Post-Op Instructions After an Oral Surgery
No surgery is ever minor, even surgery of the mouth. Let’s face it – it hurts !ut the goo" ne#s is
that after a little time you’ll $e feeling $etter than you "i" $efore.
Of course that’s little consolation in the first couple "ays, an" the $elo# instructions #ill give you
an i"ea of #hat your healing #ill $e li%e.

Avoi" eating, "rin%ing an" rinsing for three hours. !ite the gau)e for the ne't three hours
for a $loo" clot to form an" stop $lee"ing. Apply constant pressure to the gau)e on top of
the #oun".
*on’t touch the #oun" #ith your tongue, finger or anything else. *on’t use any %in" of
local me"ications, as they might cause post-inflammation. *on’t suc% the #oun". Avoi"
smo%ing for at least + hours after the surgery.
lean your mouth after each meal #ith clean #ater or a mi'ture of #ater an" ta$le salt
apply half a tea spoon of ta$le salt into a glass fille" #ith lu%e#arm #ater/.

S#elling
It’s perfectly normal for a surgery to cause s#elling. 0ollo#ing the surgery, opening your mouth
may $e limite" $y s#elling. (his is calle" trismus an" #ill li%ely go a#ay soon after the s#elling
goes a#ay. If it gets #orse or you have trou$le #ith $reathing call an am$ulance.

set it against the chee% for 23 minutes imme"iately after the surgery. 4ou can repeat this after one
hour "uring the first "ay. Applying col" for too long may slo# "o#n the healing process altogether,

After three "ays of the surgery you may #ant to a"vance the healing process an" relieve the pain $y
applying a #arm compression against the chee% near the area #here surgery #as performe"/.
A goo" amount of time to use a #arm compression is 56 to 23 minutes, 5 to 2 times a "ay
for 5 to 2 #ee%s. *on’t over"o it , ho#ever, as you may $urn your s%in.
