modern life is rubbish .... time for a change?
You won’t find another sweeping
statement about how we run our
business in the ‘greenest’ way possible
and we don’t claim to be saving the
world with a few generic environmental
policies, that would be ridiculous, but
as a company and as a group of
individuals we do realise that we can
make a difference.
Waste is something that we should all
oppose, there is no gain in any form
of being wasteful, waste costs money,
stretches resources and it screams of
inefficiency and incompetence.
“Our CSR policy is
more than just
a statement of
good intent”
Here at the Wagstaff Group we hope to
set a new level of social and
environmental awareness and in doing
so we have taken a holistic approach to
encompass more than just a reuse and
recycle policy.
Our Corporate Social Responsibility
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - Our Corporate Responsibility
Our CSR is more than just a
statement of good intent, we have
broken it down into real processes that
we have implemented and which will
continue to develop and grow in the
future, for the good.
Some time ago we sat down and
discussed how we could run our
business in a more efficient and
effective manor, back then big changes
were made to implement this and
at the same time reduce our carbon
emissions.
The changes
AOutsource our transportation to
specialist companies to take
advantage of the consolidation of
deliveries and maximisation of loads.
Also routing and scheduling vehicles
helps to minimise mileage whilst
continuing to meet customer demands
across the country.
AOutsourcing warehousing
operations to specialist locally
positioned companies to reduce
energy consumption by sharing and
managing furniture distribution all
under one roof.
“consolidation of
deliveries
& maximisation of loads”
At Wagstaff we realise, that due to the
nature of our business our carbon
emissions are relatively low. (see article on
How are we doing?)
As well as the fundamental changes
we have made to our business over the
years, we have also made a series of
small internal steps across our company
nationally, to help reduce our
environmental impact even further, we
realise that these small steps can make a
BIG difference if we all get involved.
“Sowing the seeds of change
into our team to work, act and be
conscious of how they carry out their
day to day activities will ensure that
in the future acting
environmentally will become
second nature ”.
Managing our environmental impact

ARide to work schemes
Although we have achieved a reduction
in energy and fuel consumption since
we achieved our ISO14001 status in
January 2005, we want to do more
in our fight against climate change.
Our initial calculations show that as an
organisation we have a total carbon
footprint of approximately 533 tonnes
of fossil CO2 during the course
of one year.
This measurement reflects our
consumption for the year ended
December 2009 and is to be used
“we have a total
carbon footprint of
approximately
533 tonnes of fossil CO2”
as a guideline, which will enable us to
measure our future performance
year on year.
The calculation has been arrived at,
in the main, by looking at our fleet of
vehicles, kilometres travelled and
applying the rate of g/km as provided
by the Environment Agency, with
further estimates for energy
consumption (electricity). The
calculation is at the initial stages and we
are working closely with the advice and
verification of FIRA, so that we have a
degree of certainty that our bench mark
figure can be used, in the future, to
measure our performance.
How are we doing? Carbon Footprint
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - How are we doing? Carbon Footprint
Clean Energy Portfolio – Our funding
would support VCS
verified carbon reduction projects
around the world which
reduces carbon emissions through the
displacement of fossil fuels through
clean/renewable energy generation
From £4,399.00 to offset 533 tonnes
“UK Tree Planting –
Planting of trees in the UK region
of our choice, supporting wild
life habits whilst offsetting our
carbon emissions. From £6,142.00
to pledge 534 trees”
Reforestation in Kenya – pledge funds for the planting of native broad leaved trees in the Great Rift Valley. The project is co-ordinated by ESCONET and is also supported by the Red Cross’.
Offset Options
We are currently investigating carbon
offsetting options which would
enable us to offset our unavoidable
emissions by helping fund projects
that deliver an equivalent CO2 saving
elsewhere.
Before we turn to offsetting we are
going through the process of
“We are currently in
the process of
becoming a
carbon Neutral
company ”
reducing our CO2 emissions as
described in these sections
It is now widely acknowledged that
greenhouse gas emissions must be
reduced dramatically to avoid climate
chaos. Business, whether delivering
products or services, has a central role
to play in this.
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - Offset Options
The influential Stern Report published
in 2006 called for a 60-80% reduction
of CO2 emissions by 2050 and the UK
Government is now committed, in the
Climate Change Bill, to reducing carbon
dioxide emissions by 60% from 1990
levels, by 2050.

