When we talk aboutpollution the firstthing that comes toour mind is vehi-

cles letting out plumes ofsmoke. But many of us are notaware that the rising construc-tion activity and commercialestablishments contribute in noless measure to pollution levels.

Shockingly, Hyderabad isthe only City where there is noproper check on pollution lev-els, not to speak of unbridlednoise and air pollution kickedup by thousands of buildingsites spread across the City.Callous handling of buildingmaterials and lack of safetymeasures has been killing peo-

ple but the GHMC turns ablind eye!

Who to blame? Ask aroundand you draw a blank. TheConfederation of Real EstateDevelopers Association of India(CREDAI), Hyderabad, tooshrug off. “We are not con-cerned about the pollution lev-els, it’s the work of AndhraPradesh Pollution ControlBoard to check the pollutionlevels and take action. We don’thave special rules and regula-tions regarding this. The realestate industry does notincrease air, water, noise or landpollution,” said S Ram Reddy,CEO, CREDAI Hyderabad.

All construction sites gener-ate high levels of dust and noiseand they care not for the neigh-bours. Often work goes on tilllate night and disturbs the resi-dents in the locality. Despite thelaw that construction is not

allowed at night, there is noauthority for citizens to turn to.

Experts from the medicalfield say that air pollution canresult in serious health prob-

lems like loss of appetite, lungsand heart ailments and sleepingdisorders. “In the recent yearsthere has been a rise in thenumber of patients comingwith respiratory problems andthe major culprit is the increas-ing pollution. Problems includepulmonary stress, asthma, bronchitis and even cancer. Onan average one in eight sufferfrom such problems”, said DrHameer Singh, pulmonologist.

Shockingly, officials fromthe Andhra Pradesh PollutionControl Board say, “We don’thave a separate check for pollu-tion at a construction site orsmoke being emitted from vehi-cles used there. We have a com-mon check for air pollution lev-els. But yes the pollution levelsare always high near the con-struction sites,” said KVRamani, senior environmentalengineer, AP Pollution Board.

CREDAI credo:We don’t care

POLLUTION

We don’t have a sep-arate check for pollution at a con-struction site orsmoke being emittedfrom vehicles usedthere, but yes pollu-tion is high.

KV Ramani, AP Pollution Board

The apex body of pan-India developers and builders says pol-lution emanating from construc-tion sites is not its concern

Steep hike inrailwayparking feeSudeshna [email protected]

Railway works on its ownrules. Much etiquette isnot applicable, rue com-muters. They point out

that the hike in platform ticketsand parking lot were effectedwithout informing the public.

Even now, there is no noticeto inform the public that thehourly rent for car parking hasbeen raised to `30 from `20. Nordid the railway think it fit to ann -ounce the rise in platform ticketprices from `3 to `5.

“I decided to see off mycousins at the Secunderabad sta-tion at the last moment. I forgotto carry my purse but had `20 onme which was enough to buy fiveplatform tickets. But after wewent there I was informed that it’s`5 per ticket. The rise is not theissue but failure to inform thepublic is,” says Raj M, a market-ing professional.

Satender Kumar, station mas-ter says, “The hike was put intoeffect with the annual budget. Wehave implemented it since thelast two months. We have planswith the money generated. Soonwe will make new changes in thestation.” Another rail commuterasks, “When the train runs late byhours, who pays for the parking ?Should not the railway bear theextra expense?"

“It’s not the rise alone thatbites us,” Adithya T, a studentsays. “With the hike they hardlymake the situation better. Parkingis so congested that it is a risk tak-ing one’s vehicle in and taking itout is tougher,” he points out.

Vicky, manager of the park-ing, says the contracted amountwas higher this time. He had nochoice but to hike the price. Ascompared to last year this yearthe auction bid was thrice theprice. “We took on lease the landfor a higher price se we had toraise the rent. We need to recoverthe money we have invested, youknow,” he said.

TDP Krishna district presidentDevineni Uma Maheswara Rao hasalleged that the Gudivada MLA

Kodali Venkateswara Rao (Nani) was soldout for `30 crore offered by the YSRCongress and left the party that gave hima ticket and helped him become an MLAtwice.

Talking on Monday, Uma and other

leaders of the party from Krishna districthave alleged that Nani has betrayed theparty within a week of his meeting theparty chief N Chandrababu Naidu. Theyalso said that while the TDP has givenhim a respectable position he has puthimself on sale.

The government orderissued by the State gov-ernment to provide legalaid to four ministers of

the State cabinet seems to havelanded the Congress party introuble. The vexed GO categori-cally stated that the governmentwould provide financial help tofour ministers — Sabita IndiraReddy, J Geeta Reddy, KannaLakshminarayana, PonnalaLakshmaiah and DharmanaPrasada Rao — to avail legal help, leaving behind former exciseminister Mopidevi VenkataRamana Rao, who is now lodgedin Chanchalguda jail.

While some harsh critics ofCM N Kirankumar Reddy like for-mer minister P Shanker Raotermed it tantamount to encour-

aging corruption, oppositionparty leaders have said that theState has made Mopidevi ascapegoat in the whole issue.

In fact, PCC president BotsaSatyanarayana openly expressedhis displeasure over Mopidevibeing ignored by the CM to availlegal help from the State. He saidthat he would write a letter in hispersonal capacity to the CM andrequest him to extend the sameprivilege to Mopidevi also.

“This is not right. Mopidevishould also get legal support. Iwill write a letter to the CM

requesting him to extend supportto Mopidevi,” he said.

Mopidevi, also expressed hisunhappiness over being ignored. He expressed his displeasure tohis friend and minister for socialwelfare P Satyanarayana whenthe latter met him in jail onMonday. Mopidevi reportedlyasked the minister to convey hisfeelings to the CM for extensionof legal help to him as well.

Many BC organisations havealleged that the CM’s act of ignor-ing BC minister Mopidevi showsthat he hates the backward classcommunity. “This is a clear caseof feudalistic attitude of the CM.He wants to show that upperclass always rule. I think this isthe right time for BC to launchmassive fight for their rights,” BCleader in Telangana and presi-dent of Telangana Jyothiba BCwelfare association RSatyanarayana Rao said. He saidthat they would hold a brain-storming session.

It’s not only you — the citi-zens — who get a shockfrom various government

agencies. The mayor MohdMajid Hussain recently got ashock when he was handed anover 70-page default list ofproperty tax payers who owedthe corporation `840 crore!

What surprised him wasnot the list, but it containedinformation on how the gov-ernmental agencies owed thecorporation `300 crore, andmore, many bigwigs have shuttheir eyes at the dues. Butsoon, he was advised by theofficials who take it all in theirstride, to calm down. They toldhim half of the 12 lakh proper-ty owners don’t pay!

The mayor immediatelysprang to action. He told offi-cials to get ready for a specialdrive to wrest as much money

from private property ownersas possible. This year theGHMC needs more money inview of the beautification ithas to do to welcome theworld meet on biodiversity inOctober. “I told the officials toget at the private propertyowners first,” the mayor said. The list runs into thousands orelse the corporation wouldhave published it, officialsclarified. But the mayor is infavour of publishing thenames to shame them.

