ENarsasimha Rao, himselfdeprived of a good educa-tion, had a great ambition —to make his son an engineer

and daughter a doctor. Accordingly,he did all he could to give them thebest education he can.

The only problem is that Rao,who hails from Mahbubnagar, makes a living by robbing people. He was wanted in 150 cases of theftsand burglary including the 2004Musheerabad jewellery theft, andheaded a gang of three, police say.Rao was arrested recently andarraigned for a series of crimes.

Crime inspector of police,Musheerabad, Mohd Riyazuddinhas taken more than a professionalinterest in finding out why Rao tookto crime. It was then that Raorevealed his sad tale. The thief saidhe was in dire need of a lot of moneyto educate his children and meet hisfamily’s needs. He did not makeenough to buy ration from the dosacart that he ran for a while, forgeteducation.

Rao said that some years ago helearnt to lift shutters of shops with-out too much effort and later formeda gang with one G Madhu and TNarhari, both from Mahbubnagar.

Scores of shutter-lifting cases inMahbubnagar Ranga Reddy districtand Hyderabad remained unre-solved and police are now hopefulthat many of them can be solved

with the arrest of Rao.“If I had enough money to pay

for my children’s education I wouldhave quit this,” he is quoted as say-ing to the inspector.

The GHMC, which is gener-ating good revenue eachyear from property tax,

was asked to provide some of itsshare to the water works depart-ment by an MLA.

The Corporation referred tothe resolution passed during the‘financial crunch’ of 2010, whichdoes not allow extending support.

According to the officials ofthe GHMC, it was incurringhuge expenditure for mainte-nance of water supply and sew-

erage in core areas within theGHMC limits and also for main-tenance of water supplythrough tankers.

“The expenditure is comingto more than 25 per cent of theproperty tax collection towardsexecution of water supply and itsmaintenance.

While the HMWS&SB is tak-ing up road cutting work for itsmaintenance and also capitalworks, the entire cost of restora-tion is being taken up by theGHMC only,” said commissioner,MT Krishna Babu.

He points out that theGHMC was taking up works

suggested by local corporatorsand water board officials to theextent of `20 lakh for each ward, totalling to `30 crore per annum. This was taken up for improve-ment of water supply and underground drainage (UGD) works, for taking up UGD network inareas other than erstwhile MCH.

Based on a GO of themunicipal administration andurban development (MA&UD)passed on 16 July, 2009, orderswere issued directing the corpo-ration to levy various compo-nents of property tax at 30 percent of annual rental value(ARV) with respect to residen-

tial buildings above `3,600 ARVand non-residential buildingsduly providing for levy of watertax at 7.5 per cent ARV, on build-ings and lands which comes to25 per cent of property tax.

The corporation, in its meet-ing held on January 18, 2010,passed a resolution directing theGHMC commissioner to notrelease the funds to HMWS&SBin view of the financial crunch.

“The resolution of the corpo-ration was submitted to Stategovernment for further ordersand the orders from govern-ment are awaited,” said thecommissioner.

It’s the beginning of the festi-val season and is also timefor local leaders to do busi-ness by asking officials to

engage equipment or serviceswhich are at their disposal.

Some of these leaders owntents, vehicles and furniture, which they force their officialsto use to make festivals a suc-cess. Little wonder then thateach community is competingwith each other to make its festi-val grander than ever before.

The next big festival aroundthe corner is Ramnavami. Civicofficials want to know if the offi-cials will ensure that the festivalis facilitated on a grander scalethan before.

“Each year, the festival sea-son begins with Ramnavamiand ends with Milad-Ul-Nabi,”says a senior official from thehealth wing, who has beenobserving the trend.

According to estimates, `20

lakh to `25 lakh is spent onsmall festivals and `50 lakh oneach big festival by the GHMCeach year. First, the trend waslimited to the south zone (partsof the Old City), but this trend isslowly spreading to newerlocalities. Bonalu is another big

regional festivals for which theGHMC has to make arrange-ments not only in Old City, butin areas like Secunderabad.

Local leaders push their pro-posals, and officials are made towalk a tight rope. Take forinstance the high mast lighting.

Even as the process for permit-ting it is under way, local lead-ers have handed over contractsto people known to them.Several lakhs are shown onpaper later. It is the officials whoare blamed when the entireepisode is reviewed.

Chota netas make officials sinEvery year, ‘leaders’ push civic officials to engage their goods and services to

make a harvest during festivals.

Will GHMC help water board? The GHMC says it cannot extend financial support according to a 2010 resolution.

The BJP, which has emerged asa sub-regional party in the

State, has unveiled a grand planto rewind its clock to the late1990s when the party won sevenLok Sabha seats in the wake ofthe Atal Behari Vajpayee wave.

The party on Wednesdayannounced that it will not be partof any alliance and would con-test all the 42 Lok Sabha seats inAndhra Pradesh in the nextGeneral Elections.

“We will be the main com-petitor to other political partiesduring the next GeneralElections,” BJP stalwart MVenkaiah Naidu said whileaddressing a press conference inHyderabad on Wednesday.

