The recent arrest of threeIranians settled in the City forimpersonating police and vigi-lance to rob people has brought

to light a well-knit network of some 15such Iranian gangs.

North Zone police said the arrest ofGhulam Hussain, Osman, and Sallufrom Langer House, Mahankalirevealed they are not alone. The trioexplained the modus operandi. Theywould first observe rich merchants orpeople coming from districts who arelikely to carry cash. In two’s and three’sthey would mark them and would tack-le them at the right opportunity. Thismeant that they have an ‘intelligencenetwork’ which shows poorly on policewho let the gangs go lightly oncecaught.

Some of the gangs would straight-away pose as Vigilance officers anddemand to know what was in the suit-case or in backpack. They would shedthe niceties once the quarry objects.Out will come the knife or an illegalfirearm. The man or men would rathergive the money and valuables than get-

ting hurt, explained R Nursing Rao, SubInspector of Afzalgunj police station.

Sometimes, said Rao, these gangswould flash a fake identity card pro-claiming them as police SIs or headconstables and start demandingmoney. “They resort to all sort of con-ning. Most of them are young and haveno regular job and they indulge in thissort of thing.” Just two days ago it wasthe same Iranian gang that robbed agroundnut dealer Syed Aziz atGowliguda Chaman of `5.50 lakh. Theduo is not traced yet.

Their favourite areas of operationare bus stands and railway stations. They are active in Secunderabad,Mahankali, Bowenpally and surround-ings. They have a colony at Bhewandi

and settlements in Guntakkal,Gulbarga and Bidar. But they are most-ly found not far away from railway sta-tions.PK SURENDRAN

The GHMC finally woke up tothe woes of the peoplethronging the Niloufer

Hospital in AC Guards, by startingto re-carpet the tiny stretch ofroad that is in front of the hospi-tal’s Women and Children, andEmergency wings. However, sincea week, the repair work has dis-mantled and blocked the onlyroad that connects to the hospital.

There are two accesses toNiloufer Hospital, one from RedHills and the other from ACGuards. The access from RedHills is completely blocked andis posing to be a menace to thehundreds of patients who comehere. The diversion that they areforced to take to reach the hospi-tal can waste valuable time, especially during an emergency.

“The road is extremelyimportant due to its connectivi-ty to the hospital, and repairingit will take a long time. During anemergency, we have to take adiversion wading through thetraffic and pedestrians. It takes avery long time to reach the hos-pital now,” said an ambulancedriver at Niloufer Hospital, whowished to maintain anonymity.

Fateeha Bi, a patient at thehospital, said that when shecame here in an auto-rickshaw,she had a tough time negotiat-ing with the driver. “I am hav-ing a baby and the road is toobumpy for me to walk. I had toconvince the auto driver totake the diversion and had topay him `20 extra. We are poorand it matters to us,” she said.

Earlier, the barely 200-metre-long road was a perfect exampleof Hyderabadi roads -- potholedand uneven! It only got worseover time, and the innumerable

speed-breakers only added tothe misery of motorists. But now,the blockade is proving to be abigger menace especially for res-idents. Shahid Khan, whoresides in the apartments oppo-site the hospital, said, “The roadwasn’t great earlier. But with apart of it blocked, it is evenworse now. My car’s suspensionis getting spoilt. A road that took5 minutes to navigate before, isnow taking 10 minutes. The roadshould be re-carpeted ,” he said.

Shahid also pointed that theaccess from Red Hills is blocked

with barricades, which, in turn,is blocked by auto-rickshawswaiting for customers. “This iscreating traffic jams,” he added.

On the other hand, motoristsare happy that the road is beingrepaired. “It was about time theGHMC started work on thisroad. It has been practicallyunusable for years,” saidSharma, a regular user.

Whether for good, or other-wise, the road needs to berepaired urgently, especially forthousands of patients who flockNiloufer Hospital every day.

All the political parties in theAssembly session want busi-ness conducted. But nobody

is ready to keep quiet and eachwants to contribute to the decibellevel, which is high these days.

On day 3, the situationremained same. Each party followsits agenda and at the end theSpeaker bangs the gong to signaladjournment.

Chief minister Kiran KumarReddy and PCC Chief BotsaSatyanarayana say the governmentis ready to discuss any issue but theruckus should be avoided.

To begin with, the TRS said itsleader Harish Rao will not stall theHouse but let the Telangana reso-lution be taken up which othersdid not agree for. He wants to knowhow they could expect co-opera-tion of TRS when Governor ESLNarasimhan had given a report tothe Centre against Telangana.

Then there is the TDP chasingthe government on the liquorscam. PCC chief BotsaSatyanarayana says the Congress isclean and not involved in theliquor scam, but does the TDPcare?

Caught between the Congressand Opposition parties, MIM lead-er Ahmed Pasha Quadri regretsthat neither party bothers aboutthe plight of other parties who areunwittingly get caught in the cross-fire.

Speaker N Manohar is at hiswit’s end. He says he is trying hisbest to transact business but mem-bers are working cross-purposes.Amid this confusion,YSRC is dar-ing the Speaker to take actionagainst Congress members fordefying the whip during no-confi-dence motion.

Fed up, the Chief MinisterKiran Kumar Reddy hit out at theTDP for its double standard. Theparty, he said, was not cooperatingwith the Speaker on one hand andwas blaming him for not taking upthe business at the same breath.

Finance minister AnamRamanarayana Reddy, onFriday, will present a tax-free, welfare-cum-devel-

opment-oriented budget for2012-13, it is expected.

Sources say that this budgetwill pave the way for a buoyanteconomic activity in the nextfinancial year. While only softcopies of the budget speech areproposed to be supplied, hardcopies are being made ready atthe request of some members.

The sources said the govern-ment is likely to peg the size ofthe budget to around `1,50,000crore.

The State is projected to havea revenue surplus, while thefinance department hasreceived proposals for around

`1,60,000 crore from variousdepartments as part of theonline submission of demandsthis year.

As per the revised estimatesfor 2010-11, the State is likely tohave a revenue surplus of `540crore against the budgeted`3,548 crore. The fiscal deficit isestimated at `13,670 crore, about 2.6 per cent of GSDP.

While the finance minister isgearing up to present yet anoth-er tax-free budget, there areapprehensions that the taxeswould be imposed only duringthe financial year through GOswithout mentioning the same inthe budget. Perhaps, the newimposts may come forth in Mayor June.

The finance minister toldPostnoon that the general strikeimpacted the tax collection, though temporarily. “We will beable to reach the targets,” he saidconfidently.

