Duncan was one of 13 members who have been in the club for over 50 years. This says something about the club. We must be doing something right.

Hi Brian, My apologies for not being able to attend dinner in spite of Ronnie's most generous offer.May as well get some fun out my ugly mug so attached pics. can be used as you see fit. Have a great night. Peter Harris. Ed.In response for request for a profile pic. See p4.

Email to Doug,Lyndal and I want to congratulate you on and thank you for the great job you did in making Saturday night's dinner a very enjoyable event. It was an occasion. The time that you had obviously spent in putting together the slides and the considered wit and aplomb with which you delivered the formal parts of the night were much appreciated by all who were there. Thank you, Jon and Lyndal Voller.

VISION: It's all about good news and proper machinery.

Our Presentation Dinner was a great successthanks to much pushing and shoving by all thecommittee members. Those 13 members who have been with the clubfor over 50 years have seen many majorchanges in that time. When the VCCQ was formed 60 years ago I wasreading Dick Tracy comics and thinking thattalking to a watch was dream time stuff. I nowhave one that is way smarter than Dick Tracy'swas. The current generation are watching Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica and thinkingthe same thing. In 2017 I have been invited to the party to celebrate 50 years since we built the Queensland Alumina Plant.About 1000 designers and construction workers attended the plant's 40th birthday and the organisers tell me they can now only locate 44 people for the 50th.I worked for Kaiser Engineers who were then the World's best. The plant was designed tolast 30 years and put out 750,000 tons of alumina per year. After 50 years it is still running and putting out over 5,000,000 tons. All the drawings were done in pencil. 25 years later I did a course in Versacad and decided it would never catch on. 2 years after that I started a course in Autocad 10. Afterthe third lecture I said in the office tea room the next morning that anyone who was not into Autocad would be out of drafting work by the end of the year. Fortunately they all started the next semester. The story with digital photography was the same. Kodak sold their patent because they thought it would never catch on. They have been trying to get back on the boat ever since. Now we are watching the introduction of the autonomous electric car. Telsa have already taken over 400,000 deposits on the Model 3 which will not be available until 2018. Ford and GM would love such an order book. Our Transport Department will still be operating stone age traffic lights when the cars are driverless. After that it's anyone's guess but mine is that it will be all but over in 10 years. A bit laterin the SMART STATE. (I am oftentimes wrong). Manually driven cars may be banned fromthe roads and our vintage vehicles may be restricted as are the horse and cart. Many drivers will still be clinging to their lead pencils as the IC powered transport is put out to pasture with the hay burners.I believe our club focus should be on the important stuff. See you all at the next event.

VCCQ'S NEW COMMITTEE.What a relief when Henry Hancock put up his hand to fill the vacant position as club secretary. No one wanted to follow in Frank's huge footprints. The secretary for BHP Billiton would not have been more capable. Hopefully with our 60th year over we will go back to a slacker pace.I note also that the committee of QHMC has also changed. Craig Williams has taken over as President and Graham Allum as Secretary with Alex Connors as Treasurer. We wish them every success. Thanks to Christine Stevens and her outgoing committee for their many years of involvement and hard work.

MARITIME MUSEUM. From the desk of the C.E.O.Urgent Call for Assistance. For the last few years QMM has enjoyed the assistance of the Federal Government Work for the Dole program. These people have manned our Reception, Ticket Booth and Shopallowing us to open 7 days a week to the Public. It appears that impending changes to this program will mean this assistance will no longer be available. We have preliminary advice that in October this year WFD will cease which will leave a massive gap in our staffing levels that we will need to supplement with extra volunteers.Firstly, if any of you are able to offer direct assistance it would be highly appreciated, if you are unable to assist in person, can we please enlist you to spread the word in your private social networks, family, friends, neighbours and colleagues etc. Please circulate our predicament in this way and hopefully the 400 plus members can reach a few thousand people with the call for help and perhaps enlist some new willing volunteers. The customer service role is the single most important role our volunteers can undertake for us, the visitor experience is paramount to our survival as an organisation. Hopefully with your assistance we can overcome this situation and continue to open to the public.Ian Jempson C.E.OEd. The VCCQ is only one of the many carers for our history in Australia.

COORPAROO CARS AND COFFEE.On the first Saturday of each month many carclubs meet in Turbo drive for a coffee andnatter. I think our member Greg Riddel hassomething to do with the organising. The gathering has continued to grow so thatthere are well over 200 cars there on anySaturday. They start arriving about 6am withseveral coffee vans that cater for their thirst.I went there on August 6 and ran into quite afew of our members. Some pics shown, courtesyof Brian Carson.

MY MAN IN MANAPOURI.Invercargill Classic Motorcycle Mecca.Approximately 200 bikes and sidecars plus some small cars have arrived from Nelson for the motorcycle museum. Each trip down in the Richardson’s converted car transporter was 30 to 35 bikes. The Outdoor World building in Tay Street is being renovated using many of the original fittings and is planned to be open for the Burt Munro week. It will definitely be a tourist attraction for New Zealand and overseas visitors. With the Transport World, Motorcycle Museum and the E. Hayes Collection, a full day will be required to view all. There will be close to 500 motorcycles with owners in Invercargill. Approximately 33,000 people have been to Richardson’s Transport World since its opening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD-RIcpO8Do

1922 Mergola [pictured] This unusual bike was powered by a radial fixed crankshaft rotating cylinder WW1 aircraft type motor mounted in the front wheel. I asked the guy in charge if he had ridden it. He said no but he had seen the boss fall off it a few times!

