-The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you

to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth."

-Dan Rather-Everybody in Education field has their own idea of what teaching really is. At this point in my life,

my teachers, professors and the relationships with people in my life has influenced of what a teacher should

be. That idea is just a starting point, not only will I progress as a student, but also as an educator. I want

to give my student a better understanding of themselves and endless possibilities that life can offer, while

learning something about myself in process, that is my goal why I want to be an educator. I want to educatepeople, and respect themselves as well, and also for them to do the same thing with others. Teaching is not

something that should go according to schedule, it is a live performance and anything could happen.

Students should be able to ask questions that are important and get honest, creative answers. I believe that

being a teacher is the hardest, and they say, the noblest career of all the careers. To inspire and benefit the

future of mankind is a gift that every educator should embrace.

Every child has a dream of what they want to be when they grow up, honestly,

mine was to be a pilot like my uncle Cesar. First it is a high paid job, and I can travel

around the world for free! Until I met Mrs. Alvarez, my kindergarten teacher, she and

her family is offering a free education in our community that time. Then I asked her why

    Teaching Credo

    5/28

are you doing this for free? Then she answered me because I want to help

kids to learn and be fruitful. I witnessed how the neighborhood loved andrespected her, giving them vegetables that our neighbors have harvested in their

backyard. Then I told my self, I want to be a teacher, I want also to get free foods

from my neighbors! That time I misunderstood everything. Until I went to college.

There I met Ms. Santos, my English teacher. She is always reminding us to study hard and be

successful. She is not just our teacher but also an adviser, a psychologist, because she knows what are we

thinking, and she predict our next actions. Ms. Santos became our friend; she touches our lives in every little

way. She is so sad when she heard the news that Im gong to stop college and will work to save money for

my education. Ms. Santos even offer money for me to continue, I really adored her and loved her since that

they. That makes me more passionate to be a teacher then I told my self I want to be like her.

My second comeback in the University, I was so sad when I heard the news that Ms. Santos was no

longer teaching in the university and migrated in the US for good. But then I met not just one Ms. Santos

character but three. Dr. Portez, Dr. Viola and of course Dr. Barbacena, my so called Angels their passion

for teaching was evident and they committed their self to help their students as much as possible, especiallyme. They taught me to be strong and competitive; they also encouraged me to take what I had learned and

apply it to situations outside the classroom. Because they are committed to their profession, I can say that I

have become a successful student and a better person as well. My teachers have given me a starting point in

my future career. However, it is up to me to grow more and become the best educator I can possibly be to

every single one of my students. I hope someday, to instill knowledge into my students minds, but also apassion for education in their hearts.

Personal Educational PhilosophyI believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating

atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is

my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing

an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three

elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting

as a guide, (2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting

respect for all things and all people.

When the teachers role is to guide, providing access to information rather than acting as the

primary source of information, the students' search for knowledge is met as they learn to findanswers to their questions. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to

discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing students access to

hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the

    7/28

lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of

    knowledge to occur.

Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are

meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. Developing a curriculum around student

interests fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. One way to take

learning in a direction relevant to student interest is to invite student dialogue about the lessons

and units of study. Given the opportunity for input, students generate ideas and set goals that

make for much richer activities than I could have created or imagined myself. When students

have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills

    necessary to reach their goals.

Helping students to develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their

environment occurs through an open sharing of ideas and a judicious approach to discipline.

When the voice of each student is heard, and environment evolves where students feel free to

express themselves. Class meetings are one way to encourage such dialogue. I believe children have

  • 8/7/2019 portfolio 402 new

    8/28

greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the lessons presented when they feel safe and

sure of what is expected of them. In setting fair and consistent rules initially and stating the

importance of every activity, students are shown respect for their presence and time. In return

they learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment.

For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continues learning and growth. One of myhopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for

learning with them. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals

who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society it is important for

students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of and

sensitive to their individual needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best

    educator that I can be.