Naidu’s announcementassumes importance in the wakeof reports that the BJP, which isbitterly fighting for the forma-tion of a separate Telanganastate, might contest the nextGeneral Elections by either form-ing an alliance with the separateTelangana cause champion TRSor its erstwhile ally TeluguDesam Party.

The BJP veteran leader’sannouncement put a lid over thealliance reports and that of theparty being shy of fighting inRayalaseema and coastal Andhra.

During the press meet, Naidualso took a jibe at the TRS sayingit will not win in Telangana even

if it gets all the seats there. “Idon’t believe in their (TRS)claim. How can they form theTelangana state by simply win-ning 15 MP seats or all the 17? Itrequires many more numbers toachieve a new state. The BJPalone can give a separateTelangana state,” he said.

Naidu prophesised that theBJP will win more than 200 LokSabha seats on its own duringthe elections and return to powerwith a clear majority.

He also discarded claims ofsome party leaders, especiallythe TDP president N.Chandrababu Naidu, that theThird Front will form the gov-ernment at the Centre in 2014.

"I am surprised to that from aleader like Chandrababu. Howcan they form the Third Frontwhen the regional parties areeach others arch rivals. Even theNational Front government, which was formed earlier, tookthe help of the Congress fromoutside to form its government. Ithink the days of regional partiesruling the country have longgone," he said.

Naidu avoided questions onBJP’s prime minister candidate.

Hyderabad, a City richin heritage, culture, art and music, is nolonger keen on pre-

serving its heritage tag, it seems.Today’s fast-paced life and rateof economic development haslittle time for the past.

So far, no structure in theCity, or for that matter, of theState, has entered the list ofUNESCO heritage sites.Heritage activists express theirconcern about how the City willlose the few heritage structuresthat are left if not preserved.

IT’S ANOTHER WORLD Heritage Day is a day whenoaths are taken to preserve thecultural heritage. It turns out tobe a big fat lie, with more and

more heritage structures bull-dozed to pave way for malls andsupermarkets. Symbols ofHyderabad are left in shambles.Be it the Charminar, theGolconda Fort or the Qutb ShahiTombs, officials seem to beunaware that heritage sites can pay.

One such person who haswitnessed the transition of abeautiful City to a concrete jun-gle is Shafi Ulla, the managingtrustee of the Deccan HeritageTrust. He says, “The entire Citywas once on the status of worldheritage. However, in the nameof urban development, we havelost most of our heritage build-ings and sites. the buildings, they can be con-verted to hospitals, libraries orfunction halls so that the culturalheritage is retained and with thismonetary support, the heritagecan be maintained,” says thepresident for Forum for BetterHyderabad, M Veda Kumar.

Every street, every place inHyderabad has a history of itsown. It’s never too late to safe-guard the heritage of the City.Expressing hope on how thenext generation will stand up forthe rich cultural heritage, colum-nist and heritage activist

S Shahid says, “This problem isshort-lived and, in time to come, the generation will get back toits roots.”

“There is no harm in apingthe western culture, but insteadof blindly following that culture, let’s ape it in a way that is bene-ficial. Other countries ensurethat their heritage is preserved, and they sell the beauty of theirheritage structures to the world.Likewise, we too should pre-serve the heritage of Hyderabadand make it a massive revenuegenerator for the State,” he says.

Every year, April 18 is celebrated as World HeritageDay.

Though there is a lot of talkabout heritage, what many of usseem to lack is the basic aware-ness that it is the shared wealthof humankind that reminds us ofour rich past.

HYDERABAD

With no heritage site fromHyderabad or AndhraPradesh enteringUNESCO’s heritage list sofar, activists voice their concerns over the City losing its historic significance. On WorldHeritage Day, Postnoonfinds out what heritagemeans to people today andwhat we, as citizens, can doto preserve it.

First and foremost, one has to get to know the City andstart appreciating its natural beauty. We might thinkthat we know Hyderabad, but Hyderabad is not just

about the Charminar or biryani. Explore the City to knowand understand its various layers. Take your children onheritage walks. Instead of visiting malls, maybe you canvisit some ancient bamboo or tamarind grooves. Heritagedoes not only refer to buildings, but also includes arts, crafts, festivals and other forms of culture. You can con-tribute to the City’s heritage preservation by sharing it inthe form of photographs or documentary. Heritage can bepreserved in little bits even by picking up plastic that isthrown near preserved sites. In case you know anythingabout historical importance, you can always inform theIndian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage(INTACH), since there are hundreds of historic structuresoutside the purview of the State department that need pro-tection.

How can we contribute to theprotection of our heritage?

“Heritage to me is old buildingswhich reflect the culture and tradi-tion of the place. Heritage could alsomean food that reflects the tradi-tions of people. The first thing thatcomes to my mind when heritage isreferred to is the Charminar.”

Haritha, B. Com student

“Cultural Heritage can take manyforms: Buildings, artefacts, songs, sto-ries, scrolls, books. However, inHyderabad, all these forms are slowlyfading. When I ask students to writeabout the heritage of the State, nineout of 10 only write about Charminar.”

