The structure is meant to be used by the bird-watchers for their temporary stay. It is raised from the marsh ground which needs to be preserved.Inside the modular system of columns platforms can be mounted. Small modules for rest and canvases for shade can also be interpolated.

The house has a clear division on the daily part on the ground floor and sleeping on the first floor. The living space connects to the outside pool. The intention was to achieve the best orientation of the spaces. The living and sleeping part differ in the materialization of the facade.

Urban Planning Design of the Settlement Branovečina

Concept

It is very hard, if not impossible in a settlement of apartment buildings to give the same conditions to everybody, especially the most attractive view. This is why the emphasis here is given to the public space which was designed to make the best use of the view towards the hills on the north-west.

The culture of using the public space is in Croatia at its beginning. Urban planners have the greatest responsibility to make public spaces which will be widely used by the residents.

Organization

The basis of the settlement are two strips of public space oriented towards the mentioned hills of Sljeme. Of those two, the south strip connects to the greenery next to the stream.

The traffic was organized with the surrounding existing roads (blue) and two new roads (red). The chosen typology of buildings made the minimization of the vehicle traffic in the settlement possible.

A characteristic angular block made from three linear buildings connected by the garage was formed. This typology made possible the formation of the oriented public spaces. Urban blocks are characteristic of Zagreb and this is a contemporary interpretation suitable to the contemporary living standard.

Concept

The starting point for the concept of the landscape was the orientation of the public spaces of the settlement towards the Sljeme hill on the north-west. The idea was to emphasize the perspective so that the public space would be pleasant and have an inviting atmosphere. .

Traffic

New lines of movement are formed which connect the settlement with the facilities in the surroundings: the market, church, monastery, cemetery and the settlement that will most certainly form in the future on the east. These are the facilities outside the boundary of the intervention. In order to conclude the movement inside the area of the intervention on the ends of the newly formed path there are two pavilions with coffee bar and a small shop.

Design

Emphasizing one orientation and line of movement tended to quite monotonous design. To avoid this the element of curved wall was used. The space gets dynamized, it converges, diverges, closes and opens alternately to the trees or to the stream on the north. The continuity of the path was achieved by the lines in the design of the floor and the concrete frames which form the urban equipment – benches, lighting and baskets.

The walls are made of concrete and their use can be divers. They also divide the main line of movement from more intimate spaces beneath the trees or near the stream.

The bank of the stream is on four places structured with lines for sitting made of stone.

With small amount of elements the multi layer space was created. It has a specific identity and makes divers spacial experiences possible – close, far, in front, behind, above, beneath...

Ivanja Reka

The school building is situated on the plot so that it embraces the existing trees. They grow on the slope that divides the terrain on two plateaus which differ in height for 2 m. From their first entrance to the school building students will feel the atmosphere because the greenery is already there.

Along the mentioned slope there is a path which connects the local square on the north with the recreation center on the south. The path runs beneath the school building and connects to the entrance for the external users of the school facilities.

The sloping roofs define the morphology of the building but they also define three functional parts – library, multi functional space and the administration.

The school is entered from the bridge on the level of the road. The south wing contains the lower classes with their open spaces beneath the wing. Upper classes have their classrooms in the south wing.

The central multi functional space connects the two wings with classrooms. It is differentiated from corridors by different level which makes diverse scenarios of its use possible.

The bearing structure is from reinforced concrete with the light metal construction of the roof. The steel profiles (classrooms) and trusses carry the composite metal panels which are the covering. The facade above the level of the flooding is also clad with those panels. Beneath the level there is concrete.

The multi functional space and the library with computer classroom illustrate the best the spacial concept of the school – visual connections between the spaces. This is the spatial expression of the concept of integrated learning.

Morphology

The plot is special because it sometimes floods till the level of the road. The context is rural with traditional sloped roof single family houses. These were the basic reasons for the building to be raised from the ground and be dominated by the sloping roofs.

Design of the urban block

The interior space of the block was recognized as being adequate (by its size and facilities) to take on one more public space that wouldn't intrude its interior peace. The block keeps its basic characteristic, it stays the new world which can give you a break from the dynamic life of the street. It is a big room which holds exhibition spaces. They form enclosed passage through the block. The passage runs along the central park with sculptures.

Concept

The art gallery which is situated in the interior of the block runs through the auction house to the street facade where it opens into a three-level space. There it is possible to display 3d art installations. It is kind of a window which invites the passers by to enter the art gallery and the block.

Another functional set are the auction spaces including auction halls and the depot.