    Principles and Methods of Teaching

Teacher is the key factor to the teaching-learning process. Attempts to describe what thetrue meaning of a good teacher is have been in constant argument. But there are traits raised to

determine a good teacher. The first one is the Professional qualities of a good teacher which

includes proficiency in the field of teaching, mastery of the student, mastery in the teachingprinciples, techniques and skills used in teaching, understanding the different branches of

knowledge, and love of the teaching profession. The second one is the Personal traits; on the otherhands include the teachers personality, interests, attitudes, beliefs, and relationship with pupils

and the community. The tough job of teaching requires perseverance and an open mind and heart. A future

teacher, therefore, must undergo pre-service education to train them in the intricacies of the fieldas well as for the proper behavior demanded by the profession.

A good teacher puts into mind the main elements involving learning. In doing so, a teacher must

    learn to;(1) unfreeze the students,

    10/28

    (2) diagnose the students problem,(3) set the goal of the lesson,

    (4) Introduce new behavior and

    (5) Refreeze the learning. In order to execute these steps, a teacher must know the procedures in instructing. The methods

include:(1) making use of the learning principles,

    (2) utilizing self activity,(3) considering learners differences

    (4) stimulating thinking, and(5) providing room for development.

A lesson plan is one of the most essential tools for teaching. It is the blueprint of the entire

lesson for the whole semester or year. The most common contents of a lesson plan are theobjectives of the topic, the subject matter to be discussed, materials to be used, the procedure ofdiscussion, the method of evaluation, and the assignment.

Good classroom management is essential for an effective teaching. As a second parent, ateacher must provide a conducive, home-like atmosphere to students. Good ventilation, lighting

and cleanliness help to attract and motivate a student to learn. A teacher must instill disciplineand responsibility towards the child.

Evaluation is also a one valuable tool for instruction. Evaluation assesses a studentsachievements for the day and helps the teacher plan out effective strategies to be used to enhance

    learning.

Nevertheless, a successful teaching does not at all depend on the hands of the teacher.

  • 8/7/2019 portfolio 402 new

    11/28

Rest also lies on the learners and support of the school. But whatever result may be, it is thelearner that is affected the most since they are the once that is in the bottom line in the learning

    process.

    History Of Caloocan HighSchool

In 1940, a 2.7 hectare school site was carved out of the vast rice fields of the

Grace park district ofKalookan, Rizal. It was bounded by 10thAve. on the

noth,9thAve. on the south Del Mundo St. on the east and P. Sevilla St on the

    west.

The construction of the Gabaldon type building with 6 standard classrooms and 2

smaller rooms as offices was finally completed on Dec. 6, 1994 and was thenreadied for occupancy following Monday, Dec. 8. Unfortunately, the Japanese

bombing of the Pearl Harbor rendered its immaterialization.

During the Japanese occupation, classes inKalookan High School and in all

schools in the Philippines were suspended and the students stayed home.

Kalookan High School then served as barracks and quarters for the Japaneseofficers and soldiers. The school was then razed down by fire by the Japanese

even before the end of their occupation, so that when classes for high school

resumed, June 1945, it had to avail itself of the use of Cecilio Apostol

Elementary facilities once again. To accommodate both the elementary and high

school students, a scheme was devised whereby the elementary pupils held

sessions in morning while the high school students attended the afternoon classes.Kalookan was still then a part of the big city of Manila that some teachers from

Torres High School were assigned toKHS.

On august 1947, evidently with the increasing number of High School students,

the accommodation of the Cecilio Apostol Elementary was impossible. Kalookan

Hi h School had to have a buildin o its own.

The association of parents and teachers had a fund raising campaign inNovember 1950, and solicited money that made build a vocational building

amounting P 25,000.H.E building was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Ang,. 1960,

stage was painted and its size was expanded, providing additional 200 chairs for

the library and teachers. Athletic grounds was constructed with the help of the

provincial administration, concrete walk, a drainage system and an eight-room-

two-storey school building with teachers room.