The APSRTC has decidedto purchase 1,400 newbuses to its existing fleetunder the first phase of

JNNURM. These buses will beput to service in Hyderabad,Tirupati, Vijaywada andVishakhapatnam.

The decision comes after theministry of urban development’sdirective to all State transportundertakings to draft therequirement of buses under thescheme. This is the second timethat the APSRTC is procuringbuses under JNNURM phase-Ischeme. The earlier procurementwas in 2010-11, when 1,540 luxu-ry buses under JNNURM phase-Ischeme were purchased, ofwhich a 1,000 were sanctioned

for Hyderabad and the remain-der for Vijayawada, Tirupati andVisakhapatnam.

In the latest procurement, ofthe total 1,445, 830 buses havebeen earmarked for Hyderabad. The estimated cost of procure-ment for the total 1,400 buses hasbeen pegged at `380 crore. TheAPSRTC has also appealed to theJNNURM to permit theCorporation to design and buildits own buses.

For this, the departmentplans to set up a unit to designbus bodies at Miyapur, as thepreviously-acquired buses werenot technically sound and didnot meet requirements. Also, thistime around they have decidedto procure more regular busesrather than air conditioned, lowfloor and semi-sleeper buses.Sources say that 50 per cent of

this cost is being borne by theJNNURM, 15 per cent by theState government and the bal-ance by the APSRTC. However, the department is yet to decom-mission many of its old buses and generate revenue andmake way for the new buses toply on the roads.

Speaking to Postnoon, execu-tive director of GreaterHyderabad zone A KoteswaraRao said, “The current fleet of theAPSRTC stands at 19,320 and atleast 15 per cent of them arebeing de-commissioned everyyear. Last year, we decommis-sioned over 1,500 old buses fromHyderabad and other majorcities in the State. The funds

received after decommis-sioning a bus in

scrap market is clubbed with thedepartment’s finances and isused in the procurement andmaintenance schemes of thefleet.”

NEXT DESTINATION USTrung Nguyen already exports to 60 countries and Vu saidStarbucks’ recent arrival in his homeland had increased his deter-mination to open cafes in the United States offering Vietnam’s tra-ditional style of thick, strong coffee brewed in individual drip filters.

BUON MA THUOT, VIET N -AM: Most Vietnamese coffeefarmers have never heard of adouble tall skinny latte, but theycould tell you the price of thebeans that go into one in theirsleep. From high-tech Israeli irri-gation systems to text messageupdates of global prices for thecommodity, coffee farming inVietnam’s Central Highlands hascome a long way since the Frenchfirst introduced the bean over acentury ago.

“I used to carry my coffeeto market by bicycle,” said44-year-old farmer Ama Diem.“Now I check the bean priceon my mobile phones” beforemaking the trip.

By texting “CA” to the num-ber 8288 from any Vietnamesemobile phone, farmers almostinstantly receive a message withthe London prices of Robusta cof-fee beans and the New York priceof Arabica beans from a data sup-ply firm.

Farmers are only tooaware that the price of coffee —

the second most traded commod-ity in the world after oil — canmove quickly.

“We only take the coffee tomarket when we can be sure ofgetting a high price,” Diem toldAFP at his plantation outsideVietnam’s coffee capital Buon MaThuot. “We check the price a lot.”

Vietnamese coffee farmershave changed the global market:if you had a cup this morning, there is a high chance you con-sumed at least some Vietnamesebeans with companies such asNestle and Britain’s Costa Coffeeamong major buyers.

In 20 years, Vietnamwent from contributing lessthan 0.1 percent of world produc-tion in 1980 to some 13 percent in2000 — staggering growth thathas been partially blamed for thecollapse of global coffee prices inthe 1990s.

The rise of cash crops such ascoffee in the Central Highlandshas come at a price, however. Some indigenous minorities havelost their land to large-scale plan-

tations, often run by majorityKinh who have migrated to theregion. Demonstrations havebeen repressed.

The communist country isnow the world’s second-largestcoffee producer, but is seen ashigh volume rather than highquality — its bitter-tastingRobusta wins few accoladesinternationally and is mostlyexported as raw beans.

“Vietnam is an amazing phe-nomenon,” said Jonathan Clark, general director of coffeeexporter Dakman.

He said exports “shot up”last year to nearly rival Brazil,

the world’s top exporterand producer.

Last year, Vietnamexported 1.73 million tons ofcoffee, worth some $3.67 billionand accounting for more than 50percent of the world’s Robusta, which is used in instant coffee orother blends.

Putting Vietnam’s Robusta onthe map

Coffee consumption in Asia ison the rise and roasters are eye-ing the low-cost country —where there is no tax on coffeeexports — to set up operations toboost their regional presence,Clark said.

As consumption volumeshave stagnated in the west,Vietnam, with its growing mid-dle class and long standing loveof coffee, is full of “tremendousopportunities”, Jinlong Wang, president of Starbucks AsiaPacific, told AFP.

