throUGh the Porthole the VIew From the helm

By Cdr Marshall Bellin, P

Welcome to our newest members: Diane Cass and Katherine Brighton.

One of the highlights of my tenure as commander will be looking back at the May dinner meeting. I had the great fortune of being able to oversee: (1) The graduation of one of the ABC classes, (2) Pledge in two new members, and (3) Present one of our members with the United States Power Squadrons Life Member-ship award.

Many people merely belong to an organization for 25 years. Janet Dean has achieved this award by earning 25 Merit Marks as a member. Earning 25 Merit Marks means that a member has supported the Squadron by performing a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service each year. Janet has volunteered and put in the hours for 25 years. Please congratulate Janet the next time you see her. This is a great honor and she is well deserving of this recognition.

One of the best ways to boat safely is to insure your vessel is seaworthy and properly equipped. We would like to have every boat owned by a squadron member go through a vessel safety check. Our squadron has set a goal of 100% participation by our boat owning members. This inspection is performed by our own members who are VSC certified. There is no charge for this inspection, and our inspectors will even come to your dock or storage area if you wish. Contact Ronnie Babin for more information or to schedule your inspection.

June 14 is Flag Day. We are planning to have a flag retirement ceremony later this year. This event will take place before a regular dinner meeting. If you have a flag that is worn, tattered, or just needs to be retired, bring it to the squadron office. Please feel free to collect flags that need to be properly retired from your friends and relatives. Once the date is chosen, it will be posted in the Mariner and an email blast will be sent out.

A while back I wrote about the danger of lightning while boating. I just ran across the January 2015 Boat US Seaworthy newsletter. It had some interesting lightning facts. Some of the more notable are: Multi-hull sailboats are most likely to be struck; bass boats are the least likely. Boats over 40 feet are the most likely; boats under 15 feet are the least likely. Men are 82% more likely to be struck by lightning than are women. And, just a reminder, Florida is the number 1 state for the most lightning strikes each year. If lightning is around (25 miles or less) please seek immediate shelter. \

Remember: Safe boating is no accident!

EDITOR’S NOTE: When I wrote on a test, “When entering a marina looking for a berth, don’t use a slip close enough for a sailboat’s mast to hit you when lightening strikes it, but just close enough to get the benefit of lightening striking the tallest object,” I was told that there is no place for levity in boating. The instructor did admit that I had learned his lesson!

By LT/C Tom Nolan SN (954) 421-0502Executive Officerhello from the executive department.

Last month we had Officer Paul McCormick of the Lighthouse Point Police department speak at our dinner meeting. Officer McCormick shared some interesting local stories from the infamous heydays of drug smuggling. Officer McCormick told us to safe out there and the Lighthouse Point Police depart-ment is there to help boaters be safe on the water.

next month’s guest speaker will be Jim “Chiefy” Mathie. Jim retired after 30 years with the Deerfield Beach Fire Rescue department as a Division Chief. Jim has been active in the city of Deerfield Beach and in the marine world as a diver, spear fisherman and author of two water activity books: “Catch-ing the BUG: The Comprehensive Guide to Catching the Spiny Lobster” and “Catching the Spear-it! The ABC’s of Spearfishing”. Jim has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Nova Southeastern in Public Administration and an Associate’s degree in Fire Science. Recently Jim has been involved in a new ar-tificial reef /underwater sculpture project called the “Rapa Nui Reef”. Please join us for his interesting talk.

the may 17th joint VSc event between the Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron and the US coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 34 went very well. It was my goal this year as Executive officer to make this happen and I am glad it finally did. I believe this is a first between our two groups even though we have existed in the same town for many years. It was a great way to celebrate Safe Boating Week. We all arrived to a rainy Alsdorf Park boat ramp at 8:00 AM but the skies cleared by 8:30 AM and the boaters started showing up. The PBSPS and USCGAUx teams worked together in pairs to complete many VEs throughout the day. Information was exchanged between the teams which will make us all better vessel safety examiners. P/C Ron Lafontaine AP was qualified during this exercise. Thanks to Joe Caraccia AP, P/C Ron Lafontaine AP, D/Lt/C Allan Furtado SN, P/C Ronald Ziller SN, and David Persing, JN. The USCGAUx Division 3 Vice Commander Marvin Merrit was present along with Flotilla 34 FSO-VE Bruno Berti and FSO-MS Bruce Fried. At noon we had a joint picnic with burgers and hot dogs that was enjoyed by many members of the flotilla and the squadron. Overall it was a great day. Thank you all who attended and participated.

our Vessel Safety check team led by Lt/C Ronnie Babin S continues to log more vessel safety exams. As of May 1st we have completed a total of 51Vessel safety exams (not including the joint VSC event). Remember the goal this year is to get 100% of our own squadron fleet to have VSCs! Please call Ronnie to get a free VSC on your vessel today (954) 232-3725.

how it all got Started - excerpts and Pictures from the historian website – United States Power Squadrons – 9 may 2015

Seldom does the complete story of an organization’s founding survive the passage of time. So we grope today for much of the story of our beginnings. This much is certain: in the list of founding

fathers the name of Roger Upton of Boston and Marblehead, Massachusetts stands pre-eminent. The “power squadron” idea was the projection of his thoughts.