The upper floors contain the working spaces. The art gallery divides the floors in two differently defined parts. The spatial relation between the art gallery and the working spaces differs on different floors. On the last floor above the gallery volume there is a shielded terrace for the employees. It opens to the north and the view towards the Medvednica hill.

Materials

The material used for the facade is the ceramics. The base of the building is clad with ceramic tiles in light gray color and with lightly grained texture. This material was chosen because it was recognized as being pleasing and tactile. Other exterior walls are done in plaster of the same color. Certain surfaces are being emphasized. The facade of the work areas is structural glass facade with low iron glazing so that the quality of the light in the interior would be the best concerning the function of the building.

Great expose of the work areas to the street was dealt with vertical ribs on the north facade. They do not lower the amount of the light in the interior considerably, but looking from an angle they create opaque surface. The ribs are formed from the steel core on which thin ceramics is applied.On the south facade the sun protection is solved with the horizontal ceramic ribs.

Sports center, Rijeka

Concept

On the location there was found a cutting in the cliff made as a result of the digging of stone for the Rijeka sea port. This project doesn't deny that scar, but makes it into a new potential. The public space turns towards the cliff and uses it as s characteristic scenery.

A special characteristic of the town of Rijeka is the steep terrain cut perpendicularly with staircases and paths. The sports center connects to these existing paths on two levels. They function independently from the sports center (the pool).

Program

The basic functional assembly are the spots facilities in the mono-volume which hovers over the entrance square.: the pools, gym hall and the fitness room, sauna. The projects includes two more plots, on one there are tennis playgrounds and on the other near the sea is a summer hostel.

Materials

On the street facade reflective glass is used what gives the impression of the volume which is cut from the cliff.

Morphology

The volume which contains the sports facilities become a part of the attractive topography that is characteristic for the area. The element which signals the building is a small tower in which there are secondary facilities (coffee bars). The hostel near the sea complements the industrial landscape of the town of Rijeka with its port.

The initial point of the transformation of this area was found in the wider context. Those are former industrial complexes which have some time ago made the identity of the part of Zagreb south from the railway. Those complexes are today very attractive because of their atmosphere, but they need to be revitalized in order to become active with the other tissue of the town which will inevitably form as a function of private interest and profit.

How can we reconcile these clashed interests?

AX / The production of new values in the areas needing transformation

BX / The existing industrial heritage revitalized by the consumption of new values

The solution was found in the concept of production of new values and their consumption. The 'New Values' are those which make the social evolution possible, in such areas as culture, sports or media. They are formed in the newly build structures ans are presented in the complexes of industrial heritage. The way they are received from the people which consume them changes the way they are produced.

The structure was formed from one element which is important on its own and its repetition forms the woods. This is the poplar tree which with its (meta)physical appearance refers to the verticals of the former industrial chimneys. This urban woods is formed in all areas where the process of production and consumption of the new values takes place. It is planted inside the net which is the basis for the organization of traffic and built structure.

This concept is applicable to the wider area of the town of Zagreb where there is many former industrial complexes south of the railway. If this principle continues a new linear urban forest of Zagreb can be formed. It also fits in the wider concept of public spaces in Zagreb – duality of natural and artificial (man made).

Contemporary Living in Urban Block Ž-P-H-G, Zagreb

Situation

This newly planned living space is located inside of a characteristic Zagreb urban block. The block shows the tendency of a dense structure forming inside. This is recognized as potentially interesting and is investigated further in this project. The result are diverse micro-spaces which form the setting for living spaces.

Concept

The added value of these living spaces is work. The goal was to create a complex for rent for the people which have a need for the working space together with their living space for some period of time. This topic was motivated by the contemporary way of living where there no longer exists a clear division between the time we spend working and the time we spend resting. This is the reason places of work and rest (and play) are all close together.

However, the goal was to create living spaces of optimal intimacy and emphasize the social component in the places of work. This is why the working spaces are grouped around the central communication which runs through the block.

Apartments

31 living unit

The apartments in the street building have one floor with two apartments on the staircase typology. The building inside of the block has more divers typology. There are 9 single-room and 2 apartments with two rooms, 9 with three rooms and one four-room apartment. The entrance to them is diverse.

Materials

The walls are clad with concrete panels and the interior walls of the public space are clad in wood which is also found on the terraces. The contrast between the cold concrete and the warm wood was used to emphasize the interior feeling of the public passage, although that is actually open exterior space. The panels from the stretched metal were used for the protection from the sun.