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SOUTHLAND BRANCH OF THE VCCNZ.As I write this report I have literally just returned from the 70 th Annual General Meeting held at the Novotel Hotel in Rotorua. A couple of things I would like to mention. There was an open and frank discussion about the Dunedin International Rally and the financial loss incurred. Murray Trounson a charted accountant will review all rally expenses and report back to the management committee. There was an option to cancel the rally before it started but the losses would still have been too high, we would have lost the $70,000.00 deposit for the venue which was non-refundable, as well as many others.

GREEN CARS – David Fryer.Interesting emails on electric SUV (So Un-Vintage) cars in the July rag, but your correspondents forgot to mention the cost of replacing the large number of very expensive batteries. This can be an eye-watering exercise for owners, but it's also a factor in running costs. The figures provided failed to mention this point, though I concede conventional I.C.E. cars have maintenance issues as well.As for your Volvo 240 being a candidate for green awards - I for one am not convinced. True, there is some merit in driving an older car in that it saves on raw materials and energy consumption used in the manufacturing process. But the 240 is a very heavy car with the aerodynamics of a house brick, and it still generates Volvo jokes today. (ie, What's the difference between a Volvo driver and a porcupine? Answer: the porcupine has its pricks on the outside........).A better example of a green car would surely be the Citroën 2CV “Tin Snail” - a much despised SUV car for sure (in VCCQ circles at least), but it first appeared before the war, so it surely deserves a mention. From the front, it looks like afrog in a fairground mirror; theside profile bears an uncannyresemblance to an invertedrubbish skip on wheels; but onreflection, it’s half-a-tonne offun. The roll-back roof wasalmost certainly inspired by asaucy sardine can, thediminutive stem-mountedheadlamps were surely inheritedfrom a sight-impaired escargot, but the lift-off doors and flip-flopwindows were a big hit withcircus clowns. The eccentric exterior is matchedby an even more eccentric air-cooled engine. With a capacity of just 602cc (less than a pair of baked bean cans), the tiny two-pot screamer can only be described as numerically challenged. When activated, it palpitates inside a cavernous void beneath a large curvaceous bonnet that resembles the bow of a shipwrecked dinghy, sadly without the prospect of rescue. The diminutive donk may have had the power of a Parisian poodle in a peddlo, but it has the heart of a lion cub on steroids. For those who like statistics, 0 - 100kph (zero to fearoin a Tin Snail) can be measured with an ordinary cuckoo clock, but you may have to rewind it along the way and there is also a risk of the cuckoo expiring in the process. The good news is you don’t need to be an eccentric Francophile to keep a Tin Snail any more than you need a beret on a bidet, nor do you need to be an onion short of a bunch.I first developed a taste for the saucy escargot on a Churchill Fellowship in Blighty, and it was love at first sight. In fact, I loved it so much I ended up with three of them! So I would to think I qualify to comment on their green credentials. Not only does the Tin Snail run on the smell of an oily rocket leaf, it consumes the absolute bare minimum in construction materials and energy. Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention they are a hoot to boot. In this respect, they should be issued free to anyone suffering depression. And for those who want to complain about valuable magazine spacebeing wasted on SUV cars, please be advised this correspondent's Complaints Department is closed until further notice..........… David FryerPS: I shall endeavour to write about my genuine vintage cars in future.Ed. I will stick with the dreaded Volvo.

AMAROO.Got the latest edition of the magazine, thanks. I was interested to see the bit about the first classic meet at Amaroo. I think it was the one I went to with my friend, Trevor Chappell. He and I helped George Gilltrap with the F1 Ferrari which used to live in the museum on the Gold Coast. I think it later ended up in the Tom Wheatcroft collection at Donington. Doug Whiteford drove it round the track, sliding and spinning all the time because the old tyres were so hard. David BurrowsDear David,Thanks for this – I am forwarding it on to Brian and Joe who wrote the piece.Joe is right about the lack of pre-war cars in historic meets these days. I don’t bother with anything other than the Phillip Island historics these days. It’s all tin tops – I never was interested in seeing Escorts going fast when they were new and unlike a fine wine, nothing has changed in 40 years. Cheers, DougFrom Joe Wilson. We were there and racing the Morgan three wheeler with the side cars. These early Amaroo meetings with cars and bikes were the greatest!!The Ferrari had been rebuilt under Richard Croston’s house at Strathpine by a group of George's mates. It was driven at Amaroo by Noel Tuckey with great gusto. I think Noel was associated in some way with Trev. Chappell. The Morgan that Trevor had, and I thinkstill has, was known as the Plus 6. The only Morgan to be fitted with a 6 cylinder motor at that stage. (Triumph 2000). Oh for the “good old days”

FROM DY TO Peter HENSON.Morning PeterSome follow up on the tank. Out, soaked inoxalic and have done the POR treatment.Quite a job and takes longer than addingtogether the times on the instructions! That rust-mud had got through everything, including the new in line filter I fitted beforethe trip last year. I cut it in 2 to show theextent. Also into carbs and so much flushingof fuel line as well. And of course when you have stuff out, you can't help but strip and paint....So quite a largish job.New gauze tank filter has a drain plug thoughtfully inserted, which will make draining thetank easier in future. Ed. What a great idea.

