In a sensational twist to theAP Minority FinanceCorporation scam, theinvestigating state CID, isplanning to question ace

cricketer Saurav Ganguly. Theprobing police will soon issue anotice to Ganguly, to summonhim for questioning.

The ‘Prince of Kolkata’ wasthe brand ambassador to the‘One Card One Nation’ floatedby a Hyderabad IT companyowned by Sai Kumar. Hoardingsand posters with Gangulyproudly displaying the card hadbeen prominently put up atmany vantage points of the City. The card was initially to be inau-gurated by President PranabMukherjee this month-end butboth the inauguration andGanguly’s publicity plans havebeen withdrawn since the com-

pany came under the CID scan-ner.

The new venture waspromising banking customersrelief from the tedium of carry-ing several cards for differentservices with one smart card thathas all the services fused.

The scam involved fraudu-lent withdrawal of deposits andchannelling it to buy largeswathes of plots. The case sayssome 140 acres of land in KotturMandal of Mahbubnagar districtwas bought in this manner byKumar and his associate Anwar

Chatti. Though the initial sum ofscam is estimated at `45 crore, later investigation proved that itcould go far higher.

Postnoon has learnt that it wasnot Ganguly’s ambassadorialstint alone that prompts thepolice to quiz him. It is based onSai Kumar’s revelations duringinterrogation that he was close toGanguly before the cricketer washired.

The probing officials drop ahint that there is more than thatmeets the eye. Ganguly hadattended the initial function onlaunch of One Card One Nationat a City hotel on August 26.Kumar has reportedly admittedthat he had paid Ganguly `20lakh in cash and `80 lakh was tobe paid by cheque.

Sai Kumar was planning big.He had in his mind a franchiseeof the project in every city associ-ating famous names to cash in ontheir popularity.

Under fire from the Hinducommunity and the pro-right political parties, the

crime control station and SouthZone police have formed sixspecial teams exclusively to lookinto the mystery of a spate of

temple thefts which neverbefore happened.

So far, the teams have pickedup 60 ‘specialists of templethefts’ in police history but no

definite clue has so far emerged. The nearest the police reached isthe proposition that one offend-

er, Ram Babu of Nacharam, onwhom some 30 temple breakingcharges have been framed in the

past is missing from the City.Police have a faint hope that ifthey track him down there ishope of making a break.

But the police are alsoinspecting a conspiracy theory.

There is a belief that the sud-den surge in temple thefts isintended to arouse the feelingsof a particular communitywhich could then target theother prominent community.

This would disturb commu-nal balance and the City wouldgo up in flames. There is also anunproven theory of insiders’involvement. At least in somecases, police suspect the templefunctionaries’ complicity as apossible cause.

It was at the instance of theCity police commissionerAnurag Sharma that the policehave formed the teams and ded-icated themselves to nail downthe culprits.

Teams formed to nab temple thievesCity police have buckled up to pick up those involved in the recent spate of templethefts and are examining various theories. In the wake of the raging con-

troversy over the Telugu movieDenikaina Ready, both the war-ring parties — Brahmins and themovie makers — appearedbefore the State Human RightsCommission on Thursday andlodged complaints.

While the city BrahmanaSangham lodged a complaintwith the SHRC alleging that thefilm producer Manchu MohanBabu’s followers chased andattacked protesting Brahminsviolently, the film’s hero ManchuVishnu lodged a counter com-plaint alleging that theBrahmana Sangham leadersattacked his residence at FilmNagar in Jubilee Hills onWednesday night. There wastension around the SHRC officefor some time as both the partiesarrived there at the same time.

Raising slogans againstMohan Babu and his son Vishnu, the Sangham leaders demandedthat the screening of the moviebe stopped. The SHRC directedthe police commissioner toinquire into the incident. NSS

Security lapse in temple?Last year we had reported how the

Lord Venkateshwara temple inBanjara Hills had been broken into andsilverware weighing 14 kgs had beenstolen. The lack of police force forpatrolling duties was being consideredas a possible cause. In spite of therepeated temple thefts, steps have notbeen taken to provide additional security at places of worship till date.

When we talk aboutState Cabinet min-isters, one namethat stands out is

that of K Parthasarathi. Thisname does not require anyintroduction in AP asParthasarthi is known as a min-ister with multiple portfolios.

He is currently holding fourportfolios. These portfoliosinclude Intermediate and sec-ondary education, APResidential Educational Society,Government Examinations andExcise Department.

Among these departmentsthree portfolios — Intermediateand Secondary Education andExcise Department — are someof the most important portfoliosin the State. While the first twodepartments play a crucial rolein moulding the lives millions ofstudents of the state pursuingSSC and IntermediateEducation every year, the excisedepartment is one of the leadingrevenue earning department ofthe State.

Parthasarthi is well knownfor his exemplary handling ofthe issue pertaining toIntermediate Second YearPhysics Paper this year. About1.45 lakh students could notclear the exam.

He not only handled theissue successfully in the wake ofhuge protests from parents andstudents community but alsoensured that the students whofailed in the physics paper tookan advance supplementaryexam to pursue their highereducation in engineering andmedicine courses.