The commercial tax depart-

ment is with Chief Minister NKiran Kumar Reddy and sourcesin the government said that theCM was not for increasing tax onconsumers and hence thefinance minister had littlechance for hiking the taxes. There will be no fresh taxes, especially in view of the the by-elections and election to local

bodies.The irrigation department

which received `15,010 croreunder the plan budget last yearhas requested for an allocationof `35,000 crore in 2012-2013 toaccelerate Jalayagnam projects.

The government is also likelyto enhance the budgetary allo-cation for Jalayagnam, as itwants to deomonstrate its com-mitment to farmers and to nursethe agriculture constituency inthe next elections.

The panchayat raj depart-ment wanted a substantialincrease in its allocations tomeet the expenditure on ruraldevelopment activities. Same isthe case with education andmunicipal administrationdepartments.

The government is said to beworking on ensuring the fiscaldeficit is below the five per centlimit prescribed by the FiscalResponsibility and BudgetManagement Act.

CPI MLAs Kunanmneni SambasivaRao and B Chandravathi onThursday charged Speaker

Nadendla Manohar with acting like aCongressman and alleged that he was notacting independently in running thehouse.

Pointing out that for the last threedays the House did not transact any busi-ness, they found fault with the Speakerfor blaming the Opposition. They saidthat the Speaker was acting as per the dik-tat of the Congress and chief minister, while the TRS and the TDP were alsodancing to the tunes of the ruling party.

They said that this was the first timethat APCC chief Botsa Satyanaryana andthe chief minister were at loggerheads. They said that the chief minister wasusing the ACB report to keep Botsa under

check. They also found fault with theSpeaker for not acting on the CongressMLAs supporting YSR Congress and fordefying the whip. Why the PRP MLAswere being given a special treatment aftermerging with the Congress, they asked.

The CM was protecting some minis-ters in the liquor scam while exposingsome others including Botsa, they said.Blaming the Opposition, the Speaker andthe chief minister were seeing to it thatthe House did not transact any business, they charged.

The House could not transact anybusiness, with the Speaker adjourningthe House twice for half-an-hour each. The TDP demanded discussion on liquorsyndicate, while the TRS sought a sepa-rate Telangana resolution again for thethird day in a row. They did not heed therequest of the Speaker to allow the busi-ness of the House to be conducted, forc-ing Manohar to adjourn the House.

Not long ago Cyber crimewas synonymous withcomputer manipulationbut now smart phones

have taken over as the ‘smart tool’ toperpetuate cyber crimes.

In terms of smart phones, unlocking (under certain condi-tion), unblocking and installingpirated apps etc. come under cyber-crime. Unlocking a phone is not ille-gal, but unlocking a phone which isunder contract is a breach of con-tract and is subject to legal action. With cyber criminals exploring thesmart phones market, the businessof installing top paid apps for freeon mobiles is flourishing in the mar-ket. Huge billboards around the Citylure customers by offering top paidapps which they will install on theirsmart phones for free. Apps piracyalso comes under software piracyand it is illegal as per Indian CyberLaws.

There’s been a rapidly growingtrend in mobile app piracy, owingto the easy access that is currentlypresent for piracy. Step into thefamous Jagdish Market or any othermobile market in city and you canwitness hoardings or billboards infront of these shops that promiseunlocking and jail-breaking(mak-ing mobile phones usable to

cracked versions of Apps) is donehere. Shockingly the shopkeepersalso download many high paidApps for free with unlocking or jailbreaking.

“These days the market is flilledwith smart phones and unlockingyour phone is crucial if you want tohave the ultimate smart phoneexperience. You’ll be able to installapplications and themes for free, you gain access to new and freedownloads and softwares, you willbe able to use any cell carrier net-

work or GSM Sim cards in theworld,” said Md. Ahmed, owner ofHyderabad Electronics, JagdishMarket.

“On average we get 10 to 15 cus-tomers per day. Nothing is illegalthese days; without unlocking andjail breaking you can’t use yourphone then what’s the fun in pur-chasing it. Many people downloadthese softwares and do it at home”he adds.

In case of an iPhone, the phoneis first jail-broken which helps in

installing the pirated softwares, while on android phones, the .apkfiles can be installed directly. Toppaid apps like productivity tools, games, camera tools, or photo-shops which are available on all themobile platforms can be easilydownloaded and installed for free inthese shops. Software piracy wasvery common in computers but isnow getting even more commonand easier on the smart phones andtablets.

However, the cyber crime offi-cials have different take on the issue“Unless we get an official complaintfrom the concerned company, be itApple or Google we can’t take anyaction. Even though we are awarethe Apps piracy is high inHyderabad market we are helplesson this account. If any particularcompany comes to us and say thatunlocking is done in an illegal man-ner in the market or software is mis-used then we can take stringentaction against the culprit,” said RamMohan, SI, Cyber Crime,Hyderabad.

Recently in the US, a BostonUniversity student was slapped witha fine of $6,59,115 for downloadingand sharing songs. They are veryparticular about the piracy Act andtake measures in catching the cul-prits and taking stringent actionsagainst them. But it’s a far cry herewhere we have many open marketswhere there are big shops to do thisillegal activity which are making haywhile the sun shines.

Motley crew, heady cocktail

What kind of music hasThurisaz been influenced by?We started playing in thenineties so we have been influ-enced by bands like Amorphis,My Dying Bride, Dimmu Borgir,Cradle Of Filth, Children OfBodom. Influences ofMeshuggah, Tool, Opeth, DevinTownsend, Porcupine Tree canbe found in our collections. Andin each of those bands there areelements we admire.

What does “Thurisaz” mean? It’s one of the old GermanFuthark-runes. One of the

meanings is “the gathering ofdifferent opinions” that is whatour band stands for — a mixtureof different styles blendedtogether.

“We associate Gnarlwith mysticism andold worldliness. It

also depicts the different facets ofour personality and our lyrics, which are deeper than they firstseem,” observes vocalist and leadguitarist of the band TamarChatterjee contemplatively. Buta question or two later, he laugh-ingly admits, “I am the lyricist,

Ram is the brooder and Taj getsall the groupies.”

Founded in 2003, Gnarl cameinto the lime-light two years laterwhen they cut a self-titled musicalbum with Sony Music. Theirvideos When and Path, wereamong the first videos to be airedon VH1. Seven years later, theband consisting of trio — Tamar, drummer Taj Khan and bass gui-tarist Ram Reddy — is finallygoing to launch its yet-to-be-named second album later thisyear.