Meanwhile. the corpora-tion has undertaken a proper-ty reassessment to updateproperty tax. The prevailingtax rate is laughable. Some bighouse owners pay `160. “Whata sham!” said an official.

Half don’t pay, the otherhalf pay peanuts!

Indian middle-class, especial-ly the young and the middle-aged, are increasingly givingIMFL a miss and are going for

branded foreign spirits instead.Citing India as one the most sig-nificant growth drivers, variousmultinational liquor companiesare poised to invest hugely inmarketing, brand innovations, expand to new markets withinIndia and are managing theirportfolio as per the local needs.

Currently, the revenue fromthe alcoholic beverage market isestimated at `52,000 crore and islikely to reach about `2 lakh croreduring the course of the nextthree years, said the studyreleased by ASSOCHAM, a pre-mier trade body.

Data suggests that a majorityof the educated young in Indiaare becoming devotees of bac-chus — but of foreign bacchus —not the Indian variety. The studysays the sales of imported spiritsincluding the duty-free traveltrade in India is likely to cross the5 million cases mark and reachabout 550 lakh litres by 2015.

Growing at a compoundedannual growth rate (CAGR) ofabout 25 per cent, the importedspirits market in India is current-ly estimated at about 280 lakhlitres and about 3.1 million cases, according to a study, ‘India’semerging imported spirits mar-

ket’, says the Chamber study. The overall liquor consump-

tion in India is growing at about30 per cent CAGR and is likely toreach about 20,000 million litresin the next three years from cur-rent level of about 7,000 millionlitres.

“Growth of imported spirits inIndia is largely driven by thespurt in tendency amid young

Indian professionals andentrepreneurs to migrate fromlocal brands to internationalbrands,” said DS Rawat, secretarygeneral of ASSOCHAM whilereleasing the findings.

“With more number ofIndians travelling abroad forstudying and other professionalreasons, their fondness forimported liquor is also rising

which is certainly leading togrowth in the business as theyacquire taste for imported liquorand can afford to buy the expen-sive spirits from duty-free shopsabroad,” said Rawat.

“Besides, growth in the sectorhas also been fueled by risingincome levels, increasing youngpopulation, growing number ofworking women, increasing

media penetration and expand-ing exposure to western lifestyleamid people in the upper-middleincome group in India for whomserving expensive liquor reflectstheir lifestyle and status symbol.”

Wine consumption is achiev-ing the gender parity. India’s wineconsumption is likely to reacharound 14.7 million litres by theend of 2012 from around 4.6 mil-lion litres in 2008 registering agrowth of 35 per cent during thecourse of past four years. The per-cent of female wine connoisseursis growing by 10 per cent.

The vodka market alone inIndia is growing at about 25 percent annually and is likely toreach 10.2 million cases by theend of 2012 as vodka is emergingas a starting drink for the youth atmetros and tier II centres.

India’s youth go for foreign brands, because they don’t trust Indian-made foreign liquor any longer

Bonalu fest losing its sheen?Anubha K [email protected]

Frequent troubles inthe Old City seem tohave taken its toll onthe Bonalu celebra-

tions here. In the recentyears, the participation ofpeople from other commu-nities seems to havereduced drastically.

“Blame it on the com-munal riots or the differ-ences created by some self-ish politicos in the area, butin recent years, the numberof Muslim devotees inBonalu celebrations hasreduced,” said MaheshGoud, chairman of theMahankali Temple.

Hanumanth Rao, a resi-dent of Shalibanda who hasbeen watching Bonalu cele-brations since childhood, says, “The festival is cen-turies old and even theNizams offered prayershere. Muslims from the areaused to participate with thesame fervour every year. Iremember that one year, aMuslim was the potharaju. That is why the Old CityBonalu is known for its com-munity spirit.”

He added, “However, with changing times and the

worsening situation in thearea, things have changednow. The spirit of unity hasnow reduced drastically andnot even a handful ofMuslims participate in thefestival now. Many keeptheir distance in order tomaintain peace in the area.”

Old-timers from the areareminisce about how thefestival was celebrated bypeople from all communi-ties. “Akkanna MadannaMahankali temple in the Old

City was known for HinduMuslim unity through itsexistence. Bonalu is not apanchang-based festival; it’sa community festival wherepeople from all communi-ties worship Goddess Kali tokeep diseases and badthings away. The festival iscelebrated to maintainpeace and happiness in thecity. The celebrations at the400-year-old temple arepopular because this is theonly temple where people

from both the communitiescan join in,” said YounusKhan, a shopkeeper fromLaad Bazaar.

After the Bonalu festivi-ties at Golconda Fort andSecunderabad, it was timefor the Old City residents tocelebrate. The 11-day festi-val kicked off in the Old Cityon Sunday. The traditionalcelebrations started earlieron June 21 at Golconda Fort. There are three main tem-ples in the Old City where

the festival will be celebrat-ed; Akkanna Madanna tem-ple, Muthyalu temple inShah Ali Banda andMahankali temple at LalDarwaza.

The festival kicked offwith a mahabhishekam, kalasa sthapana and dwa-jarohanam. The other ritu-als that will be performedinclude Mathaji bhajan,Shakam bari alankara puja,Laksha kumkumarchana,Laksha pushparchana,Chandi homam, andThottela Uregimpu. Water wars as pre-dicted in novelsand films are not

fictitious. Go to Karkhana inSecunderabad, one of theoldest settlements inHyderabad. This season, three deaths in the areahave been attributed towater woes.

Coming under theSecunderabad CantonmentBoard (SCB), this localityhas just faced one of theworst water situations in theCity’s recent history. Theabject failure of the SCB toprovide water to the resi-dents is legendary. Here, youwill still see hand pumpsmarked 1852, which, to theircredit, worked for well overa century. But the new onesinstalled a few years agohave already conked off!

Water tankers and watertaps are the only means ofgetting water. But tankerswere hard to find this year. The desperate residentsresorted to installing illegalhand pumps and diggingborewells, which, moreoften than not, just throw up

only mud. “The entire laneof Karkhana Bazar buzzeswith women holding con-tainers on the day water isreleased or whenever atanker arrives,” says MohdNusrat, a resident.

When a tanker comes orwhen the SCB releases

water, the whole populaceof Karkhana assembles atthe supply points. Oftenquarrels break out; recently,a man died after a fight overthe water queue. In anotherinstance, two men died ofelectric shock when theywere trying to make electricconnections for the motorswithout permission andprecautions.

Residents are demand-ing immediate attention ofthe SCB before the situationgets any worse. Most of theborewells installed few yearsago remain non-functional.In addition, only a few watertaps work in the entire local-ity of hundreds of house-holds. Karkhana is sur-rounded by newer localitieswith gated communities, which have better access towater than the historic‘Untonka Karkhana’ (CamelCamp).

“We need at least twomore hand pumps and fourtap connections urgently,”

stressed A Ahmed, a socialworker from the area.According to him, one of thehand pumps needs repair or replacement. Besidesthis, setting up public watertaps at several places wouldhelp. Several representa-tions were made to the localleaders, including the MLA,but nothing has been done,

says Ahmed. When the issue was

brought to the notice of SCBCEO Bala Krishna, he wasnot surprised. “There is awater problem everywherein the City. Let me know theexact location, I shall try tosort out the issue with offi-cials from WaterworksDepartments”, said the CEO.