His adept handling of theissue pleased CM N KiranKumar Reddy so much so thatwhen former excise ministerMopidevi Venkata Ramana wasremoved from his cabinet fol-lowing his arrest by CBI, the CM

did not hesitate to handover thecrucial excise department to hisabled colleague Parthasarathi. In an interview with PostnoonParthasarathi spoke on variousissues related to his depart-ments and revealed plans thathe has in store in coming daysand the case that he is facing forhiding information from elec-tion commission during the lastAssembly Elections.

What initiatives are you plan-ning to take in the coming daysfor Intermediate Education? There are a lot of plans in store. We are planning to implementmany initiatives in the comingdays. This year, we have decid-ed to introduce the jumblingsystem in intermediate practicalexams also.

Earlier, the jumbling systemwas confined to theory papers. The reason for introducing thissystem is to bring in more trans-parency in conduct practicalexams and put an end to

rumours of malpractices byjunior colleges.

Government Schools rununder AP ResidentialEducational Societies created arecord of sorts by achieving 99per cent pass percentage thisyear. It is a great achievementespecially at a time when pri-vate corporate colleges areleaving no stone unturned toachieve 100 per cent results. How are you planning to keepup this momentum?Yes, we have created a record byachieving exceptional results. To keep this achievement intactand raise the quality of educa-tion. We have decided to intro-duce an entrance exam for stu-dents to get admissions in ourresidential schools.

This will be implementedfrom the next academic year. Ithink this initiative will help indeveloping competitive spiritamong students besides helpingin them in honing their skills.

The department also has plansto set up three regional centresof excellence at various places. What is the objective behindsetting up such schools?Regional centres of excellencewill help in developing the abilities of a student in a com-prehensive manner. Our idea isto provide modern educationon par with other private insti-tutions to poor and needy stu-dents of the State especiallythose from rural backgrounds.

You also hold the crucial port-folio of the excise department, which is the cash cow of theState government. What is thestatus of this department espe-cially in the wake of continu-ous agitations and ACB raidsin recent times? The excise department is func-tioning exceptionally well. Wehave recorded a year-on-yeargrowth of nine per cent so far.The flow of revenue is alsoincreasing every day. We areplanning to introduce manymore initiatives in the comingdays to ensure transparencyand achieve our targets.

You are facing charges for hid-ing information related to aFera case from the electioncommission while submittingyour affidavit during the 2009Assembly Election. Do youthink vested elements resort-ed to this to tarnish yourimage?Well, the case is sub-judice now.So, I cannot comment on it atthis juncture. There is a men-tion of the case in the affidavitthat I submitted in 2004Assembly Elections.

I will fight the case out inthe court of law and emerge vic-torious. Coming to your secondquestion, in politics, it is verycommon to attack politicalopponents. So, I do not want tocomment on who could bebehind it.

‘End malpractices in colleges’State Cabinet minister and minister for intermediate education and secondary

education talks about his plans for education in the State.

The Consortium of IndianFarmers' Associations(CIFA) and theFederation of

Independent Farmers'Associations (FIFA) will be filinga petition in the Supreme Courtopposing the recommendationof an expert panel appointed byit for a 10-year moratorium ongenetically-modified crop trials.

Lok Satta Party Nationalpresident Jayaprakash Narayan, who also heads FIFA, and CIFAsecretary general P ChengalReddy announced this at amedia conference here today.

JP disclosed the prime minis-ter had favourably responded tohis suggestion that the govern-ment of India should make out astrong case against the proposedmove for a moratorium on GMcrop trials.

Both the leaders maintainedthat the Supreme Court cannotarrogate to itself the right to takedecisions that affect the liveli-hood and health of crores offarmers and consumers.

JP said it has become a fash-ion for certain groups to opposetechnological progress. “Safety isa concern but it must be decidedby qualified scientists and regu-latory agencies by following dueprocess; not by scare-monger-ing,” he observed.

“Feeding on fears and preju-dices based on half-knowledge isdangerous to India's future.Technology must be acceptedwhole-heartedly after takingnecessary precautions,” he said. There was fierce oppositionwhen BT cotton was introducedfor the first time nearly twodecades ago. Today, BT cottonaccounts for 97 per cent of 30million acres of cotton crop. Thedemand for BT cotton seed is somuch that farmers have to buy itin the black market now. It wasgenetic modification of wheat byDr Norman Borlaug that haspropelled the green revolution inIndia and around the world.Genetic modification of cropswill lead to higher productionand productivity and contribute

to development of nutrient-enriched produce.

JP pointed out that a numberof countries like the US, Brazil,China, South Africa andAustralia have gone in for GMcrops with no deleterious effectson their populations.

Chengal Reddy said thatgenetic crops are being raised in160 million hectares in 29 coun-tries. People around the worldincluding those in India havebeen consuming GM food produce with no harmful consequences

The CIFA leader said thatIndia cannot ensure food securi-ty to its people, higher incomesto farmers and compete withother nations in agriculture ofthe Supreme Court applies thebrakes on GM crops. Raising GMcrops is the fundamental right offarmers, he asserted.