“It’sbeen a long time since thelast one. So a lot of thought has

gone into each of the tracks. Wehave certainly mellowed downand I guess it shows. We evenhave a couple of acoustics inthere,” observes Tamar, beforeadding, “We are going to playsome of the new tracks for thefirst time in Hyderabad.”

Gnarl has the added distinc-tion of being a band that’s earneditself the reputation of beingcomposition driven, a far cryfrom the run-of-the-mill coverbands. Their music, the bandsays, is replete with metaphorsbased on diverse themes thatdeal with personal strife, socio-

economic issues and the eternaltriumph of good over evil andtheir lyrics are potent andthought provoking.

And they couldn’t be happierperforming on home ground.“Everybody is always thinkingDelhi, Mumbai or some other cityis so much better. But havingplayed everywhere, I feel there’sno big difference between

Hyderabad and any other place. In fact, we have always had agreat time playing here and wecan’t wait to play here tomorrow,”signs off Tamar.

A BRIEF HISTORY1. Tibet emerged from an obscure history to flourish in the 7th cen-

tury AD as an independent kingdom with its capital at Lhasa. 2. In the 13th century, Tibet fell under Mongol influence only to be

replaced by the Ch'ing dynasty in 1720. 3. In 1906–1907, Britain recognised China's suzerainty over Tibet.

However, the Tibetans were able to expel the Chinese in Tibet andreassert their independence in 1912.

4. By a Tibetan–Chinese agreement (May, 1951), Tibet became a‘national autonomous region’ of China under the traditional ruleof the Dalai Lama, but under the actual control of a ChineseCommunist commission.

5. After 1959, a full-scale revolt broke out prompted in part by fearfor the personal safety of the Dalai Lama. The Chinese suppressedthe rebellion, but the Dalai Lama was able to escape to India.

6. In 1965 the Tibetan Autonomous Region was formally established.

As this article is beingwritten, the TibetanParliament in Exile andthe Kashag have con-

vened a top-level meeting todiscuss the situation in Tibet.Needless to say, the situation iscritical. The self-immolation ofTenzin Choedon, an 18-year-oldnun in Sichuan province as aprotest against Beijing's treat-ment of Tibetan people, has jolt-ed the world to the intensifying

agitation. Cheodon is the sec-ond teenager to set herselfablaze in the last week. Reportsindicate that as many as 18monks, nuns and ordinaryTibetans have set themselves onfire over the past year in a des-perate bid to register theirprotests.

The Central TibetanAdministration and the Chineseanticipate that the upcomingTibetan New Year, Losar, onFebruary 22 might see Tibetanstaking to the streets. In fact, thePrime Minister of CTA Lobsang

Sangay grimly commentedin an AP interview,“Theyhave sealed off Tibet.Chinese security per-sonnel are crackingdown on Tibetans on onepretext or another, and theworld will not know whetherthey were arrested, whetherthey were tortured, whetherthey were killed.”

The world waits with batedbreath at how the Free Tibetmovement will progress, if theChinese continue to maintaintheir rigid stance on the issue.

The fight for Free Tibet The self-immolation of an 18-

year-old nun in Sichuan onMonday puts the

spotlight back on the intensifying fight for Free Tibet

“Self-immolation is a last-ditch attempt,an 'extremely violent form of non-vio-

lent' protest for Tibetan monks and nuns whowere the first to be affected by the Chinesecrackdown. The reason these incidents arehappening is because there is no space fornegotiations. Talks with the Chinese usuallyrun into dead ends while the clampdown on

Tibetans continues. So until that changes and there is open dia-logue, these tragedies will continue to happen. Both the DalaiLama and Lobsang Sangay are asking for Genuine Autonomy.Instead of being an irritant, China should use Tibet to build abridge with the rest of the world. There is no doubt the mostrational way forward is to embrace the Middleway.”

DAMASCUS: Syria’s president, who is fighting an Arab Spring-inspired revolt, called onWednesday a Constitutional ref-erendum that would effectivelyend nearly 50 years of single-party rule, state media said.

A day after rejecting UN alle-gations of crimes againsthumanity, Bashar al-Assadcalled the referendum forFebruary 26, in a move aimed atplacating growing global outrageover the bloodshed.

In April, Assad scrappedemergency rule in force since1963, when the Baathists tookpower in a coup d’etat. But he hasrepeatedly promised reformsthat have failed to materialisesince the uprising erupted.Theembattled president, who suc-ceeded his late father Hafez in2000, has said the Constitutionwould usher in a “new era” forSyria, SANA news agency said.

“When the new constitutionis approved, Syria will havepassed the most important sta -ge” of reforms, bringing a “br i lli -

ant future for next generations,”Assad was quoted as saying.

Russian Foreign MinisterSergei Lavrov said “we certainlybelieve a new constitution to endone-party rule in Syria is a stepforward. It is welcome and wehope it will be adopted.”

The opposition SyrianNational Council is likely to

reject the constitution, as itsmain guiding principles is “tooverthrow the regime using alllegal means.” Regardless, theproposed charter rules out mostof the opposition as it bans reli-gious parties and dual nationals, preventing the SNC and most ofits leadership from running foroffice. AFP

WASHINGTON: President Ba r ackObama launched his latest cross-countrytrawl for campaign cash on Wednesday atan auspicious moment — as his approvalrating hit the crucial 50 per cent barrier intwo new polls.

There were also signs that strengtheningjobs growth and a quickening recovery wereimproving his standing in several key statesthe president will need to capture if he is towin re-election in November.

While the news is not all good for Obama— his economic management still gets lowmarks from voters — the poll and otherrecent surveys suggest prospectiveRepublican challengers are less popular thanthe president. A New York Times/CBS Newspoll pegged Obama’s job rating at exactly 50per cent — a key point, as history shows pres-

idents at that level have a much higherchange of re-election than those struggling toreach the plateau.

A CNN/ORC poll had Obama at an iden-tical 50 per cent approval rating. Yet despite

upbeat news, the White House has warnedthat one good set of economic indicators isnot conclusive, and there is concern thatthe economy could slow or the jobless ratecould rise as the election draws closer.Outside shocks like a worsening Europeandebt crisis or a military confrontation withIran, have the potential to darken Obama’sprospects. Mitt Romney comes the closestof Obama’s possible general election foes tobeating him, trailing the president by 48 to42 per cent. Obama meanwhile leads surg-ing Republican candidate Rick Santorumby 49 per cent to 41 per cent.

