PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce5

I want to thank San Joaquin

County Sheriff Steve Moore and

Stockton Chief of Police Eric Jones

for helping the Chamber in the

August Port O Call to educate

and inform on how hard they and

their departments are working to

protect us all and how coordinated

they and their departments are!

We thank them and their officers

for all they do and we pray that

they will all be safe as they patrol

our streets 24/7, 365!

I also want to thank a great Chamber member and large

employer, Dorfman-Pacific Company, for a great mixer on

Thursday, August 2. Their staff and ours worked very hard so that

the large crowd in attendance not only came away having a great

time, but also got to know so much more about a great company

that provides many jobs and also sends hats around the world with

the name “STOCKTON” for all to see.

I cordially invite and strongly encourage all of you to attend

the Chamber’s 48th Annual Industrial Technology Barbeque on

Wednesday, September 12 at the University Waterfront Hotel as we

honor those companies that—even during these hard economic

times—had the confidence to begin or expand their businesses.

Please make your reservations, for this is always a sellout event.

I am often asked how the public can help the Chamber, City and

County get through these challenging times. The most direct, most

effective and most efficient way is to keep your shopping dollars

here in our community. Every purchase, every day brings almost

70 cents from every sales tax dollar back to our community. By

SHOPPING STOCKTON FIRST, our families, friends, residents

and businesses will be helping Stockton to move forward toward a

bright and prosperous present and future!

From Your CEO...by: Doug Wilhoit

Theodore Roosevelt once said: “The first requisite of a good

citizen in this Republic [i.e. City of Stockton] of ours is that

he [or she] shall be able and willing to pull his [or her] own

weight!” That is to say that during the difficult times we are

experiencing here in Stockton, in the State of California and

the nation, it is not just a few who must right the wrongs—

whether they’re real or perceived—but all of us must “row

the boat” in the same direction with the entire community

of citizens as a total in mind (not just a few). Nor must we

expect a few to solve the difficult problems of today’s complex

and somewhat dysfunctional society, which we have become

mainly by the bad practice of apathy. Note the poor and dismal

turnout at the ballot box each year.

To that point, William James (1842-1910) said about voting:

“There is but one unconditional commandment, which is that

we should seek incessantly, with fear and trembling, so to vote

and to act as to bring about the very largest total universe of

good which we can see.” He also stated: “So our self-feeling in

this world depends entirely on what we back ourselves to be

and do!”

It is incumbent on all of us to not just read, watch or listen

to slanted opinions by news sources or talking heads who

want to lead you around by the nose to their way of political

thinking or candidates who give to you what they think you

want to hear, but often do not tell what you need to hear.

It is so important that you instead take the time to fully

research the sometimes complex issues and candidates so

you can make the best decision on what will work and who

can work within the system to not only get things done, but

also change what has gone awry within our local, state and

national governments. As a legal citizen with the God given

right to vote, you have an absolute responsibility to exercise

that right correctly, faithfully, honestly and with a passion

for making life better for yourself, your family and all

who are law abiding, taxpaying, hard working and honest

citizens of this city, county, state and nation. Please do your

homework and vote with a clear mind, so that you have

served yourself and your fellow citizens well! At the same

time, just think about the people who fought, and the many

who died, to protect a right that we have a duty to exercise

with clear and honest preparation and with due diligence.

As you know, many news outlets from around the world

have been here and my practice is not to talk to them. In

most cases, they leave with a minuscule and quick view of our

community with only the negative and do not take the time

to show much of the good that abounds. I do gladly speak to

our local media for I can reach out and confront them if the

reporting is not fair and balanced. I must say that, for the most

part, I have not had to do that and for that I thank them.

To that point of good that abounds, there is always a silver

lining. Some of you may remember I held a little contest on

what the number 10.4 million means between the years 2004

and 2012. Many tried, but nobody came up with the right

answer so the prizes are secure.

