ABOUTHi, my name is Ana Batalha and I’m am Architect with a Urban Planning Major. I’ve graduated recently from the Faculty of Architecture of the Tecnhical University of Lisbon, and this portfolio showcases some of the works I’ve developed during my academic years.

During my degree I was always encouraged to work across different scales, from territorial scales to housing and details, which made me realize the importance of each one, in the pursuit of a consistent architectural project.

Altough, the thing that fascinates me the most about architecture and urbanism is, beyond the creative work, the understanding of the phisical and sociological space, that I consider essential as a basis to any thoughtful intervention.

I’m always eager to learn and to challenge myself to do better and think creatively, in the pursuit of new development paradigms.

"...and thus, my friends, what the architectural profession lacks is an understanding of its own social importance. This lack is due to a double cause: to the anti-social nature of our entire society and to your own inherent modesty. You have been conditioned to think of yourselves merely as breadwinners with no higher purpose than to earn your fees and the means of your own existence. Isn’t it time, my friends, to pause and to redene your position in society? Of all the crafts, yours is the most important. Important, not in the amount of money you might make, not in the degree of artistic skill you might exhibit, but in the service you render to your fellow men. You are those who provide mankind’s shelter. Remember this and then look at our cities, at our slums, to realize the gigantic task awaiting you. But to meet this challenge you must be armed with a broader vision of yourselves and of your work. You are not hired lackeys of the rich. You are crusaders in the cause of the underprivileged and the unsheltered. Not by what we are shall we be judged, but by those we serve. Let us stand united in this spirit. Let us--in all matters--be faithful to this new, broader, higher perspective. Let us organize--well, my friends, shall I say--a nobler dream?"

URBANISM

2010

The Street in Cova da Moura’s neighbourhood (in Lisbon) is the foremost place for socio-cultural encounters and exchanges, very often functioning as an extension of residential space.

Therefore The Street becomes the theme of this urban rehabilitation, wich proposes the development of two networks, one comprising creative spaces and other productive gardens, pointing out practices already existent in the neighbourhood.

Urban Art embodies absolute freedom and the right to express social criticism or share a work of art with the greatest possible number of people.

Nowadays, in spite of the controversy surrounding it, urban art has achieved a degree of respect, as shown by the fact that one of the most respected modern art museum in the world (TATE Modern) is exhibiting works of street art on its walls. The art of the streets is now travelling to the museums.

URBANISM

2010

This initiative proposes to unify the neighbourhood around a common objective: that of exploring and unveil urban art so as to find innovative applications that may make it profitable, while also constructing a unique publiv space, improving the image of the neighbourhood.

The main goal of this project is to recover the lost life of this part of Lisbon, where empty spaces were left by abandoned factories.

The Metropolitan Forum consists in two volumes that unite at a central square, where the street enlarges. This two buildings make the connection between a more urban side of the plan, where the historical center is, while the other makes the entrace to the nature, a new urban park to the city.

ARCHITECTURE

This area benifits from its high elevation, thus providing a beautiful view over the village of Torrão and a waterbarrier. In this project I’ve workked with the volumes trying to privelige that point of view, that faces South, by creating a large window that frames the landscape, while the North facade keeps more closed, since it faces the public street.

PUBLIC SPACE

2008

Due to a existent road crossing this was a small and disconnected public space so, the main idea behind this project was to unify all the public space through the pavement, giving the pedestrians a more confortable place to walk and enjoy the Convent, always ensuring their safety.

Delaunay’s “Point of View”

For this installation we used painted glass plates that allow a different view of Rua Garrett, a quintessential tourist destination of Lisbon.

This installation aims to advertise the exhibition of paintings by Delaunay to be held within the same metro station. The people that pass by are invited to experience a new perspective of Lisbon, by looking through those colorful and bubbly glass plates, that allow us to see the landscape as circles of colors, close to what Delaunay does in his paintings of Paris.

LANSDCAPE

2008

This eco trail was conceived as a form of tourism development, ecotourism and rural tourism, since it creates a dynamic between the dam and the village of Torrão.This route is still thought to be attractive to other activities, including: water sports (canoeing, etc.), hiking and cultural activities. This range of activities is complemented by the supply of accommodation, including an inn near the dam.