Referring to charges made byIndia Against Corruptionagainst Reliance, JP wanted thegovernment to ferret out factsand take action against theguilty. According to Relianceestimates, the production of nat-ural gas from the Krishna-Godavari D6 block should havetouched 120 million standardcubic meters per day (mscmd)by now whereas it has plummet-ed to 28 mscmd now. HON’BLE MINISTER DRSHANKAR RAO! Senior Congress leader and partyMLA Dr P Shankar Rao, whowas sacked from Kiran’s Cabineta few months ago, continues tobe a Cabinet minister! The Stategovernment’s calendar for 2012,published when Rao was a min-ister, adorns the chambers of allthe ministers and IAS officers inthe secretariat. Some who do notfollow State politics closely thinkhe’s still a minister and phonecalls to him confirms this.Incidentally, the good doc has atalent of earning more enemiesthan friends with his acerbictongue. But all seem to be one inconsidering him a minister. IA

ENDS OF A SPECTRUMThe two GHMC unions —GHMEU (TRS) and BMSEU(BJP) — who have been fightinga battle over office space, saw the

farewell party of 33 retiringemployees as a good opportuni-ty to outshine the other.

The occasion, an emotionalmoment for the retiring employ-ees who were attached with thecorporation for over threedecades, were chagrined to seethe two leaders taking an amus-ingly opposite ends of the spec-trum. Four of the 33 employeesdidn’t get PF cheques. U Gopal ofthe GHMEU, usually a suavecharacter, went into a high-pitched rant about official apathy. He turned the nozzle of his ire onadditional commissioner (admin)for the lapse (later it turned out tobe not his fault). But BMSEUleader K Shankar, usually a babu-basher, suddenly came to the offi-cer’s rescue and denounced‘some people’s tendency’ to rundown ‘honest officers’. MN

HAS SPEAKER LOST ALLAUTHORITY?The electricity department has

developed a thick skin. Despitecitizens crying foul at the mind-less ‘pruning’ of trees, and themedia denouncing the attitude, the ‘power people’ continue toemploy ‘butchers’ for pruning. The latest example is just in

front of the US Consulate resi-dence in Jubilee Hills. A longstretch of pavement is coveredwith piles of branches cut fromthe roadside trees and they arerotting in rain and shine. Greatimage the US will have ofHyderabad. More pathetic is thefact that this ugly act has hap-pened smack in front of SpeakerN Manohar’s residence.Passersby ask if the Speaker haslost grip over officials too afterlosing all paternal authorityover the MLAs. PK

POOR NETAS!Have a heart. We all envy thepower-wielding leaders of theruling party, but often forgettheir travails. Besides CM KiranKumar Reddy and PCC chiefBotsa Satyanarayana, many whohave access to the sanctum sanc-torum are these days changingthe SIM of their cellphones toescape the flood of calls fromhopefuls who want to get in thenominated posts, Cabinet berthsand PCC seats to ‘serve the pub-

lic.’ Ever since the Congressleadership gave a hint that theywould be filling up thousands ofnominated positions across theState as well as PCC and theCabinet a la Union Cabinet, theassault has intensified. You willsee, if you look closely, manykhadi-wearing netas’ pockets a-bulging — no, not with curren-cy, but with their curriculumvitae. PK

DIVINE TREASURY The spate of burglaries in theCity temples has perplexed thepolice. Why the sudden surge inthese cases? Police officers whis-per that all places of worshipshould be asked to keep valu-ables in safe deposits (except thehundi) so that the gold will nottempt ‘unholy’ burglars, who arethe devotees of no god but ofgold. Worth consideration, per-haps. MS

Srikanth was clearly in a badmood, when I met him out-side my office. He was pacingup and down the corridor

with a scowl and fists clenched. Onseeing me, he smiled faintly. I ledhim into my office and asked, "whathappened? Did you lose a lot ofmoney in the stock market?", forSrikanth was an active investor!

Srikanth: Yes I did. But I wouldnot feel so bad if I had made awrong call and invested in thewrong stock. I am feeling bad and Iam upset because I lost money dueto my broker's mistake.

Srikanth: I had placed a sellorder for my holdings in a company, through my broker. But the shareswere not sold on the same day. Infact they were sold two days later. Inthose two days, the stock price wentdown by about 6% and I ended uplosing close to `20,000.

Nicky: Did you ask the brokerfor a clarification?

Srikanth (annoyed at the ques-

tion): Of course I did. They said thatthere were some technical issues.

Nicky: Do you have a record orany documentation relating to whenyou placed the order?

Srikanth: You are not really help-ing me by asking these obviousquestions. But, to answer you, ofcourse I do. The records will beavailable in the 'order history' of myaccount.

Nicky: I am asking you thesequestions because I have a solutionfor you. Why don't you complain tothe Securities Exchange Board ofIndia (SEBI)? SEBI has a cell dedicat-ed for Investor Assistance andEducation (OIAE), which also han-

dles investor grievances. But beforeyou go to them, you must file a com-plaint with the stock exchangeagainst the broker. If the exchange'sresponse is not satisfactory to you, then you can go to SEBI.

Srikanth: Why should I unneces-sarily get into litigation? My moneyis not going to come back.

Nicky: Well, it might! The stockexchange might pay you from theirinvestor protection fund, or theymight instruct the broker to pay youthe amount of loss incurred by you.In case the exchange is not able tosettle the case and you lodge a com-plaint with SEBI, then SEBI mightget the exchange or the broker topay to you.