However, there were warning signs forObama. Fifty per cent of those asked saidthat they still disapproved of his manage-ment of the economy, compared to 44 per cent who approved. AFP

TALK BACKSystem makeoverIt is not right to blame doctors who go onstrikes every now and then holding to ran-som a population already down. The verysystem is to blame for the stateof affairs. Management of pri-vate colleges demand astro-nomical amounts as capitationfees, while severe limitations ofgovernment colleges make aspir-ing students and parents still looktowards private colleges to fill thevoid. Having made heavy ‘invest-ments’ and many a sacrifice enroute to becoming a doctor, ‘recovering’ allthat is paramount for the doctor, service onlycomes later. So, set the system right.

“... but for my own sake I do not regret thisjourney, which has shown that Englishmencan endure hardships, help one another, andmeet death with as great a fortitude as ever inthe past. We took risks, we knew we tookthem; things have come out against us, andtherefore we have no cause for complaint, butbow to the will of providence, determined stillto do our best to the last... Had we lived, Ishould have had a tale to tell of the hardi-hood, endurance, and courage of my compan-ions which would have stirred the heart ofevery Englishman. These rough notes and ourdead bodies must tell the tale, but surely, sure-ly, a great rich country like ours will see thatthose who are dependent on us are properlyprovided for.”Last message in the journals of Robert F Scott

Antarctica has spurred the imagina-tion of generations, its icy wastes andfrozen silence broken only by the callof Emperor Penguins and the ethere-

al sound of whales drifting through theSouthern ocean. Explorers have long beenlured by its crevasses and mountains, lookingfor a Shangri-la carved from the very bosomof the Earth. But while earlier explorerssought knowledge and were led by a quest totest their mettle against the elements, thesedays, men set their sights on the continent forvery different reasons.

A few weeks ago a Russian team of scien-tists drilled a hole 2.3 miles down through theAntarctic ice into Lake Vostok, claimed to bean undiscovered Eden of life that could wellfill the gaps in our knowledge of evolution. The sample they collected should have been ascientist’s delight, but when it was handed toPutin as a gift, the politicisation of Antarcticawent into overdrive.

Science is a facade, there is so much moreto Russia’s expedition than just a philanthrop-ic quest to learn about who we are and fromwhence we came.

It has long been speculated thatAntarctica could be home to millions of gal-

lons of oil, not to mention untapped acres ofnatural gas, but thanks to the Antarctic Treaty, the rape of our last untouched wilderness hasbeen put on hold. For how long, however, isanyone’s guess.

Article 1 of the charter states: “The area[Antarctica] is to be used for peaceful purpos-es only; military activity, such as weaponstesting, is prohibited but military personneland equipment may be used for scientificresearch or any other peaceful purpose.” So,as long as no one decides to go postal andnuke any oil deposits there are ways aroundthe charter.

Most of the 49 Treaty members have sci-entific bases on the continent. Their researchhas yielded invaluable insights into the histo-ry of our planet, and its ecological develop-ment. But wonders like Lake Vostok, buriedfor thousands of years under the ice, andprobably possessing an ecosystem unlikeanything we have ever seen, are far too valu-able to be prodded and probed.

Antarctica has remained a wonder simplybecause we have not meddled with it.

When Scott, Amundsen and Shackletonvisited they were overwhelmed by the beautyof the land; a beauty so consuming it wasvicious. Scott’s quest to be the first at theSouth Pole was unsuccessful, but on his ill-fated journey he left behind journals thatchart this most magnificent of places as only aman who knows the end is nigh can.

There is a cross on the Observation Hillmemorial to the Scott party. On it areinscribed a few words from Tennyson: "Tostrive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

We have striven, sought and found, andnow we must never yield our last continent tothe plundering forces that have destroyed somuch. Antarctica is ours, it belongs to thehuman race, not to Big Oil and grubby gov-ernments, and whatever lies beneath the iceshould remain there.

Antarctica may hold many secrets and willalways throw up confounding mysteries likethe Piri Reis Map, but that doesn’t mean webarge in, bulldozers and drills in tow.Sometimes the beauty of a mystery is justthat... the mystery.

MALNUTRITION TOstunt a generation

Asurvey by an internation-al agency has stated

that at least 500 millionchildren, primarily in South

Asia, could grow up physicallyand mentally stunted in the

next 15 years due to malnutri-tion. Ironically, a buoyant PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh was

on Wednesday congratulatingthe country for the record-

breaking bumper harvest of250 million tonnes. Thanks to

sub-standard storage and trans-port facilities, about one-third

of the produce rots away beforeit can be channeled to the

needy. An inefficient public dis-tribution system (PDS) and therelated red tape tangle cuts off

another chunk of the popula-tion from affordable food

grains. Unless this problem isaddressed effectively, we might

soon have on our hands anentire generation with underde-

veloped physical and mentalcapabilities. Right to food is

essentially a part of the right tolife — a fundamental right. Thegovernment must act decisively

before the sheen of the greenrevolution is nullified by

the hollow eyes of the starving millions.

Wearing dentures isnot an option for many simplybecause they are so cumber-some — they either float upwhen you drink water or you’reforced to remove them eachnight. This is where dentalimplants step in as a boon.

What is an implant?According to Dr Hajera Sultana, dental surgeon, “Dental impla -nts are artificial replicas of theroots of the teeth. It is a meansto replace a lost tooth.” Dentalimp lants are growing in popu-larity due to their variousadvantages. Dr Suhas Mathur, conservative de n tist and endo -dontist expl ains, “Im plantsprovide for better loo king aes-thetics (ie they look like yournatural teeth), are said to pro-vide for better chewing effec-tiveness than many otherrepla ce m ent optio ns, and are agr eat permanent solution”.

Dr Ha jera adds that in cer-tain situatio ns, if th ere is theabsence of a tooth, the toothnext to it has the tende ncy totilt into that area. If one has animplant, this will not occ ur.Getting an impl ant al so helpsmaintain the structure of thejaw as they fit in the sa meplace as your normal teeth.

Materials usedDr Suhas says, “Dentalimplants are basically made oftitanium metal and replace thetooth’s root. A ceramic(implants are made of a specialkind of ceramic) tooth is laterplaced on top of the implant.”Dr Hajera explains that ourbones do not easily accept for-eign bodies and may thuscause an infection. Hence tita-

nium is used because it is biocompatible. A dental implantcan be done for three cases —a single tooth, multiple teeth orin some cases the completeupper or lower jaw.