To begin our story we must go back in time to the world of boating at the turn of the century. Recreational yachting in the early 1900s was largely confined to sailing craft and large steam yachts manned by professional crews. The commercial ships of the day were all steam-driven. Gasoline-driven craft were coming into their own by 1909 but with little enthusiasm on the part of out-and-out sailors. Yacht clubs taught and promoted the sport of sailing and as motor yachts joined the fleet there were few activities for them. Yachting was still for sailors and the new breed of powerboat men found scant fun on club cruises and almost none in racing.

Boston yacht club, marblehead, mass.

Roger Upton was a sailing member of the Boston Yacht Club in 1909 but, unlike so many other sailors, the newfangled powerboats captivated him. He owned a 50-foot ketch named Nirvana and often cruised up the coast to Maine. He bought a 35-foot motor launch with a gasoline engine to serve as tender for the ketch. The reliability of power appealed to him and he grew to love power boating.

In the summer of 1911 he spread his thoughts before a small group of his colleagues at the Boston Yacht Club. To quote from one of his articles, “To my mind the organization can be of use to yachtsmen for three major reasons: first, improvement in navigating ability of power-boat owners; second, promotion of acquaintance and social intercourse by the power-boat owners; third, the fitting of power-boat

owners to be of possible use to the Navy in time of war so that they might be received as volunteers should they so desire.”

Upton was elected Rear Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club in 1912. A self-taught navigator and stickler for do-ing things right, he soon kept the division’s 36 members busy with studies, cruises, races and drills modeled after U.S. Naval maneuvers. The social side of the organization included monthly dinners at which ship and tow captains, marine inspectors and others were guest speakers. There was a need for education at the time.

During the summer of 1912, twenty Power Boat Division vessels were invited to go with forty windjammers on the annual Boston Yacht Club cruise to Portland, Maine. During the cruise a screeching nor’wester blew up. Many of the sailing yachts were dismasted or otherwise disabled. The power yachts under Upton’s command went to their rescue, towing disabled craft to port. No losses were reported.

On 14 October 1912, a letter from Rear Commodore Roger Upton the Boston Yacht Club, (petitioned) the club to of-ficially establish (the) Power Boat Division. At the annual meeting in January 1913, the name was changed to “Power Squadron” and the club-within-a- club was officially recognized.

A distinguishing Power Squadron pennant was designed to be flown above the Yacht Club burgee. So ends the birth of the idea and its development into an active movement. But it was only the beginning.

I am happy to announce that Arline Ziller’s rehabbing of her leg injury is coming along fine and we look forward to seeing her back soon. Also, I am unhappy that there is one piece of bad news to report this month. Please turn to page 18 to read Doris’ article on the passing of P/Lt/C Duffy D’Ambrosio, who was a good

friend of ours and we have missed him. It is always sad when a friend passes on. If you have anything to report, contact me at: 954-782-9451 or leewdevane@bellsouth.

The replacement lighting project is well in progress thanks to the efforts of Ken Crocker. Hopefully, it will be done by the August meeting, Other than that there are no major issues with the property.

June dinner: Our June dinner gourmet chefs are Rich Walker and Tom Nolan. The menu will be steak and exquisite culinary side dishes. Give your taste buds a treat. I still need a chef for July as I am not sure Kathy and I will be in town. For August I will probably do peel and eat shrimp with Cajun fixings. I need chefs for the rest of the year. Sounds like a whole lot of work but there is always plenty of help. Planning the menu and doing the shopping is more involved than the actual cooking, Barb Garito and her crew always have the tables set 5 star style.

Boating Activities: Our monthly raft up is 14 June at Lake Boca. My boat is sold and in VA and we have a deposit on a new 33’ Grady-White Express. So I need a host boat for June.D8 Summer Rendezvous is in Islamorada 10 – 12 July. Check the D8 website.

Vessel Safety checks: Thanks to the efforts of Lt/C Tom Nolan, SN we had a very successful joint effort with USCGA for VSCs at the 14th Street Causeway. We are on track to have a banner year. Remember our goal is to have every boat in PBPS inspected and if you live on the water please recruit your neighbors.