Srikanth (finally getting what Iwas talking about): But how do Ilodge my complain?

Nicky: Now you are askingobvious questions. Complain bywriting to them through post, mail, hand deliver your written com-plaint or talk to them on their tollfree number. All these details areavailable on the SEBI website.

Srikanth: Thank you professor.Yet again, your inputs were veryhelpful.

Sanjay Gupta, chief executiveof PB Lifestyle, said the famousbunny costume of a skimpycorset with a fluffy rabbit tailand ears would be adapted tosuit India’s conservative values, and he stressed no nudity wouldbe involved.

“Bunnies are an integral partof Playboy clubs,” he told AFP.“For the obvious reasons ofIndian morality and sensibilities,we can’t follow the traditionalcostumes that Playboy bunniesare associated with.”

The new outfits will berevealed at the club’s launch atits 22,000-square-foot (2,050-square-metre) premises onCandolim beach in north Goa.

Playboy, along with a host ofother foreign “adult” magazines,is not permitted in India owingto obscenity laws banning mate-rial deemed “lascivious orappealing to prurient interests”.

Bollywood actress SherlynChopra became the first Indianwoman to pose naked forPlayboy magazine this year, causing something of a stir inher home country.

PLAYBOY IN INDIA

Playboy’s iconic ‘bunnies’ will make a demure Indian debut next month serving drinks at thebrand’s first club in Goa, which will open despite a nationwide ban on the adult magazine.

HOW IT ALL BEGANThe Playboy Club initially was a chain ofnightclubs and resorts owned and oper-ated by Playboy Enterprises. The firstclub opened at 116 E. Walton Street indowntown Chicago, Illinois, UnitedStates, on February 29, 1960.

Each club generally featured a LivingRoom, a Playmate Bar, a Dining Roomand a Club Room. Members and theirguests were served food and drinks byPlayboy Bunnies some of whom werefeatured in Playboy magazine. The clubsoffered name entertainers and comedi-ans in the Club Rooms and in the LivingRooms were local musicians and theoccasional close-up magician.

During the last three months of 1961,more than 132,000 people visited theChicago club, making it the busiest nightclub in the world. Playboy Club member-ship became a status symbol. Only 21per cent of all key holders ever went to aclub. At $25.00 per year per membership,Playboy earned $25 million for every1,000,000 members. This revenue streamwas critical to the development of thePlayboy empire.

The Rabbit-headed metal Playboy key(supplanted by a plastic key-card in1966) was required for admission to aclub. They were presented to the DoorBunny. Through most of the years a strictdress code was enforced.

Starting with theLondon and Jamaicaclub locations, thePlayboy Club wentinternational. In 1991the club chainbecame defunct. In2006, a few new clubswere re-launched andas of 2012, there areoperating clubs inMacao and Cancun.(The Vegas clubclosed in June, 2012.)

SUPERSTORM SANDY: THE AFTERMATH

BRIGITTE DUSSEAU &ANDRE VIOLLAZ Agencie France-Presse

NEW YORK: The death tollfrom superstorm Sandy neared100 on Thursday even as NewYork struggled back to life amidall the suffering, with the firstsubway trains rolling in fourdays.

New York authorities saidSandy killed at least 40 peoplein the city and the number waslikely to climb further. At least92 people have now beenreported dead across the 15states hit by the hurricane onMonday night.

Fuel shortages led to longlines of cars at filling stations inmany states and the countryfaced a storm bill that someeconomists have estimated at$50 billion.

More bodies are being foundas police and firefighters contin-ue “their lifesaving mission, going block-by-block and door-to-door in the areas devastatedby the hurricane,” New YorkMayor Michael Bloomberg said.

With about 650,000 peoplestill without power in NewYork, Bloomberg said the citywould start handing out foodand water, while National

Guard officers and police wouldgo into high-rise buildings tohelp the elderly.

The Con Edison power com-pany said some New Yorkerswould have to wait untilNovember 11 before electricityis restored.

National Guard officershelped rescue people trapped inflooded homes across theHudson River from New Yorkin Hoboken, where authorities

estimated on Wednesday that20,000 people were stuck intheir homes.

The floodwaters recededslowly, leaving scenes of desola-tion. A yacht, thrown up by the

storm, blocked one street nearthe Hoboken ferry terminal.

Obama and RepublicanWhite House challenger MittRomney resumed full cam-paigning on Thursday five daysout from a nailbiter election.

Hurricane Sandy broughtdevastation throughout theCaribbean before hitting theUnited States and Canada. The overall death is now at least163.

Cuomo warns price-hikers

New York state governor Andrew Cuomowarned utility companies against price-

hiking after superstorm Sandy, as heannounced further reopening of subwaylines and trains servicing the suburbs. “Donot try to take advantage of New Yorkers,”he said, stating that if the state believespublic energy and transport companies arenot being diligent or doing the right thing, they could lose their certification.

NY marathon to go ahead

With devastation from Hurricane Sandyas a backdrop, the 43rd New York

Marathon will be contested Sunday andMayor Michael Bloomberg vowed it willhappen without draining resources fromvictims. “This city is a city where we have togo on,” Bloomberg said Thursday. “Themarathon is not going to redirect anyfocus.” Bloomberg said electricity and trans-portation are being restored in time.