Application for membership of the VCCQ?MEPHISTO. - A7V STURMPANZERWAGEN 506

THE ONLY REMAINING GERMAN TANK FROM WORLD WAR ONE.MEPHISTO was manufactured in 1917 as part of an initial order of 100 A7V chassis by the German Ministry of War. Final assembly was carried out by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft at Berlin-Marienfeld.The order was never completed fully.Only 20 chassis were used for armoured tanks, while some further chassis were used for supply vehicles. In the first batch of 10 tanks which included Mephisto, eight were designed as “Female” tanks fitted with eight heavy machine guns and two as “Male” tanks fitted with a British designed 57mm cannon and six machine guns. The Germans had captured 185 of these cannons made by the British Maxim-Nordenfelt Company and found they were ideal for mounting in a tank due to their short 150mm recoil and effective range up to 3000 metres.

The vehicle had a caterpillar tracked chassis and was powered by two Daimler 75KW engines each having a capacity of 17.4 litres and four cylinders. Fully loaded with fuel, ammunition and personnel these tanks weighed 33 tonnes and could travel at over 10 km per hour which was twice the speed of the British Mark IV tank. The main design problem was the poor visibility from the driver’s position and an inability to cross wide trenches and shell holes. This eventually led to the capture of Mephisto. Each tank had a crew of at least 18 men but as many as 26 were carried on occasions. They consisted of:Tank Commander (Leutnant)1 Vice-Sergeant Major (Vizefeldwebel)1 NCO driver (Unteroffizier)1 reserve driver2 mechanics

1 signaller1 NCO gunner(Unteroffizier)2 other rank gunners12 Machine gunners.

Inside was incredibly noisy and very hot particularly for the Commander and driver who rode on a platform above the engines. Temperatures of 60 degrees C were reported and when the opportunity arose the crews would ride on top of the tanks and take their chances.

Mephisto was chassis number 506 and was initially constructed as a female with the eight machine guns however was later converted to a male by fitting the 57 mm cannon to the front in place of two machine guns. It was part of the first tank detachments(Abteilungen) ordered by the Ministry of war on 29th of September 1917 which consisted of one female and four male tanks Abteilung 1. They were inspected by Kaiser Wilhelm and Field Marshal von Hindenburg on 27th of February 1918. Hindenburg was not impressed and is claimed to have said that “They probably would not be much use but since they have been built we might as well use them”.Hindenburg’s criticism was misplaced however and after midnight on the 21st of March at St.Quentin the first German tank attack of the war commenced as part of a huge offensive against the British Fifth Army. The tanks supported troops who had penetrated deep into the forward zone where Mephisto and a supporting A7V broke through several strong -points despite heavy machine gun and rifle fire directed at them. The cannon on Mephisto quickly subdued the British opposition and the survivors surrended.Following this success Mephisto was involved in Germany’s largest mass tank attack of the war involving 13 A7Vs on Villers-Bretonneux on the 24th of April 1918. Despite fog, dust and smoke which made visibility difficult the tanks quickly took out the British strong-points and the supporting storm–troops completed the task with whole British companies cut off and surrendering. By 11am the town was taken and most of the tanks returned to their assembly point at the Marcelcave sugar factory.

Mephisto had joined the attack on the heavily fortified Monument Farm as part of six tanks from Group 2 attacking south of the town. As Mephisto moved through an apple orchard surrounding the farm it fell into a large shell hole and could not be extricated. There it remained until late July. For all this effort the taking of Villers-Bretonneux was reversed in the early hours of the 25th of April by a daring attack by Australian and British troops which threw out the German defenders so that by the 27th the front lines were virtually as they had been before the offensive began.

Mephisto remained stranded 2km inside the German lines and after dark two attempts were made to salvage it using trucks and hand tools but to no avail and the decision was taken to prepare the tank for demolition but for some reason this was not carried out. Mephisto was then used by the Germans as a strong-point for the continued fighting in the sector until the night of the 17th of July when allied outposts were established beyondthe tank by the 26th Battalion which consisted of two Companies of Queenslanders and two of Tasmanians.

The Battalion’s Commanding Officer Major J. A. Robinson was keen to salvage Mephisto and planned an operation for the 22 July. The tank lay in full view of the Germans so the operation had to be carried out at night with all precautions made to avoid discovery. To disguise the operation a light artillery barrage was launched on the German lines and aircraft flew low over the front.

Two gun carrier tanks with a detail of 23 men from the 1st Gun Carrier Company and supported by 12 men from the 26th Battalion crept forward from Villers-Betonneux. By 9pm the recovery tanks had been attached to Mephisto and after having its tracks carefully oiled to prevent noise reaching the German lines the tank was extricated from the shell hole back through the orchard and camouflaged among the trees.

Taken to the 5th Tank Brigade demonstration ground near Amiens, Mephisto became an object of interest to visiting troops and many fittings were removed by enthusiastic souvenir hunters. Graffiti and murals were painted on the sides and individual soldiers wrote their names on the armour plate. Moves were made to secure the tank as a war trophy for Queensland by the Queensland Premier T.J. Ryan who had to seek permission from the Prime Minister W.M. (Billy) Hughes. By the time Mephisto was loaded on the SS Armagh on the second of April 1919 this matter was not resolved and the ship was heading for Sydney.

