Looking fabulous and holiday-appropriate

Independence Day is here again and there's no better time to flaunt your own personal style, as you celebrate our nation declaring its right to be free.

Start off by dressing appropriately for the day, bearing in mind that the outfit you're creating is not only about looking fabulous, but also about being patriotic. Wearing red, white and blue is your best option, but you don't have to wear a flag shirt to celebrate our national holiday. Instead, take a fashionable approach and put together some truly creative outfits of your own.

Mix and match different shades of red, white, and blue, with neutrals and metallics. Add some fun complementary details like stars and stripes, which will make any look you turned out in something that is all yours.

Casual Beach Look

On the 4th of July, the beach will certainly be filled with fun lovers, and if you're thinking of joining them, this is the time when you can be in a super carefree mode. To create a look that is suitable for the occasion, wear a red, white or

blue tank top with patriotic shorts. Accessorize with sandals or flats and a striped beach bag to coordinate the look.

Day Time Barbecue Look

If you decide to attend a backyard barbecue with the family, choose a cute, relaxed outfit. A large solid color T-shirt would be perfect for this, so that you can tie it into a knot and pair it with denim pants or a maxi length shirt. Wear canvas sneakers in red, white, or blue, and layer on some bracelets with any American symbol.

Oh, yeah....right – the dress! You spent time – and most likely a hefty investment – on your wedding dress selection; take the time to preserve it after the big day.

Your dress is a symbol of your special day and the most expensive item of clothing in your trousseau. Your preservationist will likely ask you to sign a waiver and while that is normal, you should also be sure to ask

them if they offer a guarantee.

The first step in the conservation process is cleaning – your cleaner will tell you this is the step of the utmost importance. Be detailed – full disclosure at its finest – for example;

sugar will turn brown over time and must be removed before storage. The sooner the better – the longer you wait the more set in and difficult any stains will be to remove.

The dress will be preserved in acid free tissue and boxed up in a museum quality archival box. You should also ask about including shoes, jewelry, veil, etc. – some of the materials may not be suitable for packing up with

your dress – but your preservationist will be able to guide you as to how to care for and store those items.

Money is important; no one will tell you different. You need money to have your basic needs met (e.g. food, clothing, shelter, etc.). There are many people in our society who struggle to earn enough to meet their basic needs. There are also others who do have enough and still strive for even more. In many instances earning more requires working more (which will reduce the time you have

available to spend with your family). If an individual is able to live comfortably (and have all of their basic needs met) then why do some still strive for more, even if it is at the expense of their family?

I am currently job hunting and “what is enough?” is one of the questions I have asked myself throughout this process. Some

positions I have considered applying for will require me to work more than others. I want my kids to remember the time the spent with me growing up and not what I can buy for them. Considering not only the financial needs, but also the emotional needs of my children has assisted me in keeping my priorities in perspective. Money isn’t everything.

your kidsThe term patriot is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a person

who loves and strongly supports or fights for his or her country”. Having recently attended my cousin’s graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point I decided to connect patriot to education through the armed forces. Broward County Public Schools has Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force sponsored JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) programs. Although joining the JROTC is not joining the

military and the majority of four-year JROTC completers decide to attend college rather than join the military, JROTC instructors are retired from active military service and certified to teach JROTC in accordance with their military branch. The mission of JROTC is to “motivate young people to become better citizens” and in the spirit of this mission, JROTC programs help build the competences associated with Merriam-Webster’s aforementioned definition of patriot. Both Blanche Ely and Pompano Beach High Schools have Army sponsored JROTC programs. Also associated with the Army JROTC is the Hollywood Hills High School Military Academy Magnet. Opened in 2012 and the first military academy in a Broward County public school, this program strives to provide students with a curriculum that cultivates leadership, discipline, patriotism, and honor.

A great way to keep our many Pompano Patriots in mind is to think about them as you pass Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8182 on Dixie Highway just south of Atlantic Boulevard. Established soon after the Spanish-American War, the VFW has been instrumental in gaining social, political, and economic benefits for veterans. Core VFW values include promoting patriotism and serving local communities.