Starbucks — which openedits first store in southern Ho ChiMinh City in February — says itcould open hundreds more in the

near future in Vietnam, which itdescribes as a “dynamic, excit-ing” market.

The country’s volcanic soil isperfect for growing coffee, andwhile global coffee drinkers aremore used to Arabica — whichhas 1.5 percent caffeine — theyshould wake up and smell thejoys of 2.5 percent strength Robu -sta, according to Vietnam’s “cof-fee king” Dang Le Nguyen Vu.

The founder of home-growncoffee giant Trung Nguyen —which has 55 stores in Vietnamand five in Singapore — is pas-sionate about putting Vietnam’sRobusta coffee on the map.

“Robusta is not lower quality. It’s just that globally, people havelearned to drink Arabica coffee,”Vu told AFP in an interview atthe Trung Nguyen Village inBuon Ma Thuot.

A big part of the company’swork is to improve the quality oflocal beans, working with farm-ers to introduce high-tech irriga-tion, reduce pesticide use andboost their income.

Is the yellow metal losing itssheen with investors? Willthere be a further fall in itsprice in the medium term?

Is this the right time to invest ingold or must one wait for somemore time to see if there is a fur-ther fall in prices?

These are the questions thatare on the minds of investors andbuyers. However, it is importantto take a look into the backgroundand reasons for the fall before pre-dicting the future of gold.

Analysts, comparing theprice of gold over the last threemonths, were doubtful gold’srising prices due to factors thatcould result in its fall. One of themajor reasons which sparkedthe rally in gold prices interna-tionally during the last four tofive years is instability in theglobal economy which hasforced major economies to pushfor unprecedented measuresboth in terms of fiscal and mon-

etary policy. “Central banks like the Bank

of England, the US FederalReserve, European Central Bankand Bank of Japan have pumpedhundreds of billions of dollarsinto their economies to arrest theimpact of financial crisis. Theinflow of money, through bondbuying programmes of the banksinto the economy, resulted in thegrowth of commodity invest-ments by the people and droveits demand,” says Tapan Trivedi, senior research analyst, Inditrade

derivatives and commodities. The increasing money flow leadto higher inflation and hiked theprice and investment in the yel-low metal during that time.

“The reports on end of mon-etary easing by the Central Bankby this year end instead of in2015, as expected, has invokedanxiety in the markets. Therewon’t be too much money avail-able in the economy with theseizing of monitory easing.Investors fear this may decreasethe demand and further lead to

a fall in prices,” Trivedi says. Due to the result of mone-

tary easing in the last year, investment in gold-backedfunds and particularly the SPDRGold Trust (USA) — the world’slargest exchange-traded fund(ETF) backed by the preciousmetal — registered strongincrease with its holdings soar-ing by more than seven per centto 1350 MT levels, which is thehighest level historically.

“Since the start of 2013though, the fall of investments

SPDR gave raise to concernsabout the ability of gold to gen-erate positive returns in thefuture. Other cues from keyglobal hedge fund managersand financial institutions alsosuggest a subdued outlooktowards bullion, and gold inparticular, based on the updatesfrom CFTC, USA,” Trivedi adds.

There is huge outflow ofmoney from the SPDR with theinvestors selling their ETFs,resulting in the fall of invest-ments in gold. At the same time, there is a fall in demand fromworld’s largest consumers ofgold — India and China. Forinstance, high price levels andduty has curbed buying in thefirst quarter of 2013 in India. Allthese fundamental and technicalfactors have resulted in the fallof gold price.

When asked about mediumterm growth of this metal,Trivedi says, “There may be afurther fall in gold price inmedium term (one-two months)to $1,180 per ounce from its cur-rent rate of $1,369. In Indianrupees, the price may furthercome down to `22,500 per 10gm(24 carat) from its current priceof `25,600. However, investorsor buyers, who are waiting tobuy gold, should start accumu-lating it from now because allassumptions are based on spec-ulation. It is better to buy at least10 per cent now and 30-40 percent at around 24,000 levels andthe rest in 22,000-23,000 levels.”

Trivedi concludes that the“prices of silver may also fall inthe medium term to `38,000from its current price of `43,600.The similar pattern of buyingcan be applied for silver as well. However, silver prefered overgold as a long-term investmentbecause of its value as a pre-cious and industrial metal. Oncethe global economy is back ontrack, there will be a growth indemand for this metal drivingits value.”

14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSThe many ways to make money Leaders in the City have found a novel way to

make a quick buck. Its festival time and they have been pitching that every reli-gious occasion be celebrated on a grand scale, so that they can force officials topush their proposals. It seems that some enjoy festivities all year round.

Amonth after theArgentine pope’ssurprise election tolead a troubledCatholic Church,

Rome hosts another conclavefrom Thursday — this time tofind an Italian president to end acomplex political crisis.

Experts in the Vatican arebeing replaced by a rare breed ofItalian journalists who try todecode the complexities of the“Quirinale” — the palace inRome where Italian presidentsreside and the former home ofpopes and kings.

