NEXT MEETING: SEPTEMBER 15th Thursday at 12:00 noon BIG SIR GREETING SEPTEMBER - 2016 Welcome to September! We begin the month by celebrating Emma Mills Nutt Day on September 1. Most of us pay homage to her every day of the year when we call home. Emma was the world’s first female telephone operator. We then move on to Be Late for Something Day on the 5 th (if anything will make you late it is a fifth). Labor Day (when no one works) follows on the 7 th and towards the end of the month we find Respect for the Aged Day and Elephant Appreciation Day on September 21. On the date of our next meeting, September 15, we celebrate Felt Hat Day, and on that same date, in Mexico, Grito de Dolores (loosely translated to cry of pain). This last date is important because it is Mexico’s true Independence Day. May 5 th is an important day but not the recognized day of independence. I spent two days in the town of Zacatecas, Mexico in August helping to fit 886 needy folks with glasses at a Lions Club Clinic. I was there a total of six days, soaking up Mexican history, helping their economy and generally enjoying myself. I stayed with a Mexican family, rode the Teleferico, was tempted by a zip-line, visited a famous battlefield and met the Zacatecas State governor (I have pictures for non-believers). As a culminating event, I rushed home so I could be at the August 18 meeting of SIR Branch #46. The August SIR luncheon was another enjoyable occasion. We had 52 members along with four guests for a total of 56 paid. Our speaker was Linda Nava who spoke about one of the continuing education programs at Delta College. She did an excellent job of presenting some of the activities that are out there for us older folk. We also did a great job with the Bucket Brigade, bringing in an average of $3.06 per member. Thanks folks-we needed that! I also met a man with the same name as my son, Chuck Wagner, who was a guest of Jim Morgali. Keep those guests coming- especially if their name is Wagner! I look forward to seeing you on Felt Hat Day at the Elkhorn. If I can find one of my dad’s hats, I will wear one; if not, I’ll be Old Baldy. Thanks again to each of you for your great support. BIG SIR GREETING

SEPTEMBER - 2016 Welcome to September! We begin the month by celebrating Emma Mills Nutt Day on September 1. Most of us pay homage to her every day of the year when we call home. Emma was the world’s first female telephone operator. We then move on to Be Late for Something Day on the 5th (if anything will make you late it is a fifth). On the date of our next meeting, September 15, we celebrate Felt Hat Day, and on that same date, in Mexico, Grito de Dolores (loosely translated to cry of pain). This last date is important because it is Mexico’s true Independence Day. May 5th is an important day but not the recognized day of independence. BRANCH 46 WEBSITE

http://branch46.sirinc2.org First, remember that you can access our website simply by using the ctrl, click feature on the above link. Try it and then check out the new, improved photo of Stockton’s waterfront. The travel link now contains travel opportunities extending to November, 2017. The computer link has been updated with the latest (September) edition of Bill Bromily’s Computer Newsletter. This month’s Newsletter contains several interesting articles including one on hydrogen-powered cars. We have hybrid cars (gas and battery-powered), all electric cars, and now comes hydrogen fueled

vehicles that produce electricity with a fuel cell in

the vehicle to power electric motors that drive the

wheels. The appeal of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is

that they help reduce carbon emissions. Fuel cells

combine hydrogen gas with oxygen from the

atmosphere to produce electricity and water vapor

that exits the vehicle via the tail pipe. Introduction of these clean vehicles is delayed due to the limited number of hydrogen fueling stations. California is offering incentives for more stations. Toyota makes the Mirai, and there are about 350 of these sedans registered in California today. Honda and Hyundai will have versions out in late 2016 and 2017. Other articles of interest include the current Silicon Valley trend to Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the latest method to unlock your smart phone –No PIN, no messy thumb print, no facial recognition. Just hold it up to your eye, and your phone will scan your iris for pattern recognition. Apparently every iris is different. SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON SPEAKER

Dr. Raj Patel is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. His primary teaching responsibilities include Medicare Part D. Over the past 10 years, he has over 100 research presentations and publications on Medicare Part D and beneficiary outcomes. Also, in terms of the presentation title, it will be “Medicare Part D- What you need to know!”

Editor’s note: Based on information from Dr. Patel and his students, my wife and I have changed both our Medicare Supplemental and Part D insurance companies and are very satisfied with the results.

RoboCalls By Jack Lamberty If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, it’s a robocall. Internet-

powered phone systems have made it cheap and easy for scammers to make illegal calls from anywhere in

the world and to hide from law enforcement by displaying fake caller ID information. At the August

luncheon Bob Westwood brought up the subject of robocalls and told us how he was able to stop them in

his phone system. All that’s required is a computer and access to the internet. Here’s the procedure. Or at

least part of it.

1. Log in to Google on your computer

2. Type in “nomorobo” (guess what this stands for)

3. This will bring up a list of websites that you can use to stop robocalls.

4. Click on the website that says something about “free setup” This was the first listed on mine.

5. Scroll down until you see the box which says “landline only” and then down further is “sign up

now”

6. Click on “sign up now” which brings up another screen with steps listed

7. On step 1, under “type” click on down arrow and then “Landline/VoIP”

8. Now under “Carrier”, click on down arrow and then on your carrier. You can also click on “Mobile”

and then your mobile carrier, but mobile has a monthly fee and I didn’t mess with this option.

9. Enter your E-mail address and click on “Next”

10. You will get a notice that your carrier has sent you an E-mail with further instructions.

11. And the rest is up to you. I know you’re saying “Thanks a lot!” at this point, but follow the

steps/procedures in the Email and hopefully you can get set up. I wish I could provide more steps

at this point, but both Bob and I had problems at this stage. We finally went back to the original E-

mail page and used the “help” link and then the “submit a request” link and explained our

problem in detail. In two or three days Bob received additional instructions and help which

allowed him to get setup, and he hasn’t received a robocall since. I submitted mine as I write this

and will let you know what happened. Bob Westwood’s carrier is ATT U-verse and mine is

Comcast/Xfinity. We strongly suggest you go through this “help” and “submit a request” link

method if you have trouble. Be as detailed as you can. It may take a few days for an answer, but

it should produce results.

IN MEMORIAM

Sadly, we must report the passing of Sir Pete Pedersen. Pete was a longtime

member of Branch 46, having joined in 2000 and was an active participant in

our branch golf activities. Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to

the family and friends of Pete at this sad time in their lives.