What is diabetic retinopathy?Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness. It occurs when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels inside the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

How does diabetic retinopathy cause vision loss?Blood vessels damaged from diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss in two ways. Fragile, abnormal blood vessels can develop and leak blood into the center of the eye, blurring vision. This is proliferative retinopathy and is the fourth and most advanced stage of the disease. Fluid can leak into the center of the macula, the part of the eye where sharp, straight-ahead vision occurs. The fluid makes the macula swell, blurring vision. This condition is called macular edema. It can occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy, although it is more likely to occur as the disease progresses. About half of the people with proliferative retinopathy also have macular edema.

Who is at risk for diabetic retinopathy? All people with diabetes -- both type 1 and type 2 -- are at risk for diabetic retinopathy. People with diabetes are also at increased risk for cataract and glaucoma. That's why everyone with diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Between 40 to 45 percent of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have some stage of diabetic retinopathy.

Does diabetic retinopathy have any symptoms?Diabetic retinopathy often has no early warning signs. Don't wait for symptoms. Be sure to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.

What are the symptoms of proliferative retinopathy if bleeding occurs? At first, you will see a few specks of blood, or spots, "floating" in your vision. If spots occur, see your eye doctor as soon as possible. You need to be examined by your eye doctor at the first sign of blurred vision. If left untreated, proliferative retinopathy can cause severe vision loss and even blindness.

How are diabetic retinopathy and macular edema detected?Diabetic retinopathy and macular edema are detected during a comprehensive eye exam that includes a visual acuity test, dilated eye exam, and tonometry. A visual

acuity test is an eye chart test that measures how well you see at various distances. In a dilated eye exam, drops are placed in your eyes to widen, or dilate, the pupils. Your eye doctor uses a special magnifying lens to examine your retina and optic nerve for signs of damage and other eye problems. After the exam, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours. With tonometry, an instrument measures the pressure inside the eye. Numbing drops may be applied to your eye for this test. During the dilated eye exam, your eye doctor checks your retina for early signs of the disease. Signs may include leaking blood vessels, retinal swelling, fatty deposits on the retina, damaged nerve tissue, or any changes to the blood vessels.

How is diabetic retinopathy treated?During the first three stages of diabetic retinopathy, no treatment is needed, unless you have macular edema. To prevent progression of diabetic retinopathy, people with diabetes should control their levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol. Proliferative retinopathy is treated with laser surgery. Scatter laser treatment helps to shrink the abnormal blood vessels. Two or more sessions usually are required to complete treatment. Although you may notice some loss of your side vision, scatter laser treatment can save the rest of your sight. Scatter laser treatment may slightly reduce your color vision and night vision. If the bleeding is severe, you may need a surgical procedure called a vitrectomy. During a vitrectomy, blood is removed from the center of your eye.

What happens during laser treatment? Both focal and scatter laser treatment are performed in your doctor's office or eye clinic. Before the surgery, your doctor will dilate your pupil and apply drops to numb the eye. The area behind your eye also may be numbed to prevent discomfort. The lights in the office will be dim. During the procedure, you may see flashes of light. These flashes eventually may create a stinging sensation that can be uncomfortable. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery. For the rest of the day, your vision will probably be a little blurry.

What can I do to protect my vision?The National Eye Institute urges everyone with diabetes to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once

We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. The 1947 hurricanes

In 1947, South Florida was struck by two "wet" hurricanes, leaving much of the peninsula south of Lake Okeechobee under water. This photograph shows some of the standing water looking south on NW 3rd Avenue toward Hammondville Road. The heavy flooding led the state and federal governments to create agencies to address how to regulate the flow of water, which included flood control districts such as the South Florida Water Management district.

If you were here in 2005, you remember Wilma. If you were here in any one of the previous decades, then you remember many other hurricane seasons that were not as blessedly quiet as those of the past ten years or so. Regardless, hurricane season has begun, of course, and our city's website contains a wealth of information about hurricane preparedness. You can sign up to get text messages in the event of certain emergencies, and if you're interested, you can even answer a few simple questions and get your own personalized preparedness plan.

