For me it is important because school ends in Lodi Unified on June 3rd, opening the way for two whole months when I will not be seeing students. I will miss them but not the five-day a week grind. On that same day my granddaughter graduates from Ripon High School. Hopefully, I will not see her less but she will be off to study in Chico and begin a life of her own so I don’t know. The SIRS Picnic is in the middle of June, Fathers’ Day is the 19th and the Missus and I will begin a cruise to Alaska on the 3oth. Since I have never been on a cruise (except one provided by the US Army), I’m a bit excited. For our SIR members we have June 3 National Doughnut Day; June 7-Election Day; June 14- Flag Day; June 16-Our Picnic. I think that over the years, most of us have paid homage to King Doughnut (and not always on the Day) but it is extremely important that we all participate in the next three holidays-Election Day and Flag Day and Our Picnic. Please vote, fly the flag and come to Our Picnic. Speaking of Our Picnic, the membership of this club never ceases to amaze me. Several members who had key roles at last year’s picnic have other commitments for June 16. Within minutes, we had volunteers to help out-Thanks!! We’re expecting to have a great event and if you have not yet signed up, come to Micke Grove in the Mokelumne Area and join us! (After paying the nominal fee of $17 per person of course). Another mark of an outstanding club is its financial responsibility. Folks, for the 4th month in a row we have hit our goal of contributing at least $3.00 per member to the Bucket Brigade. Twenty dollars ($17 meal and $3 for the Brigade) is not too much to pay for a good meal, an excellent program and great companionship. A third mark of an outstanding club is its ability to adopt and adapt to change. Last meeting the committee reports were given during the eating time- the reports were heard, and I hope some of us will be joining in these activities. Finally, a vote of thanks to John Mendonca for taking the helm of our Senior Awareness Day Project, to Ron Korock, Pete LePisto, Lee Talbot, Dave Derksen, and many others for the extras that they do to make the club better. The monthly bulletin of Port Stockton Branch 46 of Sons In

Retirement, a California non-profit corporation chartered July 23, 1974.

NEXT MEETING: PICNIC, JUNE 16, NOON, MICKE GROVE

BIG SIR GREETING

JUNE - 2016 June is a significant month for me and for our SIR

members as well. For me it is important because school

ends in Lodi Unified on June 3rd, opening the way for

two whole months when I will not be seeing students. I

will miss them but not the five-day a week grind. On

that same day my granddaughter graduates from Ripon

High School. Hopefully, I will not see her less but she

will be off to study in Chico and begin a life of her own

so I don’t know. The SIRS Picnic is in the middle of

June, Fathers’ Day is the 19th and the Missus and I will

begin a cruise to Alaska on the 3oth. Since I have never

been on a cruise (except one provided by the US Army),

I’m a bit excited. For our SIR members we have June 3

–National Doughnut Day; June 7-Election Day; June 14-

Flag Day; June 16-Our Picnic. I think that over the

years, most of us have paid homage to King Doughnut

(and not always on the Day) but it is extremely

important that we all participate in the next three

holidays-Election Day and Flag Day and Our Picnic.

Please vote, fly the flag and come to Our Picnic.

Speaking of Our Picnic, the membership of this club

never ceases to amaze me. Several members who had

key roles at last year’s picnic have other commitments

for June 16. Within minutes, we had volunteers to help

out-Thanks!! We’re expecting to have a great event and

if you have not yet signed up, come to Micke Grove in

the Mokelumne Area and join us! (After paying the

nominal fee of $17 per person of course). Another

mark of an outstanding club is its financial

responsibility. Folks, for the 4th month in a row we

have hit our goal of contributing at least $3.00 per

member to the Bucket Brigade. Twenty dollars ($17

meal and $3 for the Brigade) is not too much to pay for a

good meal, an excellent program and great

companionship. A third mark of an outstanding club is

its ability to adopt and adapt to change. Last meeting

the committee reports were given during the eating time-

the reports were heard, and I hope some of us will be

joining in these activities.

Finally, a vote of thanks to John Mendonca for taking

the helm of our Senior Awareness Day Project, to Ron

Korock, Pete LePisto, Lee Talbot, Dave Derksen, and

many others for the extras that they do to make the club

better. Thanks especially to Jack Lamberty and Bob

Stewart for keeping me on the straight and narrow. See

you on the 16!

First, we want to apologize for the error

in last month’s (May) website write up.

The link address was incorrect, and you

could not access the website by clicking

on the link provided in the write up. My

Word program immediately notifies me

of any misspelling and extra spaces. But

it can’t pick up a major glitch like that.

#!!%#!! computers! The latest (June

2016) Computer Newsletter by Bill

Bromily is now on the website. Just click

on the Computer link. Among some of

the interesting articles is a write up about

low cost hearing aids now being sold by

the electronics industry. These are called

PSAPs, an acronym for Personal Sound

Amplification, and has the current

manufacturers, such as Starkey, worried.

Also included in the Newsletter are

articles about the serious problem of

“Ransomeware” where hackers will

invade your computer, “kidnap” your

files, and charge you a hefty price to

release them back to you. Plus, if you

have “Apple Quick Time” on your

computer, there is an article that

recommends you get rid of it

immediately due to its vulnerability to

hackers.

ROMEO 3 AT UJ’S

State Sir Happenings The quarterly edition of the State Sir Newsletter is available on the SIR website. Just click on http://sirinc.org/sirhappenings/ . You may have to use the CTRL-click feature to do this. In this edition President Don Dill’s column presents a summary of the results of Project 2016 which involved surveys and Field Focus groups. There were three main concerns expressed by the SIR membership: (1) the continuing problem of our declining membership, (2) the need for publicity or how to get our Branch message to prospective members, and (3) the need to reduce the number of rules, simplify the manual, and improve communication with the branches. Additionally, there are many HLM (Honorary Life Membership) awards reported plus lots of write-ups on branch activities. Also, for the fishermen, there is an expanded write-up on the August 3-7 Alaskan fishing trip.

MAY LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS

The speakers for the May luncheon were members of the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR). The PGR is a motorcycle organization primarily dedicated to providing an escort service for the funerals of veterans. The main speaker was Mr. John Silva, the Asst. State Captain for the North Central PGR. Accompanying him were four additional members from the North Central California area. All were veterans and Mr. Silva stated that 95% of all California Riders are veterans. The PGR had its origin in 2005 in Kansas when the American Legion Riders were formed to provide escort services to the funerals of veterans. This was necessary to counteract the activities of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka who were attending veterans’ funerals and attempting to intimidate family members with hate signs such as “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”. These motorcycle clubs and their mission spread throughout the U.S., and the California PGR is currently active in the area with the same goals. A video was shown depicting some of the PGR’s activities including their attendance at a veteran’s funeral where they were able to protect the family and successfully minimize the hate group’s presence. For a veteran’s funeral, if requested, they will visit the family at their home to present a flag, provide a specially-minted coin to the family as a remembrance, and then, starting at the family’s house, provide a motorcycle escort to the cemetery. Mr. Silva strongly emphasized that the family must request this service. The PGR also has started welcoming servicemen and women who are just returning after overseas tours. These activities take place at the first point of arrival in the U.S. For any veteran, the PGR will provide escorts to the cemetery and present a flag to the veteran’s family. Mr. Silva may be contacted as follows: John Silva 209 479-8300 [email protected] The website for the Patriot Guard Riders is http://combatvet.org