The unprecedented coinci-dence of a papal election with apresidential one has ledobservers to draw comparisonsbetween the two banks ofRome’s Tiber River — theVatican on one side and the seatof Italian power on the other.

Many refer to inconclusivepolitical negotiations as “blacksmoke” — the method used dur-ing a conclave to signal that nopapal election has taken place.

Italians now are waiting for“white smoke” from the Italianparliament building, where law-makers and regional officialsmeet to elect a president.

“White smoke (the religious

one) and black smoke (the politi-cal one) are getting mixed up,”leftist weekly L’Espresso said inan article comparing the“manoeuvres, pressures and rit-uals” of papal and political elec-tions.

It referred to the post cur-rently held by GiorgioNapolitano as “the pope ofItaly” — who will need a dose ofdivine guidance in trying tobring political parties together toform a government after incon-clusive elections.

Gags apart, there are somesimilarities between the twoprocedures.

The vote is secret — withlawmakers teering curtainedbooths to cast their ballots. Thistime around, though, it will notbe 115 cardinals voting but 1,007deputies, senators and local offi-cials known as “grand electors”.

As with the conclave, no onesteps forward to declare theircandidacy.

Anyone who is really inter-ested in the post is called on toact with discretion and namesonly filter through after longbehind-the-scenes talks.

“The presidential election isa vote with great tactical mobili-ty, with some candidates dis-carded straight away and othersappearing at the last minute,”said philosopher Paolo Floresd’Arcais, editor the leftist jour-nal MicroMega.

And for both the Quirinale

and the Vatican, the issue isreplacing a tired-out octogenari-an.

Now pope emeritus BenedictXVI has just celebrated his 86thbirthday and Napolitano, who isretiring at the end of his seven-year mandate at the age of 87,has said that he “gave it every-thing I could”.

Whoever does get the postfaces the unenviable task of try-ing to form a parliamentarymajority after a February 24-25election that led to a three-waysplit between the left, the rightand a new anti-establishmentprotest party.

The left came first but failedto win an overall majority in par-liament.

The key to the election iswhether Pier Luigi Bersani’s

centre-left coalition will back acandidate who will get votesfrom Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right or one who will have thesupport of the Five StarMovement.

Another similarity with theconclave is that the electionrequires a two-thirds majority inthe first three rounds.

Starting from the fourthround, a simple majority willsuffice — unlike the Vaticanwhere a two-thirds majority isalways needed.

Only two presidents haveever been elected in the firstround — Francesco Cossiga in1985 and Carlo Ciampi in 1991.In 1971, Giovanni Leone waselected after 23 votes — a longprocess with just two votes aday.

A superpower... Really?

Areport by the World Bank says that India accounts for one third of the world'spoor. As we propose to be a superpower by 2020, what have the nation's

leaders planned on doing about the millions among us who sustain themselveson a meagre Rs 65 a day? When crores are blasted in election rallies and otherpersonal conquests, all on money the source of which is questionable in manycases? The world bank's data is only about the accounted ones and we may be

sure that there are more out there unaccounted who cannot manage even ameal a day. Imagine how they sustain themselves when prices of basic com-

modities are going up? They take shelter in tunnels and pipes laid out for con-struction work, feed off what they find edible in garbage cans. And we the fortu-

nate ones make plans of being a superpower... Any such aspiration is worthless,if we cannot improve the lives of those born into utter poverty.

An ode to Britons

While merits or demerits of Margaret Thatcher are atopic best left to the political pundits and the peo-

ple of UK, one must marvel at the freedom of expressionthat country affords to its citizens. UK does not believein holy cows. Even its monarchy is lampooned to theextent that would leave other countries speechless. When Thatcher invites love and hate together for goodreasons, we in India continue to cling to dead horseswhose roles in history remain much to be desired. Onerecalls the abuse and torture of M O Mathai, personalassistant to Jawaharlal Nehru, whose reminiscencesevoked strong passion among Congress netas.

Warsaw ghetto:Little left

MAJA CZARNECKAAgence France-Presse

Afew buildings, somecobblestones, a syn-

agogue: almostnothing remains of the Warsaw

Jewish ghetto set up by NaziGermany in World War II.Only a chunk is left of the

wall that isolated around 480,000of the capital’s Jews before

the Germans deported most ofthem to their deaths.

“The Germans completelydemolished this neighbour-

hood,” said Jacek Leociak,co-author of the “The

Warsaw Ghetto: A Guide to thePerished City”.

They razed it after crushing theWarsaw ghetto uprising, when afew hundred young Jews decid-

ed to take up arms against theoccupying Germans.

A year and a half after the ill-fated revolt, which took place 70

years ago on Friday, the Nazisflattened the rest of the city after

a second doomed uprising by thePolish underground.

“The communist regime laterbuilt new housing developments

directly on the rubble,” Leociaktold AFP.

The ghetto’s few surviving hous-es stand on the streets Prozna,

Chlodna and Sienna, which wereincorporated into the rest of the

city after the massive ghettopurge of 1942.

From July to September theNazis dispatched around 300,000

Jews by train to the Treblinkadeath camp east of Warsaw.