ANOTHER "BIRTHDAY" TO REMEMBER

I decided to do a little research on Patriotism this week. The internet can be a brilliant resource when trying to understand why things are as they are. And by this, I refer to the historical data and documented facts available to any of us with just a couple of keystrokes. I know you must be thinking to yourself, “Surely she must have meant to write November 11th…the day America honors all of our veterans for their sacrifices and willingness to serve.”

No, there is no typo. I intentionally wrote the 10th. And while our country officially recognizes November 11th as a day of celebration and appreciation, a long time ago it was clearly communicated that it was necessary to begin the celebration a little earlier.

For a number of years, I lived with a Marine. And if you know a Marine, you certainly know that November 10th is, in fact, the Marine Corps birthday. In my lifetime, I have been personally impacted by a great number of military servicemen and women, as I’m sure many of you have. I have a deep appreciation for them all, and admire them for the passion with which they defend our country. They have a level of patriotism that I know I can never match. And they are willing to put their lives on the line for all of us. Last year, there was a great deal of fanfare and excitement about the movie American Sniper. In fact, it ended up being the highest grossing movie of 2014. I still haven’t seen it. But it did make me pause to consider what causes moviegoers to be so enamored by feature films that are focused on war. I have a hard time seeing it as an entertainment factor, the same way I do not comprehend the draw of so many successful video games that focus on gunning down a target. On the other hand, I cannot deny that I did enjoy Braveheart, Deer Hunter, and Apocalypse Now. They all resonated great storylines, awesome cinematography, and first-rate actors. But seeing the gore that accompanies these films doesn’t enhance the story for me…it only makes me reflect on situations that I cannot possibly comprehend.

But I’m getting off topic. My friend was, and is, a true American Sniper. This Marine, whom I consider to be my big brother, was stationed in Iraq almost thirty years ago. He experienced and

witnessed things that his friends and family will hopefully never have to endure. And he went through this for us, because in his heart he felt it was the right thing to do.

I don’t see him or talk with him very often, but whenever November 10th comes around, I do remember that it is the birthday of the Marine Corps. I reserve November 10th as a specific day of thanks to my buddy “Rock”. Like it or not, he had drilled this day into my head as a tribute to the Marines. He wouldn’t let me forget. A sincere thanks to all of our patriots. Semper Fi.

Black & White Gala Raises Funds for Broward Education Foundation

Fort Lauderdale Strikers midfielder James Marcelin has been named to the Haiti national team’s 35-man preliminary roster for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Marcelin, 28, has represented Haiti on more than 20 occasions. His last cap came against the Chile national team in an international friendly at the Strikers’ Lockhart Stadium on September 9.

Haiti will name its final 23-man roster on June 22. The team kicks off the tournament on July 7 against Panama at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, and will face the United States and Honduras in Group A action.

The 6-foot-2, 178-pound defensive midfielder was a member of Haiti’s CONCACAF Gold Cup squads in 2007 and 2009.

approaching, I always ask myself, “Am I a true patriot?” I am a New England Patriots fan (keep your comments to yourself), but what is the true meaning of being a “patriot?” According to Google, a patriot is a person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors. I can’t say that I have gone off to war and fought for our country but I can say that I admire those individuals that have protected us and continue to do so for the love of their country. This got me thinking, “What can I do to become more of a patriot in business and impact the community in a positive way?” Let’s talk about it!

Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, Jarrod Bunch attended Ashtabula High School, where he earned the distinction of “student-athlete”. In 1991, he was a first round draft choice of the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. In 1992, he was selected Giants offensive player of the year and his 4.8 yards per carry was second in the NFL. His career almost ended in 1994 due to debilitating injuries to his knee. After several surgeries, he continued his career in the NFL with the Los Angeles Raiders, but retired in 1995. In 1995, Jarrod met his wife Robin Emtage, a photographer and makeup artist, whom he married in 1998. Together they own Emtage Beauty, an all-natural beauty line company (learn more at emtagebeauty.com).