Participation of other communities in the celebrations seems to have reduced over the years

Large corporations areobsessed with leadershipbecause they know valueof it. They put their lead-

ers through constant leadershipdevelopment programmes, meetings to build leadership.

Unfortunately, the smallbusinesses do not talk aboutleadership because they are car-ried away with everyday activi-ties and operations all the time.It is important for them tounderstand and devote time onbuild leadership to take theirbusinesses bigger. Small busi-ness should put aside a part oftheir budget for mentors, con-sultants and trainers.

However, currently they arelooking these things once theycome across some serious prob-lem. They should consider it aspart of their operation costs. They should have great men-tors, board of advisors aroundthem for a better growth, saidKane Minkus, co-founder of theIndustry Rockstar System, USAand a multimillion dollarentrepreneur, who was in theCity with Jeff Slayter to give hisinspirational talk on“Transformational Leadership &Inspirational Entrepreneurship”.

The key thing that smallcompanies should primarilyfocus is on sales and marketingbut should also seriously look atleadership once they reach sizeof $1 million.

Leadership must becomekey conversation during thephase of $1-5 million size. These are very specific inflec-tion points where the businesshas to move from sales and mar-keting focus to leadership focus. The focus has to move structural

and scalability building after $5million, he said.

Talking about how leader-ship can affect a company, Kanesaid, entrepreneurship is allabout leadership and business-es rise and fall because of it.Every company is a direct reflec-tion of the CEO which meansthe leader’s beliefs, mindset, capabilities, identity, behaviourand the environment in whichhe exist will be directly reflectedin the business.

Large corporations mayhave group of leaders at variouslevels where as small organisa-tions may have one leader orfounder. If a person at any posi-tion is not confident about hisleadership capabilities thatdepartment will suffer in thecompany.

Leadership is amorphousand is very concrete. If thingsare not working, it is the fault of

leadership. Teams, products andemployees don’t fail but leadersdo. The level of accountabilitythe leader is willing to take isdirectly proportion to how suc-cessful the business will be.

Leadership resides in fiveareas such as vision, communi-cation, accountability, power toinfluence and building sustain-ability in the company. Manydoubt whether leadership canbe cultivated. Yes, it can. It isabsolutely necessary to takethings out of way which areblocking to become a leader. It isimportant people should con-nect to their own natural charis-ma. The world is accepting lead-ers as they are and the authen-ticity sells.

The business world is notexpecting one to become aGandhi but to be oneself and getin touch with natural leader-ship, he added.

ON A ROLL

Beginning Monday, asYadav junior proceeds ona four-day family vaca-tion at Melbourne, visit-

ing the Healesville Sanctuary andsmelling the roses at the WerribeeMansion, aides believe that hewould also be doing some stock-taking of his three-month tenurein the state.

In the state capital, politicalcircles are rife with discussionsthat how Yadav — hailed as therising crown prince of UP politicsnot so long ago — was fast slip-ping in public ratings and losingfavour with his party cadres.

This is after two major flip-flops — closure of all shoppingmalls by 7pm and the decision toallow legislatures buy cars worth`20 lakh from their Local AreaDevelopment (LAD) funds.

Senior BJP leader KalrajMishra, while refraining from apersonal attack on the 39-year-old CM, says the “rating of the SPgovernment is on a downslide”.

Vijay Bahadur Pathak, spoke -sman of the state BJP unit, wasmore vocal in his criticism ofYadav. Calling him a “roll back”CM, Pathak says Akhilesh Yadavhas “earned a sorry reputation forhimself”.

Even party insiders feel that aspiralling crime rate, pathetic lawand order and overzealous partycadres ready to claim the pie fortheir loyalty has sullied both —the image of the CM and the SP.

Rajendra Chaudhary, a closeaide of the chief minister and

party spokesman, however, saidthat in the first three months thedirection of the government hasbeen set.

“In the first three months, development schemes have beenrolled out and no corruption hastaken place in the state,”Chaudhary said.

SP chief Mulayam SinghYadav also defended his chiefminister son’s tenure and saidthat three months are too early todraw conclusions. He also refutedcharges that the government wasgoing soft on former chief minis-ter and BSP chief Mayawati.

During the Budget Session, the CM on the floor of theAssembly refused probes into thesale of 21 sugar mills by her atthrowaway prices and on hersplurging public money on herMall Avenue house.

“Try to understand that cor-ruption will not be tolerated bythe SP government. Probes areon... By acting in haste, we do notwant to send a wrong messagethat the government is involvedin vendetta,” Mulayam added.

Party insiders agree thatbesides the grim power scenario inthe state, the law and order is both-

ering the state government too. While the monsoon, an office

bearer of the SP says, mightlessen worries of the state gov-ernment on power front, the“public mood on law and order”was “more troubling.”

DGP Ambreesh Chandra Sha -rma admited that there is anurgent need to tie up “some loseends” on the crime scene. How -ever, he is thankful to his politicalbosses for “minimal interference”in transfers and postings of offi-cials in field.

In view of the sensitive rela-tionship with the SP, Congress

leaders are so far tight-lipped onthe CM’s performance, especiallyin the run-up to the crucial July19 presidential polls, but admit inprivate that the government had“fallen from grace sooner thanwhat they had expected”.

Founder of the City Monte -ssori School Jagdish Gandhi, whois believed to have close linkswith the CM, is however full ofpraise for him. “Rather than call-ing it the end of honeymoon, Ithink he has just started,” he says.

“He is accessible, he loveskids, is serious about educationand appears to be making sincereefforts to bring back the state tonormalcy,” he said.

Industrialist Kiron Chopra, who has had few interactionswith the chief minister, agreed. “Itis a little too early to come to con-clusions, I am sure he is makingefforts to create an industry-friendly and pro-investmentenvironment in the state,” thebusinessman said.

Politically, however, theseefforts do not seem to be payingdividends to the ruling party.

In the three months since theSP came to power, the party haslost the by-election in Maant(Mathura) where the CM person-ally canvassed for votes and theBJP made huge gains in therecent municipal corporationand urban local body polls.

The bureaucracy too feelsthat while Akhilesh Yadav has“matured fast”, he remains raw inhis three months of rule. IANS

MUMBAI: After Time magazine called PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh an “underachiever”,Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray Tuesday termedhim “politically impotent” and called for anationwide revolution.

Thackeray said people had been wonderingwhat underachiever actually means. “In our(Thackeri bhasha) language, it implies thecountry’s prime minister is ‘politically impo-tent’,” he said in an editorial in the party’smouthpiece Saamna.

Thackeray, however, clarified that any opin-ion by Time magazine does not mean a personbecomes big or small, since even that maga-zine is compelled to carry on its “business”.

Some time ago, the same magazine hadportrayed Gujarat Chief Minister NarendraModi as the “most hated” Indian politician.“But he was hated only by the anti-Hindutvaforces,” Thackeray claimed.

Referring to the Time article on ManmohanSingh, he said: “Until now, the domestic mediawas rapping on his head, now even the interna-tional media is kicking him.”