The procedure“Once a tooth has beenremoved a bone graft is placed. After the graft settles down theimplant is done. Implants arebasically of two kinds —delayed loading and immediateloading,” explains Dr Hajera.Immediate loading: Once theimplant has been placed, thegum is left to heal. This takesusually around three days.Once the gum is healed, therequired crown is placed.Delayed loading: Once theimplant has been placed, atemporary crown is placed. After a few weeks, a permanentcrown is placed.

Immediate loading costsmore than `50,000 for theentire process of one toothimplant, she adds.

Getting an implant donedepends on various fac-tors such as the ageof the patient, medical condi-tion and oralhygiene. If aperson doesnot havegood oralhygiene thenthere is apossibility ofinfection.Diabetics arealso easily suscep-tible to infections whilecancer patients may haveweaker bones.

Post-treatment“The only discomfort or pain isfor some time after theimplant. After that it is like anormal tooth. One should con-tinue to follow the same pre-cautions for teeth care,”explains Dr Hajera. As theusage is the same it is impor-tant to continue stressing ongood dental hygiene. Talkingabout the popularity ofimplants, Dr Hajera says thatmany people now come to getimplants done as they are moreconscious and more aware ofimplants.

Acne... noproblem

Aclear, glowing complexion isevery girl’s dream. But a facemarred by acne is the last thing

you would want to be dealing with.Don’t stress, here are some homeremedies to treat acne.

1It is important to cleanse your face eve -ryday. Dirt and pollution tend to affectthe skin hence it is important to cleanseyour face once you return home.

2It is important to wash your face every-day. Washing your face need not meanusing soap or face wash. Cold water isgreat for treating skin acne.

3We have always been told that neem isof great medicinal value. Applying aneem face pack is said to be beneficial. It’s simple just apply the pack for 15minutes and then rinse with cold water.

4Like neem, even sandalwood paste hasgreat medicinal value. It’s simple applysandlewood paste over the acne spotand leave it overnight. This helps reduceskin irritation. In the morning wash yourface with face wash and then apply amoisturiser.

5Wash your face at night before going tobed. It is best to avoid new products inthe night (products you have not usedearlier). Rose water is suggested tocleanse an oily skin while for dry skinyou can use a cream which isn’t sticky.

6Drinking a lot of water is great for acneas it helps remove toxins from the body.In the same way, include more greenvegetables in your diet as they are easily digestible which in turn help toflush out toxins.

7Some of the natural ingredients to helpremove acne scars include rubbing thescar with ice, cucumbers or olive oil.

8Apply the juice from a freshly squeezeslemon and apply this to your face. After15 minutes you can wash it off. This isnot only effective for acne scars but alsohelps to lighten your skin tone. Similarlymix a small amount of baking sodawith water to make a paste. Dampenthe scarred area and apply the paste. After 10-15 minutes you can wash it off.

WASHINGTON: Older women mightwonder why they are unable to recallnames or places or where they keeptheir things. Chronic exposure to partic-ulate air pollution might be to blame, says a new finding.

Such women, exposed to higher lev-els of ambient particulate matter overlong term, experienced more decline intheir cognitive functioning (process bywhich one becomes aware of, perceivesor comprehends ideas) over a four-yearperiod.

Higher levels of long-term exposureto both coarse and fine particulate mat-ter, usually suspended in air, were linkedwith significantly faster cognitivedecline.

Fine particulate matter are smallparticles, 30 times thinner than humanhair, while coarse particulate matter arefour or five times the size size of fineparticles.

Exposure to particulate matter isalso tied with cardiovascular risk, whichitself may play a role in causing or accel-erating cognitive decline, the journalArchives of Internal Medicine reports.

Jennifer Weuve, assistant professorof internal medicine at Rush UniversityInstitute of Healthy Aging and the prin-cipal study investigator, with colleaguesevaluated air pollution, both coarse andfine, bearing on cognitive decline inolder women. The study involved 19,409

women aged 70 to 81 years over a 14-year period.

“Our study explored chronic expo-sure to particulate air pollution in rela-tion to decline in cognitive functioningamong older women,” said Weuve.

“Very little is known about the role ofparticulate matter exposure and itsassociation with cognitive decline,” saidWeuve, according to a Rush statement.

“Unlike other factors that may beinvolved in dementia such as diet andphysical activity, air pollution is some-thing we can intervene on as a society atlarge through policy, regulation andtechnology,” said Weuve.

This is the first study to examinechange in cognitive function over a peri-od of time and whether exposure to thesize of particulate matter is important.

Dr Divya T Sudarshan

I was due two days ago and mydoctor wants me to have asurgery. But i would like to wait itout for a couple of weeks for nat-ural birth. Is it safe?

Dear Madam in waiting, I amalways amazed at the lack of trustin one’s doctor. Is it because toomuch has been said about merce-

nary medicos waiting to operateand build their mansions? I don’tknow, but rants apart if you hadasked your doctor as to why shewanted to operate, she may havetold you one of the following —the water is too little, the baby isnot in position yet, the baby is toolarge for your pelvis. And there aremore chances of sudden stillbirths in post dated babies.

Going to history, most of ourmothers delivered in an erawhen there was no ultrasound, and the only way dates were cal-culated were by the fuzzy familymemory in relation to festivalsor full moons or holidays. Soeven the midwives and doctorswere happier waiting for thepatient to go into labour insteadof risking preterm deliveries andneonatal illnesses. But today wecan predict almost the momentof conception and regular ultrasound follow ups help us datethe pregnancy very accurately. Thus the option of delivering atthe safest time.

Playing the devil’s advocate, what happens if we wait? Well, think of the pregnancy as acoconut, there is an optimumtime when the water, the kernel, everything is right. After that thekernel becomes hard and thewater reduces.

Approximately 20 per cent ofpost-term foetuses have foetaldysmaturity (postmaturity) syn-drome, which describes infants

with characteristics of chronicintrauterine growth restrictionfrom uteroplacental insufficiency. These pregnancies are at anincreased risk of umbilical cordcompression from oligohydram-nios, nonreassuring foetal graphsin assessment, intrauterine pas-sage of meconium (baby passesmotion inside a sign of distress),and short-term neonatal compli-cations (such as hypoglycemia

[low sugar], seizures, and respira-tory distress).

Post-term pregnancy is alsoan independent risk factor forneonatal ncephalopathy, incre -ased risk of death in the first yearof life. Some of the foetal riskssuch as presence of meconiumand stillbirth have beendescribed as being greater at 41weeks of gestation and even at 40weeks of gestation as comparedwith 39 weeks’ gestation, neona-tal morbidity appears to be thelowest at around 38 weeks andincrease thereafter. Thus, term aswe see it is completion of 37weeks when the foetus is matureand safe and the 2 weeks fordelivery will be the safest fromthen which is 39 weeks.