We have teamed up with FIRA (the
furniture industries association) to help
all our manufacturing suppliers achieve
our standards of environmental and
social practise by promoting the use of
FIRA’s Furniture Footprinter™.
The Footprinter™ is a revolutionary
computer software tool developed to
help companies within the furniture
supply chain to reduce their carbon
footprints. We realise that all our
furniture manufacturing suppliers are
“ suppliers are at
different levels in
terms of measuring
the carbon footprint
of their individual
products”
at different levels in terms of assessing
the carbon footprint of their individual
products and our goal is to help the
ones who are a few steps behind get up
to speed. Far more sophisticated than a
simple carbon calculator, the next
generation carbon, ecological and
accounting tool is geared towards the
issues facing the furniture sector and
calculates the footprints of specific
products, projects, processes and
whole organisations.
Helping Suppliers live our values
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - FIRA Carbon Footprinter
Compares the impacts of different product or
project options
Stores data and is continuously updated to reflect
the latest footprint figures.
Demonstrates continuous improvement
Identifies areas where significant
improvements can be made
Helps to raise employee awareness
Calculates the carbon and ecological impacts of different
products or project options
Creates easy to understand reports and charts
The Furniture Footprinter™ is a natural
addition to FIRA’s strong environmental
and business support portfolio, which
includes the Furniture Industry
Sustainability Programme (FISP), Club
Green, lean processes, supply chain
management, sustainable timber
purchasing and environmental
management (ISO 14001).
“Our goal is to help
the ones that are a
few steps behind ”
The Furniture Footprinter™ has been
created using a model devised by Best
Foot Forward, which has received the
Queen’s Award for Enterprise in
Sustainable Development and has
worked on footprinting projects with
organisations such as GlaxoSmithKline,
the NHS, Virgin Trains to name
just a few.
What does this mean?
With an industry standard in place we
have a benchmark to work from so that
our clients can make informed choices
with the confidence that the environ-
mental aspects of those products have
been thoroughly examined.

Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - Re-use & Recycle
Re-use and recycle is one of our 7 core services
and actively promoted to all our customers.
We have developed a
series of initiatives to help customers to
responsibly manage unwanted furniture in a
sustainable and cost effective way.
Re-use & Recycle waste management
Carbon Footprint Although furniture may have
reached the end of its life in its current environment, it doesn’t have to be the end of the road. By re-using one desk and task
chair you can save 65 tonnes of CO2, when you consider that an estimated figure of 250,000 units of furniture comes to the end of its life each year, by re
using just 10% could save 16.5 million tonnes of CO2 released into the atmosphere, plus the new owner
gets furniture they need at little or no cost.

Recycling to us means segregating
products into their core elements,
wood, metal, plastic etc, this is
done at our distribution hubs before
being collected by local recycling
companies.
• Steel is smelted and added back
into new steel production at 30%
• Card is 100% recycled up to five
times to be made back into paper
products
• Wood - chipped and sent to be
used as animal bedding

