Pollution is most concentrated during the rainy months of May through mid-December, which also roughly coincides with the Panamanian school year, and that children are one of the population sectors that is most sensitive to such pollutants.

Soil pollution, for years farmers in Panama from Los Santos to Chiriqui used large amount of commercial fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in producing the majority of Panama’s crops. The pollution for these farming practices contaminated ground water and the soil.

Soil erosion and deforestation are among Panama's most significant environmental concerns. Soil erosion is occurring at a rate of 2,000 tons per year. During 1990-1995, the annual average rate of deforestation was 2.15%.