In these difficult times, Thackeray contend-ed that it was high time the prime minister andCongress chief Sonia Gandhi handed over thecountry to a person with a fighting spirit — “aninspiring person who can fight the corruption,

the economic woes, the terrorism, and otherforces inimical to the country’s interests”.

For this, Thackeray said, only the ShivSena’s “Shivrai” was capable of giving the rightdirection to the country.

“Is Maharashtra ready for it, especiallysince it is also being taken to the dumps by aManmohan Singh ‘copy’ (referring to, but with-out naming Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan). There is a need for a revolution fromMaharashtra to Delhi,” he declared, soundingthe bugle for the next assembly elections in thestate due in 2014. DILI, EAST TIMOR, ANDJAKARTA, INDONESIA: Notuntil she was at the deathbed of theman presumed to be her father didAlexhia Cordova da Silva’s life startto make sense.

Raised by an elite political familyin Jakarta, da Silva had enduredyears of hushed rumours about herdark, Melanesian features at socialevents. On the street, “slumdog” and“monkey” were regular taunts.

And then in his last breaths, herfather revealed the secret: She wasEast Timorese, snatched away fromher mother and father when she wasonly 24 days old.

From 1975 to 1999, Indonesiafought a brutal war to suppress EastTimor’s independence movementand control the former Portuguesecolony. A reported 183,000 diedfrom fighting, starvation and dis-ease during the war and humanrights abuses were widespread.

But this had little relevance to daSilva until her family bombshell hit.And at 19, she reacted as any angryand emboldened teenager might. She ran away from home, left herlaw degree and Islam in the dust andmade contact with the EastTimorese Prime Minister XananaGusmão via Facebook. He becamepersonally involved in locating herfamily. “It was like an electric shock,”says da Silva of first meeting hermother. “She told me she alwaysknew I would come home.”

With family connections in thebanned independence groupFretilin, da Silva’s illiterate parentssay they feared for their lives if theydidn’t sign a document handing overcustody of their daughter.

“They were under pressure,” shetells me in a café near her Jakartauniversity, “My mother said to me, ‘Iknew you’re were going to be asmart girl so I wanted you to have agood future, that’s why I gave you tosomeone rich.’ And OK, I can acceptthat.”

Educated abroad and blessedwith political connections that, somewhat ironically, led her back toher East Timorese family — da Silvais one of the lucky ones.

Some 4,000 children were trans-ferred from East Timor during the24-year occupation. Many of theIndonesian soldiers, civil servantsand religious organizations thattook in the children were motivatedby altruism, genuinely wanting tohelp. But some were treated as pseu-do-slaves, raised by soldiers whohad murdered their parents. Otherswere confronted with the unfamil-iarity of strict Islamic boardingschools. Many of the children sent toIslamic boarding schools inIndonesia were very young and frompoor and remote parts of the coun-try. In many cases, their parentswere coerced into handing themover on the promise they wouldreceive a good education.

Sjamsul Bahari's mother permit-ted him to be sent to an Islamicboarding school in Bandung, WestJava, in 1998. Nine years old at thetime, Bahari was able to remember

his mother and send her annual let-ters, but many others were tooyoung.

“Lots of the children were only 2or 3 years old, so they found it diffi-cult to tell who they were,” heexplains during a tense interviewoverseen by two East TimoreseIslamic leaders at Dili’s An NurMosque.

Getting an Islamic organizationto acknowledge that children werecontentiously removed from theirparents, forced to convert to Islam, and then shipped off to Indonesia isan undeniably fraught exercise. Theissue is even more sensitive becauseEast Timor is predominatelyCatholic.

But Bahari admits that inIndonesia, many of the EastTimorese were stressed and unhap-py. In the mid-1990s, he wrote to theorganization that had sent them, theNasrullah Islamic WelfareFoundation (Yakin) in Dili, for help. They never replied. No one helpedand no one was ever responsible forthe ones that ran away.

“That is the tragedy of it. In a lotof cases [the children] just disap-peared and nobody knows wherethey are,” writes Helene Van Klinkenin her recently published book,"Making Them Indonesian: ChildTransfers out of East Timor," whichoffers the first comprehensiveaccount of East Timor’s so-called"stolen children."

A secret military document sug-gested that soldiers should help pro-mote the transfer of children inorder to spread Islam in East Timorand that such “suggestions” weredifficult for parents to deny. DrKlinken also notes that the transferswere “conducted in a low-key,almost secretive manner” andalmost certainly would have raisedeyebrows if the children transferredwere from wealthy and influentialfamilies.

bucket" — or dies, rather — he will be leav-ing a strange and treasured inheritance for

his three adult children — his 10-foot crocodile,Charlene.

Casey, a sugar cane grower from Mackay in thetropical northern state of Queensland, has told theMurdoch media that:

"I am 50 and Charlie turns 50 next year so she willoutlive me. It got me thinking about what to do withher because she is not just some piece of furniture orantique vase. You can't just pop her on the mantel-piece and give her a good dusting every six months orso."

Charlene — or Charlie as the saltwater croc isknown to the family — has been with Casey for thepast 48 years, having been brought home by hisfather, Alf, after "her mother had been shot by ahunter."

The family almost had to give up the animal in1986 when she "accidentally" bit off Alf's hand afterhe returned from a fishing trip.

Then in November 2010, according to theQueensland Times, Casey was informed byQueensland's Department of Environment andResource Management (DERM) that the conditionsfor owning a crocodile had changed.

After his father had died, Casey had wanted tohave Charlene's permit transferred to his name but itwould cost him $10,000 in legal fees.

He would also be required to put up a secondfence around the enclosure Charlene lives in on thefamily's at their O'Connell River property, at a cost of$5,000.

"In the end DERM and I came to an agreement,"Casey told the Queensland Times.

"A local crocodile handler [Peter Basso] came for-ward and said he would also help me out with somemore formal training," he added.

Charlie, whom Casey refers to as his "little sister,"having grown up with her, has often accompanied thefamily on holiday.

Casey told the Murdoch press that the ongoingchallenges of keeping Charlene and his advancingage had forced him to think about the croc's future, and so write her into his will.

"It was fairly upsetting that I might have had toget rid of her," he said.

"She's a good pet, easier to keep then a dog or cat.She is quiet and doesn't bark at anyone. I try to haveas much contact with her as I can... She is a familyheirloom."

ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAYSo give Singh some time

Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray has ridiculed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh describing himas politically impotent. His jibe is based upon the Time magazine calling the PM an under-achiever. Their report says that Singh is not doing enough to reverse India’s slowing down

economy. “Voters too are losing confidence, as rising inflation and a litany of scandals chip awayat the government’s credibility,” the magazine says apart from listing a huge fiscal deficit and a

falling rupee as signs of Singh’s incompetency. Well, as the head of coalition government there’s noneed to say that Singh has limitations — having to deal with a coalition partner like Trinamul

Congress, Mamata Banerjee, is more than enough. Bal Thackery may rave and rant as he pleases, for his interests never crossed the borders of Maharashtra and he is known for punching under thebelt. As for Time calling Singh names, it may as well remember that their President Barack Obama

had called up Singh a week before the G-20 summit to confer on economic issues — mind you,Barry knows the people he mingles with. So give Singh some time to set things right.

IS IT ANOTHER OF Gabo’s miracles?