With its coat of white paint, thefive-storey residence at Chlodna

20 looks newer than its neigh-bours despite being one of the

ghetto’s rare buildings stillstanding today.

So much so that the news comesas a surprise to one of its long-

time residents.

The Renaissance ManThe secret history of Leonardo da Vinci's tantalising life comes

alive on the new series Da Vinci’s Demons.

POSTNOON [email protected]

In a land of myth, and atime of magic, the destinyof Florence rests on theshoulders of a youngheretic — Leonardo Da

Vinci. Or so the makers ofStarz’s new series would haveus believe. Da Vinci’s Demonstakes us inside the life andtimes of the swash bucklingartist, inventor, connoisseurLeonardo.

Even before the pilot aired, there was a lot of excitementabout the series, which TV vet-erans predicted would beSherlockesque genius combinedwith the naked brutality ofGame of Thrones. But from whatwe have seen of the pilot, DaVinci’s Demons is more an adultversion of Merlin.

Set in 15th century Florence, set against the backdrop of theRenaissance, Leonardo is theproverbial heretic seeking to

expose the fraud of religionwhile championing the cause ofrationality and science. He is asmuch the Helen Gardner’sRenaissance man — of"unquenchable curiosity" and"feverishly inventive imagina-tion"— as he is a narcissistic, misunderstood and opiumsmoking genius who is hauntedby the ghosts of his past.

Before we get on with theplot, be warned, if you are look-ing for a historically accuraterendition, this is not going tobe it. The makers of the show, written by critically-acclaimedDark Knight trilogy co-writerDavid S Goye, take some cre-ative liberties. The show is setin Da Vinci’s twenties, a time-frame that’s supposed to belargely accounted for in thepainter’s history.

The historical fantasy takesoff with the assassination of theDuke of Milan (HughBonneville of Downtown Abbeyfame) leaving the Florence’s

first family, the Medicis partic-ularly vulnerable in the area, ready for picking by theVatican. The Medici’s decideto hold a carnival to win popu-lar support. Enter LeonardoDa Vinci (Tom Riley), painterof nude maidens and inventorof flying machines who isroped in to create a revolution-ary spectacle for the carnival.

A bastard son to the notary(of the Medicis), Leo is eager toprove his worth and bring hisvisionary creations to life. Bycapturing the attention ofLucrezia (Laura Haddock), Leoreaches Lorenzo Medici (Elliot

Cowan) and convinces him totake him as his military engi-neer so he can build Florence itsown army based on Leo’sdesigns. Things go for a tosswhen in a strange encounter, heends up meeting a mysteriousman simply known as “TheTurk” (Alexander Siddig.) Heinforms Leo of an ancient orderwho’s searching for a book ofwisdom, known as the Book ofLeaves. Which needless to say,is also of great value to theChurch. But also somehow con-nected to this is Leo’s childhoodmemories of a cave and arepressed secret (ala Batman/DaVinci Code) which is supposedto tie in with this mystery.

With decent performancesand an intriguing storyline, thepilot makes for an interestingwatch and shows potential. Lestwe forget, know that it’s Arated. Which is tragic consider-ing that all the sex, the violenceand nudity which it points say, adds nothing at all to the plot.

With decent perfor-mances and anintriguing storyline, the show makes for aninteresting watch andshows potential.

VIRUS ATTACKS

Viral infections are quitecommon; they aremostly mild and recov-ery usually occurs

within a week. Typical symp-toms include fever, cough, runnynose, sore throat and body aches.Fever is rarely very high andmostly these infections do notconfine the patient to bed.Complications like ear infection, strep throat and pneumoniasometimes occur and have to betreated promptly.

One of the viruses that oneshould be wary of is theenterovirus. It is not a singlevirus, but a group of viruses thatlike to hang out and thrive in thegastrointestinal tract.Enterovirus is the primary causeof summer rashes in children, which often resemble measles.

Some of the common prob-lems that arise in summer arevomiting, diarrhoea, chickenpox, ulcers, skin rashes and summer cold.

Dr Rajiv Sharan, paediatricianat Tata Motors Hospital,Jamshedpur, says that most ofthese infections or viruses manifestin the form of fever, sore throat, skin rashes, vomiting and loosemotions. “Patients, especially chil-dren with asthma or bronchitis, aremost susceptible to these viruses. Itoccurs due to change in tempera-ture. Diarrhoea occurs to duedrinking contaminated water oreating undercooked, rotten food.In most places, the sewage lines

run alongside the drinking waterlines, osmosis occurs and the dirtywater seeps into the drinkingwater pipes, thus making its con-sumers open to a lot of infections.”

Also, since summer is a timewhen most people like to go onvacations, it is important to makesure that you and your family arevaccinated. Consult your doctorabout the vaccines that are amust for you to avoid infectiousdiseases. The vaccines willdepend upon the place you arevisiting and weather conditions.

The only way one can safely keepdisease like yellow fever, mumps, typhoid, and rubella away is bygetting duly vaccinated.