En route for Australia the decision was taken to divert the tank to Brisbane apparently onthe instructions of Dr.C.E.W. Bean. It arrived on the 2nd of June 1919 to the surprise of the Queensland Government who again enquired if it was to remain in Brisbane. A reply said it was and recommended taking delivery. Mephisto was unloaded on the Norman Wharf in early June and on midnight the 21st of August two Council steamrollers were attached and hauled Mephisto on its own tracks to the Queensland Museum in Gregory Terrace. A deal of damage was caused to the roads and corners during the tow however the tank was successfully placed in front of the Museum building by 11am on the 22nd. There it remained under a roofed structure for the next 50 years .Again Mephisto was moved in 1970 to another part of the museum grounds where it was sand blasted and repainted and also received its cannon back from loan at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. In 1986 the tank was relocated to the Queensland Cultural Centre and then to the Queensland Railway Workshops Museum where it was conserved and wrapped in protective plastic covering. At the time of writing it is on loan to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and is due to be returned in April 2017 and be displayed in a new gallery at the Queensland Museum.

VCCQ VISIT TO TRADECOAST CENTRAL HERITAGE PARK.WEDNESDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER.

Since I recommended this visit I thought that I had better put on my Royal Historical Society hat and give you some history on the location:In 1829 Captain Patrick Logan who was the third Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony made a decision to send 150 male convicts to set up the Eagle Farm Agricultural Establishment. By that time the number of convicts in Brisbane Town was over 900 and the established plantings of maize, wheat and potatoes at South Brisbane, New Farm andthe site of the old botanic gardens were struggling to cope with the ever increasing population of naughty persons, military and officials.Logan reported to Governor Darling in September 1829:I have commenced the new agricultural establishment and have selected one hundred and fifty men and I propose to increase them to two hundred as soon as there are quarters for them; a slab house is now being prepared for their temporary accommodation and afterwards to be used as a barn. I shall defer putting up other buildings until the arrival of The Director of Public Works. I propose to take one thousandacres into cultivation but if necessary it can be increased to any extent as there is an extensive tract of fine land in the immediate neighbourhood that will require very little clearing. Mr Parker has taken charge of the new establishment.Everyone got stuck in and the lads cleared 700 acres by hand as the rules did not allow the use of oxen to pull ploughs. A number of buildings were erected during 1831 being oftimber slab on brick foundations and large quantities of grain and spuds were produced with excess being sent to Norfolk Island. All was good until the dreaded lurgy struck in 1832 in the form of Malaria which caused the site to be abandoned leaving only a skeleton crew who had turned into skeletons.A total of 145 second offender women were sentenced to Moreton Bay between 1829 and1837. The first female prisoners were accommodated in a purpose built building known as the female factory. It was erected on the site of the present General Post office in Queen Street in 1829.The close proximity of female prisoners to the main male convict settlement was always a concern to the Commandants and in an attempt to reduce the number of illicit relationships and to maintain better control the more rebellious females were transferred to Eagle Farm. The Commandant mainly responsible for that move was Captain Foster Fyans, the fifth Commandant of the penal colony from 1835 to 1837. He was previously Commandant of Norfolk Island and came with a fearsome reputation however records show that he in fact authorised forty percent less floggings than his predecessor. By 1836 the number of male prisoners was reducing due to release and removal back to Sydney. The 78 women prisoners at that time represented 19 percent of the convict population and their close proximity to the male inmates caused continuing problems for Fyans. Sexual forays between the women and soldiers as well as officials continued despite the high stone perimeter walls of the female factory topped with broken glass. Fyans personally guarded the building at night by “bar iron” while women were gradually transferred to Eagle Farm. In August 1836 Fyans caught the Chief Constable climbing over the wall using “an ingenious ladder”. This prompted him to reduce female numbers in Brisbane Town to “fourteen of the oldest.” By 1837 all women prisoners were stationedat Eagle Farm. The Eagle Farm Women’s Prison and Factory consisted of a Supervisor’s cottage with walls plastered internally and externally, with detached slab kitchen at rear. A two-roomed hut occupied by male convicts and two-roomed hut serving as matron’s quarters, with another room under construction and a slab kitchen at rear. All were slab buildings including the Female Factory which comprised a number of four-roomed accommodation buildings; a store, a school, a hospital (plastered) and workhouse, each of one room; a two-roomed building housing the cook house and needle room; and a block of six cells.