This is certainly a miracle,or is it another hoax? While Jaime Garcia

Marquez claims that his broth-er suffers from senile demen-tia, the director of the NewJournalism Foundation, creat-ed by Gabo himself refutesthis. As ardent followers of theliterary genius we cannot butbe happy with this develop-ment. Viva Gabo!

In 1977, the distinguished physicist LeonLederman and his colleagues at the FermiNational Accelerator Laboratory in the USbelieved that they were on the verge of

discovering a new elementary particle. An ele-mentary particle is a fundamental buildingblock of the universe and Lederman and histeam predicted that this sub-atomic particlewould have a mass of about 6.0 GeV or GigaElectron Volts, the units of mass used in parti-cle physics. They even decided to call it theUpsilon Particle, after the Greek LetterUpsilon (Υ) – but realisation came that thiswas a wrong call, and the non-existing parti-cle was promptly renamed ‘Oops-Leon!’

Leon Lederman is a Nobel Laureate andan important participant in the global race todiscover elementary particles: It was a racethat began after Sir J.J. Thomson discoveredthe electron in 1897, thus showing that JohnDalton’s 1803 theory that the atom was thebasic unit of matter was wrong. Since thenthere have been a string of discoveries of sub-atomic particles, some composite and someelementary. Many of these were first predict-ed by theory and when the evidence was pro-duced, the validity of the theory was con-firmed.

Based on the work of thousands of theo-retical and experimental scientists, modernscience has developed an idea of the universe:the universe is made up of 4% atoms and 20%dark matter & 76% dark energy that we cannotobserve. There are four fundamental forces inthe universe: the weak nuclear force, thestrong nuclear force, electromagnetism andgravity. The universe started with a big bangsome 14 billion years ago when all theseforces were unleashed. The universe contin-ues to expand.

The observable universe is made of 18fundamental particles: 6 kinds of quarks, 6kinds of leptons and 6 kinds of force carriers. These 18 different particles fit into two cate-gories: bosons, named after SatyendranathBose, which have a full integer spin and trans-mit force (photons and gluons) and fermions,

named after Enrico Fermi, which have aninteger spin and make up matter (electrons, protons and quarks).

This standard model explains many phe-nomena but there are many riddles too. Howare the four fundamental forces to be broughttogether in one single theory which canexplain everything? What is dark matterexactly? What happened at the time of the bigbang? When the big bang happened why didsome of the particles acquire mass while oth-ers did not?

In there were nothing that enabled mass, all the elementary particles would keep trav-elling at the speed of light and would notcome together and there would be no atoms, elements, planets or solar systems. In 1964,François Englert and Robert Brout fromBelgium and Peter Higgs from Scotland pro-posed that a boson which endowed mass toother particles would be the answer. Thisboson soon came to be called the Higgs bosonand is the most fundamental particle thatcould explain the universe to us.

At least six Nobel Prizes have been award-ed for work related to the Higgs boson so far,but Peter Higgs and his fellow theorists didnot themselves get it! That is set to changenow that the Higgs Boson has been detectedafter two years of observation as protons col-lided 40 million times a second for two yearsin the giant 27 km-long Large Hadron Collider

at the Centre Européen de Recherce Nucléaire(CERN) in Geneva. In an astonishing achieve-ment, scientists at CERN recreated the earlyconditions of the big bang and have 99.9%certainty that the particle exists!

Nearly twenty years ago, when the HiggsBoson was still an elusive particle, LeonLederman wrote that it was “so central to thestate of physics today, so crucial to our finalunderstanding of the structure of matter, yetso elusive.” He even called it the ‘God-damned particle’ because it was not to befound! Disastrously, he then had his second‘Oops-Leon!’ moment when he allowed hispublisher to call it the God Particle in the titlefor his 1993 best seller on the global search forthe boson.

Leon Lederman is himself an atheist andhe regrets the term, and Peter Higgs who is anatheist too, has expressed his displeasure, butthe damage has been done! The God particleis today the most popular name for the Higgsboson. If anything, the discovery of the Higgsboson and the confirmation of the StandardModel of the Universe make God even moreunnecessary to explain the universe. In theuniverse are inscribed laws by which the bigbang was initiated and the functioning of theuniverse sustained. Since we have the Higgsboson we do not need God anymore! If everthere was a Godless or an atheist particle, it isthe Higgs boson!

It’s the Atheist Particle, actually

Three oil spills in a monthisn’t the track recordAlberta wanted while ped-

dling a major tar sands pipelineto Americans.

The spills have the provin-cial government and the oilindustry scrambling to controlthe damage to both the environ-ment and their credibility.

As many as 400,000 gallonsof oil have leaked in three sepa-rate incidents from the end ofMay to the end of June. Theworst has been a pipeline rup-ture near Sundre in centralAlberta in mid-June, when some132,000 gallons spilled into theRed Deer River and tainted areservoir that provides drinkingwater to thousands of people.

The spills come as theAlberta and federal govern-ments are lobbying for USapproval of the KeystoneXLpipeline, which would transportup to 900,000 more barrels ofAlberta’s tar sands oil a day toUS refineries in the Gulf ofMexico.

Both governments are alsopushing to build the NorthernGateway pipeline. That wouldbring tar sands oil to a proposedsupertanker port on the Pacificcoast of British Columbia, andfrom there to markets in Asiaand the United States. Thepipeline would be built byEnbridge, which owns a pump-ing station where one of theAlberta spills occurred.

The proposed pipelinesalready face determined opposi-tion from environmentalists onboth sides of the border. Theydenounce Alberta’s massive tarsands development — bitumencollected from open pit minesthat destroy huge tracts offorests, produce millions of gal-lons of toxic sludge and increasegreenhouse gas emissions — as“dirty oil.” The Alberta spillsgive opponents further ammu-nition to describe pipelines asunsafe, and government over-sight as lax. “When it comes topipelines the question is not ifthey will spill but when they willspill and create the next ecologi-cal disaster,” argues MikeHudema, of GreenpeaceCanada. We have seen companiesallocating huge bud-gets to external com-

munication and devising strate-gies for strengthening customerrelations. However, successfulcompanies are the ones whichconsistently work towardsimplementing the best prac-tices in employee relations.

Internal public relations is aspecial PR discipline whichconcentrates on enhancingcompanies’ relationships withthe employees by facilitatinggood communication amongthe management and theemployees, boosting theirmorale and giving them theright information at the righttime. People in organisationscommunicate, irrespective oftheir designations and the morewe keep them engaged, the bet-ter it is for the success of theorganisation. An engagedemployee is one who isenthusiastic about work, andthus will act in a way that fur-thers their organisation’s interests.

And why is it important tofocus on internal PR? Becauseemployees are the main brandambassadors of your organisa-tion and it is important to keep them abreast with compa-ny’s objective and the vision. There are several ways to keep employees engaged withthe organisation/brand. Tobegin with, communicatethrough emails and forums.Being transparent also earns alot of respect from employees.

Employee newsletter is alsoan effective method of motivat-ing and engaging employees.Featuring employee columns, highlights of the organisation, employee achievements, etcworks very well as an internalPR tool. With the advent ofsocial media, tools likeFacebook, Twitter, Linkedin andYouTube are popular employeeengagement mediums. Thesechannels allow for innovativeways of communicating withemployees, more so becauseeach one of us are hooked on tothese mediums.