There are those who still criticize the great redevelopment

(yes some contractual mistakes and missteps were made) that

has taken place in our downtown that was dying on the vine. I

Page 7: Port O Call - September 2012

SEp2012 7www.stocktonchamber.org

have written that some of those same folks years from now, if the land

was vacant, would be the first to sniffle that the jewel the waterfront

is was not developed.

So, the number 10.4 million

is the number of people who

came downtown during that

time for the Cineplex, the

Bob Hope/Fox Theater, the

Arena and the Banner Island/

Stockton Ballpark, and that

does not even take into account the Asparagus Festival and

other events at the Weber Point Event Center. That was also

more business for the private investors and tax revenue to the

city that otherwise would not have happened. We must continue

to support these venues, business owners and teams who are so

much a GOOD part of Stockton!

As a community,

together as one, we can

come out of a negative

and dull light into a

bright light, or as Charles

Dickens wrote: “A long

pull, and a strong pull,

and a pull all together.”

And, “Bring in the bottled lightning, a clean tumbler and

a corkscrew.” Let’s get through this and then open that

bottle and celebrate that we all did it together as one great

community – Stockton, California.

you have served yourself and

your fellow citizens well!

Special Green Team San Joaquin Meeting Time

On behalf of the

Recycling Build

Infrastructure Now

(BIN) Coalition, we

invite you to attend

(or view via webinar)

our Recycling BIN

Summit II: “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs” on September 11 at the

Hilton Stockton. There is no cost to attend the event and

lunch is complimentary.

The BIN Coalition now includes over 18 businesses,

environmental, economic development and non-profit

organizations working together to achieve increased

California recycled manufacturing, job creation and

business expansion.

The goal of this year’s Summit is to solidify our resolve

in building a stronger, more sustainable economy through

recycled content value-added manufacturing in California.

With over 80-95% of the recycled materials being shipped

outside of our state (specifically to Asian markets), so too are

our jobs, tax revenues and commerce.

The BIN Coalition agreed with the California State

Legislature when they declared that the health, safety

and welfare of the people of California depends upon the

development, stability and expansion of domestic markets

for the post-consumer wastes and secondary wastes collected

within the state (California Public Resources Code 42001.)

Please join the BIN Coalition in presenting our

collective solutions to expanding manufacturing jobs,

reducing Green House Gas and stimulating this very

important sector of our economy.

PORT CALL Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce14

Since 1965, the Stockton

community has gathered

together each September at

the Industrial Technology Barbecue to

honor businesses that have experienced

substantial growth over the previous

year. At the annual fall event, businesses

new to San Joaquin County are honored,

profiled and presented plaques alongside

companies that have called the greater

Stockton area home for decades, and

businesses that are growing a single location

are honored beside companies that operate

locations throughout the country.

This year will be the 48th annual IT

BBQ, and this time around the event will

honor seven businesses that have met

two or more of the criteria for growth: at

least 20 new jobs created in San Joaquin

County, at least 20,000 square feet of new

or expanded facility space or $1 million in

capital investment.

Three Greater Stockton Chamber of

Commerce members are being honored

at this year’s event. These three Chamber

businesses represent a wide range of the

companies that do business in the greater

Stockton area. Whether a company that has

recently expanded to Stockton like Allen

Distributing, or one which was founded

in San Joaquin County nearly a century

ago like Delicato Family Vineyards, these

businesses share one belief: that San

Joaquin County offers tangible future

benefits for their operations.

Delicato Family Vineyards

Delicato Family Vineyards was founded in

1924 when Gaspare Indelicato and his uncle

planted a vineyard in Manteca. Eighty-eight

years and three generations of family later,

Delicato Family Vineyards has blossomed

into one of the top ten wineries in the

United States in volume, with a variety of

well-respected labels distributed nationally

and in 60 markets around the world.