The area was surrounded by a double fence, the outer being a stockade of poles with “good sharp tops”, 17 feet (5.2 metres) high, 320 feet (97 metres) long and 311 feet (94metres) deep .This long grass assisted the continuing dalliances with the soldiers who were forbidden tocross over the bridge at Breakfast Creek under threat of severe punishment. Fyans complained to his superiors that he now had more trouble keeping the military under control than the prisoners! The females caught in these circumstances were subject to being placed in solitary confinement in tiny cells made of “strong gum slabs”, were placedin irons, or suffered head shavings.Further reduction in the convict population eventually lead to the closure of the female prison and in May 1839 the remaining fifty seven women were removed back to Sydney. In 2014 Tradecoast’s Bob Tucker authorised an archaeological dig on the site resulting in the discovery of part of the foundations of the Matron’s cottage. This has remained open for all to see and a reinforced glass cover is being designed to protect it. Apart from the female factory there are two important relics from World War 2 being the Allison engine testing beds and Hangar 7.The testing beds consist of two brick structures and several concrete pads with blast walls between. Numbers of rebuilt V12 Allisons were placed on stands and run at high revs until failure or passed to go back into action. The blast walls were to stop flying con rods, propellors etc if an engine blew up.Hangar 7 was erected in 1942 and was used by US and Australian engineers to rebuild Japanese fighters to flying condition. Several Zeros were built from bits and pieces collected from the jungles of New Guinea and flown over Brisbane by brave US and OZ pilots to see why they could out- manoeuvre Kittyhawks and Lightnings. This frightened the populace despite the roundels being removed. Finally the interpretive centre houses a genuine V12 Allison with a war history. It is mounted on its original timber frame and protected by glass. Upstairs is a museum of convict relics and many historic photographs of Eagle Farm in early and war years. A video runs continuously showing black and white film of the past. You can stand on the balcony and view all of the heritage site and read the informative signage. There is a lift to get there if you don’t want to climb stairs.Best thing of all folks is that it is FREE! Lots of parking outside so bring your old one. (Car)When you go over the bridge into Schnieder Road from Kingsford Smith Drive keep on the right lane and turn right into the car park as soon as you leave the bridge. The Interpretive centre is on the corner with the open grassed area behind.Hope you can all make it! See you there at 10am.Dean

VCCQ YULGILBAR CASTLE VISIT IN 2017 JUNE 3.On Sunday Aug 14 I jumped on the chookchaser and headed south through Beaudesert to Tabulam on the Bruxner Hwy.From here I went south on Plains Station Rd. and stoppedat the property of Leanne and Tony Hart. Leanne noworganises visits to the castle to which we have booked avisit for the club on Saturday June 3 next year.We BYO lunch at the castle and then follow the ClarenceRiver down to it's mouth in Yamba where we plan toovernight.I rode from there, past the castle, along very remote butbeautiful roads to Yamba where I stayed overnight at thePacific Hotel overlooking the ocean. Inexpensiveand excellent. Home via the coast road. Total730km round trip.I had a very pleasant lunch with Tony and Leanneat which I discovered that Tony was into vintageracing in the eightys. He had a special with avintage Riley 12 chassis with a twin cam Jaguarengine. It looked like the Dalro Jag but was red andwas called the Foster Holden. Anyone remember it?He had pics of it taken at Lakeside in “84” withJoe's Morgan and Rob Rowe's Amilcar.Castle visits are limited to 9 a year andthere is a long waiting list. Entry is $25a head and all money goes to charity.Get your name on the list of startersearly. It will be a great weekend.

Tony had a couple of old Buick straight 8s on the property a few years ago. He sold them to Bill Jarrott of Tenterfield in 82. Bill has since died. Anyone know where they are now?

An interesting bit of history on the area by David Manson. Roseville, NSWIs there anyone in the Club with the slightest interest in horseracing? Perhaps there was once (think of Jim Bendrodt, owner of both racehorses and a Speed Twenty) – but no more. These days petrol-heads and punters are leagues apart. So the book I'm reading at the moment, "Horsemen of the First Frontier (1788 - 1900) and The Serpent's Legacy" by Keith R Binney, is not one I chose because I like horses, but because it treats early Australian history from an unusual angle. Unusual, to say the least – there's plenty of sex in it, but it's all between horses and mares. And who should crop up, about 300 pages in, but a stack of Alvis surnames? Andrew Nash, 1776 to 1855, gets four pages – he certainly wasn't an ancestor of Stan Nash, but

The Vintage Car September 2016 Page 18

he owned the Woolpack Hotel at Parramatta and imported a Maceroni steam coach in 1836, becoming the first Australian to own a self-propelled road vehicle. Most, but by no means all, of the book's information about Andrew is sound, because it's borrowed from an old article of mine!If that's a bit remote, how about, on p 338, Charles Frederick Tindal, the first owner of Rob Gunnell's "Smokey"? His grandfather, Captain Charles Tindal RN, sent his eldest son Charles Grant Tindal to Australia in 1843 in charge of some stud rams intended for the Ogilvie family in the Upper Hunter at Denman. CG Tindal worked with the Ogilvies for some years, mainly at Yulgilbar on the Clarence, until he bought his own property 'Ramornie' in the same area in 1852. Over the next fifty years he built up a chain of cattle properties, together with a canning works, enormously profitable when cattle were cheap and demand in Europe was high. The author's closing comment on CG Tindal is that he "was not a flamboyant owner, nor a punter – he was simply a shrewd, knowledgeable pastoralist and businessman, who endeavoured to breed the very best in pedigree livestock". CG died in England in 1914, aged 90.His son Charles Frederick Tindal (the Frederick probably honoured an uncle, drowned in the Clarence in 1855), born in 1858, managed a number of the family's properties duringhis father's frequent absences in England, retiring eventually to 'Bona Vista', Armidale, where he died in 1938 – so he would have been 67 when he bought the 12/50. Perhaps aretirement present to himself?Naturally, that's not all. A neighbour of the Tindals, at 'Nytnboida' station, and a fellow stud breeder and member of the Clarence River Jockey Club, was Charles Shannon, grandfather of our founder member Doug Shannon, one-time owner of my 12/40 (now owned by Anthony de Young). Ed. Thank you David – gripping stuff.

