Post-Audit Review For Occupational Programs Implemented Under the Provisions of Series 37
West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education
Institution: ____Pierpont Community & Technical College___________________
Program (Degree and Title): __Certificate Applied Science Licensed Practical Nurse___
I. Introduction
The mission of the Practical Nursing Program at Pierpont Community & Technical College is to
provide opportunities for learning, training, and application of knowledge as it relates to the
nursing care of individuals, families, and communities in health and illness. Our mission is
responsive to the emerging technologies in the field of healthcare and the changing health care
needs of individuals, families, and communities. Our goal is to prepare our graduates for
successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses.
The licensed practical nursing program has been designed as a part-time five-semester certificate
program. The curriculum is divided into courses of study proceeding from the simple to the
complex, including theory, college laboratory and clinical practice. Hours and course design
closely follow the West Virginia LPN Board’s suggested curriculum design.
Career opportunities for a licensed practical nurse can be found in hospitals, clinics,
rehabilitation centers, nursing care facilities, physician offices, and in home care. According to
the US Department of Labor, employment of LPN’s is expected to grow by 16 percent between
2014 and 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations, in response to the long-term
care needs of an increasing elderly population and the general increase in demand for healthcare
services. The US Department of Labor reports that as of May 2014 the median annual wage for
LPN’s is $42,490.00.
Graduates may continue in higher education toward an associate’s degree in nursing (ASN).
II. Goal and Objectives
Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program shall be prepared to:
Utilize the nursing process as a guide to assess, plan, implement and evaluate basic
patient care across the life span within the practical nurse’s scope of practice.
Implement the role of nursing in the continuum of care, which includes that of patient
advocate, leader/manager of care, communicator, teacher and member of the health care
team.
Incorporate therapeutic communication to assist patients of all ages in promoting health
and supporting wellness.
Utilize learned nursing skills and current technology as an entry-level practical nurse to
provide and promote compassionate nursing care.
Pierpont Post Audit Review- CAS Licensed Practical Nurse Program Page 2
Integrate ethical, professional, legal responsibility, and accountability into actions and
decisions.
Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth.
Successfully pass the National Council License Examination for Practical Nurses
(NCLEX-PN).
III. Assessment
See Appendix IV for assessment data A-C.
A. Summarize the principal elements of the departmental assessment plan. The plan
must include elements to assess student learning and programmatic outcomes.
B. Provide information on the following elements:
Educational goals of the program
Measures of evaluating success in achieving goals
Identification of the goals which are being successfully met and those
which need attention as determined by an analysis of the data
C. Provide information on how assessment data is used to improve program quality.
Include specific examples.
IV. Curriculum
A. Currently all applicants seeking admission to the licensed practical nursing program
are required to:
Submit completed practical nursing application and all associated documents.
Applicants who are not admitted must reapply if they wish to be considered for
the next academic year.
Applicants must take a pre-nursing entrance test, TEAS (Test of Essential
Academic Skills). A minimum score of 40 percent, adjusted individual total
score, is required for consideration.
Students must meet MATH 0086 and ENGL 0097 competency to enter the
program.
Students must complete 7 Credit Hours of PREREQUISITE CLASSES to enter
the program: HLCA 1170, HLCA 1171, and any math course at the 1100 level or
higher. (MATH 1106 recommended).
An impartial scoring system is used to rank applicants applying to the practical
nursing program. The evaluation process considers Test of Essential Academic
Skills (TEAS test) scores; high school or college grade point average or GED
scores; personal references and experience in the health care field. The highest
scoring applicants will be offered admission into the program.
Program Specific Enrollment Requirements:
To progress in the practical nursing program a student must receive a grade of “C” or
higher in each nursing and required support course. Failure to meet this requirement
will result in a student being dismissed from the program. A student may request
readmission to the program according to the readmission policy, which can be found
Pierpont Post Audit Review- CAS Licensed Practical Nurse Program Page 3
in the licensed practical nursing handbook. To graduate from the practical nursing
program a student must have a grade of “C” or above in every nursing course and a
cumulative 2.0 grade point average.

V. Faculty
Full-time Faculty (non-tenure) = 1 per year
Part-time Faculty (non-tenure) = 0 per year
Adjunct Faculty (non-tenure) = 3 per year
Adjunct faculty members are utilized for all clinical face-to-face courses. Adjunct
faculty are used throughout the LPN face-to-face classroom curriculum as needed.
See Appendix II for further detailed information on faculty credentials.

VI. Enrollment and Graduates
A. See Appendix III.
B. See Appendix III.
C. No graduate students are currently enrolled in either an associate or baccalaureate
degree nursing program.
VII. Financial
A. Indicate the annual total expenditures to deliver the program and source(s) of funding
for the program. Include departmental resources, state appropriated funds, grants and
contracts, state funds and student fees.
The LPN program has a labor budget of $62,783 for full time faculty and $23,020 for
adjunct faculty. Pierpont is funding the salaries of the adjunct faculty partially
through state appropriated dollars and partially through school and program fees.
The full time faculty salary was originally funded through a $220,000 WV Technical
Program Development grant, with continuing salary costs being funded through
Pierpont using state appropriated dollars.
The LPN program has a current operating budget of $7,330 which includes $4,896 in
school fees and $2,434 in program fees paid by students. In addition, there is
$4,274.85 remaining for equipment costs from the Technical Program Development
grant.
B. Identify projection of future resource requirements and source of funding.
Funding will continue for the LPN program through state appropriated funds, tuition
dollars, school fees and program fees. The current model provides sufficient labor
and operating dollars to cover labor costs and operating expenses.
