KILUSANG MAYO UNO

✤ Kilusang Mayo Uno, or May First Labour Movement (KMU) is an independent labor center in the Philippines promoting genuine, militant and anti-imperialist trade unionism. It follows in the fighting tradition of the country's first trade union, the Union Impresores y Litografos de Filipinas in 1892 and the Congress of Labor Organizations (CLO) of the 1950's.

✤ It was created on May 1, 1980 during the Marcos dictatorship to represent the progressive worker's organizations in the Philippines advocating for the National Democratic struggle - in particular the removal of what was seen as "US Imperialism". The organization also advances the need for National Industrialization where the economy develops agricultural production to serve as the base for light and heavy industries.

✤ KMU also advocates for an across the board wage increase of 125 pesos. This campaign has been launched in 1999 and in December 2006, the House of Representatives approved House Bill 435 seeking a P125 legislated wage hike.

✤ KMU is also leading a campaign against extrajudicial killings. Since 2001, more than 70 unionist and labor activists have been killed by death squads. The union president of Nestle Philippines, Diosdado Fortuna was among the union leaders killed. They have also launched an international campaign against political killings and have filed a complaint to the International Labour Organization versus the government ofGloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

✤ KMU have also an ongoing campaign to boycott Nestle whom they accuse of labor rights violations in Laguna province on Luzon island in the Philippines.

✤ Previous campaigns include a Transportation strike in a protest against rising oil prices in 2004, and a campaign to free the late congressman Crispin Beltran from Philippine police authorities.

✤ Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) condemned the newly implemented water rate hike, describing it as glaring anti-people consequence of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) which the Aquino regime is now eagerly pushing in various economic sectors to allow big corporations rake in higher profits.

✤ With the death toll in the aftermath of typhoon “Sendong” reaching a thousand, labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno called on the Supreme Court to junk the country’s laws on mining and logging, saying these are responsible for the flashfloods that caused the deaths and destruction in the Visayas and Mindanao. In particular, KMU called for a halt in the implementation of Republic Act 7942 (Philippine Mining Act of 1995) and Presidential Decree 705 (Forestry Reform Code), as well as the immediate junking of these laws.

✤ Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno called for justice for the five workers who were injured today in SM Davao, saying workplace accidents this year highlight the need to junk contractualization.

✤ Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno called on the public today to give support to the Mendiola Campout protest against hunger and poverty, saying the protest is fighting for the country’s 99%.

✤ Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno condemned today the filing of trumped-up charges against five leaders and five participants of the Mendiola Campout protests, saying the Aquino government is harassing activists holding peaceful protests against intensifying hunger and poverty in the country.

✤ “Hasty generalizations from another planet.”

This was how labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno labelled today the praises made by the International Labor Organization’s country director for the Philippines for the Aquino government’s so-called focus on “inclusive growth,” saying no genuine labor body would commend the country’s government on the labor and poverty front.

✤ Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno slammed the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for imposing taxes on contributions to pension, housing and health funds that are more than required by law, saying this is an extortion by the government and an attack on social security.

✤ “This is harassment and repression.”

This was the statement of labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno as it condemned the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LFTRB) and the Aquino government for cancelling and suspending the franchises of several Metro Manila bus firms for alleged participation in a transport strike last Nov. 15, 2010.
