Story & Photos by Jim Entz

The work of these five artists is in a broad range of media: photography, ceramics, sculptural paintings, drawing, sculpture, painting, video, mixed media, installation and digital art - and each artist approaches their medium quite differently.

This eclectic mix of artists in the exhibition were educated at a variety of colleges, from Art Center College of Design, to Otis Art Institute, to UC Santa Barbara, and to Fresno State, and have a broad range of

life and employment experiences, from military veteran, professional pilot, animator, film-maker, photographer, free-lance illustrator, magazine art director, to graphic designer.

Yet all are passionate about their artwork and all are passionate about their role as teachers and mentors of students of art, the budding artists, designers, photographers, animators, and illustrators of the future.

Mark Eaton discusses how his ceramic forms “deal with texture and the element of chance”.

Jim Entz describes how his work “draws a line to nature through process-topographical landscapes of paint formed through an accretionary process of layering color.”

Glen Hill says about his work, “As a painter, oils are my medium, and I wield them in the service of story-telling”.

Tom Howelldoesn’t say much about his work but his friend Jim Heitzberg says about Tom, “He has developed a considerable talent into mastery across several disciplines.”

Diran Lyons“I create photomontages in much the same way that I approach the production of political remix videos.”

Hall of Fame Night - February 25, 2017

Written by Deekay Fox

On behalf of the Porterville College Foundation they are pleased to announce the 2017 Hall of Fame inductees: Rob Haynes is the 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and Virginia Gurrola is the 2017 Distinguished Hall of Fame Inductee.

Rob Haynes is the 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. Rob attended Porterville College as a student and became an employee of the college. Rob is our current Men’s Basketball Coach. Robert “Rob” Haynes a Far Rockaway, New York native dreamed of coming to California to play basketball as he spent countless hours in the

park working on his game. He first visited Porterville College in 2001, while playing for the San Francisco City College Men’s Basketball Team. During pre-season play with City College, Rob was faced with an injury which led him back to New York. After recovery, he was faced with finding a new school to attend and play basketball. With the help of Coach Troy Johnson, Rob became a Porterville College Pirate in the late summer of 2003.

Under head coach Scott Elitelgeorge, Rob was named team captain for the 2003-2004 season. Rob was named to Bakersfield College’s all-tournament team, averaging 13.5 points and nine rebounds and Skyline College’s all-tournament team. After the 2003-2004 season Rob was ranked fourth in rebounds in the Central Valley Conference. He averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, per game. The Central Valley Conference named Rob to the All-Conference Team, All-Defensive Team, All-Freshman Team, and Co-Freshman of the Year. In conference play, Rob lead all conference freshman in scoring.

Remaining under Scott Eitlegeorge, Rob was named team captain for the 2004-2005 season. The Central Valley Conference named Rob to the All-Defense Team. In conference play, Rob lead the conference in rebounding. He was named under the top 100 players in California Junior College Basketball. His sophomore year was excited as he was heavily recruited to play basketball at the next level. Rob was honored to sign and accepted a full scholarship to play for a Colorado State University.

Rob received his Associate of Science, Social Science from Porterville College in 2005 and ultimately completed his Master’s Degree of Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific in 2013. Although Rob does not play competitive basketball anymore, his passion and love for the game has transitioned as he is now honored to coach Men’s Basketball for Porterville College.

Virginia Gurrola is the 2017 Distinguished Hall of Fame inductee. Virginia attended Porterville College as a student and was an employee of the college. Virginia has retired but continues to support PC in the community.

Virginia Gurrola is a first generation college graduate from Porterville College and California State University, Bakersfield. Her family crossed from Mexico in the early 1900’s to capture a part of the American Dream and instilled in their family that anything is possible. Virginia is very proud and humble of her family roots. She was born in Lindsay, a small town comprised of the agriculture industry. Virginia is one of seven children born to Mary and Felipe Rivera.

In 1976 Virginia was hired to serve as the Secretary to the Director of Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS). Eventually, she became the director where

she initiated one of the most successful grassroots recruitment projects to increase Hispanic enrollment at thecollege. Virginia continued to hold several leadership positions at PC including Director of the Financial Aid Department, Admissions and Records Office, and the Executive Director to the PC Foundation. If you talk to Virginia she will tell you one of most significant accomplishments she cherishes is being a part of so many students’ lives, their educational goals and the lasting relationships with many of them to this day.