Throughout its growth from a small

vineyard to a powerhouse in the world

wine industry, Delicato Family Vineyards

has maintained and expanded its main

base of operations in Manteca. In this

past year, Delicato Family Vineyards has

grown the Manteca facility with a focus

on increased capacity and enhanced

wine quality says John Yarborough, VP

of Operations. “This year we’re adding

new red fermentation tanks, storage

tanks, barrel storage and additional

winemaking equipment that supports

our goal of achieving the highest wine

quality possible.”

“The new 550,000 square foot

case goods distribution center in

Manteca allows us to consolidate all

of our finished products from three

locations to one,” adds Yarborough.

“This significantly reduces the number

of trucks transporting product

between warehouses.”

Delicato Family Vineyard’s expansions

have allowed them to add an additional 10

new employees within the Manteca winery

over the last year, and Yarborough adds that

the winery is in the process of hiring even

more staff members.

This expansion will enable Delicato

Family Vineyard to continue growing its

core market of quality, mindfully grown,

super-premium wines into an even stronger

contender in the world market.

“Manteca is where the business started,

what we’re committed to and where the

growth is,” says Yarborough. “We have a

small winery in Napa and a small one in

Monterey, but this is our core business.”

Allen Distribution

Allen Distribution is a third-party

logistics provider that was founded

in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1988. The

private company is a major player in the

warehouse, distribution, transportation

and value added services industries across

the east coast of the United States, but until

this year has not reached into the west.

This year, after years of careful evaluation

of the market, the company made the major

step of establishing a west coast facility

48th Annual Industrial Technology BBQCelebrating Growth in Stocktonby: Justin Souza

COVER STORY

Page 15: Port O Call - September 2012

SEp2012 15www.stocktonchamber.org

in Stockton, from which it can dramatically

expand its customer base. Allen Distribution

now has a 190,000 square foot facility in

Stockton and, according to Chuck McCreary,

Manager of Sales and Marketing for the

company, it is in the process of finalizing

a deal to expand into an additional facility

nearby. “That will give us space to pursue

some additional opportunities in the

Stockton market.”

Allen Distribution’s goal is to replicate the

success of the company’s Pennsylvania-based

business in the west, with Stockton as the

business’ epicenter. “This has been a major

move for Allen Distribution,” says McCreary,

“But we know that our future growth is about

evolving into other markets and we identified

Stockton as the place to start.”

In addition to its considerable facility

expansions, Allen Distribution has added a

bevy of new jobs to the Stockton economy.

McCreary estimates that the firm currently

employs between 20 and 25 Stocktonians,

but that number will grow significantly as

the company’s needs—and market—expand.

“We like the Stockton area. We’re excited

about the opportunities that the Stockton

market will bring us and we’re proud to be

part of the community.”

Herrick Corporation

Herrick Corporation is an established

structural steel fabricator and erector operating

in California since 1921. Herrick currently

operates two facilities in California, including

its main office in Stockton.

Herrick Corporation’s 40-acre Stockton

facility includes more than 200,000 square

feet of indoor fabrication space and 50,000

square feet of outside fabrication space where

automated equipment can saw, cut, drill, burn

and camber materials. It’s this automated space

that Herrick Corporation has updated this year

in a major retooling of the facility, according

to Doug Griffin, President of Herrick

Corporation. This retooling, “incorporates

a lot more model technology for importing

information from drawings directly into

equipment,” said Griffin. “The equipment itself

is the latest and most advanced, so we’re able to

process different types of steel that we had to

do manually before.”

“It’s going to make us a little more efficient.

And within California, you’ve got to be a

little more competitive and a little more

efficient to compete with outside fabricators,”

added Griffin.

Herrick’s Stockton location currently

employs around 210 people. “One of our

greatest sources of pride is the number

of individuals we have hired, trained and

promoted from the local community,” said

Griffin, adding that the Herrick Corporation

is “very proud to be in Stockton and we

do everything we can to support the local

economy. We look forward to a continued

strong future.”