If you have pets in yourhouse, they could also be carriersof these viruses. Make sure theyare given the proper vaccinesand wash your hands after handling them.

Some of us may be surprisedthat we catch a cold during sum-mer. Yes, cold is not a winter ail-ment alone. The summer coldscaused by enteroviruses general-ly clear up without treatmentwithin a few days or even aweek. Air conditioning itself maycontribute to infection with com-

mon cold viruses. They alsospread through contaminatedsurfaces like door handles, tele-phones and even furniture.

The only way to keep theseviruses away is to maintain per-sonal hygiene and visit the doc-tor if the symptoms persist.

LOS ANGELES: A team ofVirginia Tech researchers hassucceeded in transforming cellu-lose into starch, a process thathas the potential to provide apreviously untapped nutrientsource from plants not tradition-ally thought of as food crops.

YH Percival Zhang, an asso-ciate professor of biological sys-tems engineering in the Collegeof Agriculture and Life Sciencesand the College of Engineering, led a team of researchers in theproject that could help feed agrowing global population.

Starch is one of the mostimportant components of thehuman diet and provides 20-40percent of our daily caloric intake.

The research was publishedthis week in the Early Edition ofthe Proceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences.

Cellulose is the supportingmaterial in plant cell walls and isthe most common carbohydrateon earth. This new developmentopens the door to the potentialthat food could be created fromany plant, reducing the need forcrops to be grown on valuableland that requires fertilizers, pesti-cides, and large amounts of water.

The type of starch thatZhang's team produced is amy-lose, a linear resistant starch thatis not broken down in the diges-tion process and acts as a goodsource of dietary fiber. It hasbeen proven to decrease the riskof obesity and diabetes.

This discovery holds promiseon many fronts beyond food sys-tems, reports Science Daily.

"Besides serving as a foodsource, the starch can be used inthe manufacture of edible, clearfilms for biodegradable foodpackaging," Zhang said.

"It can even serve as a high-density hydrogen storage carrierthat could solve problems relatedto hydrogen storage and distri-bution," he said. IANS

I am trying to lose weightbefore my infertility treat-ment. I was told not to exercisein the afternoon in summer. Can you tell me why not ?It is easier to understand whenyou realise that even motorengines get hot and breakdownin summer! When the outsideenvironment is more than 40degrees Celsius, it becomes diffi-cult for the body to cool down.Exercise itself generates heat; soyou are doubly heating the body, and therefore causing heat stress.

Two-thirds of the heat generatedduring exercise is converted to aninner source of heat, which con-tributes to heat injury. That meansthe body is unable to cool itself tomaintain a healthy temperature, and if one continues to do this, itcan lead to a heat stroke, which isa medical emergency.

Heat stroke refers to bodytemperature above 105 degreesFahrenheit and is associated withmental status changes such as

loss of consciousness or coma. However, prior to the onset ofheat stroke, there may be nausea, dizziness, headache, and diffi-culty with speaking or walking.

Treatment of these symp-toms, known as heat exhaus-tion, involves fluids, sprinklingwater and fanning the patient, and applying ice packs to thehead, neck, abdomen, groin, and under the arms. If there isany evidence of heat stroke,

then it is an emergency, and thepatient needs medical attentionimmediately.

Don't wait until you'rethirsty before you drink water.Drink often and drink regularly.Do not rely on thirst. By the timeyou feel thirsty, there is already asignificant fluid deficit.

Keep track of how muchurine you are passing, and inwhat colour. If it becomes dark-er, it’s a warning sign.

Drink more than just water. When you exert yourself, youlose electrolytes as well as fluid.Replacing the fluid alone (withjust water) can lead to electrolyteimbalances. These imbalancescan be life-threatening.

Aerobics may protectbrain from alcohol damage

US researchers have found that aerobic exercise may protect white matter in the brain from alcohol-related damage.

WASHINGTON: Aerobicexercise, known to slow cogni-tive decline, may also preventor repair damage to the braincaused by alcohol, a new studyhas found.

US researchers found thataerobic exercise may protectwhite matter in the brain fromalcohol-related damage.

Heavy long-term alcoholconsumption leads to neuraldamage that looks similar to thedecline in neurocognitive func-tioning observed as people age, said Hollis C Karoly, a graduatestudent at the University ofColorado at Boulder and corre-sponding author of the study.

"Given that exercise is pro-tective against some

of the neural andcognitive effects

of ageing, itseemed likely

t h a t

aerobic exercise may also workto reverse or prevent some ofthe damage to the brain causedby chronic alcohol consump-tion," Karoly said.

Karoly and her colleagueshad 60 participants (37 men, 23women), drawn from a largerdatabase designed to sharecommon brain and clinical datacollected across studies on alco-hol and nicotine use, undergo adiffusion tensor imaging ses-sion.

All participants also com-pleted measures

of alcohol consumption, loss ofcontrol over drinking, and aero-bic exercise participation.

Study authors then exam-ined relationships among exer-cise, alcohol, and fractionalanisotropy in the superior lon-gitudinal fasciculus, externalcapsule, fornix and superiorand anterior corona radiata, aswell as self-reported loss of con-trol over drinking.