PTSD Information

Written by Erin Sullivan Arcos

With the downsizing of the U.S. mili-tary and the increase in educational benefits provided by the government, many veterans are enrolling in community colleges. As you may or may not know, veterans are at a higher risk of developing PTSD and/or major depression. PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental disorder that some people develop

after experiencing or witnessing a trauma. Not all trauma survivors develop a permanent disorder. Terms like, “battle fatigue” and “shell shock” are terms that have been used to describe what is now considered PTSD. Research has shown that the term PTSD negatively labels, which further stigmatizes veterans with mental problems. To foster academic success faculty and staff must recognize the potential learning challenges associated with these invisible injuries and make adjustments or implement accom-modations to help ensure their stu-dents’ academic success. On Flex Day, I was afforded the opportunity to provide information to my peers and colleagues on possible

accommodations for our veterans with PTSD. I am extremely grateful to the Administration for allowing me to do a presentation on this subject.

I would like to thank PC veteran graduate Edward Gallardo for sharing his personal experiences, which moved us all.

Other presentations available during the Spring semester:

“This is a Test…This is Only a Test: Test Taking Strategies.”

“Challenging Stigma and Discrimination: Starting the Conversation about Mental Health.”

In 1995 Virginia Gurrola was elected to serve as the first Mexican American woman on the Porterville City Council and serve as its Mayor. She completed her twelfth year on the council after serving from 1995 to 2003 and 2012 to December 2016. During her tenure on the city council, she has been appointed to several Tulare County committees, served on the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control Board (SJVU APCB) and proposed numerous city projects.

Virginia has always been committed to community service. She has served as a past President of the Commission Honorific Mexicana-Americana, Inc., Family Crises Center Board and currently is the President of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She is committed to changing the lives of children and assisting girls and women in “breaking through educational and economic barriers”.

Virginia Gurrola retired from Porterville College in 2013 after completing a thirty-seven year career. She is married to the love of her life Salvador Gurrola for 47 year. Together they have three sons, nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Virginia enjoys spending time with family, hiking in our beautiful mountains and takes pleasure in God’s blessings. Virginia has stated the inspiration in her life is - and always has been - God and her family.

Native American Club at PC High School Senior Day

Story by Alicia Dabney, Photo by Deekay Fox

The Mission of the Native American Club is to inspire and strengthen students to persevere through life; to bring awareness of the Native American Culture and through leadership.

One of my many goals as president is to not only educate other people of our culture, but talk to the younger generation and keep them interested into coming to college and hopefully, if they enjoy it, go and visit university’s to expand their minds.

I encourage other students that aren’t Native Amer-ican to be apart of our club so they can learn about our culture as we learn about theirs.

A Sad Passing - Norma J. Hodge

Norma J. Hodge - PC Retiree passed away on January 20, 2017. Norma’s educational career started with working for Porterville Unified School District, first at Porterville High, then at the new campus of Monache High. Eventually Porterville College gained her skills as Director of Admissions & Records until her retirement in May 1998. Norma leaves behind her two children

and their spouses, Susan and Terry Cope and John and Sarah Hodge as well as 5 grandchildren - Joshua, Nathaniel & Larissa Cope, Malachi and Hannah Hodge; 2 great grandchildren - Avery Nunez & Arthur Cope. As well as a host of close friends. Below are some fond memories shared by other PC Retirees on knowing and working with Norma..

Below are some fond memories shared by other PC Staff on knowing and working with Norma.“I loved working with Norma at Porterville College. She was always very professional and fair in all her contacts with staff and students. She had high standards for herself personally as well as professionally. She could be serious and fun all in the same breath. We enjoyed many great conversations through the 9 years I worked as a staff member which were mostly about family and work. She took a personal interest in my son, Rob, who was a student/graduate of PC, and followed with great interest in his further education and graduation with a BA in Education.

On September 2016, we had a reunion lunch in Rocklin, CA and reminisced about our PC staff days. I know for sure she is now with the Lord and enjoying a pain-free and unrestricted life in heaven. She loved the Lord, her family and many, many friends. We will all miss her deeply, but will carry her memory in our heart and thoughts. “

Lovingly, LouAnne Gregor-Mariano

(PC Staff Retiree, 1985-1994)

“When I first started as a counselor at Porterville College, I wanted to make sure I was giving students the right answer, so when I had a questionI would call Norma. She was anencyclopedia of information and knew the catalog by heart. Each time I would call her, she would answer my question almost verbatim to what was printed in the catalog. After a while, I thought she began to get tired of answering my questions, because instead of giving me the answer she would say, “Steve, you can find the answer on page 20 of the catalog.” Or “Steve, the answer to your question is on the yellow form by the front door of the Admissionoffice.” After a while, I quit calling her because I knew where to find the answer. It took years for me to realize that she wasn’t getting tired of answering my questions at all, rather, she was helping me to become a better counselor by encouraging me to find the answers myself. When she retired, the campus missed her extensive knowledge and experienc-es, and I missed her hearty laugh.” Steve Schultz, (PC Staff Retiree

1989-2016)