Practical on The water Training This is an eight hour seminar with the perfect combination of classroom training and hands-on On-The-Water training. It provides an explana-tion of how your boat handles and why. Video clips let you visualize the maneuvers prior to your experiencing them on the water. It cov-ers use of lines, departing the dock, operating in a fairway, pivoting, mooring, backing, docking, steering - slalom, holding course - range, and a quick stop. Each student receives a copy of Powerboat Handling Illustrated, a DVD, a Student Manual, and a certificate acknowledg-

ing his/her training.Practical on the water training Seminar

The Squadron is offering the Practical On the Water Training Seminar on the weekend of September 12th. The classroom sessions are normally held on Saturday mornings followed by the on the water training Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday as required by the number of students enrolled.

The course involves one 3.5 hour classroom session before going on the water for practi-cal training and 1 hour review session after the on the water training. This can be com-pleted in approximately 8 hours. The cost of this course including the Student manual, DVD video and Powerboat Handling book, is $200 per student for USPS members. For non-member students the cost is $250. For family members and partners that can and choose to share the course manuals and DVD the cost will drop by $100 so that the total for partners is $300 for members or $400 for non-members.

The training is geared toward the new boater learning to operate a single engine boat in the 16 to 26 foot length. It is also an excellent primer for those members who are seeking to obtain the Inland Navigator certification. The seminar can count for the skills portion of the IN certi-fication.

Newsletters are wonderful ways to keep members informed of all the things going on in their own squadron. Looking forward to an event is part of the excitement and planning to attend is also. I think hearing about the event after it is past is a wake-up call for those who did not attend. Education is another thing to anticipate, so I try to get everything into the MARINER before-hand. Rendezvous and raft-ups help to keep up friendships and have a good time together.

But in order to do that an Editor has to have a lot of cooperation, especially from the Bridge. I have been very lucky in the past 21 years to have great writers for every month, except for Hurricane Wilma. But as the old saying goes, ‘Come hell or high water,” we managed to get the next one out. We are a resilient group.

Yes, my officers and chairmen always wrote a page or two for the benefit of the members. Some writers are better than others, but they were all very helpful in that direction.

We always had an Events area to let everyone know about all the events on or off the water. P/Lt/C Dave Nace did it for many years, in addition to his Treasurer’s duties. Now P/C Denice Porter is doing it. I want to thank them both for relieving me of the duty. I also say, “Thank you” to all the many officers and chair-men who so kindly wrote a lengthy article each month. It is always a pleasure to get a worthwhile group to work with.

No, I am not quitting, and the above is not about that. It is about the fact that so many squadrons have their newsletter on the internet. I have been reading a few others. Some are very good, and some have only one paragraph from some of the bridge, and none from the others.

Many times fine articles come from our members who also do a great job. Some members even send me articles for inclusion that they found elsewhere. So, I want everyone of “all of the above,” to know that I appreciate what they do, and heartily thank them for doing so.

To all our new members, please feel free to send me an article for inclusion in the MARINER. If you go to an interesting place, write about it and let us in on a good place to go. If it is not worthwhile going to, write about that. If you discover a new way to do something having to do with being aboard a boat, write about that. Either way, send me something fresh for the paper.

The May meeting went very well, the lecture was very interesting. The ambiance was cheerful and the gradu-ates were a happy group. The dinner was fine. Everyone seemed happy eating the Spanish style food and the alternative chicken was very tasty. The only thing I had to complain about is the fact that the bar has all kinds of goodies that I cannot drink, but does not stock the only one I can. I have a corn allergy, which cuts me off to very many things. The only one I found without it is Diet Coke with the caffeine in it. I hope the bar can stock that regular Diet Coke. I’m sure some other members might agree, Thanks in advance.

LAST HORIZONBy P/Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, Editor

In the 1980s Duffy D’Ambrosio was the SEO. He was in that position for many years and did a fine job of it. He was SEO when George and I came to Florida from South Shore Power Squadron, Long Island, NY.

George offered his services to Duffy. George had been running the Public Boating Class up north, and Duffy snared him. They became immediate good friends. Both bemoaned the fact that the boating end at the squad-ron was almost nothing. They set to work calling everyone who owned a boat. Members promised to attend the rendezvous, but did not show up. Week after week our two boats rafted up, but no one else came. We four (including his wife, Catherine) became good friends, but that was it. Catherine was quite shy, but I got her to join me at the Auxiliary that I had just joined. There we told our problem to the ladies and got a few more boats to attend. It was not until more people joined our efforts to stir up the old timers that we were able to get a good group together. But that is a different story.

The classes were taught in a separate building at the other side of the parking lot, and lasted until it almost fell apart. Now it is part of the extended parking lot and the classes are taught in the main building.

Duffy liked nothing better than to run his boat and teach his classes. He was an all around man and liked helping fix up the base. He spent a lot of time at the base and was responsible for helping reconstruct the building from a church to a squadron. He also maintained the Air Conditioning units with P/C Don Cardi for many years.

When he moved away he was missed by all, but he spent the time with his family and enjoyed his life until recently, when he passed away. May he rest in peace!