My suggestion is ask yourdoubts to your doctor, listen toher and trust her judgement.

One day, feeling bored as Iwas, I took to surfing chan-nels and for some reason I

happened to stop to watch Balika

Vadhu on Colors, I have neverbeen a fan of the ‘rural family sto-ries’ but sometimes I stop tomock at it and remind myselfwhy I don’t like them.

But this time it was differ-ent, Anandi, the lead characterof this soap was running into adark abandoned and dilapidat-ed house to meet a woman whois shown to be chanting.

Anandi, the young

Panchayat head of the village, decides not to pay heed to thewarnings of the villagers andrisks meeting this woman her-self. The woman is a mentallyunstable person who needsmedical attention.

This is where the thoughtstruck me that this soap has alarger audience in the ruralareas and promoting the idea ofhaving a young leader, a woman

as the village head, bustingsuperstitions and myths, etc issurely inspiring progress. Ibegan to follow this and sawthem promoting vaccination, afair system of punishment, edu-cation for women and cam-paigning against child marriagebut it also has its share ofIndian masala.

Later, I scoured the Internetfor surveys related to such seri-

als and to my surprise I did findsome interesting ones. Some ofthe results stated that this dailydose of ‘edutainment’ inspiredvillagers to lead a more civilisedlife.

All in all, I must say that thisserial must not be taken off airand kudos to the makers of theshow and the channel forencouraging such educativeconcepts.

All things considered, it’s beena dry spell on television par-

ticularly for us sit-comjunkies. Old favourites like

Big Bang Theory, Grey’s Anatomy, HowI Met Your Mother and Bones are back

with their latest seasons of course. But let’s admit, none of them are

exactly holding our attention. WhileBBT still evokes a few laughs, plot-

wise it’s at a standstill. Too many peo-ple in Grey’s Anatomy are happy,

which means that nothing significantis happening. How I Met Your Motherand Bones are so hopeless, they make

you wonder how they even got theircontracts renewed. Vampire Diaries

and Supernatural are still riveting butthe episodes are simply too few and

far in between. Which means that weare desperate for some fresh blood,

so to speak. Pan Am, the perioddrama on ABC, might just be it. Set in

New York in the 1960s, the seriestakes us back to a time when air trav-el still retained its glamour and exclu-

sivity, air hostesses and cabin crewtheir larger-than-life lifestyles and

awe-inspiring attires. The pilot episode establishes the

main characters and the themes runthrough the series. It explores the tra-vails of four stewardesses of Pan Am’s

newest flight. Maggie (ChristinaRicci) the rebellious Marx-loving

chief trolley; Laura

(Margot Robbie), the latest face ofPan Am who runs away from herwedding because she “wants to seethe world”; Kate (Kelli Garner),Laura’s jealous older sister with adangerous secret; and Colette (KarineVanasse) the French beauty andmore often than not, the ‘otherwoman’. Last but not the least is ofcourse, Dean (Mike Vogel) the hand-some newly-promoted pilot of theflight who is also newly jilted by hislady love Bridget (Annabelle Wallis)who has just gone AWOL.

Due to its retro setting and char-acterisation, Pan Am was endlesslycompared to ABC’s hit show MadMen (winner of the best dramaEmmy four times in a row now) andneedless to say, found wanting. But ithas survived the comparison, and ifit’s pilot is anything to go by, showssome amount of promise.

While it lacks the gravitas of MadMen, Pan Am succeeds in depictingits own brand of new-age feminismwith each of the woman characterstreading away from convention andaiming to fly high. The backdrop ofcold-war, spy action and mysteryadds the much-needed depth to pre-vent this series from becoming asoap opera on steroids. That said, theconstant back-and-forthing betweenthe flashbacks of each character andtheir present, while helping the plot, might eventually get tiresome. Howe -ver, for now, Pan Am should safelymake its way to your watching list.Pan Am episodes are available online

Rana Daggubati istired of clarifyingrumours about hisalleged affairs ever

since he made his Bollywooddebut in Dum Maro Dum.“Of late, I have stoppedresponding to such rumours. If someone asks me to clari-fy, I tell them to go check mytweets,” Rana chuckles. Afterwrapping up shooting for amajor chunk of two of hisupcoming films, the actor isback in town to dub forNaa Ishtam. His vocalchords have taken a beating, but that doesn't stop himfrom being buoyant when he

talks about his films.Recently, he was voted as

one of most desirable men inIndia and he has come a longway to deserve the tag. “WhatI liked even more was that Iwas termed as the mostpromising new entrant. I wasa fat kid in school and thenmy job description didn'texpect me to be fit. Being inthe list makes me feel that Iam going in the right direc-tion,” Rana confesses. It tookhim more than a year to shedhis weight and then build hismuscles. “My body just could-n't take the shock for a longtime because I was doingheavy cardio, martial arts andall those things that I wasn'tused to,” he says.

Unlike most of his con-temporaries, Rana has beenchoosing unusual subjects. After playing a CM in SekharKammula's Leader and anassassin’s role in PuriJagannadh's Nenu NaaRakshasi, he's finally doing acommercial film.

His upcoming film, NaaIshtam, directed by PrakashTholeti, is being touted as aquirky love story. “I play acharacter named Ganeshwho's extremely selfish andarrogant. The beauty of thefilm is that everyone’s charac-ter is so well-etched that theaudience will end up rootingfor everyone because no oneis wrong,” Rana says.Considering that he has never

danced on-screen before,we ask him what the experi-ence was like.“You can'texpect a CM to dance. Canyou?” he grins, adding, “PremRakshit, the choreographer, was actually quite surprisedon the first day. He had got-ten so used to most of thefabulous dancers like AlluArjun, NTR and Charan thathe didn't know what to dowith me. He spent a wholeday trying to figure out whatwould suit me and then Iused to rehearse a lot.”

Apart from Naa Ishtam,he'll soon be seen in RGV'sDepartment in which he'splaying a police officer.

What was the toughestpart of acting in the film?

“Sometimes I had a problemgetting into the characterbecause I was shootingsimultaneously forDepartment and Naa Ishtam. My body language is com-pletely different in both thefilms,” he says. 2012 looksextremely packed with plen-ty of action for the actor. Hehas already begun shootingfor Krish's Krishnam VandeJagadgurum and after thathe'll move on to a bilingualfilm to be directed bySelvaraghavan. “I'll continueacting in films that haven'tbeen made before and gen-res that no one has touchedin the past. I am still tryingto strike a balance,” he addsto sign off.