WHAT YOU HAVE MISSED!!

Saturday August 13th Presentation Dinner. Those who attended seemed to have a great evening butunfortunately the several flights of stairs meant that numbers weredown on last year, due to difficulty of access. Mike’s band wasfantastic, as usual, playing music enjoyed by the demographic ofVCCQ members. “Mustang Sally” was an opportunity to get BruceMcPhail & Margaret Hanrahan onto the floor – however the newaddition to Bruce’s stable would not make it onto the VCCQRegister!! The new Committee will need to consider a more appropriate venueas well as a possible day event, such as a lunch, for next year. Timing is another consideration due to wanting to present the Trophies shortly after they are awarded at the end of June Concours, as well as the AGM which is scheduled into the Calendar for August.Mentioning Concours, it is well worth recording the report by Paul Field, the new Administrator of Ormiston House. For those who were unable to be at the August meeting, I shall quote from his letter:“ I don’t know if you have ever seen the sort of income we receive on the days you have your Concours. I have collated them for the last few years for your interest. Do not be concerned about the fluctuations between the years. It is totally inevitable.2012 - $2,926.00: 2013 - $2,624.95: 2014 - $3,649.50: 2015 - $4,316.00: 2016 - $3,522.30

This can be foundon page 15.It is the stories told of the history of the place whichmake this visit a MUST. We are fortunate enough tohave Bob Tucker to take us on a fascinating journeythrough the Convict Days until the last war, especiallythe Japanese Offensive. There is a café onsite which will open during our visit.New owners are expected soon so negotiations are ongoing. We plan to meet in the special car park onsite at 10am. There is NO CHARGE for entry – audio tours are also available but you would not want to miss the stories Bob has to tell of what was happening here in years past. Ed. Lunch after maybe at Brekkie Creek.Meet 10am at South Car park– see map attached. From the City, drive along Kingsford Smith Drive, turn off to the left on SCHNEIDER ROAD – No 87 it is wellsignposted to TRADECOAST CENTRAL. The left turnoff is after the Airport access road overpass – keep in left lane and you can’t go wrong!!Be aware – roadworks at the City end of Kingsford Smith Drive may hold up traffic, so allow plenty time. Saturday, September 10th Brookfield Country Market 8am to 1pmOnce again, Edith McPhee, Duncan’s wife has asked that we bring along some of the VCCQ cars to add to the ambience of this Annual Country Market. All kinds of things are for sale – in the past magnificent strawberries, locally grown in season produce, as well as local music and entertainment are also on site. Please advise Ronnie or Brian if you would like to join us for this country meets town event. Wednesday October 19th COMMISSARIAT STOREDean has very kindly invited Club Members to attend a mid-week barbeque at the oldest building in Queensland. There is parking in front of the store & the midweek journey into the City should allow us to display our Vintage & Classic Cars. Helen, the Queensland Historic Society Manager of the Commissariat store will be on hand as well as Dean to relate the importance of this building to our history. Times will be given in the next magazine but please put this date in your diaries.

Sunday, November 27th Pre-Christmas LUNCHThere was disappointment last year, as we did not include this visit to the Vue Restaurant, just outside Boonah township, to our Calendar of Events. Consequently, Brianhas made a booking for this Sunday morning outing for a buffet lunch. It is a lovely drivefrom Brisbane on least travelled roads, ideal for us to enjoy driving our special vehicles and have lunch in a relaxed atmosphere with friends. More details in next magazine.