Bloomberg endorses Obama

New York Mayor Michael Bloombergreluctantly endorsed Barack Obama’s

campaign for a second term Thursday, say-ing the president’s efforts on climatechange outweighed his failure on the econ-omy. Bloomberg first won office as aRepublican but split from the party andnow runs the biggest US city as an inde-pendent. He did not endorse a candidate in2008.

14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSHow dare Greek editor Costas Vaxevanis publish a list of Greek citizenswith money in Swiss bank accounts. Does he not know that a man’sfinances are private. After all, how else can we maintain gross economicinequality. Really Costas, thumbs-down from HFT.

US-China ties willremain "vexing andchallenging" asBeijing's new lead-ers face internal

stresses due to a slowing econo-my and increasing distrust fromtheir people, US diplomats said.

"It will be the most conse-quential foreign policy chal-lenge that we will ever face," USAssistant Secretary of State KurtCampbell told a seminar held inWashington, speaking aboutfuture relations between the twopowers.

China and the United States— the world's top twoeconomies — are both poised onthe eve of major decisions aboutthe makeup of their leadershipover the coming years.

Americans vote on Tuesdayfor the next president, amid afierce battle between PresidentBarack Obama — whose admin-istration has made Asia the newpivot of its foreign policy — andhis Republican challenger MittRomney.

China's political elite wasalso jostling for power with theCommunist Party Committeemeeting behind closed doorsahead of next week's largerparty congress that will usher in

the country's leaders for thenext decade.

The US-China relationshipwill be "much more difficultthan any relationship that we'vehad in the preceding years, largely because of its complexi-ty," Campbell told the forumorganized by GeorgetownUniversity.

"It will be vexing and chal-lenging," he said, flanked bythree of his predecessors asassistant secretary for EastAsian and Pacific affairs.

"My only recommendation, actually my hope for whoeverfollows in our footsteps, is thatthere is a recognition that goodChina policy is best done whenit is embedded in Asian strate-gy," Campbell added.

"Good China policy doesn't

mean just going to Beijing. Itmeans working in the neigh-bourhood, working to ensurethat other countries are withyou in dialogue and discussionson issues of mutual concern."

Winston Lord, an assistantsecretary of state from 1993-1997who accompanied RichardNixon when he became the firstUS president to visit Beijing in1972, called it a "sweet-and-sourrelationship." But he warnedthat China stood at a crucialthreshold in its history.

"If they don't make changesin their economic and politicalsystem in the next decade, Ithink you could see real instabil-ity, which could in turn lead to amore nationalistic and aggres-sive foreign policy," said Lord, aformer US ambassador to

China. Richard Solomon, assis-tant secretary of state from 1989to 1992, agreed saying Chinawas entering "a very difficultperiod" and there was a "grow-ing alienation of the societyfrom the party leadership."

"One way to put it is that thesociety has outgrown the politi-cal system that brought the rev-olution," Solomon said.

Flourishing his cell phonebefore the audience, he saidthere were an estimated 400 mil-lion mobile phones now inChina.

"We're dealing with a mobi-lized population. They knowwhat's going on, they knowwhat's happening in their soci-ety and the world," he said, adding that Chinese officials hehad spoken to are "feeling a lotof public pressure."

The next generation of com-munist leaders "face some veryfundamental issues about open-ing up the political process anddealing with a very substantialmeasure of distrust from thepopulation."

But Christopher Hill, whopreceded Campbell from 2005 to2009, argued there was stillmuch that the United States didnot understand about China.

He said that calling the scan-dal surrounding disgracedsenior official Bo Xilai a tale ofcorruption was a bit likedescribing Moby-Dick as a storyabout a whale.

When nature strikes, humans are powerless

If superstorm Sandy proved one thing it’s that no matter how strong we humans thinkwe are, we’re no match against nature in all her furious glory. Climate change and its

effects on the world and its populations have sadly been absent from the US electioncampaign. While Obama rode a wave of environmental awareness and a yearning to

stem climate change, he has done little in his four years as president. Mitt Romneydoesn’t give a fig about the environment, but the ‘perfect storm’ that hit the US Eastern

seaboard over the weekend is an indictment of man’s blinkered vision of the comingeco apocalypse. We need to act now and act fast, but in order to that we must first

accept that there’s a problem, and that’s something very few in power are willing to do.Whether Obama, if he gets a second term, will lead the world to be more eco conscious

and push for legislation that will not only accept that climate change is occurring butalso attempt to stop it remains to be seen. Fingers crossed.

Why we love... Blake Shelton

Anybody who watches the reality talentshow, The Voice, can’t help but be

blown away by country star and judge,Blake Shelton’s cutting sense of humour. The strapping crooner lets fly zingers at afurious rate, and does it all with a straightface. That Shelton is also a great countrysinger, and one who refuses to wear a stet-son, was proved after he swept last night’sCountry Music Awards. Of course the factthat he’s also married to Miranda Lamberthelps a lot.

let tales of its complexity putyou off, it’s easy to follow and

well worth the slight intellectualtaxation required at some of theturns. But there’s one line in the

everything the film’s about. Itcomes from Sonmi-451, played

by the excellent Doona Bae:“Our lives are not our own”, she

says as she watches her worldcrash all around her. But she’sright; our lives truly aren’t our

own. As we wander through lifewe pick up travelling compan-

ions. Some stay for a lifetime, others flit in, place a delicate

memory and then flit out, takingtheir own road to the dark,

inevitable nothingness. But ourcompanions also change ourlives; they remove the selfish

and replace it with a reluctantselflessness. Parents make sacri-fices for their children, partners

for each other, and as humanswe always concede that as a

flawed species we are caught inan eternal spiral of having to

19A simple patch can help

When worn 45 minutes before drinking and left on till the next day, the patch releases theingredients continuously into the blood stream as opposed to a pill which is too quick.