1. New Ways of Working
A Loss of the concept of one person – one desk as workstations are shared.
A Workspace will lose heavy IT and telephony equipment and become a simplified space supporting mobile, portable technology.
A Cost savings from pared down workspace, capex (through less space) and opex (through less churn).
A Fewer allocated desks and increased collaborative and shared space.
WagstaffWhitepapersWe are fascinated by our industry so
much so that we have commissioned
leading expert Phillip Ross,
CEO of Unwired Ltd to produce a
series of reports relating to the
working environment and the future
of the workplace.
Each paper provides a unique insight
into the way we work and the factors
which effect us now and in the not too
distant future, in fact some of these
ideas have been put into practice by
many forward thinking organisations.
Many of theses topics will help reduce
the amount of C02 consumed by
business due to improved efficiency
and new ways of working which better
suit both the employer and employee.
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - Wagstaff Whitepapers 01-23
Wagstaff Whitepapers 01-23
2. Emerging Technology and the
Office of the Future
A Fixed phones will vanish with a move to software or ‘softphones’ connecting people to people regardless of location.
APeople more mobile around and out of the office so circulation and shared space will increase.
ARemote users can create Virtual Private Network through laptops to their company’s server allowing use of softphones.
AWi-Fi enabled mobiles will roam onto the local corporate network.
4. Sustainability in the Workplace
A Carbon footprint of workplace includes fit-out, materials, equipment and workers’ behaviour. Consider long-term energy efficiency and cost-savings of equipment against initial cost.
AEnergy saving workforce encouraged by visual energy dashboards to change behaviour.
ASpace management systems optimise energy use by reducing heating and lighting of empty space.
AIntelligent management information systems allow increased control over environment (heating, lighting as well as
accountability for energy use.
8. Acoustics in the Workplace
Part 1
A Noise can cause a loss of privacy, confidentiality and productivity (up to 20%) in open plan work environments.
A New acoustic challenges in an ageing workforce and with new technology replacing traditional telephones.
A European legislation sets the ‘daily personal exposure’ threshold at 80db. Without a ubiquitous headset and quiet zones, unified communications increase the risk of noise pollution.
Wagstaff Whitepapers 01-23
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - Wagstaff Whitepapers 01-23
5. Expectations of the
Next Generation
A Millennials are the technology adept young people coming of age at the start of the millennium who will be boardroom faces in 2025.
A They are heavy internet users and content creators, comfortable with informal instant communication and used to being on an equal footing with other knowledge sharers.
AWill work in the knowledge economy; a digital world where work sharing, collaborating and showing their own initiative are second nature.
3. The Homeworker
A Remote access to corporate networks and mobile telephony widely used to give flexible working and ‘mobile’ office.
ABenefits of reduced carbon footprint, attraction and retention of staff, reduced office overheads.
AHealth and safety, insurance, security remain employers responsibility.
ARisk assessment and provision of office and IT equipment may be necessary.
7. Carbon Offsetting and
Green Claims
A Companies are now taking climate change seriously from a financial and legal perspective rather than from a moral or ethical one.
AThe UK has targets to cut emissions by 34% and increase its renewable energy. Buildings account for 40% of all emissions so must play a part in this.
ASmart buildings with Building Management Systems and sensors can optimise heating and lighting use thereby cutting energy bills and emissions.
AEnergy management companies plus government loans and capital allowances can help companies improve their energy efficiency.
6. Trends and Case Studies
A Old system of one person – one desk with hierarchy still commonplace.
A Sustainability putting pressure on companies to justify their work structure
A Collaboration, distribution and flexible working, supported by new technology, promotes workplace mobility. New concepts of work space with corporate office as an academy.
13. The Death of Paper at Work
A A paperless office that is both environmentally aware and space conscious will become more prevalent as people begin to trust electronic archiving.
A Storing documents on a network makes them accessible from anywhere, allowing mobile and remote workers to share and collaborate in real time.
A Shared local and desktop printers will be replaced by MFDs servicing much larger groups with ‘follow me’ printing allowing workers to pull documents from anywhere.
A e-Books, containing hundreds of Pdfs, will allow users to carry around research and reports.
14. The Disability Discrimination Act
(DDA) and Ergonomics in the
workplace
A Employers must make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to the workplace so as not to discriminate against people with disabilities. Each situation is unique and there are usually a number of different solutions to the same issue. Expensive solutions are not always necessary.
A Disabled people should be consulted in planning and simplesolutions can benefit the whole workforce.
A Good ergonomics is no longer a luxury – flexible working and shared space will necessitate adjustable furniture solutions.
11. The Thin Building
A ‘Obese buildings’ are laden with technology that requires extensive infrastructure and large spaces devoted to servers.
A Virtualisation provides efficient, shared server resources such as Amazon’s AWS with flexibility to expand or reduce the virtual server to meet demand.
A The ‘Cloud’ will see people consuming software on demand and companies being freed of software support and maintenance as well as housing bulky servers.
A If you don’t need to be in the office for technology and software, this will challenge the reasons to be there all the time.
12. The Connected Desk
A With increased use of portable technology and wireless systems, the interface with fixed technology seems clumsy and ineffective.
A Laptops and mobile devices need cumbersome power packs and peripherals. Even docking stations become obsolete with each new development.
A Standardised hardware and wireless power will free up the portable workforce.
A The ‘Connected Desk’ will improve productivity and office efficiency by offering up to three monitors but also assessing use of space.
Wagstaff Whitepapers 01-23
Wagstaff Environmental and CSR Policy - Wagstaff Whitepapers 01-23
10. The Digital City and Third Space
A Digital cities use broadband infrastructure enabling users with mobile devices to connect anywhere within the ‘connected community’.
A People will begin to demand new places to work, above and beyond hotels and coffee shops, as wireless technology advances and Wi-Fi embedded in millions of devices.
A Offices will be under pressure to provide workspace and free Wi-Fi for suppliers, contractors and clients with mobile devices.
A The growth of 3rd spaces will increase to supply innovative work environments away from the workplace for a mobile workforce..
9. Acoustics in the Workplace
Part 2
A Traditional passive noise control includes physical barriers and sound absorption.
A Active noise control includes phase cancellation or ‘anti-noise’and new systems of sound masking.
A Early planning and modelling of acoustics in workplace design will be crucial.
A Adaptive systems can react to occupancy and sensed noise providing ‘ramp’ and ‘level scheduling’ noise masking.

We understand the importance of
having a strong CSR and hope you will
agree that we have taken solid steps to
improve the way in which we work and

influence all our suppliers to work to the
same values we will be making a huge
difference in our industry.
Where do we go from here? Before we
implement any new processes to help
reduce carbon emissions we must make
sure that we are fulfilling our current CSR
brief. By 2013 we plan to implement
some if not all of the
improvements stated below.
As awareness and legislation changes to