Jarrod’s television and film credits include various lead and supporting roles for CSI Miami, Rizzoli & Isles, Entourage, and many others. He played the young George Foreman in the Emmy award winning HBO film, "Only in America: The Don King Story." Jarrod also appeared in one of 2012’s most anticipated films, “Django Unchained”, for which Quentin Tarantino won the Oscar for “Best Original Screenplay”. Before we begin, congrats on your successful football and acting career. Tell us more about your transition from being an athlete turned actor and how it has changed your life...When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act?I was only 26 years old when I was injured, so I was looking for another way to be in entertainment. Playing in New York and in Los Angeles gave me to a lot of opportunities to interact with producers, directors, and actors at charity events and functions so I started to pursue acting. A lot of my time in LA was spent with another fellow NFL player Rodney Pete, who was dating Holly Robinson. She suggested that I meet with an acting coach. When I met with the coach, I knew this is what I wanted to do.What inspires you to act?It’s not that difficult if you are prepared…. just like playing football. In both you learn as much as you can in practice, and follow the reality of what takes place in the moment. I love the fact that people get to see a different side of me.When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor?When I got the part of George Foreman, in the HBO film, “Only in America: The Don King Story”… The director fought for me when the executive producer wanted someone else because he knew me as a player for the NY Giants

and thought that I was just a football player. When we wrapped shooting, the executive producer approached me and said he was wrong in his thinking and that I did a fantastic job of playing the iconic fighter.What was your favorite role to date and why?It’s funny, but I would have to say it was on a show called, “The Forgotten”. I play a retired NFL player who became a high school football coach and was murdered for putting his players’ education at a higher priority than playing on the field.What do you enjoy most about your career?I get to pretend for a living! An adventure that began with a walk

I recently traveled to Cote D’Azur, in the south of France, to visit family. As a 19 year old in such a scenic place, I decided to take an adventure. When I was younger, my mother had taken walks around the cape daily, always reporting back with tales of the incredible beauty that’s lying below, and this time I took it upon myself to do the same walk. The entire walk took me about an hour and a half to circle from our

apartment all the way to the Hotel Eden Rock, and back. However, it took that long because every ten minutes or so I was stopping for pictures! The entire stretch of the walk was right alongside the beach - and full of cars, unfortunately - but that didn’t stop me! The roads in the South wind and bend, allowing each curve to surprise you with a new fantastic view.

At the beginning of my walk I had come up to a rock beach where one tiny, old tower of what used to be a castle remained solitary in the water as a place for kids to play in. I immediately remembered days there with my uncle, mom and sister. Then as I continued my journey, I could see something through the trees up ahead that looked promising.

Once I arrived, I was speechless; there was a little homemade wooden dock with about ten boats of different colors just bobbing in the crystal water, accompanied by some children playing. Behind this dock was a modern white house right on the edge of the beach that was slightly hidden by beautiful trees that reflected on the ocean. This became my favorite view, fit for a postcard.

As I continued, I saw this rock wall up ahead with some people walking toward it that seemed to vanish behind the bushes. Being the adventurous girl I am, I wandered over to find out it was this little path to a private area where they have scuba diving! I had never knew that even existed, and I had been visiting the south of France every year since I was little! Crazy!

At the end of my walk, yes I was sweaty and had a nice tan going, but it all went unnoticed because I was focused on the hundred pictures I took trying to capture everything I just experienced! Next time I will take a different route and see what other breathtaking views are waiting to be found.

I hope that this will inspire you to go outside and explore places near your house for an hour and see what you find, and if anything it will be great quality time with the family.

Late last month, we attended the Groundbreaking event for the Pompano Beach Pier Parking Garage. The 663-space parking garage, designed by architect Bob Currie, will be adorned with three-story tall metallic sails, creating an architecturally dramatic landmark. The parking garage, Pompano's first, will also include 6,200 square feet of retail space and a new Tourism & Welcome Center.