Events aimed at involvingemployees helps in keepingthem motivated. Especially ifevents are organised with asocial objective, CSR as theysay. These initiatives not onlymotivate employees, but alsoprovide them a deeper meaningto life. As it is rightly said that ahappy employee means ahappy customer. Mrinal Gupta has justfinished five yearsin her job. While allher colleagues

clamour for a treat, she’s secret-ly miserable. At 25, this is herfirst and only job, havingjumped into it straight after col-lege. As a Business Partner whoalso handles HR and communi-cations portfolios, she carvedherself a niche in the MNC sheworks in. And, takes home a paycheque that’s best in the mar-ket. But her coveted profile isalso her curse. No other compa-ny in the city or anywhere, offers her this choice of respon-sibilities. Quite simply, her “loy-alty” is really, her fear to leave. “Idon’t think I’ll ever find any-thing like this anywhere. Sowhether there’s growth or not, whether I like it or not, I have nochoice,” she rues.

Mrinal is not alone.Contrary to popular assump-tions, many youngsters aredefying the job-hopping routeand are staying put at a place, focussing their energies insteadon climbing up the ladder.

Vishal Sonar has been aSenior Analyst with Deloitte,Hyderabad for over three yearsnow. Resisting lucrative offers,he has opted to carve a niche forhimself in his present companyand hopes to become a manag-er in the next few years. He says,“More and more people are nowstaying back at their current

jobs because they have realisedthat companies too reward loy-alty. For me, it’s about securityand good work culture. That is agreat combination for thosewho seek long-term innings inthe corporate world. There isnothing better than the feelingof working with a ‘secure’organisation.”

Industry experts usuallyobserve that there is a high

attrition rate among recentgraduates and entry-levelemployees, who change jobs asquickly as they change theirclothes. But even that too isslowly changing.

Sober Emanuel, a

Transaction Risk Investigator isan example. Having been withAmazon for two years now, heintends to stay put for a while. Not one to be distracted bysuperficial gratifications, hebelieves that a good work atmo-sphere takes precedence over abetter salary. Emmanuel says,“Good colleagues and a goodboss are a great reason why I amin the company. Perhaps I couldearn better if I go to anotherorganisation, but I choose to behere as the environment is per-fect for me to be my best. Thereis no way I am going to testunknown waters just to earnbetter, and realise I have takenthe wrong decision.”

Vijay Ramanan, who hasjust moved from a start up to acity-based MNC, says thatthere’s always the two kinds ofpeople, “the rolling stones” and“the growing roots.” While headmits growing roots is the cur-rent trend, he is also quick topoint out that longevity shouldnot be confused with loyalty. “Let’s be honest, it’s not for thelove of any company that westay. At the end of the day, eachof us has our own agenda. Andthe current market is not thebest time to make jumps. Sothat explains the status quo.But that said, there’s anincreased awareness amongyoungsters, that if you want toget to the top of the game, youhave to know your field well andthat takes time. Staying andmoving, it’s all a matter of strat-egy,” he concludes.

Great boss, perks and benefits, jobsatisfaction or simply security,

whatever their reasons might be,today’s professionals choose

Riya was walking downthe road when shesuddenly lost her bal-ance and fell down.

This wasn’t the first timewhen this had happened. As achild, the doctor hadinformed her that hers was acase of flat feet. But luckily itwasn’t a serious case thatrequired surgery.

Problems such as flat feet, knock knees, Pigeon toes andbow legs though in most casesdoes not have a major impacton a person’s active life, manytimes it may cause excessivepain and may require surgery.

Flat feetFlat feet is a condition inwhich the arch of the foot col-lapses. Dr H Kalyan Kumar, consultant, department oforthopaedics, ManipalHospital explains, “The nor-mal foot has supporting arch-es on the medial and lateralside. This can be seen with thehuman footprint in which themedial side of the foot doesnot touch the ground. Thiscondition is common amongwomen as well as childrenand neonates.”

Dr N Somasekhar Reddy, consultant orthopaedic sur-geon, Apollo Hospital adds,“Flat feet is a problem thatexists in 1:3 children. It maybe on either foot. This implies

that it is not necessary thatthe problem should exist inboth feet. There is usually adegree of variation when itcomes to flat feet; even if it isslightly collapsed or com-pletely collapsed, both areconsidered as cases of flatfoot.”

Dr Somasekhar says, “Anormal variation need notinterfere in the person’s abili-

ty to walk or play sports. Onlya small percentage of thoseaffected by flat feet may bedue to some pathological reason. These reasons couldinclude neurological prob-lems, problems since birth, bone deformation and mus-cular dystrophy. Bone defor-mities refer to conditionssuch as those in which theone or two bones may getfused thereby making it difficult for them to moveindependently.”

Dr Somasekhar adds thatwomen may also develop flatfeet at the age of 40 or 50. Thearches may collapse due toobesity. If the obesity is notcontrolled it may be painful.

These patients are advisedminor shoe modifications or exercise.

TreatmentDr Somasekhar says, “In regu-lar cases we usually reassureparents that it isn’t much of aproblem. Sometimes minorshoe modifications areadvised. For certain casessurgery is advised. Surgerycan be done either before thechild attains puberty ( 9-12years of age) or when thechild starts to develop adultsize bones( age 16 years andabove).”

Talking about treatmentDr Kalyan says that when itcomes to adults, arthrodesis(a procedure to fuse thejoints) is advised while forchildren medial arch supportsystems are advised.

Knock knees, bow legsDr Kalyan explains, “clinicallytermed as Genu Valgum, knock knees occurs due tooutward bending of the tibiabone resulting in both kneejoints coming together. Thisusually occurs due to a vita-min D deficiency resulting inrickets. Bow legs on the otherhand is clinically termed asGenu Varum. Here the legs arebowed at the knee joint.”According to Dr Somasekhar,“Cases of knock knees andbow legs are rarely seen. Theyused to exist 30-40 years agowhen malnutrition used to becommon. If it occurs now, weneed to look at other reasons.

If for example a 13-year-old isdiagnosed with knock kneesand a kidney problem is theissue, that can be treated butthe bent in the knees cannot. In such a case we will requireto realign the bones with thehelp of a surgery.”

Talking about the condi-tions Dr Kalyan explains thatknock knees is commonamong adolescents and chil-dren. Bow legs on the otherhand are common inosteoarthritis of the kneejoint and effects elderly withjoint pains. The treatment forbow legs could be either hightibial osteotomy or joint replacement.

Pigeon toesPigeon toes is a condition inwhich the toes point inwardswhen a person walks.

Dr Somasekhar says,“When we are in the womb weall have pigeon toes. Theyusually become normal by thetime the child reaches twoyears of age. The problemoccurs only when the childstarts to walk. By the time thechild reaches the age of 8-9, ifit is still prominent it maycause the child to trip or havedifficulty in walking.”“Rheumatoid arthritis caus-ing tethering and contractureof tendons is a commoncause,” mentions Dr Kalyan.Complete recovery from surg-eries usually takes aroundthree months. but again treat-ment is usually not requiredunless it is interfering in thepersons day-to-day activities.

