07 / Fieldwork

Trás-os-Montes is one of the most empoverished and forsaken regions in Portugal.

Our anthropological fieldwork consisted mainly in the investi-gation of the recent phenomenon regarding the unforeseen resur-gent of the idiosyncratic winter festivities in this region, marked by a harmonic amalgam of religious and pagan rituals.

We were able to verify the importance of the migrants, espe-cially of the youngsters, in the preparation and maintenance of these festivities. The migration is almost inevitable for those who wish to seek better lifestyles or better education, but the fact is that these are the people that more actively fight for the maintenance of the festivities.

Communal banquets, fires, and rituals (marrieds vs bachelors) mark these gatherings.

The unfortunate and tragic death of one of the youngsters, brought to a premature end the winter celebrations in 2007, and the entire village gathered in the cemetery to mourn that loss.