Stephen Daldry’s earlier fil -ms like The Reader and TheHours had protagonistsgrappling with some

ghosts from the past and howthey get over the guilt of havingbetrayed their loved ones. His lat-est film Extremely Loud andIncredibly Close is no different. However, the problem is that onecannot sympathise with the leadcharacter who goes on an incred-ible quest across New York to feelclose to his father. Based on anovel of the same name byJonathan Safran Foer, the film hasTom Hanks, Sandra Bullock,Thomas Horn and Max vonSydow in lead roles.

We are told that Oskar Schell(Thomas Horn) has been dis-

tancing himself from his motherafter the death of his fatherThomas Schell (Tom Hanks) inthe 9/11 attacks. One day, Oskarcomes across a key inside a coveraddressed for a certain gentle-man named Black and Oskarbelieves that his father had leftthe key behind for him. Thisleads him on an extra-ordinaryquest to meet all the peoplenamed Black in New York cityand find the lock that fits the key.An old man (Maxvon Sydow),who lives with Oskar’s grand-mother, offers to help the latterin the quest.

Oskar Schell is a disturbedkid who’s way too smart for hisage. He doesn’t use the publictransport because he believes itisn’t safe anymore after 9/11 andsuffers from claustrophobia.Oskar also grapples with the

guilt of not being brave enoughto hear the last words of hisfather, moments before the lat-ter’s death. Despite ThomasHorn’s good performance asOskar, the characterisationdoesn’t leave a scope toempathise with his journey. He’stoo pesky and Stephen Daldryleaves no stone unturned toremind us about what Oskar hadlost during 9/11 attacks. Eventhe ending seems to be forced tobring a feel-good factor to thisstory. It’s a big surprise to findactors like Tom Hanks andSandra Bullock in such a preten-tious film.

The film is exactly what thename suggests. It’s extremelyloud and incredible close of test-ing the viewer’s moral strength tofeel guilty about 9/11 over andover again.

Shakira is nursing a few scrapes and hailing her brotheras a hero after he saved her from a wild sea lion attackin Cape Town, South Africa. The singer and her sibling

spied some of the aquatic mammals on a tour onSunday afternoon and decided to get a bit closer to take pic-

tures. “Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water sofast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from

me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to biteme,” she wrote on Facebook. “I was paralysed by fear and

couldn’t move, I just kept eye contact with it while mybrother ‘Super Tony’ jumped over me and literally saved

my life, taking me away from the beast.” Shakira believesthe sea lion was confused by the shiny reflection of the

Blackberry she used to take pictures. “It probably thoughtI was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it,”

she said, adding that she and Tony suffered minorscratches on nearby rocks as they tried to escape.

Adele is ‘done withbeing a bitter witch’

Adele swept Sunday’sGrammy Awards

with six gramophones, but her big win isn’t

inspiring her to rush backinto the studio.

“I am f–––––– off forfour or five years,” she

told a magazine. “If I am constantly

working, my relationshipsfail. So at least now I can

have enough time to writea happy record and be in

love and be happy... Iwon’t come out with new

music until it’s betterthan 21.”

The current loveAdele, 23, refers to is for-

“I’m never writing abreakup record again, by

the way,” she tells themagazine. “I’m done with

being a bitter witch.”

In the new issue of GQ, theactress playfully addresses thetabloids’ endless obsession withher womb.

“It’s just a weird time, I think,”Aniston says regarding the con-stant pregnancy speculation. “Thetabloids, instead of being about al -ien babies and stuff, it’s my trip lets,quadruplets...[But] I’m not havingtriplets. How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

LOS ANGELES: Luke Don aldopens his US PGA Tour seasonat the Northern Trust Open onThursday hoping he can repli-cate — or even improve on —the form that catapulted him toNo. 1 in the world in 2011.

The 34-year-old English -man’s remarkable consistencysaw him become the first play-er to top both the US andEuropean tour money lists inthe same year.

“I’m looking forward to —hoping to do — somethingvery similar to last year andeven build on it,” said Donald, who would still like to add thatfirst major title his resumelacks. “I’m very excited about

my game.”Donald is among 11 of the

world’s top 20 gathered for the$6.6 million tournament atRiviera Country Club, a par-71course nestled in the hills westof downtown Los Angeles andlong associated with golf andHollywood royalty.

Nicknamed “Hogan’s All ey”after the two Los AngelesOpens and the 1948 US Openwon here by Ben Hogan, thecourse exerts strong appeal totoday’s pros.

“I’ve played Riviera a lotover the years and it’s one ofthose classic old golf coursesthat I could never tire of play-ing,” said South African Ernie

Els. “Riviera is a real ball strik-er’s golf course.”

“Always excited to be hereat Riviera,” Donald agreed. “Ithink it’s one of the great classiccourses that we play all year.”

Donald finished second atRiviera in 2010, his third strai -ght top-10 finish in the event.

But he missed the cut herelast year as his first US tourna-ment of 2011 gave no hint ofthe stellar season to come.

“Maybe I was just a little bittournament rusty,” saidDonald, who jump-started hisseason the following week withhis victory at the World GolfChampionships Match PlayChampionship.

Donald will play the firsttwo rounds alongside Austra -lian Adam Scott, ranked eighthin the world, and AmericanNick Watney.

Scott will be teeing it up forthe first time in 2012. Duringhis extended break, the longestof his pro career between tour-naments, he had his trouble-some tonsils removed andreco nnected with family andfriends.

“It has a long time,” he said.“But it doesn’t feel that long agothat I was playing in Australia tobe perfectly honest.

“It goes by pretty quickwhen you’re having fun. But Ithink I needed it.”

LEEDS: Newly-installed Manly Sea Eaglescoach Geoff Toovey insists their WorldClub challenge clash with Leeds at theSuper League champions’ Headingleyground on Friday is just another game forhim. Toovey took over the reigning NRLtitle-holders in the Australian off-seasonafter Des Hasler was dismissed followinghis announcement he would be joiningthe Canterbury Bulldogs in 2013.

Hasler has since joined the Bulldogs ayear early with former assistant Tooveyleading Manly out in Leeds in a re-matchof the 2009 final the Sea Eagles won 28-20.

Nine of this year’s 20-man squad weremembers of the side that beat the Rhinosthree years ago and Toovey is adamantthey are more than ready to claim theirsecond World Club Challenge title.

“The game is not important for me butit’s definitely important for the players,”said Toovey, who played more than 200games in an 11-year career with Manly.