PROBLEMS SUCH AS FLATFEET, KNOCK KNEES,PIGEON TOES AND BOWLEGS IN MOST CASES DONOT HAVE A MAJORIMPACT ON THE PERSON’SLIFE BUT MAY CAUSE PAINAND INCONEVENIENCE

From your clothes to the way you walk, everything comes together to createyour appearance. But unsteady gaitand problems such as flat feet, knockknees, bow legs and pigeon toes canalso cause many long-term inconveniences

World’s firstanti-obesityshotpromising

WASHINGTON: The world’s firstanti-obesity vaccine has shownpromising results in boostingweight loss, according to a study.

Keith Haffer from BraaschBiotech LLC, south Dakota, whodeveloped the vaccines in two ver-sions JH17 and JH18, derived from apeptide hormone somatostatin, tested them in two groups of dietinduced obese male mice, and com-pared with a group of mice thatreceived saline injections.

Somatostatin inhibits the actionof growth hormone (GH) andinsulin like growth factor (IGF1),both of which increase metabolismand result in weight loss.

Obesity and obesity related dis-ease is a growing health issueworldwide. Mice in all groups hadbeen fed a high fat diet for eightweeks prior to the study and contin-ued to eat the same food for theduration of the six week study. Thevaccinations were administeredtwice at the start of the study fol-lowed by a booster vaccination onday 22, the Journal of AnimalScience and Biotechnology reported.

Four days after the first injectionof modified somatostatin, the vacci-nated mice had a 10 per cent dropin body weight (not seen in themice receiving saline shots), said auniversity statement.

Later, results showed that bothvaccines induced antibodies tosomatostatin and significantlyreduced body weight, sustaining thelower body weight, without affect-ing normal levels of the growth hor-mone IGF1, or insulin levels.

“This study demonstrates thepossibility of treating obesity withvaccination,” Keith explained.“Treatment of human obesity with vaccination would providephysicians with a drug and surgical free option against theweight epidemic.”

Braasch Biotech LLC is a pri-vately held company that special-izes in the development of bio phar-maceutical vaccine products for thehuman and veterinary health caremarkets. Specifically, Braasch hasdeveloped the world first anti-obesi-ty vaccine.

Colitis is an ongoing digestivedisease. The main symptom of

the disease is swelling of the colon.Other symptoms include: highamounts of pain, tenderness in theabdomen, depression, large amountof weight loss, fatigue, and other, more severe symptoms. Colitis istreated through the use of antibiotics if it is found early, orsurgery if it is caught too late. Colitis can have many differentcauses, including; infections, including those caused by a virus, parasite, and food poisoning due to bacteria, inflammatory dis-orders (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), lack of bloodflow (ischemic colitis) and past radiation to the large bowel.

The lining of the stomach is a rather unique feature. Thestomach is essentially an enlarged area of intestines turned

into a bag. The stomach lining is responsible for secreting sub-stances used in digestion, and for protecting the rest of thebody from the highly acidic environment of the stomach. Somepeople are surprised to learn that the lining of the stomach isactually highly wrinkled in a series of structures known as rugalfolds. As the stomach fills, these folds flatten out, allowing thestomach to expand. Rugal folds allow the stomach to be flexi-ble while keeping it strong so that it will not rupture, althoughif someone eats enough food, it is in fact possible to cause thestomach to break. The stomach lining is replaced every three tofour days. If you didn’t, the strong acids your stomach uses todigest food would also digest your stomach.

Dogs may protect babiesfrom some infectionsWASHINGTON: Babies whospend time around pet dogshave fewer ear infections andrespiratory ailments than thosewhose homes are animal-free,said a study released on Monday.

The study, published in theUS journal Pediatrics, did notsay why but suggested thatbeing around a dog that spendsat least part of its day outdoorsmay boost a child’s immune sys-tem in the first year of life.

Cats, too, seemed to conveysome protection to babies, though the effect observed wasweaker than with dogs.

The research was based on

397 children in Finland whoseparents made diary entries eachweek recording the state of theirchild’s health during the infant’sfirst year, from nine weeks to 52weeks of age.

Overall, babies in homeswith cats or dogs were about 30per cent less likely to have respi-ratory infectious symptoms —which included cough, wheez-ing, rhinitis (stuffy or runnynose) and fever — and abouthalf as likely to get ear infec-tions. “If children had dog or catcontacts at home, they were sig-nificantly healthier during thestudy period,” said the study led

by experts at Kuopio UniversityHospital in Finland.

The most protective associa-tion was seen in children whohad a dog inside at home for upto six hours a day, compared tochildren who did not have anydogs or who had dogs that werealways outside.

“We offer preliminary evi-dence that dog ownership maybe protective against respiratorytract infections during the firstyear of life,” said the study.

“We speculate that animalcontacts could help to mature

the immunologic system, lead-ing to more composed immuno-logic response and shorter dura-tion of infections.”

The improvement was sig-nificant, even after researchersruled out other factors thatcould boost infection risk, suchas not having been breastfed, attending daycare, being raisedby smokers or parents with asth-ma, or having older siblings inthe household.

In addition to having less fre-quent ear infections and respira-tory infections, babies near dogs

tended to need fewer courses ofantibiotics compared to thosewho were reared in pet-freehouseholds, it said.

Previous research has shownconflicting results, with somestudies finding no benefit foryoung children being aroundfurry pets and others findingthat animal contact appears tooffer some protection. The studyauthors said their research dif-fers from previous analysesbecause it focuses solely on thefirst postnatal year and does notinclude older children. AFP

BABIES IN HOMES WITHCATS OR DOGS WERE ABOUT30 PER CENT LESS LIKELYTO HAVE RESPIRATORYINFECTIOUS SYMPTOMS LIKECOUGH, WHEEZING, RHINITIS(STUFFY OR RUNNY NOSE)AND FEVER AND ABOUTHALF AS LIKELY TO GETEAR INFECTIONS.

WASHINGTON: Bugs caus-ing serious urinary tractinfections stay ahead of theimmune system by filchingcopper to prevent the metalfrom being used againstthem, says a study.

Copper has been knownas a potent weapon againstinfection for centuries.Blocking this thievery with adrug may significantlyimprove patients’ chances ofwarding off infections, according to WashingtonUniversity School ofMedicine researchers.

“While some patients areable to clear these infectionswithout issue, in others theinfection persists or recursdespite antibiotic therapy,”says senior study author JeffHenderson, assistant profes-sor of medicine and ofmolecular microbiology atWashington.

“In some cases, the infec-tion spreads to the kidney orthe blood and becomes lifethreatening. We’ve beeninvestigating what’s differentabout the bacteria that causethese more trouble someinfections,” Henderson said.

Scientists have known foryears that E. coli makes amolecule called yersini-abactin that takes iron fromhost cells. The bacteria need the iron to grow andreproduce.

Researchers placedyersiniabactin in urine sam-ples from healthy patients. They found the moleculebound iron as expected butalso picked up copper. Next, they conducted the sameanalysis in samples from uri-nary tract infections, treatedat the University ofWashington in Seattle.