A DOG FIGHT BUT NOT OF THE CANINE VARIETY – Ronnie BrownJust for the record, “my dog fight” was the way DeanPrangley referred to my altercation with a roadtrain, on ajoint VCCQ & Alvis CC NSW Rally earlier this year. Most of you will have heard how and when this happenedbut I thought it may be worth documenting how thishappened and the ” aftermath” – there is light at the endof the tunnel !!My Alvis TC 21/100dhc developed an electrical problem enroute to Inverell. I called RACQ after the car just stoppedon a corner in Toowoomba, whilst parking for morning teawith Frank and Ann Corbett, owners of the oldest Alvis inAustralia – 12/40/50 Ducksback as Frank calls it. A loosewire behind the dash board was diagnosed as the problemand both cars set off for Inglewood, our first night’s stop.Unfortunately twice en route my Alvis just died on me,pulling over on country roads, Frank’s nimble fingersworked magic and got me going again. My worries reallystarted when we had to drive a short stretch on theCunningham Highway about 40 kms out of Inglewood.Looking in my tiny rear view mirror, with the top down, Icould see a 4WD plus caravan right on my tail and directlybehind that what looked like the frontloader of a truck ofsome kind. This was not a happy place to be in thebeautiful Alvis my husband John spent 4 years of his liferestoring, so following VCCQ etiquette I saw a laybylooming up and decided to pull over. I was probablytravelling at about 50 mph or 80 km/hr and the Alvisbrakes were doing their very best to slow the car on thegravelly surface. The end of the layby was marked with awhite stick in rough grass and I was rapidly running out ofspace. I saw the 4WD towing the caravan pass, I saw theRoadtrain frontloader go past and I counted the “dogs”(the name of the individual trailers being towed ) ONE;TWO –thank goodness I can start moving back onto thehighway. Little did I know that this was a three doggedRoadtrain !! These are only allowed on certain outback roads and not near large towns soI had never seen a three dogged vehicle before. Now, whether the sway on the last dog was sufficient to hit the front bumper & bounce off the driver’s side wheel arch or whether I was too close to the road edge I do not know. All I do know is that there was an almighty BANG, the heavy Alvis bounced about then continued along the long straightstretch of highway infront of me. The roadtrain was long gone. I doubt whether the drivereven knew of the accident. Ahead the 4WD and caravan had also pulled over into the next layby, after experiencing the menacing presence behind. I pulled over to examine the damage to find the bumper had been torn as far as the overrider at almost right angles to it. The wheel arch showed scrapes where tyre marks had dented the panel & the wing mirror was broken. Seven years bad luck or just in need of replacement??Alvis are amazing vehicles, my family with driving experience in outback Qld. tell me if I had been in a modern vehicle, the force of impact would have thrown me up in the air and probably turned the car right over.Inglewood is a small town on the major highway, one could hear the roadtrains passing all night long. The town services the passing trade but not the RACQ garage attendant. He did not even get out of his comfortable seat when I asked for help so it was only

when we reached Texas the next morning was assistance available. We’d arranged to meet John & Wendy Wagstaff there and just on the corner of the main street, where theirMotel was situated, the Alvis stopped once more. Frank’s nimble fingers would not tickle it back into firing mode. A helpful local drove me to the other end of the main street to the RACQ garage and a tow truck picked up ALV154 for further assistance. This is the story of wonderful people, the support of VCCQ club members and maybe a few contacts for Brisbane Vintage Car Club drivers so my thanks to:-John Wagstaff, whotook off thedamaged bumperand carried it in histrayback Rolls forthe rest of the Rallyand back toBrisbane.Eric Smith forassisting the TexasAuto electrician, bypointing out themost likelyoffending loosewire – Eric & Irenealso own a 3 litreAlvis.Brian & Doug forstopping as theydrove throughTexas – their moralsupport and thecrowd gathering around my damaged Alvis, brought pressure to fix the problems and get all of us moving again.Derek Dixon for his assistance as my Alvis developed an oil leak which sprayed all over the engine bay and caused anxious times as tothe severity of the problem. Ron Thorpe whokindly put my Alvis on his hoist and to thegathered mechanics for their assurance, I couldcontinue the Rally.Once back in Brisbane, Graham Singersuggested I have Steve Bodrog (no bog here)repair the bodywork and Tony at Pacific Plating(32602121) to dechrome, repair and rechromethe bumper. Paul at Rolscar Smash Repairs inSumner Park (3378 5554) did a magnificentjob of respraying the wing, taking off the wholesection so as not to damage the trim.I suppose most of all, my thanks to ShannonsInsurance, who although I had to deal withthree assessors over the three months it tookto return ALV154 to her former self , allowedme to choose the repairers I identified as beingthe best people and what’s more paid all thebills. Quite an experience!!Ronnie Brown

Presentation DinnerA great evening thanks to Ronnie, the Events Queen, and MikeHawthorne, who identified and secured the location, and thenorganised the music as well – thoughtfully including his beloved,Jo, to tinkle the keys.A real privilege to be able to present a number of our “50 YearMember” Badges at that dinner as well. As Greg Berkmanobserved, it’s nice to get something for doing nothing but wait, even if it did take 50 years. We have all seen pictures of Ronnie’s Grey Lady after its closeencounter with the road train earlier in the year.Due to some acute forensic work I was able to track down some more information about that little incident and release the results of my inquiries at that dinner. As you know, Ronnie drives an Alvis Grey LadyDHC. She pulled over to let other traffic past. She then thought she was pulling out behind a“B” double, only to discover the hard way thatit wasn’t – it was a road train with at least 3trailers. Here’s a shot of the road train onapproach. After the inevitable collision, here’s Ronnie’scar. Sure, it looks bad. And provides evidence tothose who assert no good deed goes for longunpunished. However, as the proverbial guy walking into a bar with a blackeye says, “It might look bad, but you should have seen theother guy”.Here’s the other guy. Teach him to pick on an Alvis. And here is the Alvis, restored to its former glory. You can’tkeep a Grey Lady down. See p21Speaking of Alvises, my friend Philip Singer, owner of, among other things, a rare TF21,went to an event at the Weald and DownlandOpen Air Museum, where he spied manywonderful steam powered devices showing offtraction engines, steam rollers etc.