LONDON: Good news for tip-plers! A simple patch can put anend to that morning-after hang-over from a night of alcohol rev-ellery. The Bytox HangoverPrevention Patch claims to stophangovers even before they startas users are instructed to attachthe body patch 45 minutesbefore drinking.

An invention of a US plasticand reconstructive surgeon DrLeonard Grossman, the patchhas gone on sale in the UK fol-lowing its launch in New York

late last year, the Daily Mailreported.

According to the packaging, the patch replenishes the vita-mins and acids lost when con-suming alcohol — in the sameway that the intravenous ‘partydrip’ vitamin injections. Thepatch has not received any offi-cial medical backing either in theUK or in the US.

It has, however, receivedglowing reviews from con-sumers who have posted onwebsites, with one writing: “Itried it twice. Both times afternine or 10 martinis. I can onlyaccount for myself. It worksgreat.”

Users are instructed to attachthe patch — which is similar inappearance and design to a nico-

tine patch — 45 minutes beforedrinking and leave it on until thenext day or about eight hoursafter they finish drinking.Grossman has claimed that theingredients — B vitamins, acaiberry, vitamins A, D, E and Kand folic — are delivered contin-uously to the bloodstream asopposed to those from a pillwhich are relatively quick.

Firebox, which is selling thepatch in the UK, said on its web-site: “The rationale for this‘game changing’ body patch isto stop hangovers before theystart. Easily applied, it is infusedwith a powerful blend of vita-mins, nutrients and antioxidantswhich are absorbed whilstimbibing, meaning a fasterrecovery time,” it said. PTI

SYDNEY: Researchers havephotographed a virus reproduc-ing and destroying cells, for thevery first time, given the tiny sizeof these micro-organismsbetween 20 and 200 nanometres(a nanometre is a billionth of ametre).

“The image shows vacciniavirus, the live-virus vaccine usedto eradicate smallpox, spreadingfrom a single infected cellthrough an entire layer of mon-key kidney cells,” said TimothyNewsome, from the Universityof Sydney.

Newsome and Dean Procter, doctoral student from his lab atthe university’s School ofMolecular Bioscience, collaborat-ed with colleagues from theAustralian National Universityto create the image. The tech-nique also helps calculate thelevel of infectious virus presentin cells, the journal Cell reports.

It was part of Newsome’sresearch on understanding therole of viral genes in viral biolo-gy and the effect that mutatingthese genes has on the viruses'ability to cause disease. Theimage is fittingly titled ‘Eye ofthe Storm’ to convey the sense ofseeing the starting point of theviral activity in the cells.

“The image is actually a com-posite of several smaller imagestaken in the microscope facilityin the School of MolecularBioscience,” said Procter, accord-ing to a Sydney statement.

“To create them we workwith the ideal dilution of highlyconcentrated virus so that only afew cells are infected. Thatallows us to monitor the spreadof the virus through the uninfect-ed cell layer,” he added.

Three days after the initialinfection, the cells are chemicallyfixed, creating a snapshot of theinfection at this stage. IANS

3D tool to spot anomaliesin unborn heart!

Circulating blood cells drag on the endothelial cells, which is linked to changes ingene expression. These changes can trigger birth defects.

PAEDIATRICS AND PATERNAL FACTORSPAEDIATRICS AND PATERNAL FACTORSBREAKTHROUGH

WASHINGTON: Researchershave created a 3D map to pin-point malformations in anunborn heart and how it can bedamaged by alcohol, drugs andother factors.

Circulating blood cells dragon the endothelial cells (a layerof cells that lines the inside ofcertain cavities such as thegrowing heart) in a processcalled shear stress, which islinked to changes in geneexpression.

These changes can triggerbirth defects, most often in thevalves. But precisely howthey’re connected is unclear.

“Alcohol exposure mayaffect shear stress by modulat-ing the heart rate, but it mayalso involve vigour and/or tim-ing of the contraction,” saidAndrew Rollins, senior studyauthor.

“Now that we have the tool,we can start to figure that out,”said Rollins, associate professorof biomedical engineering atCase Western ReserveUniversity, the journalBiomedical Optics Expressreported.

“We’re analysing early andlate development of the heartand trying to make the connec-tions that result in valve dys-function,” said Lindsy M.Peterson, doctoral student inRollins' lab, who led the study, according to a Case Westernstatement.

To look at the structure ofthe developing heart and bloodflow, the researchers modified a

technology called Doppler opti-cal coherence tomography.Called OCT for short, the tech-nology involves shining aninfrared laser on the heart.