How to play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in acrossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will con-tain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

DAYS TO GO

Arelay baton is carrie-d by each runner an-d must be passed wi-

thin a 20 m changeover bo-x which extends 10 m oneither side of each 100 mmark. Another line is mark-ed 10 m further back, mar-king the earliest point atwhich the outgoing runner

may begin. Transferring ofthe baton in this race is ty-pically blind. The outgoingrunner reaches a straightarm backwards when theyenter the changeover box,or when the incoming run-ner makes a verbal signal. The outgoing runner doesnot look backwards, and it

is the responsibility of theincoming runner to thrustthe baton into the outstre-tched hand, and not let gountil the outgoing runnertakes hold of it. Runnerson the first and third legstypically run on the insideof the lane with the batonin their right hand, while

runners on the second andfourth take the baton intheir left. Polished handov-ers can compensate for alack of basic speed to som-e extent, and disqualifica-tion for dropping the ba-ton or failing to transfer itwithin the box is common, even at the highest level.

4X100MRELAY,4X400MRELAY: Each ofthe four athletes

in the team must run with abaton in his hand, passing iton to the next athlete in theteam until the final athletecrosses the finishing line. Eachathlete runs one 100m leg ofthe track. The changeover isthe crucial point in the Relayrace. In case of the 4x400mrelay, the distance run by eachathlete is 400m. The key is forboth athletes to be running atspeed while passing the batonwithin the defined zone.

Competition formatThe format is same for boththe events, the only thingthat varies is the distancecovered by each athletes in

the respective events. Whilethe each athlete covers 400meters in the 4x400m relay,In the 4x100m relay, everyathlete has to cover a dis-

tance of 100 meters. Both thecompetitions start withheats. The number of heatspresent as well as the num-ber of teams which progressto the next round dependson the number of teamscompeting. In each heat thebest-placed teams gothrough, as well as a setnumber of the fastest losingteams across all the heats. The following rounds run onthe same format, until eightteams qualify for the final. The draw to determinewhich heat teams run in isdecided by their initial seed-ings (based on previous per-formance) for the firstround, and then their perfor-mances after that. Thisensures that the highestseeded teams are not drawnin the same heat.

Keys to successA good start for the first ath-lete is vital. The winningteams also pass the baton inthe most efficient manner –with both athletes maintain-ing as near to top speed aspossible. An athlete whostarts running too early riskshaving to slow down again orrun out of the changeoverzone, and an athlete wholeaves it too late losesmomentum

Breaking the rulesAlthough it is not againstthe rules to drop the baton, crucial time is lost picking itup, and if in doing so oneteam obstructs anotherteam, they are disqualified. The baton must also bepassed within the designat-ed zone.

Anchor: The last runner ina relay race.Breakline: Anarc across the track denot-ing the point where runnersmay leave their original laneand use any part of thetrack, which is normally theinside lane. Crouch start: The crouchedposition all sprinters mustassume before starting arace.Changeover: The passingof the baton from one run-ner to the next.

TUESDAY, JULY 10, 201232The games people playPlaying FieldLONDON: McLaren are relyingon major upgrades scheduled forthe German Grand Prix toreignite their world title chancesafter failing to match the pace ofrival teams at Sunday’s BritishGrand Prix.

McLaren duo Lewis Hamiltonand Jenson Button could onlymanage eighth and tenth respec-tively at Silverstone and were along way off matching the laptimes set by frontrunners RedBull and Ferrari.

McLaren boss MartinWhitmarsh admitted it was nowleft to the team to react positivelyand pinned the team’s hopes ona significant upgrade packagescheduled for Hockenheim intwo weeks time to get them backon track.

“We weren’t quick enough, period,” said Whitmarsh.

“It is always disappointing ifyou are not competitive and cer-tainly at the end of the race wewere not, and through no fault ofthe drivers - both of them did agood job.

“We’ve got a decent, bigger, more visible upgrade package forGermany and we’ve got to deliverthat and make that stick. It’s thesame old game, we have got todevelop the car, and we have gotto make sure we use the tyresbetter.”

Whitmarsh added that he washappier with the team’s improved

consistency and pit stops, whichhave blighted their race chanceson several occasions this season, but underlined that ultimatelytheir car was just not fastenough.

“The average of all three pitstops was sub three seconds, which is something we havebeen working on,” he said.

“But fundamentally, good pitstops, a good couple of drivers, solid drives, bad qualifying, butno events upon which we couldcapitalise. Just not quick enoughis the school report.”

The 54-year-old also playeddown rumours that 2008 cham-pion Hamilton, whose contract isup for renewal at the end of theseason, had been affected by theteam’s slump in form and wasconsidering a move to a rivalteam.

Whitmarsh suggested that the27-year-old, now fourth in thetitle-race and 37 points behindchampionship leader FernandoAlonso of Ferrari, would be ableto overlook the team’s currentslump.

“I think he is smarter thanthat” said Whitmarsh, “and heknows that racing is highs andlows. This hasn’t been one of thehighs this weekend, four weeksago it was a different situation, two weeks’ time it could be a dif-ferent situation again. He knowsthat, I know that.” AFP

LONDON: South Africawicket-keeper MarkBoucher’s hopes of featuringin the upcoming Test seriesagainst England were put onhold after he suffered apotentially career-ending eyeinjury on Monday.

The 35-year-old, who hadhinted this could be his finalcampaign before retirement, was hit in the face when a bailricocheted off the stumpsafter Gemaal Hussain wasbowled by Imran Tahir duringthe first day of the Proteas’tour opener against Englishcounty Somerset at Taunton.

Boucher, as would beexpected for leg-spinnerTahir, was standing up to thestumps, but he was wearing acap rather than a helmet.

After treatment on thefield, Boucher was helped offwith blood coming from hisleft eye and taken to hospital

His place behind thestumps was filled by AB deVilliers, who has kept wicketin international matches forSouth Africa.

Were Boucher to featurein all three Test this series, hewould reach the coveted 150-mark but at the close of playSouth Africa team managerDr Mohammad Moosajeesaid that was unlikely.

“I don’t think he will be

ready for the first Test (at TheOval starting on July 19), if theseries, but I would like to waitfor the information thesurgery gives us.”

Moosajee, explaining the

extent of the damage done toBoucher, added: “It is a signif-icant injury.

“Mark sustained a directblow to the left eye, whichresulted in a laceration to the

white part.“It is what we call an eye-

ball rupture.“The ophthalmic surgeon

had a look at him at theAccident and Emergency Unitand decided that he neededto undergo exploratorysurgery to identify the extentof the damage.

“He will need a generalanaesthetic so there has to bea six-hour gap since he lastate a meal. That means theoperation will be performedat around 7pm (1800GMT).

“After the operation wewill talk to the surgeon again. With eye injuries one cannotmake predictions.

“From a medical point ofview a lot depends on whetherthere is damage to the retina, which allows us to see andfocus. We won’t know aboutthat until after the surgery.

“The surgeons will be ableto give us a better indicationof the damage after the oper-ation. Then it will take 48 to72 hours for the swelling tostart going down,” Moosajeeadded.

Boucher has been a main-stay of the South Africa sidefor 15 years, appearing in 147Tests and becoming the firstwicket-keeper to take 500catches in Test cricket; he hasalso scored five hundreds. AFP