“It’s a great reward to take on the SuperLeague champions. The players havecome to challenge Leeds and represent theNRL while Leeds carry that burden of rep-resenting the Super League.

“We are very focused, the crowd will beagainst us obviously and the ground andthe conditions we are not used to, butthere’s no excuses, the best team will winthe game.”

Manly have, historically, been the teamfans of other Australia clubs love to hateand Toovey was well aware his side had notexactly carried the good wishes of theentire NRL community with them toEngland.

“We’d like to think that everyone isgoing to be behind us in Australia but obvi-ously that’s not going to be the case.

“Manly has always had the reputationof ‘which is your favourite team? Yourhome team and anyone who is playingManly’ but our supporter base is expand-ing. “So I think those days of the Manlyhaters are coming to an end and I just lovethe style of rugby league we are playingand I think that is attracting more support-ers every year.”

Leeds, seeking a record-equalling thirdWorld Club Challenge win, have plenty ofplayers with experience of playing in theone-off clash between England andAustralia’s top clubs.

“Sometimes it hinders ourpreparations but I can’t do any-thing about it,” the Russian

“I know how the Chinese aretraining and they work much

harder. If you compare them toThomas, he has many commit-ments in his media activities.

“The Chinese have restrictedtheir divers and I support themon this. I would recommend Tomto make not so many commit-ments to the media.”

Lin, a Harvard University eco-nomics graduate who was untak-en in last year’s NBA draft, was cutby Golden State and Houstonbefore grabbing a spot on theKnicks bench.

With Amare Stoudemireabsent following the death of hisbrother in a car crash and CarmeloAnthony sidelined by a groininjury, the Knicks turned to Lin on

an emergency basis and heresponded in amazing fashion.

“He’s the greatest story insports right now,” Knicks team-mate Jared Jeffries said of Lin. “Hewas five or six days from being cut

and now he is a catalyst for a teamthat’s playing as good as anybodyin the NBA.”

The Knicks would have had topay Lin for a full season or releasehim within a few days. Now they

have their first player to grace thecover of Sports Illustrated since1999. “He continues to impressevery night. Every game he playsbetter,” Jeffries said. “He doesmore and more to help us win bas-

ketball games. You can’t ask anymore of a kid coming into this sit-uation.

“Right now his confidence is atan all-time high and our confi-dence in him is just as high.”

Lin produced the best five-game starting debuts in modernNBA history, his averages of 23.3points and 7.4 assists surpassingsuch legends as Michael Jordan,Kobe Bryant, LeBron James andShaquille O’Neal, who tweeted hisLin love on Wednesday.

“Linderrella story of the year,”O’Neal said on Twitter. “jeremy linhas lingle handedly played lensa-tional lincredible I’m linpressed allhe does is Lin Lin Lin.”

NEW YORK: Film director andpassionate New York Knicks sup-porter Spike Lee has fired back atFloyd Mayweather’s commentsthat all the hype around JeremyLin is about his race and not hisbasketball skills.

Lee also spoke Wednesday onMSNBC about the global “Lin-san-ity” phenomenon that surroundsthe first US-born player ofTaiwanese and Chinese heritage, who has the most points of anyNBA player in his first five startssince 1976.

“Don’t try to explain it, dissectit,” Lee said. “We’re just in the mid-dle of it and enjoy it. Especially if

you are a Knick fan.“It’s a great American story. A

great American story.”Lin, a 23-year-old point guard

who was an economics major atHarvard, went undrafted by theNBA, was cut last December byGolden State and Houston, andwas seeing little playing time forthe Knicks.

But when Carmelo Anthonywas sidelined with a groin strainand Amare Stoudemire was absentfor a week after the death of hisbrother in a car crash, Lin receivedhis chance and made the most ofit.

After an already astonishing

run of leading the Knicks to fivewins in a row with precision pass-ing and dramatic drives to thehoop, Lin hit the winning three-pointer with half-a-second

remaining on Tuesday to defeatToronto. “Floyd Mayweather IHope You Watched Jeremy Hit TheGamewinning 3 Pointer With .5Seconds Left. Our Guy Can BALLPLAIN AND SIMPLE.RECOG-NIZE.” Lee posted on his Twitteraccount.

Mayweather had said the hypearound Lin was all because of hisAsian heritage. “Jeremy Lin is agood player but all the hype isbecause he’s Asian. Black playersdo what he does every night anddon’t get the same praise,”Mayweather said in a Twitter post-ing on Monday.

After criticism was heaped

upon him from other Twitterusers, Mayweather said his com-ments were meant as support forblack athletes. “Other countriesget to support/cheer their athletesand everything is fine. As soon as Isupport Black American athletes, Iget criticized,” Mayweather postedon Twitter. “Wow what a country.”

He later added, “I’m speakingmy mind on behalf of other NBAplayers. They are programmed tobe politically correct and will bepenalized if they speak up.”

MILAN: AC Milan all but booked theirplace in the Champions League quarter-finals with a swashbuckling performanceto thump hapless Arsenal 4-0 at the SanSiro on Wednesday.

A Kevin-Prince Boateng blockbuster, aRobinho brace and a penalty from ZlatanIbrahimovic gave the Italians their first winin seven Champions League clashesagainst English opposition while also end-ing a run of three straight home defeatsagainst Premier League teams.

It means the second round, second legat the Emirates in three weeks’ time shouldbe little more than a formality forMassimiliano Allegri’s players.

Not even the introduction of ThierryHenry in his final appearance beforereturning to New York Red Bulls couldinspire a surprisingly out of sorts Gunnersformation. And Arsenal manager ArseneWenger didn’t mince his words followingArsenal’s worst ever defeat in Europe.

“We were never in the game, we werevery poor both offensively anddefensively,” he said.

“It was shocking to see how we werebeaten everywhere, it was the worst per-formance in Europe by far. There was notone moment during the 90 when we werereally in the game.”

Despite their advantage, Allegriremained cautious over his side’s chances.

“We’ve not given a signal to otherteams, we’ve got a good advantage overArsenal and we have the possibility to getto the quarter-finals,” he said.

“We did well tonight but we must stillwait 90 minutes, it won’t be easy becausethey’ll have nothing to lose and will play acompletely different match.”

Any suggestions that Milan mighthave had an inferiority complex follow-ing their terrible run against the Englishwere shattered in a first half in which thehosts were composed and clinical on thecounter while the visitors were unsettledand error-prone. A lovely move fromMilan saw Luca Antonini chip the ball toIbrahimovic who teed up Urby