"This study found that therelationship between alcoholconsumption and white matterdepends upon how much peo-ple exercise," said Karoly.

"For individuals with lowlevels of aerobic exercise, heavydrinking was linked to poorerwhite matter health, but forthose with greater exerciseinvolvement, the relationshipbetween alcohol and white mat-ter health was not as strong,"said Susan F Tapert from the

University of California,San Diego.

"Although wed o n ' t

know yet if the exercise is pro-tecting against alcohol-relateddamage, or if it is a sign of fac-tors linked to brain health, thisis a very compelling study.

"This suggests that individ-uals who have experiencedalcohol-related brain problemscould possibly use exercise tohelp recover from those effects;studying people over time willtell us if this is in fact the case,"Tapert said.

"Aerobic exercise appears tobe a promising candidate fordecreasing alcohol-relatedbrain damage.

“Certainly clinicians coulduse these findings to supportprescribing aerobic exerciseprograms as an adjunct treat-ment for individuals dealingwith psychological or physio-logical problems related to aheavy alcohol-use history,"Karoly said.

The study will be pub-lished in the journalAlcoholism: Clinical &Experimental Research.

Experts say individu-als who have experi-enced alcohol-relatedbrain problems couldpossibly use exerciseto help recover fromthose effects.

For someone who's sotalented and popularamong the audience,Nithya Menen, quitespectacularly, man-

ages to stay away from thelimelight, except when shewants to. However, themoment she gets talking aboutfilms, dreams and why shedoesn't want to be like every-one else, it's easy to fall for hercharm and ingenuity. Thatalone is refreshing. It is alsoone of the reasons why youbegin to understand thatthere's lot more to her thanwhat has been written. Herupcoming film Gunde JaariGallanthayindhe is the sixthTelugu film in her career andover the past couple years, shewas so adamant about whatshe didn't want to do in filmsthat the number of offers shehas rejected easily outnumberthe projects she has done sofar. “A lot of people think that Iam not offered big filmsbecause I seem to be acting inrelatively medium budgetfilms. The truth is I havebeen

approached for quite a fewfilms which had top stars andeach time I felt that I didn'twant to do that film, I simplysaid 'no'. Some people cannotcomprehend how someone cansay no to a big star's film, but Idon't see a point in doingsomething which won't makeme happy. By the way, thisrumour that I have an 'attitudeproblem' is completely false,”she quips. Her choices over thepast couple of years have senta strong signal about what sheisn't willing to do and quitesurprisingly, she seems to behappy with the kind of workshe seems to be getting. ”It'sgood that a lot of filmmakershere understand that I won'tdo certain type of things.Naturally, I lose out on severalfilms but I am okay with it,”Nithya Menen says. Whatabout getting used to the factthat she's popular? After all,she had once confessedthat she tries to stayaway from limelightas much as possi-ble becauseshe does-n't

But now, I am slowly try-ing to get used to it,” she con-fesses. In Gunde JaariGallanthayindhe, she's playingone of the three lead roles andit's her second film withNithin. The duo had earlierteamed up for Ishq which wasa surprise hit last year. Ask herwhat made her say yes to thisfilm, she reveals, “There's a lotof situational comedy in thefilm, but more impor-tantly, Iloved

my characterisation. It hasshades of grey, which is not soeasy to find in Telugu films.Usually, the heroine is a bub-bly girl and it's quite one-dimensional. In Gunde JaariGallanthayindhe, I got a chanceto do a lot more.” The promoshave clicked quite well andsurprisingly, she has danced inone of the songs. As soon aswe ask her about her dancingskills, she bursts out laughingand says, “I am a good dancer. In fact, I can pull off a classicaldance or simple moves likewhat we did in Ishq. But I havenever got used to the chore-ographed movements, somaybe that's one reason whyyou never see me dance likeothers.” Like most of her other

films, Nithya has sunga song in the

film. Is it some-thing which

she enjoysdoing?

“Thank god, I get a chance tosing regularly in films. I thinkAnup Rubens likes my voiceand he keeps asking me to singmore. Singing is one thingwhich keeps me happy and Iwould love to sing more, but Idon't think I'll go out of myway to look for opportunities. If it happens, it happens,” shesays. So what's next? “I am ona three-month break fromwork. I have been planning ondoing this for a very long timeand I have decided not to workat all till June,” she reveals. What if she gets a film shewouldn't refuse, otherwise, during her vacation? “I willstill say no. Besides, I am notthat desperate to be famous. Idon't see myself acting in filmsfor the rest of my life. Now,don't ask me what I am think-ing about doing next,” shesays. The smile on her faceintact. She hasn't changedmuch, after all.

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let’s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

Not only have most of theplayers put up a decent show, they have also had luck favourthem. The Chennai side who arecurrently placed at the seventhposition on the points tablewould be looking to claim theirthird victory in today’s match.

A win today would pushthem to the fifth position but theDaredevils will surely go all outto spoil this and register thatfirst victory this season — thatvictory which has been evadingthem since a while.
