaker Mr. Jitendra Kumar, Director, DEKRA Process Safety intimated about 'Comprehensive Safety Improvement and Capacity Building'. He spoke about the development of SMS with reference to its training and competence. He also discussed about Gap analysis explaining the handling and process control. Also he explained about the hazard recognition and creating sustainable solutions. Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Dy. General Manager (Corporate HS&E), IOCL informed about 'Preparing Safety Leadership for Industry 4.0'. He informed about the new digital equipments like drones and robots and the strategy development being proactive. The leaders are now more educated and Physically and Mentally more fit. Lagging and leading indicators have to be balanced. He suggested to be mindful in order to manage time. Mr. Mithun Chakraborty, Managing Director, Busch Vacuum India Pvt Ltd explained the 'Busch Vacuum Technology in Oil & Gas Sector'. He spoke about the production of pump system & solutions, Ethylene glycol regeneration, Seawater deoxygenation, Crude oil Regeneration. Also he suggested Vapour recovery Application to reduce environmental hazards.
Technical Session VII was Chaired by Dr. GS Kapur, Executive Director (R&D), Indian Oil Corporation Limited with the theme Process Technology Innovations- Petrochemicals. The speaker Mr. Ashish Kumar Shah was nominated on behalf of Mr. Alok Saxena, Managing Director, Sulzer- GTC Technology. He explained on 'A solution for Value Upgradation of Pygas in Integrated Refinery Petrochemical and Crude Oil to Chemical Complexes'. Based on ethylene production of cracker, he explained the naptha cracker Byproducts (overall Processing). Components focused on Isoprene, CPD and DCPD. Mr. Shouvik Sarkar, Senior Technical Advisor,

Olefins Technology, KBR Technology spoke on 'KBR's Propane Dehydrogenation Technology (K-PRO) meets market-driven on-purpose propylene demand'. He explained about the orthoflow reactor being commercially proven. Also Higher conversion will lead to lower propane recycle and higher operating pressure. Higher selectivity will lead to higher catalyst activity. The opex will decrease by 10-20% and the catalyst loss will be minimum. Mr. Girish Kale, Sales Manager, Speciality Catalysts, W.R. Grace delivered on 'Innovative Catalyst Systems in Value-Driven UNIPOL® PP Technology'. He spoke about the Polyolefins Technology & UNIPPAC (Advanced Process Control). There are 58 running plant globally and any modifications in plant/process are not required. The Polyolefins is a non- phthalate technology will lighter, faster, cleaner and clearer product capability. It is a 6th Generation Z-N Catalyst.
Technical Session VIII focused on Next Generation catalysts and was chaired by Mr. Sriganesh Gandham, Executive Director R&D, HPCL. Mr. Amar Kumar, Head- Operations, Nayara Energy Limited (Formerly Essar Oil Limited) was the Session Co-Chairman. The speaker Mr. Ashit Rakshit, Business Manager, ART Hydroprocessing informed about 'Catalytic Solutions for Increasing Middle Distillate Yields – Resid Hydrocracking and Post Hydrotreating Synergy'. He spoke about the dual catalyst system and Catalytic solution for increasing middle distillate yields. He also told that Diesel aromatics < 20 wt % and Naputha Nitrogen < 0.5 ppm which shows 80% conversion. Mr. Markus Schulte, Senior Accounts Manager, Shell Catalysts and Technologies explained about 'Catalyst Presentation on: Challenging Pyrolysis Gasoline Feedstocks- How to tackle increasing CS2 Levels'. He highlighted Thiophene and Hexanthiole. CS2 events are common due to changes in feed states. He also informed that CS2 acts like a semi- permanent poison on both nickel & palladium catalyst. Mr. K. O. Xavier, Chief Research manager, IOCL (R&D) spoke on 'Challenges and Opportunities in Refining Catalyst Development: Indian Oil's Efforts'. He emphasized on the development and advancements of refining catalysts. He also explained about INDMAX (Olefin Production Technology), iMax Series ZSM-5, Octazoom, RUA (Reside Upgradation Additive), ECO-MAX, Gasoline Desulfurization, INDA dept Technology. He informed that the new DHDT Catalyst technology INDICAT prime is able to meet BS(VI) level.
This was followed by a Valedictory Session comprising of Smt. Vartika Shukla, Executive Director (Technical), EIL who summarized the entire two day Conference well, action points highlighted & Prof. Dr. G.D. Yadav, Vice- Chancellor, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) who introduced ICT to all the attendees. He told that the requirement of energy are going to grow tremendously. Also creating cleaner energy is going to be very important in the future. The major challenges will be the green house gases. So any technology that we develop should know how to cope up with all these challenges. He concluded with the challenges as inevitable but we need to be innovative with the development of the technologies.
The two day event was informative with lots of attendees from around the globe who appreciated the congress.