The reflections measured at

various depths are used to cre-ate a 3D image in much thesame manner submariners usesonar to picture their surround-ings in the deep sea. But theresearchers add the dimension

of time, creating movies ofblood flow through the struc-tures, needed to map shearstress.

They take their first imagesat two days, during a stage ofheart development. They takemore images at three days andagain at eight days, when theseptum, the wall between theleft and right sides of the heart, has formed.

The pair teamed withresearch assistant professorMichael W. Jenkins; seniorresearch associate Shi Gu; LeeBarwick, undergraduateresearcher now at BrighamYoung University; and MichikoWatanabe, professor of paedi-atrics at Case Western.

Working with GangaKarunamuni, paediatricsresearch associate at CaseWestern, they are now pursuinga slew of experiments testingthe quail heart model’sresponse to alcohol exposureand will also test exposure tomental health drugs calledselective serotonin receptorinhibitors. Alone or together, they can alter sheer stress.

WASHINGTON: Empathy cantrick the smartest of brains intobeing fooled by a swindler, saysa new US research.

The network of neurons(nerve cells) that allows us toempathise also dumbs down thebrain's analytical network, saysthe study by the Case WesternReserve University.

The findings show for thefirst time that we have a built-inneural constraint on our ability

to be both empathetic and ana-lytic simultaneously.

When the analytic network isengaged, our ability to appreci-ate the human cost of our actionis repressed, the journalNeuroImage reports.

At rest, our brains cyclebetween the social and analyticalnetworks. But when presentedwith a task, healthy adultsengage the appropriate neuralpathway, the researchers found,

according to a Case Westernstatement.

“This is the cognitive struc-ture we've evolved,” saidAnthony Jack, assistant professorof cognitive science at CaseWestern who led the new study.

“Empathetic and analyticthinking are, at least to someextent, mutually exclusive in thebrain,” Jack said.

The work suggests that estab-lished theories about two com-

peting networks within the brainmust be revised. Moreover, italso provides insights into theoperation of a healthy mind ver-sus those of the mentally ill ordevelopmentally disabled.

A number of earlier studiesshowed that two large scalebrain networks are in tension inthe brain, one which is known asthe default mode network and asecond known as the task posi-tive network. IANS

intu-

ition to fight one of the mostdangerous villains Bond hasever faced. It's a far cry from thereputation which Bond filmshave built over the years, but atthe same time, this treatment tomake Bond more vulnerable tothreat and to make him rely onhis guts, works wonders for thecharacter. Daniel Craig is fantas-tic in his role despite the lack ofsophistication. The new ageBond doesn't even think twicebefore getting his hands dirty, indulge in close combataction and fight backdespite being not inthe best of forms.Javier Bardemis menacingas RaoulSilva, the

Thefilm has been written by JohnLogan, Neal Purvis and RobertWade whose previous creditsinclude Gladiator, Aviator, Hugoand four previous Bond films. The writing is smart and thereare several dialogues indicatingthe change of times at MI6.Roger Deakins' cinematography

MOVIE: SkyfallCAST: Daniel Craig, Javier

Bardem, Judi Dench, RalphFiennes

DIRECTOR: Sam MendesRATING:

Sam Mendes strips the James Bond franchise of its two most important crowd-pullers — glamour and gad-gets, but weaves a stunning drama where the very existence of MI6 is at stake. It might very well be the

best Bond film we have seen in recent times.

KAKURO QUICK CROSSWORD

SUDOKU

26THOUGHT OF THE DAYDo you know what it means to come home at night to a woman who'll give you a little love, alittle affection, a little tenderness? It means you're in the wrong house, that's what it means.

Henny Youngman

SCRIBBLING PAD

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let’s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

Recycling and reusing helps alot to save the environment aswe work towards reducingwaste and making optimal useof resources.

Most importantly young-sters usually ape stars or iconsthey look up to. Fashion issomething every youngster fol-lows. And it is very unfair tohave this pressure of not beingable to repeat clothes or acces-sories.

HYDERABAD: Commonwealth Gamesbronze winner Amandeep Singh of Railwaysand 2009 Asian Championship gold medallistNanao Singh of Services notched up contrast-ing wins to reach the quarterfinals of the 59thSahara Men's National Boxing Championshiphere today.

The first to take the ring, Nanao thrashedSumit Bansi of Goa 17-5 in the round threematch of the light fly weight division at the LBstadium here. He will next take on VinodKumar of SPSB.

Nanao started with his usual aggressiveapproach not allowing the Goan boxer to set-tle down and before the round was over, hehad a six point advantage.

He soon double the lead with a flurry ofpunches coupled with some nifty footwork. Inthe final three minutes, Bansi tried hard to getback but the 2008 Youth CommonwealthChampion did not allow his opponent to closethe gap and eased to the last eight comfort-ably.

"It was a good fight, I played my naturalgame and at the same time tried to avoid anyinjuries as I have to play three more rounds towin the title and that's what I am focusing on,"said the 21-year-old.

Amandeep, on the other hand, had towork a bit hard against Lal Chand Shaw ofWest Bengal, but in the end the veteran boxercame through in fine style.

Shaw, a belligerent and a bit of a scrappyfighter, made it difficult for Amandeep to getinside and score points. But Amandeep's inand out and side to side movement helpedhim do the damage efficiently.