AGM and new committeeFriday last saw our AGM and with it theretirement (for now) of 3 long servingcommittee members – Dave Fletcher, MikeHawthorne and Frank Corbett. Dave hasvariously been over the years President, Secretary, Treasurer and long serving committeemember. However, he has other important duties to fulfil, including grooming the Boy King, Lucas, to take over the reins of the club in 20 years or so.Frank has been secretary for the past 3 years, and has done a superb job. He built on the discipline shown by Katrina Monckton, and has introduced order where once there

was little. Not only that, he has applied himself to numerous additional tasks with dedication, persistence and thoroughness. One recent example was the identification of those who had been members for 50 years. It sounds like an easy task, but it wasn’t, as records from 50 years ago are not always up to scratch. And then we come to Mike Hawthorne, always jovial, imparter of fine jokes, and someonewho has taken on many specific tasks for the club. He has modified and added bases to trophies to carry the new winner’s plaques, manufactured props for the dinners (eg the VCCQ 60 year 1950s style microphone), found sponsorship for our 60th year, and many other things. Most recently he designed andcommissioned the 50 year member badges, andrecycled a trophy for our new “ConservationClass” award – vehicles that would never win aconcours, but have been kept as “drivers” alltheir lives.A big thanks to all for their contributions. Now we turn to our new committee members:Katrina making a welcome return, and DavidFryer, Jon Voller and Henry Hancock all comingon to inject new life. All own proper cars and welook forward to their contributions. David F hasalready done much, with his magnificent concours posters over many years, and providing age-related props for the various dinners. Until next month, KBO, DY

AND TRACTION ENGINES.Doug, Brian is most welcome to any of the photos.Yes it's the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum see http://www.wealddown.co.uk/ and the occasion was their "Vintage and Steam" event. There were classic cars on show on the Saturday and Jaguars on the Sunday; the traction engines were there both days, they also had a couple of roundabouts with power being provided by traction engines, see photos attached. If you're into steam power in a big way we have the Hollycombe Working Steam Museum just three or four miles away, see http://www.hollycombe.co.uk/. There are also several preserved railways, locomotives etc in our area.

It seems that some people are more interested in other things then cars, however he had to clean all his children's shoes. The real emmakarras.

Frank is taking retirement seriously. No matter, as our proof reader is also holidaying in some far off resort. Ah, thejoys of being an editor for another year. It will be interesting to see the order now that we have a new secretary – no pressure Henry. In fact it had been suggested previously that this was the order in which the mag should be produced. Boring stuff last. I will be interested to hear members' opinions.

The message here is that the Club’s Library has many books which can be of invaluable assistance to members who are restoring a car. Mike Hawthorne’s statement is reproduced below.

A STATEMENT FROM MIKE HAWTHORNEI and a considerable number of longer standing members of the Club are becoming increasingly concerned about the direction the Club seems to be heading regarding the eligibility of cars and full membership. When the Club was formed in 1955 to cater essentially for pre 1930 veteran and vintage cars (with some PVT Cars encouraged) the membership was by INVITATION ONLY. Whilstthis thankfully is not now the case, there appears to be a movement afoot to accept post World War Two tin sports cars as ELIGIBLE CARS, the very sort of car for which the Club was created to exclude. We are in no way obliged to cater for these cars – there are many one-make clubs that do so!So it would seem that we have gone from a reasonably elite group of enthusiasts to a Club where ANYONE with ANY CAR can join as a full member. This now appears to be theperception and this cannot be allowed to continue. The Club’s Constitution states that a car which is outside the parameters of a vintage car,but which in the opinion of the Committee, would be a valued asset to the Club, would beaccepted and the owner would thus become a full member. We have a retired solicitor asPresident and he will tell you that a truck could be driven through that piece of verbiage. We must continue the original tenets of the Club: either change the Constitution to exclude any post war car unless it is considered to be exceptional by the Committee, or form a permanent eligibility committee of say 3 long standing members to evaluate each application. A mass produced sports car that they made only 50 of, with overhead twin wing mirrors is not exceptional and never will be.The only way out of this dilemma is to revert to the old Club method of having Associate Membership for owners of interesting cars outside our remit. Accordingly I would like to move a motion that the Club holds an extraordinary general meeting, if necessary, to debate my proposal to reinstate Associate Membership and address the issue of Eligible Cars.

PEAK CROSSING – Sunday AUGUST 28I got a last minute invite to the E + F Type Register of the Jaguar Drivers Club of Queensland day out in the country. Over 200 proper cars turned out at the property of Neil Summerson. Many of our members were there including Bob and Leslie Pope, Jon and Lyndal Voller, Dean and Christine Prangley, Joe Wilson and Charlie. I jagged a lift in the XK140 of our Hon. Pres.

JON VOLLER ARRIVED LATER THE 59 VETTE WAS NOT OUT OF PLACE

The local Rotary Club provided a BBQ lunch and a coffee truck was on site. All one needed was a chair in the shade, and a cold beer. There was a very good duo playing the right sort of music. Thanks Neil for a great day out.

APPS.I am sure you all know about these. Try “Fuel Map Australia”. Every time you fill up you enter mileage, litres and cost per litre. You can use it for a number of cars. The map shows fuel prices at nearby stations and is updated every time someone adds data. It does all the sums for you listing your l/km, $/l, average economy etc. – Certainly worth alook. And for you caravanners there's WikiCampsAU

MORRIS MAJOR.No further debate on the Major coverage from the last two months.

The quality of the pics in the mag cannot be as high as we would like but inan effort to keep the file below 5meg something has to go. It looks fine until thepage is zoomed up. If you need full quality of any of the pics I can soon forwardthem on. Let me know.
