Welcome to Politicos on Parade!
Welcome to the League of Women Voters of Volusia County’s biennial Politicos on Parade fundraiser. The League is a non-partisan organization and membership is open to any citizen 16 years of age and older. From its inception, the League of Women Voters has provided balanced education, well-sourced references, and fact-based information on important issues affecting our community, while working diligently to register and encourage citizens to vote. Before adopting any position, issues are carefully researched and debated by members who undertake a rigorous consensus process at the grassroots level.
Your support for today’s event will help us continue efforts to promote good government and an informed citizenry in Volusia County. To that end, the League’s Observer Corps continues to observe a number of governmental meetings and keeps our members informed about issues and decisions that impact our daily lives. Our action teams are hard at work educating the public and promoting sound public policy in several areas including education, election law, gun safety, juvenile justice, and
natural resources. We are currently expanding our Speaker’s Bureau offerings to include informative presentations on timely action team issues as well as amendment presentations.
We anticipate a busy 2018 election season when we will be called upon to moderate candidates’ forums and explain ballot issues. Time is of the essence. The primary is fast approaching with early voting in Volusia County starting on August 18. Primary elections for candidates are critical and may be the only time citizens get to vote for important positions. Any person or group wishing to request the services of the League to moderate forums or provide amendment presentations should contact us at [email protected] .
Today, we honor our elected officials who have graciously given of their time to serve as models for Politicos on Parade. Their presence is a highlight for the League and offers our guests the opportunity to connect with their local officials in a light-hearted, social, non-political setting.
Again, welcome to Politicos on Parade and thank you for supporting the League of Women Voters of Volusia County.

ADOPT A CAT (OR TWO) TODAY AND FIND LOVE (IF NOT OBEDIENCE)
Yes, it is us again. We pop up during even-year elections. Like this year’s primaries, we cats are full of surprises – including occasional fur-balls. We give a lot of love though. We first ran this ad four years ago, and we appreciate all of you who believed in us and adopted your own cat – or even a dog – from a shelter. We are running it again, to support the League and to promote cat adoption and neutering. We were adopted in October 2008 as kittens from the Edgewater Animal Shelter which was showing several of us at a pet store in Daytona. Our adopter had
been without a cat for several months and only wanted one cat. When she saw us though, two beautiful sisters, she couldn’t resist. As you can see in our shelter mug shot on the left, we really wanted out of there. She renamed us Hillary and Ms. Obama (2008, right?) but that doesn’t mean we are Democrats – cats are truly non-partisan and strictly independent. You too can adopt a fun-loving and independent cat – just think of all the names available this past election year!
Visit one of our local animal shelters. There are a lot of us out there looking for a home and love. And, we know you need someone like us in your life. During these strange cold spells, we know where to find comfort, as you can see. We are house and screened-patio cats, and for us all politics is local! Don’t just vote in presidential elections, but carefully examine those who are running for congressional and local offices. Don’t forget to vote for the judges too. And in November, remember to study those proposed constitutional amendments and vote on them as well. Watch for LWVVC presentations on amendments. As Independents, we fully support the efforts of the non-partisan League of Women Voters of Volusia County to encourage civic involvement and voting.
Hillary and Ms. Obama Johnson, Two Happy Cats (for now)

Democracy Depends on Informed VotersContact the League for Amendment Presentations
We are already in the 2018 election season. Due to voter initiative amendments, legislative amendments, and the Constitution Revision Commission amendments, we anticipate an unusually large number of amendments on the ballot this year. Voters will be looking for reliable, nonpartisan information to help discern the intent and anticipated outcome of these issues.
The League of Women Voter of Volusia County has well trained speakers who can provide education and clarification on the complicated issues that voters find most challenging on our ballots this year.
We welcome your suggestions of groups that would welcome our speakers at their meetings. If you are a member or friend of an organization hosting regular meetings with speakers, please consider inviting the League to address your group.
To arrange an amendment presentation, please contact:Carla Christianson. Voter Service Chair, LWVVCEmail: [email protected] or cell 386-299-2878