He led 3-1 in the first round and 3-2 in thesecond. The two times Asian Championshipmedal winner upped the ante in the finalround and went on to win the bout 10-4.

In the quarters he will square up againstSalman Anwar Shaikh of Maharashtra. PTI

ABU DHABI: Red Bull will notimpose team orders on MarkWebber (in pic) in Sunday’s AbuDhabi Grand Prix as they seek toset up Sebastian Vettel for a thirdsuccessive world title and clinchthe constructors’ championship.

Instead, Red Bull team bossChristian Horner said onThursday they will expect him toobey his best instincts as ‘a teamplayer’ even though, mathemati-cally, he retains a chance of win-ning the drivers’ title himself.

Vettel, 25, who is 13 pointsahead of nearest rival FernandoAlonso of Ferrari, will become thesport’s youngest triple championif he retains his title this year.

Webber is fourth behindthird-placed Kimi Raikkonen ofLotus with 167 points compared

to Vettel’s total of 240 with threeraces remaining.

Horner said: “I am sure as ateam player, if required, he willdo everything to support theteam.

“Mathematically now it isvery difficult for him to win thechampionship and he is a smartguy. He has been an importantpart of the team and I have everyconfidence that he will be doinghis best to help the team achieveits objectives for the champi-onship.

“Mark is a strong competitorand he is a big team player. I amquite convinced that he will wantto see the team achieve its bestpossible results.”

Asked if any instructions hadbeen given to Webber, Horner

said: “I think you can talk aboutso many scenarios and then ascenario you haven’t talkedabout is the one that comes up.

“Mark is a bright guy, and hehas been around a long time. Heis a key member of the team andI think that he will be able to dohis best.

“His primary objective is tomake sure we achieve the con-structors’ championship and forus that we have got both driversahead of Fernando (Alonso).

“He was desperately unluckylast week not to keep Fernandobehind after having to runreduced power and KERS formost of the race. So he will bedriving his best to ensure that wehave got two Red Bulls right upthe front end.” AFP

SYDNEY: Australian athletes will need tosign a document stating they have neverengaged in doping under a proposal suggest-ed by the nation’s Olympic chief Friday in thewake of the cycling drug scandal.

“If they don’t sign, they don’t go to theGames, they won’t be selected,” AustralianOlympic Committee president John Coatessaid.

“What I don’t want is for the AOC to haveegg on its face like cycling has.”

Cycling has been rocked by the LanceArmstrong controversy after the United StatesAnti-Doping Agency in October found theAmerican rider had helped orchestrate themost sophisticated doping programme in thehistory of sport.

Armstrong was issued a life ban andstripped of his seven Tour de France titles.

Coates said he could not allow the AOC tosuffer the same fate as cycling, as he urged thatathletes, coaches and officials all sign a statu-tory declaration as part of the team agreementsaying they had no history of doping. AFP

“The Test series will be interesting.England are coming off a home seriesdefeat against South Africa (2-0),while India will miss the experience ofRahul Dravid and VVS Laxman,”Wright said. “The middle-order isquite new. The series will be a closely-contested one and it won’t be 4-0 toIndia,” he added.

The former Test cricketer addedthat the first innings of the match willhold the key to success as the teamthat will put runs on the board orpicks up early wickets will enjoy anupper hand.

He also mentioned that it will be areal test for the spin duo ofRavichandran Ashwin and PragyanOjha. However, Wright said that the

two have bowled very well in tandemso far.

The first of the four Tests is sched-uled to be played at Motera Stadiumhere on November 15.

India go into the series against thebackdrop of eight consecutive awayTest defeats. However, they beat bot-

tom placed New Zealand 2-0 at homein September.

Averse to the idea of Day-NightTest matches, Wright said the ICC’smove to introduce D/N Tests is anattempt to bring back spectators butthe format should be thoroughly tri-alled first. PTI

SYDNEY: Australia has an unlikely weapon as itprepares to stave off a red-hot South African bowl-ing attack — a Pakistani asylum-seeker who willbe helping batsmen ready for the Proteas.

Fawad Ahmed, who left his home in the bor-der region near Afghanistan to come to Australiaon a short-stay visa to play cricket in 2010, isawaiting news on whether his claim for asylumhas been accepted.

In the meantime, he will be used by theAustralian team for batting practice during theSouth Africa series because of the similarities inhis bowling to the Proteas’ leg-spinner ImranTahir.

“I’m really excited and I think I can bowl well. It’s good for them and it’s good for me, that theyhave asked me to go there,” Ahmed told theSydney Morning Herald.

Ahmed is familiar with naturalised SouthAfrican Tahir, having played against him whenthey were both in Pakistan’s domestic cricket.

“We are the same height, with a high armaction, and we can both bowl a good wrong ‘un,”he said. “His leg spin is bouncy, and I am like him,so it’s good for the Australian batsmen to practiseon my bowling”.

Ahmed will be in Brisbane as a net bowlerahead of the Test starting on November 9, eventhough there is no guarantee South Africa — withits powerful pace line-up — will use Tahir at theGabba. But Australian opener Ed Cowan, whopushed for Ahmed to be a net bowler, said it madesense to practise against him ahead of the contestagainst the world’s number one Test side. AFP
