INSTRUCTIONS

This booklet is divided into the following two sections:

Section I

These scholarships require the Portsmouth High School Local Scholarship Application which is available on the PHS website or in the Naviance Family Connection. Complete one application leaving the “name of the scholarship line” blank. Make copies for each scholarship for which you are applying and then fill in the name of the scholarship. (Ask teachers ASAP if you need a recommendation.)

Submit completed packets with all necessary attachments, including a copy of the financial aid award letter from college you will be attending, to the Guidance Department secretary on or before the deadline. (One staple only or paperclip.) (Do not put in envelopes or folders.) The guidance secretary will attach a transcript to all applications and forward them to the proper committees.

Some of these scholarships require you to write a letter to the scholarship committee. Some may require additional information and or attachments. Staple these to your letter. Put your name and the name of the scholarship on each page. You are responsible for submitting or mailing the letters/attachments to the contacts provided. (Do not enclose in envelopes, if returning to Guidance.)

Section II

These scholarships require their own applications. (You may obtain an application either on the PHS website or in Naviance Family Connection.) You are responsible for submitting/mailing the completed applications with all the necessary attachments. If a transcript is required, requests should be submitted at least five (5) school days prior to the due date.

Pay close attention to all deadlines as failure to meet the deadlines could result in being ineligible for the scholarship.

Write a letter to the selection committee explaining why you feel you are deserving of this award. Be sure to include extracurricular, out-of-school, or employment activities that have been significant to you during your school years. In addition, mention any facts specific to your financial need. The committee will base its decision on the information provided by the student in the letter.NOTE: Payment will be authorized after successful completion of Freshman year. SALVATORE AND JOANNE GRASSO Scholarship FundThis scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior who has been accepted to an institute of higher learning with the intention of entering the field of Education. The student must be in the top 35% of the graduating class and must submit an essay of no less than 300 words on the topic “Why I am Selecting Education as A Career”. Also, include references from three teachers (or a guidance counselor and two teachers) attesting to the ability of the student to succeed in the field of education. GREENLAND PARENT ORGANIZATION ScholarshipAwarded to a graduate of Greenland Central School and who had attended grades 6-8. He/she must be a graduating senior accepted to a 2 or 4 year accredited school of higher learning. Specifics that will be looked at are: academic achievements supported by official school transcript(s), service to the community, extracurricular activities, including any jobs held. Financial information will not be a factor in consideration.NOTE: $4000 award (or $2000 awarded to two students) will be paid out in four installments: $1000 upon graduation ($500 if two students selected); the following three payments will be made after submitting a renewal form and official college transcript giving evidence to a minimum 3.0 grade point average for the preceding academic year.DEADLINE: April 2, 2012ATTACHMENT: Written personal essay explaining why you deserve this scholarship, highlighting achievements and goals.

HENRY B. MARGESON ScholarshipThis scholarship was established to honor the memory of Henry B. Margeson, a distinguished graduate of Portsmouth High School (1919) and later of West Point, who led an infantry regiment across Europe during World War II, and was renowned among his many friends and extended family for his erudition, courtesy, kindness, and grace.