“Norma Hodge was a great person to have as a boss. People loved her laugh and her quick wit. She wanted the job done correctly and the rules and regulations followed. This approach was not always appreciated by her colleagues, but was respected. In fact, Norma was quoted several times in the Curriculum Committee meetings after her retirement. Norma had a profound effect on my career; she pushed me to achieve and encouraged me to be self-assured. She will always be remembered.” Olene Burkhart

(PC Staff Retiree, 1976-2007)

“I first knew Norma as a student at Monache High School and she was in admissions when we turned in an absence note. I remembered her when in later years I came to work at Porterville College. Norma has always been a very memorable person because of her reassuring smile to everyone, her always nat-urally helping heart and that WON-DERFUL laugh! You could always hear Norma’s laugh across the building.” Carol Brown

Operation Lend a Hand - January 28, 2017

Students and staff from Operation Lend a Hand (OLAH) partnered with employees of the Central California Crisis Center to participate in the City of Porterville’s annual Point in Time Project.

The goal of the Project is to contact, and survey homeless individuals on the streets or in the areas that they frequent, in an effort to gather information regarding the specific needs of that population. That data is then used to develop programs and provide services to the homeless in the Porterville area. The group focused on people living in small encampments along the banks of the Tule River. The work resulted

in 25 completed surveys. Those willing to complete the surveys were rewarded with new sleeping bags, $15.00 gift cards from Grocery Warehouse, and “blessing bags (bags containing miscellaneous hygiene products, socks, wool caps, etc.) that were donated by various organizations.

All in all, it was a most successful day. Operation Lend a Hand is a branch of the Student Veterans Organization (SVO) and the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at Porterville College.

Student Trustee for Kern CC

Serving as a Student Trustee for the Kern Community College District has been an amazing experience. It is quite an honor to serve on the board with such accomplished individuals.

I aspire to be ultra successful and I believe in order to reach that goal, effective communication is crucial. I don’t see myself working hard, I work hard but I try to work smart. KCCD Board Trustee Mark Storch gave me advise in a brief conversation shortly after I became the Student Trustee. I admired the humility trustees possess. As a young adult, I see this and it influences me to always want to assist and to never become pompous with my actions or words.Jose Herrera and Deekay Fox

“The Power of Place”

The spring semester for PC’s Cultural and Historical Awareness Program (CHAP) began on February 9th, continuing this year’s theme of “The Power of Place” with a poetry reading by the celebrated and award-winning poet, Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing at UC-Riverside and Santa Barbara native Christopher Buckley.

Buckley read selected poems from his most recent collection, Star Journal, and explained the stories behind them, often involving reflections on his youth. His presentation, “Marking Me Home: 35 Years of Poems from California” was shared with a packed house, and afterwards he signed copies of his books - including several copies for the library’s collection.

The photo shows Mr. Buckley (center) with CHAP coordinator and PC Anthropology Professor Robert Simpkins (left) and Language Arts Professor Catherine Hodges (right), a fellow poet who invited Mr. Buckley to visit the campus.

Porterville College and Achieving the Dream Efforts

February 15, 2017 - Porterville College has had great successes in our Achieving the Dream (ATD) efforts. Over the past three years PC has engaged with staff, faculty and students across campus to work to fulfill the goals of the ATD Initiative by building pro-grams and services that are framed within the ATD priorities that the college developed. The priorities are:

1) Develop Accelerated Pathways through the basic skills and into transfer level courses; 2) Redesign the ESL Program to reflect the needs of the Porterville community; 3) Remove processes and procedures that create barriers for student success; and 4) Develop student social support programs to assist students with life situation. Below is a list of a few PC’s achievements within priority number 4:• Created a food pantry that is housed in Financial Aid;• Created a Resource Center that hosts community organization such as Tulare CASA;• Partnered with Tulare Mental Health to provide support for our students who are in need of their support;• Partnered with Fresno State Educational Talent Search to help identify future PC students in our local K-12 schools;• Implemented the Navigate on-boarding software that will help PC identify students in need of specific services and assist students with educational planning; • Expanded EOPS from 280 (2013) to 790 (2016);• Increased support staff (Adjunct Counselor and ½ Educational Advisor) in the DRC and Veterans Resources Center (Program Tech);• Expanded the hours of operation at the Child Development Center;• Placed an Adjunct Counselor at the PUSD Adult School to assist in transitioning Adult School students to PC; • Reduced the amount of time students have to wait to receive Financial Aid; and• Reduced the amount of time that transcripts are evaluated. I think the key to what we have been able to achieve is simple – PC reflects the priorities of its community. Porterville College values our PC family; we value faith/trust in one another; and we value the work each one of us puts forward to provide the best services possible. In times of social and personal volatility we are the stability many of our students need.
