 Egypt - Short history

While best known for its pyramids and ancient civilizations, Egypt has played a central role in Middle East politics in modern times.

Its wars with Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973, then its eventual peace with its adversary in 1979, have seen Egypt move from being a warring nation to become a key representative in the peace process.

Politics: President Hosni Mubarak has been in power since 1981; his strongest challenger has been the Muslim Brotherhood which is tolerated but officially bannedEconomy: The Egyptian economy is the second largest in the Arab world after Saudi ArabiaInternational: Egypt has been a key ally of the West; it has played a key role in efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Hosni Mubarak-policiesHosni Mubarak was a dictator he ruled a state for 30 years

and didn't allow others to take power. Elections meant nothing in his time, and since no one had any power to talk against him or challenge him, he became corrupt. Finally the public realized its power inspired by other revolutions they started their revolt against the leader, though earlier small conflicts occurred but Mubarak peacefully stepped down unlike Gaddafi.

His internal policies might have been bad, but he wasn't that bad for the world. He was strictly against Islamic militants, and had a good supporting relations with Israel which any Islamic country hardly had. His one of the reason to refuse to come to receive the award in India was that he would be later expected by the Pakistanis to come to Islamabad, being an Islamic nation.

Hosni Mubarak has been the target of many attacks by Islamic militants.

Protest in Egypt

• Demonstrators clash with Egyptian police in central Cairo during a protest over the economy and corruption.

• People across Egypt took to the streets on Tuesday in demonstrations against corruption and failing economic policies, rallies partly inspired by similar protests that rocked Tunisia this month.

• Thousands were protesting in the capital of Cairo, according to the "Front to Defend Egypt Protesters," an alliance of lawyers who helped organize the events.

• At first, witnesses said, the police were restrained in Cairo. But later, they said, police fired around a dozen rounds of tear gas on the protesters, and people in the crowd threw the canisters back at the officers.

PROTEST IN EGYPT

The group said about 200 demonstrators were in the southern city of Aswan, 2,000 in the eastern city of Ismailiya, and about 3,000 in the northern city of Mahallah.

Protest organizers said they hope to capture the regional momentum for political change set by Tunisians, who 10 days ago forced the collapse of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's 23-year rule.

The Egyptian government did not issue permits for Tuesday's planned protests.

In an interview released Tuesday with state-run al-Ahram newspaper, Interior Minister Habib Adly warned that "the security agencies are able to stop any attempt to attend" the demonstrations and called the efforts of the "youth staging street protests ineffective."
